GOOD NEWS YOU CAN USE!-

There was certainly “Good News You Can Use” this past weekend as we celebrated the Biden/Harris Win. My face streamed with tears of joy as I watched the victory celebration of our new President elect Joe Biden and VP elect Karmala Harris. I hung onto their words of inspiration and commitment.

The fireworks display was amazing. I shared the feeling of this “proud moment” for America. Just good feeling there are more people who love than hate in America. There are more people in America who care about their fellow citizens and willing to show empathy and fight for civil rights for all. There are more people who are committed to just “doing the right thing.”

COVID 19 is still a threat. As doors of restaurants and other businesses and educational institutions opened their door I feel that people began to feel a bit too comfortable. In spite of the growing numbers there are still too many people walking around feeling they are just not scared of COVID – and then they get COVID or someone in their family or someone close to them – is that what has to happen for a wake up call?” I know too many people who feel it is ok to visit their family members who do not live in the house with them and celebrate without a mask – I have quite a few in my own family. I am hopeful many will resist the temptation of having a family gathering this Thanksgiving. or if they must – hopefully they will practice social distancing. You are not immune to someone just because they are in your family. Let us continue to be safe until the numbers become so low they become irrelevant.

There will not be a parade of a dozen or more decorated float, nor gatherings in the street spreading holiday cheer. However, there will be a small caravan of about 3 floats going around Harlem spreading cheer on Nov 18th. (see more info page 9) Remember to shop with local businesses in the community this holiday season and enjoy outdoor dining while the weather is still warm. PONDER THIS! WAIT while they work it out

ince 2016 this nation and the global community has watched drama unfold before its eyes in the administration of the 45th President of the United States. The thought on most minds had to be, can it get any worse or more embarrassing as disrespect and deliberate neglect were expressed blatantly in spoken word and

written on social media by its source, the President himself, Donald Trump.

We waited as a plethora of hopefuls debated and plodded through a campaign season. We waited for the chosen nomination of Kamala Harris for Vice President on the Biden presidential ticket. We waited on lines nearly miles long to blacken the circles on the ballot sheet and validate our right to vote. We waited from November 3rd to November 7th in a state of anxiety watching the numbers inch slowly upward toward the qualified 270 electoral college count.

Finally, we could exhale with celebratory breath as the Biden/Harris number jumped the fence to 274 when Penn-

sylvania confirmed sufficient ballots to bring it on home.

Now, we wait for the overall reaction from those who find it hard to accept defeat.

We are told 70,000 qualified voters are not pleased at the decision and they are still waiting for confirmation of Trump’s accusations of voter fraud. They believe something was stolen from him and it can be turned around

by an onslaught of lawsuits.

At the time of this writing, everyone is waiting in anticipation for the eventual concession from the man who continues to convince himself that he is the winner. Has that happened yet?

If you are stuck in a personal endeavor of attaining what you want when you want it, I suggest you give deep thought to the ramifica-

tions of what it is you want, just in case it actually materializes. If you have life, you will wait your turn, hopefully when it comes around, you will be prepared and worthy.

Trump had his turn in the highest seat in the land and he did not reach out to those professionals who could assist him in doing the job he was not capable of from day one. We cannot forget the do nothings he did so well for too long.

Patience will soften the blow of disappointment, ease your brow, and slow your heartbeat. Patience can open the door for respect and consideration from others. Ranting and raving will not move the hands of the clock. Democrats made it to the needed 270 and then some, howev-

er the count will continue until the last ballot has been scanned.

Stay steady, there is a senatorial runoff coming in early January that holds equal importance for the future. Then, we will wait as the new administration strives to fulfil their hopes and dreams to build back better a nation that has been waiting for renewal and rejuvenation far too long.

Hold on, prayerfully the wait shall not be in vain.

U.S. Tops A One Day Record of 100,000 New COVID Infections

he United States recorded an all-time high of 102,831 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, November 4.

Additionally, hospitals admitted more than 50,000 Americans because of coronavirus.

Reports suggest that the country’s protective gear supply like the N95 face mask is running dangerously low as front-line workers brace for a winter flu season not previously seen.

In cases, the alarming spike brings the total amount of U.S. infections to more than 9.4 million, with over 233,000 deaths.

Members of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) Coronavirus Task Force caution that everyone strictly enforces social distancing, limited gatherings, and mask mandates.

The NNPA is a trade association of the more than 230 African American-owned newspapers and media companies in the United States.

“I am deeply concerned about the record number of COVID-19 cases being diagnosed around the country,” Dr. James Hildreth, one of the world’s leading immunologists and president of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., told Black Press USA on Thursday, November 5, 2020.

Dr. Hildreth is a member of the NNPA Coronavirus Task Force.

“The rise in the number of infections means that hospitalizations are also going to increase, and deaths will follow,” Dr. Hildreth added.

“As has been the case from the beginning, the major burden of dis-

ease and death will fall on communities of color. It is way past time for a nationally coordinated strategy focused on the most vulnerable populations.”

The cases of the coronavirus have continued as the Autumn sets in and winter approaches.

The previous record was set just a week earlier on October 30, when 99,321 people tested positive. According to Johns Hopkins University data, the nationwide 7-day average of new infections is now up by 108 percent in just one month.

In New Jersey, officials released 2,258 inmates from prisons and halfway houses across the state.

According to the New York Times, it was one of the largest single-day reductions of any states’ prison population.

Only prisoners within a year of completing sentences for crimes other than murder and sexual assault are eligible to be released up to eight months early, the newspaper reported.

Over the coming months, another 1,167 prisoners will be freed to reduce the coronavirus risks in crowded lockups where social distancing is next to impossible.

“In all, the releases will result in a roughly 35 percent reduction in New Jersey’s prison population since the start of the pandemic,” the report added.

The rise in cases was predicted

by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s leading infectious disease expert, who in October said the U.S. is in a terrible position to face the coming months of the corona-

virus pandemic.

“We’re in for a whole lot of hurt. It’s not a good situation,” Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told The Washington Post.

“All the stars are aligned in the wrong place as you go into the fall and winter season, with people congregating at home indoors. You could not possibly be positioned more poorly.”

Fauci told the newspaper that the country needs to make an “abrupt change” in its public health practices and behaviors as the holiday season nears.

He also said Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign was “taking it seriously from a public health perspective,” while President Donald Trump is “looking at it from a different perspective,” which he said was “the economy and reopening the country.”

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that nearly 300,000 more people in the United States died from late January to early October this year than the average number of people who died in recent years.

Just two-thirds of those deaths were counted as Covid-19 fatalities, highlighting how the official U.S. death count — now standing at about 233,000 — is not fully inclusive.

The medical website, STAT News, reported that 299,028 more

people died from January 26 to October 3 this year than on average during the same stretch from 2015 to 2019.

Excess deaths also occurred at higher rates among Black people and other minorities than among white people, mirroring the disparities in official U.S. Covid-19 death counts.

“Most likely, the excess deaths account for some otherwise untallied Covid-19 deaths — those who may have died without being tested or who died at home and whose deaths were not counted as caused by the coronavirus,” Andrew Joseph wrote for STAT News.

“But the 300,000 number probably also includes people who died because they were scared to seek out medical care because of the pandemic or had their care interrupted, and because of other causes.”

One limitation of the study, CDC researchers noted, was that the U.S. population is growing and getting older.

More deaths might have occurred in 2020 versus recent years without a pandemic, making a direct comparison harder.

Deaths among white people in 2020 were just 11.9 percent higher than average years, a much lower increase than deaths among Latinx people (53.6 percent higher than average), Asian people (36.6 percent higher), Black people (32.9 percent higher), and American Indians and Alaska Natives (28.9 percent higher).

“These disproportionate increases among certain racial and ethnic groups are consistent with noted disparities in Covid-19 mortality,” the researchers wrote.

ostumes were optional but face masks were mandatory at the recently held “Storytelling Adventure of Black Panther Tales”, presented by the Wyandanch Public Library (WPL) in Suffolk County, New York. Approximately 30 socially distanced kindergarten to preteen age attendees and their parents were read to by the Black Panther character, WPL staff members and others at the WPL community event. In addition, Jason A. Richberg, Suffolk County Legislator provided some encouraging words to the children about the importance of reading.

The children won prizes for answering questions about Black Panther Tales & reading comprehension,

including activity books, shopping bag full of treats, free pizza and pens from JP Morgan Chase Bank. Sponsored by Domino’s Pizza and the Greater Wyandanch Chamber of Commerce, the October 24th event - which began at 11am – took place outdoors at the pizza chain’s Delano H. Stewart Plaza location on 40 Station Drive in Wyandanch, New York.

COVID-19 Worsens Debt Collector Harassment

here is a development affecting 68 million consumers -debt collection regulation. On October 30, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) released its 653- page regulatory revision for enforcement of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), originally enacted in 1977. Since that time, the debt collection industry has grown into a multi-billion industry with over 8,000 firms throughout the country.

For Black America, debt collection was troublesome even before the COVID-19 pandemic. One investigation revealed that in three major cities – Chicago, Newark, and St. Louis – the rate of judgments for debt collection lawsuits was twice as high in mostly Black neighborhoods than in mostly white areas. Nearly a year ago, Urban Institute research found that debt collection disproportionately affects 42% of communities of color.

By contrast, the national average of all consumers was lower in double-digits at 31%, and a wider racial gap among whites at 26%.

The largest portion of debt for communities of color are medical services and student loans. Given the decades of discriminatory policies and practices that perpetuated the nation’s racial wealth gap, these disparities extend to a lack of access to health care as well as a greater dependence on debt to finance higher education. For-profit colleges and institutions are among the latest and most visible financial predators.

In addition, the CFPB’s own 2017 survey found that 44% of borrowers of color reported having been contacted about a debt, compared to 29%

of white respondents. Even when accounting for differences in income, communities of color are disproportionately sued by debt collectors. In fact, 45% of borrowers living in communities of color faced litigation, while only 27% of similarly situated consumers in white areas were sued.

CFPB’s revised rule will allow debt collectors to contact affected consumers up to seven times within seven days – or – within seven consecutive days of a prior telephone conversation about a debt. It is important to note that this allowed communication is for each debt owed. Multiple numbers and types of debt collection can legally multiply the number of allowed contacts and result in harassment for already struggling borrowers.

Secondly, debt collectors who opt to contact consumers by electronic media, must also offer consumers a “reasonable and simple method” to opt out of these communications that include social media, emails and text messages.

Commenting on the new rule, CFPB’s Director, Kathleen Kraninger, said, “Our rule applies these protections to modern technologies. …And our rule will allow consumers, if they prefer, to limit the ability of debt collectors to communicate with them through these newer communications methods.”

But for the 233 consumer, civil rights and legal advocates who filed public comments on the proposed rule, the announcement sent mixed messages for what it proposed as well as what it delayed.

“The devil is in the details, and we will have to scour this complicated rule to make sure that it does not open up new

fronts for debt collectors’ pervasive and abusive treatment of consumers,” said Christine Hines, legislative director at National Association of Consumer Advocates. “Through the guise of modernization, the debt collection rule could open the gate for collectors to aggravate vulnerable consumers with even more harassment and a flood of electronic communications.” Although the October 30 announcement does address the emerging modes of communications, it also delayed action on three specific areas of concern in debt collection.

Guidelines on “zombie” debt, the term used to describe debts that outlived statutory limitations for collection, are expected to be announced this December. Similarly, debt collectors’ practices of leaving messages with third parties or on postcards was not addressed, nor was negative information on consumers’ credit reports.

“As we face a dire and worsening economic crisis, we will be keeping a close eye on the ‘zombie debt’ rule, coming in December, which could leave consumers more vulnerable to deception and harassment,” said Linda Jun, senior policy counsel at Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund. “Collectors should not be allowed to bring expired debt back to life by luring people into making a small payment that revives a debt that would otherwise be past the timeline for a lawsuit.”

Although consumers have a right to expect more and better financial regulation at the federal level, many advocates are calling for states to do their fair share on protecting consumer rights. A new survey from the National Consumer Law Center (NCLC) analyzed how the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands currently protect wages, bank account assets, and personal property from seizure by debt collectors.

Entitled, No Fresh Start 2020: Will States Let Debt Collectors Push Families into Poverty in the Wake of a Pandemic?, warns that once the pandemic recedes, families struggling to get back on their feet are likely to face a wave of debt collector lawsuits for medical bills, back rent, credit card debt, the balance due on repossessed cars, and even utility bills. It recommends that states “protect a living wage for working debtors – a wage that can meet basic needs and maintain a safe, decent standard of living within the community”. The report also recommends that states allow debtors to keep “a reasonable amount of money” to enable debtors to pay daily living costs such as rent, utilities, day care, and transportation.

This gap in state regulation became evident when federal stimulus checks were deposited in families’ bank accounts and then garnished by debt collectors. Further, and according to NCLC, not one state

currently meets five basic standards of debt regulation: - Preventing debt collectors from seizing so much of the debtor’s wages that the debtor is pushed below a living wage, -Allowing the debtor to keep a used car of at least average value; -Preserving the family’s home—at least a median-value home; -Preserving a basic amount in a bank account so that the debtor has minimal funds to pay such essential costs as rent, utilities, and commuting expenses, and -Preventing seizure and sale of the debtor’s necessary household goods.

NCLC identified the worst states that allow debt collectors to seize nearly everything a debtor owns, even the minimal items necessary for the debtor to continue working and providing for a family. States receiving an F grade included: Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, and New Jersey. States rated with a low D grade include: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, and Pennsylvania.

“By reforming their exemption laws, states will not only protect families from destitution but will promote economic recovery by enabling families to spend their money in state and local communities,” said Carolyn Carter, NCLC deputy director and author of the report.

Recalling its earlier research on the family wealth lost as a result of the Great Recession, the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), holds that the effects of families of color losing $1 trillion of wealth, still hinders these same families a decade later.

Until or unless regulators recognize that race and income are inextricably linked, harm-

ful rules will only perpetuate the nation’s wealth gap.

“We applaud the CFPB for dropping the safe harbor that would have widened the door for collectors to use state courts to sue consumers on wrong or incomplete information,” said Center for Responsible Lending policy counsel Kiran Sidhu. “But, the CFPB’s final rule does not do enough to protect communities of color, especially during COVID-19, who are still struggling to recover from the Great Recession because of discriminatory exclusion from the financial mainstream and predatory inclusion into highcost loan products.”

Sidhu also emphasized how the right kind of policy reform was important to stop debt collection law firms and attorneys from filing thousands of collection lawsuits each year that harass consumers on debts that may not even be owed.

To phrase it another way – It’s hard to build family wealth when you’re burdened with heavy debts and harassed by abusive debt collection practices. No amount of collector harassment will result in payments when no funds are available to pay past due bills.

Further, any policy that denies indebted consumers the ability to preserve essential services like housing or utilities is unsustainable. The financial disparities that Black America strives to endure would significantly diminish if an inclusive financial marketplace became a reality. The crux of many burdensome debts is the lack of affordable and accessible financial services.

It is time to stop seizing our hard-earned monies.

Women More Likely to Face Housing Insecurity in Pandemic-Led Recession

The pandemic has been a startling setback for women who had been narrowing the gender gap in recent years.

At the beginning of the year, more women than ever before were in the workforce, incomes were rising along with the home values of women-headed households.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only interrupted this period of growth, but

may have pushed women backward in housing and employment by impacting their participation in the workforce and their potential earnings well into the future.

• “She-cession” was a term coined1 to describe the disparate impacts this pandemic’s recession is having on women after the 2008 financial crisis was dubbed the “mancession” for the ways in which men were more severely impacted by Wall Street’s collapse.

However, the similarities end with the moniker. A new Zillow analysis finds that year-over-year unemployment claims are 10 times higher for women during this pandemic than what men experienced in the Great Recession.

Women are more likely to work in service-sector industries, which are the most affected by the pandemic, and are feeling the effects of unemployment much more severely. In May, unemployment claims for women were up 1,368 percent year over year. At the peak of the Great Recession in 2009, unemployment claims for men were up 137 percent year over year. At the peak of the COVID-19-driven re-

cession in May, unemployment claims for men were up 983 percent year over year, a record high, but still significantly less than the spike women experienced.

Black and Latinx women are faring even worse, with persistent double-digit unemployment rates as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“She-cession” is a term reportedly coined by labor economist Armine Yalnizyan Four times as many women as men left the workforce in September alone. That adds up to nearly 865,000 women or 80 percent of all workers who dropped out of the labor force last month.

Unemployment and underemployment have put a strain on the ability of women-led households to afford housing. A Zillow survey from the Harris Poll2 found that women were more likely to say they would not be able to make the current month’s housing payment – rent or mortgage – if their household lost a primary source of income.

“Direct rental assistance and extending unemployment assistance could help women cover housing payment obligations and keep

women afloat and in their homes for the time being,” said Zillow Senior Economist Cheryl Young. “However, these are short-term fixes. Longer term solutions like creating more affordable housing stock, economic policies that assist working parents, and increased voucher availability, are vital to ensuring that housing burdens don’t fall disproportionately on women.”

Previous Zillow research illustrates how renters have been hit hardest in this recession, and female householders overall are more likely to be renters; 37 percent of female householders are renters, compared to 31 percent for men.

According to Zillow’s analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey data, 45 percent of female renter households are cost-burdened, spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing, compared to 36 percent of male renter households. Nearly a quarter (24%) of female renter households are severely cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than half their income on housing, compared to 17 percent of male renter households.

Women of color are even

more likely to be cost-burdened by housing. More than half (51%) of Latinx female renter households and 49 percent of Black female renter households are cost-burdened. More than a quarter (27%) of both Hispanic and Black female renter households are severely cost-burdened. Any loss of income, even temporarily, puts cost-burdened renter households at risk of housing instability.

Mothers of school-age children are reportedly taking longer to regain their employment, as many child care centers remain closed and schools turn to virtual or hybrid learning models.

A Zillow analysis of the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse survey3 shows working mothers were three times more likely than working fathers to cite child care as the main reason they were out of work (22.1% of mothers, 7.7% of fathers).

Beyond the social and cultural pressures on women to be the primary caretakers in their households, there are significantly more female-headed households led by single parents. Female-headed renter households are more than twice as likely as male-headed renter households to be single parents — 70 percent of mothers who are household heads are single parents, compared to only 32 percent of fathers.

• The U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse survey covers 12 weeks of the pandemic from April 23rd through July 21, Reports suggest the double hit of being more likely to work in industries affected by layoffs, and being the main caretaker of children will affect women’s labor force participation and earnings trajectories for decades to come.

Prior to the current coronavirus outbreak, women-led households were on an upward trajectory. Home values of female-headed households have been creeping closer to home values overall. The ratio of women’s home values to home values overall is 95.9 percent as of August 2020, up from 91.9 percent a decade ago, signifying there is progress being made. In labor, women were making up a larger share of the workforce and seeing incomes rise, possibly contributing to the increase in home values. This new analysis from Zillow finds that without interventions, these slow and steady improvements toward housing equality may be jeopardized by this unequal recession.

fter days of counting in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arizona, President Obama’s former Vice President, Joe Biden, and California Senator, Kamala Harris, won the 2020 race for the White House.

News of their victory sparked spontaneous celebrations around the country. In Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New York and Atlanta people took to the streets on foot and in cars in celebration with Biden flags and signs.

a crowd unseen in months since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March.

In Washington, DC, cars honked horns driving up and down Connecticut Avenue and around the White House. A large crowd assembled at Black Lives Matter Plaza on 16th Street as close to Lafayette Park as they could get near The White House. Streets around The White House were fenced off creating a large perimeter around the streets that would allow people to get clear video and still photos of the building.

The level of celebration in several cities was reminiscent of the revelry seen after a sports team wins a championship. Bottles of champagne were opened on the street and music played loudly. Relief after four years of Donald Trump’s decision making and endless controversies, tensions and policy decisions were clearly on display in public.

The backdrop, 235,000 Americans dead as the result of the coronavirus pandemic, was not lost on the man who

will be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. In his first speech after being elected, President-elect Biden said he would, “marshal the forces of decency, the forces of fairness, the forces of science, the forces of hope” and promised his first job would be tackling the coronavirus epidemic.

“Our work begins with getting COVID under control,” Biden told thousands of people in Wilmington, Delaware.

“I was having all these flashbacks about my life ... and started thinking about this guy [Amadou] who used to sell me my newspaper sometimes…” I was a graduate student at New York University, and he was very curious to know about my computer studies and had told me on several occasions that he was about to enroll in school to study computer science. That never happened though. On February 4, 1999, Amadou was shot 19 times

by New York City police [officers] because they mistook his wallet for a firearm. That’s a memory that I carry around with me. That memory always comes with a question: Why? The four officers who killed Amadou Diallo made a snap decision based on years of conditioning. That conditioning and other questionable circumstances allowed them to draw their weapons and fire after a split second of thinking. I wanted to create a book that intro-

duced doubt to all of the conditioning that we all experience. I wanted to try to undo the mental grooming that happens to us. I think African-Americans have one of the most diverse cultures on the planet but few people are conditioned to expect that.”

West offers insights into the current times and said, “COVID ...has triggered the release of a lot of pent-up anxiety.

These first six months of the pandemic remind me of the three near-death

situations that I’ve experienced. After each time of nearly dying, I had an appreciation for being alive that, ironically, only comes with the threat of losing your life. I remember savoring my favorite foods as I ate them and valuing my friendships more. I think that because of COVID we are all collectively experiencing this appreciation for life in an American context. When we are threatened with death being caused by something we can’t see, then

we are oddly invigorated to assert ourselves—almost like this nationwide YOLO moment. In the same context, we are reminded that we ARE human, and our time is limited. I think there are a lot more people looking for meaning and wanting to make a contribution to make society better.”

Friday the 13th

his is not the first time I am writing about the misunderstanding of Friday the 13th.

After a recent conversation with a friend, I realized that many people still considered it to be a day of misfortune and bad luck.

My good friend Lloyd Strayhorn is a very experienced African

American numerologist. When I have questions about the topic, I consult him.

In Ancient Kemet, the number 13 was a symbol of power.

Lloyd writes “the ancients described 13 as a symbol of power, which if wrongly used, wreaks destruction upon itself. He who understands the number 13 will be given power and dominion.” Until very recently, the wisdom and philosophical thoughts of ancient Kemet were kept secret from the masses.

our favorite player loves getting buckets.

And that’s good – that’s the goal of the game, after all, right? It’s called basketball because that’s what you’re supposed to do: put the ball in the basket, dunk it right in the bucket. You might need help to do that now, but practice, and maybe you’ll be a pro someday. Maybe you’ll be like the players in “Swish!” by Suzanne Slade, illustrated by Don Tate.

Ka-thumpa, ka-thumpa, ka-thumpa. that’s what people heard all day, if they lived near Chicago’s South side. It was “those boys” and their basketballs, do-

ing “nonstop layups, allnet free throws, and skyhigh jump shots.”

Sure, they were talented boys. Everyone knew that but they were Black and there were not many options for them, so those boys joined a traveling team and they met Abe Saperstein. That was when

things really started happening: it was Saperstein’s idea to re-name the team the “Harlem Globetrotters,” which made it seem like they’d dribbled everywhere around the world.

It was almost as if they already had: the team played ball nearly every night in small towns all

over the country, but their style was different. Because people didn’t like seeing any Black players beat the hometown White teams, the boys had to learn new tricks. They did a “One-finger ball spinning.”

They did their “Rapid-fire mini dribbling.” People began to laugh, and they

began to enjoy the show as the “Trotters” racked up wins.

But it wasn’t all fun: there were lots of places where the Globetrotters weren’t welcome. They couldn’t get a drink of water just anywhere.

Some hotels turned them away. Sometimes, they weren’t allowed in restaurants.

And still, they played because they were athletes!

Even when most teams in the NBA wouldn’t hire Black players, the Harlem Globetrotters were real winners on the court. They proved it by beating the Minnesota Lakers! They could beat anybody!

With the kind of quickpaced, wild fun that you get at a Harlem Globetrotters game, author Suzanne Slade brings that fast action to the page with a story of racism, perseverance, and resilience.

While there’s a main focus on just one generation here – roughly the Depression years through the early 1950s – Slade proceeds to show the overall evolution of the team by including a timeline and additional material. She also briefly touches upon individual players, but not more recent ones, which may disappoint grown-ups; kids whose hands are practically glued to a round, dimpled ball won’t notice that omission at all.

This narrative would be the lesser without artwork by Don Tate. Kids will love his movement on the pages; adults will have difficulty not hearing “Sweet Georgia Brown” in their heads. That makes “Swish!” fun, it’s fast, and if there’s a future NBA or WNBA fan in your house, your child will love it by the buckets.

The 125th Street Business Improvement District (BID) in partnership with Manhattan Community Boards 9 and 10 is pleased to announce Harlem Holiday Lights 2020 is still on!!!

This has been a hard year for our nation and especially the Harlem community due to COVID-19.

Although we have been forced to make adjustments to protect the health and safety of community members, we are not canceling the 27-year tradition!
