Macy’s Herald Square Unveiled “Believe In The Wonder” Holiday Windows

n Thursday, November 21st, Macy’s Herald Square unveiled its legendary holiday windows signaling the start of the holiday season.

The magic began with colorful fireworks, cheerful holiday music, and a special visit from Macy’s Santaland elves. Award-winning designer and Macy’s National Director of Window

Presentation,Roya Sullivan, created the 2019 Believe in the Wonder themed holiday displays. Materials such as lacquer, chromed parts, LED lights, and 3D objects fill the iconic win-

dows, creating spectacular visuals for eyes to wander throughout the exhibition.

This year’s windows are brought to life by combining modern technological and interactive elements

with Santa Girl as she embraces the spirit of the holidays. The Macy’s Herald Square holiday windows will run through January 1st, 2020.

Racially Discriminatory Legislation and Policies Must Be Stopped The Unintended Consequences of a Menthol Cigarette Ban to Black America From pro-slavery laws to Jim Crow, to Prohibition, to racial profiling, to Stop-and-Frisk, history is clear: racist laws and discriminatory bans have been devastating for Black America.

Today, Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) and National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) have joined together with other African-American law enforcement executives to call on you - our readers in Black communities across the nation - to see the warning signs of yet another proposed racially discriminatory law: the menthol cigarette ban.

It is a well-known fact that over 85 percent of African Americans who smoke prefer menthol cigarettes. There is no factual basis to assert that a menthol cigarette ban will stop African Americans from smoking. In fact, the unintended consequences of such a raciallydiscriminatory ban will set the stage for more negative and more likely counterproductive interactions between law enforcement and African Americans.

While proponents argue that a menthol cigarette ban could encourage menthol cigarette smokers to quit smoking cold-turkey, another possible outcome could be extremely dangerous—the creation of an illicit market. If this happens, illegal sales of menthol cigarettes will likely be concentrated in communities of color, leading to a greater police presence, citations, fines, and arrests for selling a product that for the past 50 years has been legal.

Possible bans on menthol cigarettes are now being considered throughout the United States as add-ons to e-cigarette bans. It must be said that while FDA has deemed teen vaping an “epidemic,” there is no teen menthol cigarette epidemic. The fact is teen cigarette use has steadily been on the decline over the past decade.

Recently in New York, the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner courageously issued a public statement warning against the consequences of a proposed menthol cigarette ban. Sybrina Fulton and Gwendolyn Carr stated, “When you ban a product sold mostly in Black communities, you must consider the reality of what will happen to that very same over-represented community in the criminal justice system.”

Law enforcement leaders like Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), Grand Council of Guardians, and National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers (NABLEO) have stated countless times that a ban on menthol cigarettes will have unintended negative consequences, especially for African Americans.

Over the past 30 years, we have reduced tobacco consumption overall across this country by about 40 percent. And we did not do that with the criminal justice community. We did that with education, we did it with treatment, we did it from a health and educational perspective. Let’s continue with that. Let’s not do something that’s going to end up with these unintended consequences of increasing interaction between police and community members.

Major Neill Franklin (Ret.), Executive Director of the Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP): “I dedicated 34 years of my life to public safety, enforcing the laws that our legislators placed before me. That’s what cops do, and we trust that those laws are well thought out, studied and based upon sound data and evidence. As we begin to mirror the days of alcohol prohibition with tobacco bans, expect the violence and corruption that comes with the illicit market and add something else, the over criminalization of the black community.”

Jiles Ship, President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives – New Jersey (NOBLE): “Banning menthol cigarettes would be a 21st Century attempt at Prohibition, a past failure of government to restrict a previously legal product. As we learned with Prohibition, every time the government tries to ban something, it seems to cause other problems. And unfortunately, a menthol cigarette ban would be another example of government action that disproportionately disrupts the Black community.”

Charles Billips, National Chair Person of Grand Council of Guardians, “The first question I asked is how are they going to implement this ban on menthol cigarettes, knowing that a large number of Black and Brown people smoke menthol cigarettes? It would be best to educate the communities on the affect it has on our health instead of a ban enforced through Law Enforcement.”

As The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once prophetically said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” And the right thing to do for our families and communities and for all who stand for freedom, justice and equality is to speak out against all forms of racial discrimination and disproportionate law enforcement, as well as the systems, laws, bans and policies that perpetuate them.

City Officials & Development Partners Break Ground On Phase One Of The Peninsula, A 100% Affordable Mixed-Use Development In The Bronx

HPD in partnership with the development team Hudson Companies, Gilbane Development Company and MHANY will begin construction on the first phase of the Peninsula.

Phase one will include 56,000 square feet of industrial space—designed to support various Bronx-based small to medium-sized industrial and light manufacturing businesses—in addition to 183 units of deeply affordable housing, studios to three-bedroom units, for extremely low-income New Yorkers. An additional 10 percent of the units will be set aside for formerly homeless individuals. The first residential phase is expected to be completed in 2021.

“The Peninsula is a physical manifestation of this administration’s commitment to building inclusively and equitably,” said Deputy Mayor Vicki Been. “This project transforms the former Spofford Juvenile Detention facility into much needed affordable housing, open space, community facilities, and locally-owned manufacturing and retail space for good-paying jobs.

for a strong, vibrant neighborhood.”

“Today’s groundbreaking marks a significant step toward redevelopment of the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center into a vibrant, mixed-use campus in the South Bronx. The Peninsula will deliver over 700 affordable homes, community facilities, manufacturing space, open space and more to the Hunts Point community while creating hundreds of good-paying jobs for New Yorkers,” said NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett. “We’re grateful for the support of our city partners, Councilmember Rafael Salamanca, Jr., Bronx Bor-

ough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Assembly Member Marcos Crespo, Senator Luis R. Sepúlveda, our development partners, and all of the community leaders and activists who worked hard to make today possible.”

The former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center was in operation for more than 50 years before it closed in 2011. The Peninsula, a 5-acre, mixed-use development will deliver 740 units of affordable housing, approximately 52,000 square feet of publicly accessible open space, 56,000 square feet of light industrial space, including a kitchen step-up space for food business en-

trepreneurs, 53,500 square feet of community space, including a day care center, and artist workspace to be operated by SpaceWorks.

This includes an on-site educational facility that will feature career-readiness programming, a health and wellness center operated

by Urban Health Plan, and 17,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. Once complete, the residential units, ranging in size from studios to four-bedrooms, will be affordable to low-and moderate-income families earning a wide variety of income.

The entire Peninsula project is expected to be completed by 2025.

“The reimagining of Spofford, replacing the juvenile detention center with affordable housing, living wage jobs, day-care opportunities, health opportunities and retail, is a tremendous step forward for The Bronx, emblematic of the transformative changes we have seen in the borough since I took office,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. NYCEDC invested significantly in the industrial component of phase one, including an allocation of $15 million through the IDF award and $3 million through the IDLF program. The $121.5 million residential phase one of the Peninsula was financed

by HPD and HDC. The construction loan will be serviced by Wells Fargo Bank, which is also the Low Income Housing Tax Credit equity investor.

In June 2015, NYCEDC issued a request for expressions of interest (RFEI) to redevelop the vacant site. The Peninsula fulfills a long-term goal of repurposing this site into a thriving community asset and represents a significant milestone for the South Bronx.

COMMENTARY: What Do the 2019 Elections Mean for 2020?

f the 2019 elections are any indication, Republicans need to worry about their viability come 2020. In Virginia, Democrats have majorities in both its upper and lower houses. With a Democratic governor, Virginia has an unprecedented opportunity to shape public policy, especially around gun control, a key concern for many. In West Virginia, the candidate backed by 45 lost. Many will say it is because of the Republican governor, Matt Bevin, was extremely unpopular. If so why was 45 propping him up? He must have thought he had a prayer.

45 notwithstanding, Bevin’s Democratic opponent, Attorney General Andy Beshear, scored a very narrow victory, getting 49.2 percent of the vote, compared to Bevin’s

48.8. Just five thousand votes separate the two men, but a narrow win is still a victory, and 45 has egg on his face.

Usually, when 45 shows up and takes it over the line, the base is supposed to get fired up. Not this time.

While Democrats scored some gains, the Mississippi governor’s mansion is still in Republican hands. Mississippi has the largest concentration of Black people – 39 percent – of any state, but African Americans remain underrepresented among elected officials in Mississippi. Is it voter turnout? An inability to forge a progressive coalition? Or, are race matters so hardwired in Mississippi that Republicans will always prevail?

Speaking of other race matters, the affirmative action ballot measure that appeared on the Washington state ballot failed, which is disappointing news for those who think that we have not yet met diversity goals. Washington state was one of the first to ban affirmative action in 1998 (California’s anti-affirmative action Proposition 209 also passed that year). After California and Washington, other states followed, including Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Arizona, New Hampshire, and Oklahoma. Although the affirmative action measure – Referendum 88 – lost very narrowly, it still failed. That means that state agencies can’t openly recruit diverse candidates, and con-

tracting agencies can’t make special efforts to reach out to those who are underrepresented. And since the anti-affirmative action measure passed in 1998, the numbers of minority and women-owned businesses have dropped in the state.

That’s a step backward!

One of the reasons Referendum 88 failed was because a group of Chinese immigrants was among those who campaigned to defeat the affirmative action measure.

Former governor Gary Locke, an Asian American man who describes himself as a product of affirmative action, fought for the referendum. But the majority of voters rejected the measure. So much for the “people of color” coalition.

Still, it is interesting that a recent Gallup poll showed that a majority of white people in this country narrowly favor affirmative action, with 65 percent advocating affirmative action for women and 61 percent supporting affirmative action for minorities. These levels of support are the highest since Gallup began polling on this issue. Perhaps the recent focus on the wealth gap has sensitized some people to inequality. In any case, as positive as the poll was, it didn’t translate to the vote.

The affirmative action loss is bad news because it may signal other states to avoid pro-affirmative action referenda. Further, the loss confirms that many are satisfied with

the lack of diversity that is commonplace in politics, the workplace, and elsewhere.

And, given the composition of this Supreme Court, challenges to affirmative action that come before them are likely to weaken efforts to encourage diversity in employment, contracting, and education.

Several of the justices have already openly opined that race should matter less. Their overturning of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act is evidence of their race myopia. It is as if these judges are oblivious to the persistence of racism. It is as if they ignore the headlines about the police shootings of Black men. It is as if the wealth gap means nothing to them.

So, what do we learn from the last elections? Democrats have a chance to defeat some Republicans and may yet prevail in the 2020 elections. But race remains a divisive factor in our country. And unfortunately, we have a President who will use race divisiveness to his advantage. Count on the 2020 election to be as contentious as the 2016 election was, but hopefully with different results.

Beethoven 250th Anniversary Concert at Carnegie Hall

n December 16th, Monday night at 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm, at Carnegie Hall, there will be a special concert commemorating Ludwig Van Beethoven’s 250th birthday, sponsored by the Foundation for the Revival of Classical Culture. More than any other musician, and perhaps because of Beethoven’s musical setting of Friedrich Schiller’s poem the Ode to Joy, Beethoven has been called the “Musician of Freedom.”

The Foundation is giving away hundreds of free tickets to NY City high school students, as part of its activities to revive interest in classical music.

Performers include four soloists, some of whom have performed at the Metropolitan Opera, and two

solo pianists performing three of Beethoven’s most famous compositions, the Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor; Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, the “Emperor”; and the Ode To Joy - from Symphony No. 9. Maestro Jiang Jin Yi, Music Director and Principal Conductor of the China National Symphony Orchestra, joins with American pianists, vocalists and choruses, including the Schiller Institute NYC Chorus and the Harlem Boys and Girls Alumni Chorus..

The Harlem Boys and Girls Alumni Chorus is known for its performances of classical as well as popular music. The Alumni Ensemble of Harlem is among the most prominent in the entertainment industry, with appearances

on some of today’s most popular artists’ songs and venues. The group has performed with many award-winning, renowned artists from Wynton Marsalis to Debbie Gibson.

The culminating piece performed will be the Ode to Joy section of Beetho-

O

n the chilly evening of November 20th, as it does every year this time, 125th got lit for the 26th Annual Harlem Holiday Lights celebration. The annual event was orchestrated

by Barbara Askins, CEO of the 125th Street Business Improvement District, in partnership with Manhattan community boards #9 and #10. The presenting sponsors were Con Edison, Zwanger Pesiri, and Harlem Community Development Corporation.

Although dubbed “Harlem Holiday Lights” for the seasonal lights turned on along 125th street, the event was a day of festivities, that included a parade, performances, and entertainment that included both businesses and the

community of Harlem.

Ms. Askins spoke on the importance of the annual event saying “It’s so important. We’re creating a space for the people of Harlem to do what they do best. For 125th to be opened up to the community, at no charge, for everyone to come out and have a good time, a family day, it’s special for all of us. We have so much talent, we have so much history. That’s the purpose of the lights. We want to shine a light on Harlem.

That’s why our theme is ‘Harlem Light it Up.’ Every community kicks off the holidays with something. This is our Holiday kick-off event. Everybody is warming up to it.”

The festivities started as early as 10:00 am and included tremendous participation from Harlem businesses, who

participated with open house receptions. This included Blink Fitness, Ashley Stewart, Lane Bryant, Industrial Bank (Formerly City National Bank), Emblem Health, Zwanger Pesiri Radiology, Columbia University Data and Science Institute, Ryan Health, Harlem Stage, U.S. Census, NYPD, Department of Transportation, NYC Department of Small Business Services, Carver Federal Savings Bank and more.

There were plenty of events for the children, including photo opportunities with Marvel comics Spider-Man and Black Panther, and a day of organized activities at the Children’s Village and the Community Stage.

Lov’n My Curves partnered with the BID to create the first Curvy District and added

tremendous sensuality to the event, with a fashion show for plus-sized models and an appearance by the Curvy Rocketts who also participated in the parade, appearance

by Liris (first plus size model of Project Runway) and site submissions for the LisaRaye PZI Woman National Curvy Model Search. United House of Prayer brought music with the McCoullough Classic band and give-aways for kids.

Prior to the parade, Manhattan Borough President, Gale Brewer hosted her annual VIP reception. Among those in attendance were Assemblywoman Inez Dickens, Assemblyman Al Taylor, Senator Brian Benjamin and parade Grand Marshall Laiona Mitchell. Speaking on the Harlem Lights event, Ms. Brewer said “I have to

give a lot of credit to Barbara Askins. Before nobody was doing anything like this. The lights are gorgeous, they look really fabulous. It says ‘Festival’ and the business people need the business. I am focused on smaller businesses and I would like to see them be successful. When you have this type of joyous holiday, you want people to holiday shop in Harlem and not go elsewhere. That’s why it’s important. It says, that 125th Street is open for business and it is still the great street that it always was.”

The event ushered in the beginning of the holidays and cold weather, with an underlying theme: Ensure that 125th street remains an iconic location culturally and financially.

of the event saying “It sends a lot of messages. I grew up in Harlem. The music would be outside blaring, the lights would come on, it was a festive time. You don’t see as many lights in the windows as before, but this is a great way to kick off the season.

People around start thinking about holiday shopping. We want to bring money back to Harlem, so it stays in Harlem.

That dollar circulates more than one and done??. Support the businesses in Harlem that support the people of Harlem.

Young people have access to people that I didn’t have access to. The message is positive ‘You can achieve!’ You have business people who are business-minded. They are doing different entrepreneurial things. There’s access!”

Retail District Man-

ager Veda Davis joined Barbara Askin’s float and spoke to the community saying “I want to thank the BID, for continually growing the Harlem community. We [Carver] started in 1948 in Harlem and we’re going to continue to be in Harlem!”

The Harlem Lights celebration was a success, and it has seen tremendous growth since its inception. Ms. Askins added on expressing how cul-

ture plays an integral role in the event “Our challenge is finding balance. Finding a balance is really hard in an economic stream. The good news is that everybody works towards it. The biggest thing that we really want to do is add more culture.”

Harlem still has plenty of culture, history, and swag thanks to Barbara Askins and the 125th Street BID, Harlem stays lit.

his past Sunday, November 24th, “In Focus” with Cheryl Wills topic was “The Battle to Keep Small Businesses Going.” Guests Princess Jenkins, owner of The Brownstone in Harlem and Quenia Abreu, President of the NY Women Chamber of Commerce shared their experiences and views on small businesses, especially women-owned businesses in New York.

Cheryl Wills stated, “Thursday is Thanksgiving or, as die-hard shoppers know it, a prelude to Black Friday. But Saturday is the day dedicated to shopping local – Small Business Saturday. There are 220,000 businesses in New York City, 98% of them, small.

These small shops and restaurants help, not only the owners, but the neighborhoods where they operate, providing convenience and jobs. But the city’s small business owners feel like they’re under siege, with soaring rents and

regulations like the $15 minimum wage, paid family and sick leave and soon, paid vacation time for businesses with more than five employees.”

Quenia Abreu is the President of the NY Women’s Chamber of Commerce, which helps women start and maintain their own business, connecting them with vital city services Abreu expressed that most of the small businesses opening in New York at this time are overwhelmingly being started by women. She went on to say, “At the Chamber we have an initiative call ‘Shop Her’ which we promote to the community to shop with women-owned businesses. When asked about the pitfalls of starting a business, Quenia responded that women need to know 1) It takes a village to run a business , so do not try to do it by yourself; 2) Know how much money you need; 3) You must have a plan – it is your roadmap.”

ore than 16 million family members and friends are serving as Alzheimer’s caregivers in the U.S. As families approach the holiday season, there are easy ways to support caregivers that can ease the burden of caregiving and help make the holidays a joyous time for everyone.

“Holidays can be stressful for all of us, but they can be especially demanding for caregivers,” says Ruth Drew, director of information and support services at the Alzheimer’s Association. “It’s easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, but little gestures can go a long way and can be easier than you think – just one hour of help can make a big difference for a caregiver.”

An Alzheimer’s Association survey reports that many caregivers are not getting the help and support they need – an overwhelming 84 percent of caregivers say they would like more support in caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, especially from family members.

The Alzheimer’s Association offers tips for families that can help ease the burden on caregivers this holiday season: 1. Build on traditions: Caregivers may feel overwhelmed by maintaining traditions. Experiment with new traditions that might be less stressful or a better fit for the caregiver. For example, turn the traditional holiday dinner into a lunch.

2. Adjust expectations: The stress of caregiving responsibilities layered with holiday traditions can take a toll. If a caregiver has traditionally hosted family celebrations, offer to host instead.

3. Give them a break: Make a standing appointment to give caregivers a break. Offer to spend time with the person living with Alzheimer’s to allow the caregiver a chance to run holiday errands or engage in an activity that helps he or she recharge.

4. Check in regularly: It’s easy for people to lose touch during the holidays.

Calling to check in, sending a note or stopping by for a visit can make a big difference in a caregiver’s day and help them feel sup-

ported.

5. Tackle holiday to-do lists: Caregivers are often overwhelmed by the demands of caregiving and it can be hard for them to find time to complete simple tasks that others may take for granted. Offer to tackle a caregiver’s holiday to-do list – cooking, cleaning, gift shopping or wrapping.

6. Adapt gift giving.

Caregivers often neglect their own well-being. Select gifts that can help them take care of themselves and provide some relief. For example, gift a household chore service or meal delivery service.

“How We Fight for Our Lives: A Memoir”

ou can’t pretend forever.

Eventually, the ruse gets tired, holding up pretenses becomes a burden, and keeping the game going is harder than telling the truth. You eventually have to break it down and let people know what you’re about. But as in the new book “How We Fight for Our Lives” by Saeed Jones, take care before telling everybody.

Saeed Jones was just twelve years old when his mother first uttered the word “gay,” though he never thought it would be anything she’d ever say. Afterward, the word was “vibrating in the air between us” but there’d be no con-

versation.

Jones knew even then that the word described him. Fascinated by men, he spent hours clipping pictures of male models from his mother’s fashion magazines, and he furtively read everything about gay men and AIDS that he could find at his local Texas library.

The library was also where he had his first sexual encounter with a stranger, at age 16.

That, too, was something he’d never tell his mother but he sensed she knew his truth: some days, he’d find his clippings in shreds, in a plastic bag on the kitchen counter, and he’d just start another collection. There was no discussion then, ei-

By the time he graduated from high school, Jones knew that his life was not “twenty minutes north of Dallas” anymore. He envisioned himself walking around Manhattan, exploring the city, and he aimed for college there but it wasn’t financially possible.

Instead, he went to Bowling Green, Kentucky, and he thrived.

On his own for the first time ever, Jones realized he could be any Saeed Jones he wanted to be, but ultimately, he was freest being his gay self. Away from home, he made friends, joined college groups, drank too much, slept with men he barely knew, and he learned

that “the words ‘gay’ and ‘alone’ weren’t synonyms for each other.”

And then one night, he went home with the wrong man…

On so many levels, “How We Fight For Our Lives” is a heartbreaking and beautiful book.

The most unforgettable parts lie where author Saeed Jones writes about more than just himself and his own observations; a good portion of his tale is his mother’s. She recognized her son’s life but she obviously struggled with knowing-not-knowing and there’s a sharp pain in that, pain that leaps from the pages.

ry – the part that seizes readers by the shirtfront – is spent watching Jones come to terms as he comes of age. Seeing him grow from self-absorbed young man into self-confident adult is satisfying, albeit cringe-worthy, because you come to understand what beats him back as well as what makes his spirit soar.

Knowing all that happens between the two is what’ll keep you turning pages.

Be aware that this memoir can be raw, in both language and meaning, and there are graphic bits inside.

Still, the power you’ll see in “How We Fight for Our Lives” will make you want to tell everybody.
