GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!-

The Pandemic has thrust most of us into the “Zoom.” I was skeptical at first but found the more I participate in Zoom meetings and events, the better I have gotten at positioning myself and the more comfortable I am feeling about this whole “virtual” reality becoming the new norm. It actually saves a lot of time to prepare for a meeting or event that you do not have to travel for. You just need to be concerned about how you look from the waist up. You can wear your slippers and you don’t need to put on cologne - however, out of habit I found myself doing it anyway. I use to have an office on 125th Street when I started out 25 years ago. It was after a couple of years that I realized – none of my customers ever visited my office. I had to visit them or we secured our deal over the phone and internet. Also once we were able to transmit publications over the internet and no longer had to print pages and take to the printer – It was clear there was no need for an office.

All the writers and photographers, email their work to me. I learned this more than 20 years ago and now I believe many businesses have now learned that many of their employees/contractors/workers – simply do not need to be in an office space. I believe “Zoom” is here to stay.

We had our Women Business Owners “Virtual” networking event on October 15th. I want to thank Emblem for being our sponsor and handling the technical part of the event. I also want to say thank you to the 70 women who participated. It was good to see all of you and according to your messages during the event, good to see so many of you continue to thrive during this Pandemic. Our October 29th issue will feature these women and their businesses and we hope you will support them by shopping with them now and during this upcoming holiday season.

I know that we all are aware how important it is for us to vote in November. Plan to do what you have to do to get your vote in. Plan to vote early. Mail in your ballot if you must, however, you ought not to be able to sleep at night if you fail to vote.

O

n August 11, 2020, America was finally notified that former Vice President Joe Biden had chosen California State Senator Kamala Harris to be his nominee for Vice President on the ballot for the upcoming 2020 Presidential election November 3rd.

Harris was not new to the nation, having just come off a short-lived campaign as a presidential candidate. She had already been vetted and scrutinized for supposedly insulting Biden in a debate.

Yet, Biden reconsidered Harris’s obvious creditability and more than enough experience and success to carry her own weight in the process to victory. He did the right thing!

There is sufficient bi-

ographical information available about Harris’s biracial African-American and Indian-American identity inherited from her parents, Shyamala Gopalan and Donald Harris, who both immigrated to the United States from India and Jamaica, respectively, to pursue doctorate degrees at the University of California, Berkeley.

Harris is a graduate of Howard University, a prominent HBCU, served

as an elected San Francisco District Attorney as well as a remarkable record as California Attorney General prior to becoming the second Black woman elected to the U.S. Senate.

From the pantsuits, the choice of foot comfort from her favorite Converse sneakers to the various strands of pearls worn nearly 35 years to pay homage to the founding members of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, AKA, the first Black Greek-letter sorority she was part of at Howard University; all eyes far and near are on Kamala.

Kamala means “lotus” in Sanskrit, the primary liturgical language of Hinduism and philosophy and some of the principal texts of Buddhism with a 3500-year

history. It has been quoted that her mother chose the name for a specific reason.

“A culture that worships goddesses produces strong women,” she told the Los Angeles Times.

Call it prophesy or destiny, the letters of the word lotus can certainly serve as an acronym for what Kamala has already attained in her career and profession.

KAMALA is a LOTUS. L.O.T.U.S. – Leader of the United States.

Hieroglyphics from Ancient Egypt clearly show the lotus flower alongside priests and pharaohs.

When the lotus first begins to sprout, it is under water, making its home in lakes and ponds where the water remains still on the surface.

But underneath the surface, the lotus is surrounded by mud and muck and rough conditions.

Despite these conditions, the lotus flower maintains strength, and pushes aside each of these obstacles as it makes its way to clearer surfaces, finally freeing itself from the harsh life con-

ditions below. The lotus is ready to take on the world, it is flexible and strong, securely anchored.

Like the lotus, this is our time to push aside any obstacles that are blocking our way to justice. All Americans must stand as strong, confident proud men and women steady in line, knowing we vote with hope to BUILD BACK BETTER. Take your determination to the poll to do the right thing; place the pencil on the right boxes to get it done. Remember Si se puede – YES, YOU CAN! OP-ED: My Plan to Lift Every Voice in Black America

here is injustice in America. There is discrimination.

There is a legacy of racism and inequality that lives still in our institutions, our laws, and in too many people’s hearts that makes it harder for Black people to succeed. These are facts in the United States of America in 2020, and we must all do more to move our nation closer to the ideals inlaid at our founding—that all women and men are created equal.

This year has also brought us too many examples of the dangers Black people can face in the course of going about their lives. With grieving hearts, we learned to say the names of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Rayshard Brooks, and many more. I’ve spent time with the families of George Floyd and Jacob Blake, sharing their grief and anger and seeing the incredible resilience of communities that for too long have had a knee on their neck. And I was inspired by their commitment to turn their pain into purpose.

Today, there are Americans all across this country, especially Black Americans, who are exhausted and hurting. Who are disappointed by a system that never seems to deliver for your communities. Who are sick and tired of a cycle where, in good times, Black communities lag behind, in bad times they get hit first and hardest, and in recovery, they take the longest to bounce back.

We’re in the midst of four simultaneous crises—a pandemic that has claimed more than 200,000 lives, a disproportionate number of whom were Black; an economic crash that has hit Black workers and Black business owners especially hard; a long overdue reckoning on racial justice; and a

climate crisis that is already hurting Black and Brown communities the most.

It is our job to do everything in our power to rip out systemic racism across our society, root and branch. It will be hard work in any case. But we will not succeed without a leader who understands our history and is ready to grapple with our challenges.

President Trump wants to paper over the living wound of racism. He’s issued Executive Orders and established a new national commission designed to whitewash our history—and deny the daily reality of being Black in America. He actively appeals to white supremacists and fans the flames of hatred and division in our country, because he thinks it benefits him politically. He ignores the most basic job of every president: the duty to care for all of us, not just those who voted for him.

It’s the polar opposite of what I will do as president. I was proud to serve for eight years alongside President Obama. I watched up close how he filled the Oval Office with dignity and compassion for others. And, together with Senator Kamala Harris as my vice president, we will restore honor, integrity, and competence to the White House.

We will build an administration that looks like America, including nominating the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

We will work to unite the country around solutions that will push

our country forward, and most importantly, I will listen to those impacted by the long-standing inequities in our system—especially Black Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and Native Americans.

That’s how we will work together to deliver real, lasting change. Criminal justice and policing reforms, but also economic opportunity and financial stability.

Building wealth for families of color and passing it down. Closing the racial wealth gap is one of the most powerful ways we can build real equity in our society, and it’s going to require a full-court press.

That’s what my Lift Every Voice plan is—a comprehensive agenda to take on the range of issues that drive inequality in Black America.

We’ll tackle student debt and invest more in our HBCUs, so higher education is a pathway to wealth and opportunity instead of to debt that prevents you from owning a home or starting a small business.

My plan will empower Blackowned small businesses, with short-term relief to get you through this tough time and long-term investments to help you build back better — with access to new capital and financing and government contracts.

Critically, we’re going to tackle the racial homeownership gap head on. There is no greater vehicle for wealth creation than homeownership. That’s why my plan will restore the steps President Obama and I took toward eradicating housing discrimination, including redlining; end racial bias in how we judge which families are credit-worthy; and provide a $15,000 down payment tax credit to help millions of young Black families buy their first home.

We’ll fix our upside-down tax system to finally reward work, not

wealth. Trump thinks billionaires deserve more tax cuts. But under my plan, I’ll make sure the super wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share, while ensuring that no one making less than $400,000 a year sees their taxes go up.

And I’m going to fight like hell to defend your family’s health care, just like I would my own.

Right now, in the midst of a pandemic, Donald Trump is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Obamacare—all of it. He wants to overturn the very law that expanded coverage to an additional 3 million Black Americans. If he succeeds, more than 20 million Americans will lose their coverage, and more than 100 million people with preexisting conditions will no longer be protected against their insurance companies charging them more, or denying them coverage all together.

I’ll defend Obamacare and build on it—adding a public option that will automatically enroll 4 million more people that Republicans shut out by refusing to expand Medicaid in their states. We’re going to get to universal coverage and lower health care costs. We’re going to give working families a bigger subsidy to lower their premiums. And we’re going to take on pharmaceutical companies, bringing down the cost of your prescription drugs by 60 percent.

As my friend John Lewis used his final words to remind us: “Ordinary people with extraordinary vision can redeem the soul of America.” We cannot be tired. We cannot be hopeless. The choice in this election couldn’t be more stark, and we must vote for the future we want for every single one of our children. I’m ready to fight for you and your families, and I hope to earn your vote.

We’re standing at the steps of the United States Capitol. I’m looking at the Washington Monument and beyond it to the Lincoln Memorial and beyond that to the Jefferson Memorial. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of these United States and he was the man who allegedly freed us.

Abraham Lincoln saw

in his day, what President Clinton sees in this day.

He saw the great divide between Black and White.

Abraham Lincoln and Bill Clinton see what the Kerner Commission saw 30 years ago when they said that this nation was moving toward two Americas–one Black, one White, separate and unequal. And the Kerner Commission revisited their findings 25 years later and saw that America was worse today than it was in the time of Martin Luther King, Jr. There are still two Americas, one Black, one White, separate and unequal.

Abraham Lincoln, when he saw this great divide, he pondered a solution of separation. Abraham Lincoln said he never was in favor of our being jurors or hav-

ing equal status with the Whites of this nation. Abraham Lincoln said that if there were to be a superior or inferior, he would rather the superior position be assigned to the White race.

In the middle of this Mall is the Washington Monument, 555 feet high.

But if we put a 1 in front of

that 555 feet, we get 1555, the year that our first fathers landed on the shores of Jamestown, Virginia as slaves. In the background is the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorial, each one of these monuments is 19 feet high.

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president. Thomas Jefferson, the third pres-

ident, and 16 and 3 make 19 again. What is so significant about this number 19? Why are we standing on the Capitol steps today?

That number—when you have a nine, you have a womb that is pregnant, and when you have a one standing by the nine, it means that there’s something se-

cret that has to be unfolded. Right here on this Mall where we are standing, according to books written on Washington, D.C., slaves used to be brought right here on this Mall in chains to be sold up and down the eastern seaboard.

Right along this Mall, going over to the White House, our fathers were sold into slavery. But, George Washington, the first president of the United States, said he feared that before too many years passed over his head, this slave would prove to become a most troublesome species of property. Thomas Jefferson said he trembled for this country when he reflected that God was just and that His justice could not sleep forever.

As Clinical Trials Halt, U.S. Covid Cases Surge Harlem Community Newspapers | October 22. 2020

li Lilly announced this week that it would pause a government-sponsored COVID-19 clinical trial because of a potential safety concern.

The drug manufacturer did not specify the concern, but the experimental vaccine is reportedly similar to the one President Donald Trump has claimed cured him of

the coronavirus.

Earlier, Johnson & Johnson put the brakes on a COVID-19 vaccine trial after the company noted an “unexplained illness” reported by a participant.

In September, Great Britain officials held off on a potential vaccine when a participant reported a concerning reaction.

The difficulty in producing a vaccine for the deadly virus comes as a new wave of COVID-19 infection has begun.

Data provided by Johns Hopkins University in Maryland revealed that the U.S. surpassed 51,000 new daily cases on Oct. 13, marking the first time in over two months that the number exceeded 50,000.

The average daily number of new cases stands at 48 percent higher than two months ago when 34,354 were reported.

More than 36,000 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized on Oct. 13, the highest number recorded since August.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that African Americans remain three times as likely as whites to contract the coronavirus, five times as likely to end up in the hospital, and twice as likely to die from COVID-19.

While the race and ethnicity of those who contract the virus are known in just 52 percent of cases, 7 of the 10 U.S. counties with the highest death rates from COVID-19 have populations where people of color make up the majority, according to data com-

piled by USA Today.

Of the top 50 counties with the highest death rates, 31 are populated mostly by people of color.

“Put simply, America’s history of racism was itself a preexisting condition,” study authors wrote for USA Today.

Additionally, one report noted that had African Americans died at the same rate as whites; approximately 20,800 Black people would still be alive.

Dr. James Hildreth, the president of the historically Black Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, told the Black Press that his school is among four HBCUs preparing to host on campus COVID-19 clinical trials.

Dr. Hildreth previously advised against any vaccine touted

by Trump, where the president exclaimed would be ready before

Election Day. “It’s true that Black people have little trust in clinical trials, and that’s understandable,” Dr. Hildreth stressed. “We’ve engendered a level of trust with communities of color that other organizations just don’t have, and it’s imperative for us as HBCUs to rise to this occasion.”

Dr. Hildreth noted that Meharry’s trial would feature a vaccine made by Novavax.

“I’ll be the first patient,” Dr. Hildreth said, again punctuating the trust that’s needed to secure African American participants.

“By engaging with the four Black medical schools, [participants] will have individuals who look like them, sitting across the table, having these conversations, and we think that’s going to make a huge difference.”

Black SuperPac Urges Candidates, Parties to Spend Millions with Black Businesses

The pledge is named after Arthur Fletcher, a former assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor in the Nixon administration. Fletcher, a Black Republican and lifelong civil rights activist referred to himself as “the father of affirmative action enforcement” for his work with the 1969 “Philadelphia Plan.”

The plan required federal government contractors in Philadelphia’s construction trades to set goals and timetables for hiring minority workers.

It gave the businesses autonomy on how to increase minority employment.

However, if the goals were not reached, the contracts could be terminated by the federal government.

“The name of the game is to put some economic flesh and bones on Dr. (Martin Luther) King’s dream,” Fletcher is quoted as saying.

Fletcher went on to work with successive Republican presidents, including Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush. Later in his career, he also served as chairman of the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights, and as the head of the United Negro College fund.

He died in 2005.

Growing support “The Art Fletcher Pledge should be a demand!” exclaimed Carl Marbury, a Pittsburgh, Penn.-based entrepreneur.

“Extending the ideas of Art Fletcher to campaign spending should be a demand that every organization that supports the economic empowerment of minority-owned businesses should be making of candidates looking for the votes of their members.”

“In response to rioting, burning and looting, many American businesses and organizations are investing in voices that are loud and often irresponsible. BlakPAC is opening the way for investment in softer but experienced and responsible voices which present plans and projects which actually solve problems and benefit Americans,” said former Louisiana State Senator Elbert Guillory, a Black Republican. He has signed on as a pledge supporter.

“People often forget those who commit to a cause and act as a catalyst for historic change,” said Robert Whittemore, another pledge supporter.

“Art Fletcher, a Republican civil rights leader, championed affirmative action to assure minority workers’ civil rights were protected and represented to assure access to oppor-

tunity and economic equality through employment.

“Today, BlakPAC calls upon candidates and campaigns to make a pledge for affirmative political action, assuring minority activists and minority-owned businesses receive the funding needed to get the right candidates elected.”

Electing conservatives According to its website, www.blakpac.gop, “BlakPAC contributes to conservative candidates who share our values and serve as positive role models. They are our best advocates for conservative ideas to be showcased in the community.” The organization has been in operation since January 2015.

BlakPAC also provides candidate training, exit polling, voter research, and

social media campaign services, and has set up paid internships for Black youth who are interested in working on political campaigns.

Easy to do “Meeting the Art Fletcher Pledge is easy if the commitment is there for affirmative political action,” Farrell said. “There are some 200 Black-owned newspapers in the United States covering every possible market with a very loyal readership. Many of these papers are weeklies and therefore have a long shelf life compared to daily newspapers.

“There are more than 100 Black-owned radio stations. There are even Black-owned television stations and Byron Allen’s Weather Channel,” he said.

“National and state-

wide candidates should be serious about reaching swing voters – otherwise known as Black voters – who provide the margin of victory in Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Texas.”

The 2018 Florida governor’s race was decided by 44,000 votes. According to Farrell, Republican Ron DeSantis owes his victory in the Florida gubernatorial election to about 100,000 African American women who unexpectedly chose him over Democrat candidate Andrew Gillum because of a school choice-oriented get out the vote effort by BlakPac. ne of America’s leading Black conservative political action committee has instituted a national effort to help Black-owned businesses earn some of the billions of dollars spent during America’s political campaigns as the 2020 election year hits the home stretch.

BlakPAC, a federally-registered “Super PAC” (political action committee), is spearheading an initiative urging all candidates, political parties, political action committees, and donors to take “The Art Fletcher Pledge” to commit to spending ten percent of their funding, revenues, or both with Black-owned and businesses and financial institutions.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics website at opensecrets. com, which tracks campaign funding and expenditures, the 2020 presidential candidates have raised more than $2.8 billion thus far – all to be spent prior to Election Day, November 3, 2020.

That amount does not include campaign fundraising or expenditures for congressional, state, or local elections, or campaign dollars raised by fundraising committees or political parties.

“The purpose of the pledge is simple,” explained BlakPAC Chairman George Farrell.

“Any candidate, Democrat, Republican or independent, that cannot execute the ability to spend 10 percent of campaign funds with Black businesses cannot be trusted to operate

Burdens of COVID Hit Hardest Among Marginalized Students (Statepoint)

tudents are the greatest hope for the future, but for many, their plans are threatened due to burdens posed by COVID-19. Here are just a few of the issues students and families face today, and steps being taken to address these concerns: • The digital divide: Recent images of two Latino children doing their online schoolwork in a Silicon Valley restaurant parking lot calls attention to the deepening digital divide in the COVID-19 era. Nationwide, 16.9 million lack the home internet access necessary to support online learning. A phenomenon known as the “homework gap,” this issue disproportionately impacts students of color. According to the Alliance for Excellent Education, one out of three

Black, Latino, and Native American/Alaska Native households doesn’t have access to a home internet connection and one in six doesn’t have access to a computer or device.

• Housing insecurity: For students in the LGBTQ community, campus closures have sometimes meant the loss of in-school counseling and the support of like-minded, accepting peers. When “home” is an unwelcoming or even unsafe environment, students can be at a greater risk for depression, anxiety, abuse and homelessness.

• Educational barriers: Distance learning creates new educational hurdles.

With parents taking on an unprecedented instructional role, language barriers for non-English speaking parents can prove significant, like for Asian and Latino immigrants. What’s

more, certain programming for students with disabilities, including speech and physical therapy, can be tough, if not impossible, to provide virtually. Lastly, certain learning disabilities can make virtual lessons especially difficult to follow.

• Military family and school options: Continued access to quality education has always been a concern for military families, who often have no choice but to send their children to the nearest public school, whether it’s the right fit or not. Today, this problem has grown in severity, as the level and quality of remote instruction can vary wildly among school districts.

• Lack of financial resources: Despite the economic disruption caused by the pandemic, colleges and universities are largely

maintaining or increasing their tuition costs, leaving financially struggling students and families in a lurch.

Efforts to Help In the face of today’s many unprecedented challenges, help is on the way.

New emergency grants are being provided by organizations like UNCF, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, APIA Scholars, Point Foundation for

LBGTQ youth, American Indian Graduate Center, Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Scholarship America for military veterans and people with disabilities.

Additionally, organizations like Wells Fargo recently completed their new Wells Fargo Student Impact

Scholarship in September 2020 to help students impacted by COVID-19. ASK DR. KEVIN: Heart Failure and ATTR-CM Among African Americans: A Community Disproportionately Impacted By This Rare Disease

The “Ask Dr. Kevin” series is brought to you

by Pfizer Rare Disease in collaboration with the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) to increase understanding of transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) and the risk it poses to African Americans.

TTR-CM is a rare and life-threatening condition that is associated with heart failure. Awareness of this rare disease is low, even among healthcare providers, and symptoms of ATTR-CM often mimic other types of heart failure. As a result, ATTR-CM is significantly underdiagnosed.

It’s important to understand the two sub-types of ATTR-CM, wild-type and hereditary. Wild-type ATTR-CM, the most common form, is usually associated with men over the age of 60 and is not caused by a genetic mutation. Most wild-type patients are White. The second type, hereditary ATTR-CM, is inherited from a relative and is due to genetics.[vi],[vii],[viii], Hereditary ATTR-CM 16

disproportionately affects the African American community because the most common mutation associated with hereditary ATTR-CM in the U.S. is V122I and is found almost exclusively in African Americans.

This series will take a closer look at the signs and symptoms of hereditary ATTR-CM, while exploring the often-complicated journey to diagnosis for patients living with this condition.

In the U.S., African Americans experience disproportionate rates of cardiovascular disease, including heart failure and stroke and according to one study, were 45 percent more likely to die as a result of heart failure-related hospitalization than Caucasian populations in the United States. Poor cardiovascular outcomes in the African American community have been linked to a variety of factors, such as lower levels of health literacy and education, an overall lack of insurance coverage and access to quality healthcare.

While ATTR-CM is generally underdiagnosed in all patients, this is especially the case among African Americans with the hereditary subtype. With the disproportionate rates of heart failure, heart attacks, and other serious heart conditions in the African American community, it’s important to fully explore the underlying

cause of these conditions with the help of a cardiologist.

As someone who has dedicated herself to addressing patient health disparities and access to care, including those that affect African Americans, I asked Dr. Dara Richardson-Heron, Pfizer’s Chief Patient Officer, for her perspective on the ATTR-CM patient burden in the Black community. “While African Americans are more likely to experience heart failure relative to other ethnic and racial groups, there is still a gap in understanding the underlying cause,” said Dr. Richardson-Heron. “Because awareness of hereditary ATTR-CM as a cause of heart failure is so low, many patients may never have their condition accurately diagnosed and treated, and cases continue to go undetected in the

community.”

Hereditary ATTR-CM is caused by a mutation in the gene that produces the transthyretin protein.

As noted above, the most common mutation associated with hereditary ATTR-CM in the U.S. is V122I and is found almost exclusively in African Americans with a prevalence of roughly 3 percent.

Symptom onset can occur in men and women as early as their 50s or 60s although people who have the mutation may never develop symptoms of the disease.

Hereditary ATTR-CM is a serious disease that can affect many parts of the body, including the nerves, heart, GI tract, liver, and kidneys. As a result, symptoms can manifest in a wide array of clinical presentations, often leading to misdiagnosis and delays in

diagnosis.

Since ATTR-CM often presents with symptoms that are similar to other more common heart conditions, the possibility of ATTR-CM may not be considered initially or there may be a lack of understanding of how the disease affects African Americans. Symptoms of ATTR-CM may also include non-cardiac related symptoms such as carpal tunnel syndrome (numbness, tingling and pain in the fingers), biceps tendon rupture, and pain or numbness in the lower back and legs due to narrowing of the lower spine (known as lumbar spinal stenosis). Referral to a cardiologist can help patients receive an appropriate diagnosis earlier for their condition. Understanding symptoms and having knowledge of their family’s health history can help empow-

er patients to have more proactive conversations with their primary care physician or cardiologist about ATTR-CM. Healing Energy - Past, Present and Future

aturday, April 24th to Saturday, May 1, 2021 are the dates for the 8th Annual Harlem Holistic Wellness Week (H2W). The theme for H2W2021 holistic wellness festival this year is “Energy Healing Past, Present, and Future. Energy healing has been used as a wellness strategy for thousands of years. Early wellness practitioners throughout the world understood

that the first step to wellness was to balance the human energy field.

The foundation of the human energy field was called by many names; Qi or Chi in China, Ki in Korea and Japan, Prana in the Yoga tradition of India and Tibet, Baraka by Islamic Sufis, Yesod by the Jewish Cabalistic Tradition, and Wakan By Native Americans.

One of the oldest recordings of energy healing is an illustration taken from the Physician’s Tomb in Saqqara Egypt (known then as Kemet) the 4,000 year old illustration is of a practitioner with dark skin and short, wooly textured hair using a form of reflexology. Ann Gillanders has a picture of this illustration in her book “The Joy of Reflexology.”

Not only is an energy balancing the common thread in ancient cultures of healing practitioners but each of the ancient energy healing cultures also had an internal energy movement exercise that focused on heaven and Earth energy. In 1951, Dr. Winifred Otto Schumann discovered that the Earth had a pulse at a frequency of 10Hz. His discovery was named the “Schumann Resonance.”

In 1924 Hans Berger was able to prove that the frequency transmitted by the human brain was an alpha wave rhythm of ( 7.8 Hz to 13 Hz), also known as “Berger’s Wave.” It was later discovered that the alpha waves recorded by Hans Berger were almost identical to the Schumann

Resonance: the frequency of the Earth. Later research provided that the Schumann Resonance was the same as the Berger brain wave.

The brain’s frequency, which controls our creativity, stress, anxiety, and immune system, is tuned into the frequency of the Earth.

Inspired by the research of Dr. Schumann, Dr. Wolfgang Ludwig discovered that the Earth’s magnetic field has a measurable frequency like the Schumann resonance. Dr. Ludwig described the two connected frequencies as Pulsed electro-magnetic frequencies or PEMF’s.

The Schumann waves (Heaven) and Ludwig’s geomagnetic field waves (Earth) provided an understanding of the Heaven and

Earth energy exercises that have been used for centuries to balance human internal energy. Research in Quantum Physics has provided a foundation for energy frequency devices (like PEMF mats) that focus on balancing internal energy.

In the future, energy medicine will replace the use of most surgeries and medications currently used to treat or suppress symptoms of the ill effects of diseases. Because of its unique location, easy to reach, just north of the South, the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond enjoyed a stellar surgical

reputation in the 1960s.

The “MCV” had overcome so much: almost literally, its closets were full of skeletons from Civil-War-era resurrectionists and early-20th-century human experiments.

Racism was an ongoing issue, too. But in 1966, the optimism within MCV’s walls came from two

surgeons, both hoping to become pioneers in heart transplantation.

Doctors David Hume and Richard Lower were both experienced in transplanting organs in animals and in humans, and both were well-regarded enough for South African surgeon Dr. Christiaan Barnard to request time to work with

and learn from them. But transplanting a heart, human-to-human, would be different than anything they’d done before.

There was no chance to rush; they had to get it right, while being mindful of ethical matters.

Where is the line between life and death?

1967 couldn’t answer that question enough, and therein lay the dilemma. The obvious best donor then was still alive but not really; the obvious best recipient of a transplant was otherwise in great health. These were not the only considerations, but they were the biggest.

There were laws to follow, and rules to heed, but shortly after Barnard beat Hume and Lower in the race to be first with a human heart transplant, the pressure was on. Waiting in the wings was an ailing white businessman with a bad heart. So when a fiftyfour-year-old Black man was brought to the hos-

pital with head injuries, the surgeons made their moves...

Murder, or medical marvel? When it comes to health-related breakthroughs like that in “The Organ Thieves,” we often read of “firsts” but not-so-often about subsequent, likewise notable, milestones achieved, and even more rarely of controversy tied to the event. But here, author Chip Jones tells all of the above, anchored by accusations of crime with racism at their core, a tale that still lingers for many concerned.

That’s heartbreaking and painful to read about, although some may argue that there was a modicum of gain here, in medical knowledge and in eventual legislation. Also up for debate: did a later-famous surgeon have a role in the push to break the rules?

Were those rules even broken? Jones leaves courtroom records – and readers to self-argue these details of that day in 1968.

Though this is a nonfiction book, fans of medical thrillers will devour it. Readers who love true medicine stories, history, and courtroom drama will love it, too, so find “The Organ Thieves” because you can’t beat it.
