NYC Multicultural Festival- Building a Safer City through Cultural Celebration

J

oyce Adewumi was concerned about the hate crimes increasing in the city she loves. “Puerto Ricans on Dominicans, Africans against African Americans,” she recalled. In an effort to reduce hate crimes and increase appreciation of the cultural diversity in the city Adewumi under her nonprofit New York African Chorus Ensemble (NYACE) organized the first NYC Multicultural Festival in 2009.

“I thought about the festival as a way we can learn from each other and celebrate cultural diversity rather than use it as something that causes tension or hate,” said Adewumi.

Now celebrating its 10th year the NYC Multicultural Festival will be held June 1, from 12:00- 6:00pm on St. Nicholas Ave btw. 141st and 145th streets, and on June 8, from 11:00am6:00pm, at Jackie Robinson Park, 85 Bradhurst Avenue and 148th Street.

This year NYACE partnered with the NYPD 30th Precinct, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, St. James Presbyterian Church, Harlem School for the Arts and other government officials and charitable organizations to produce the festival.

The festival will feature vendors selling food from around the world and activities in front of the Harlem School of the Arts for children, like Guatemalan doll making and Japanese origami. Harlem School of the Arts will be open for children and families to learn more. The NYPD will also bring out their rock climbing wall for the kids.

festival in Harlem for a purpose, to attract those who have never had the chance to experience Harlem: “I live here and I work here. It’s time for people to come to our community and see its beauty.”

She shared a story of a Bangladeshi man she met at a multicultural festival from Jackson Heights who had been in NYC for 40 years, but never visited Harlem because of stereotypes he heard like it being a “filthy” and “dangerous” community. “It represents the negative perception people have of black and brown people who make up Harlem. We are challenging these negative ideas,” said Adewumi.

performances by award winning groups like Niall O’Leary School of Irish Dance Academy, Ayazamana Ecuadorian Dance Group, Ballet Nepantla (Spain), New York Chinese Cultural Center, Capulli (Mexico), Chae (Columbia), Garima Gyawali (Nepal) Lisanigu Bodoma (Caribbean), Uptown Dance Company and many more.

Adewumi noted the help that interns play in making the festival happen. She expressed excitement to work with these young people. She has had international interns from South Korea, and this year from French Guyana.

“They are so proud of themselves when they see this come together. Who knows when

they go home if they will talk about their experience and influence someone to do this type of festival in their country” said Adewumi.

With all the work that goes into the NYC Multicultural Festival, Adewumi knows it’s worth it through the responses that she gets from the community: “I am excited that people want this festival. Not only has the neighborhood come out to thank us for offering a day to just play on the street without having to worry about traffic, but also more organizations representing more countries are coming out to participate. PONDER THIS! Old Is Not Easy

as anyone ever told you getting old is easy? My Granny was probably the most outspoken person I have ever met. She would not bite her tongue or hold back her opinion, but she never said getting old was easy.

I remember watching her movements getting slower and more pronounced as she stepped gingerly as if on eggs, making her way to Birthday 101. As she watched me watching her, she would say “have to be careful not to fall.”

Thanks to God, she never suffered a fall, never used a cane or needed a walker.

She would rub her knees and twirl her ankles for circulation at every sitting, yet she never com-

plained. She just did not discuss it. Her back was straight at a mere four feet five, her thick bifocals allowed her to see all that she wanted to see, and her ears provided hearing what she thought was worthwhile.

Those hands that rubbed her knees for warmth and comfort were the same hands that she used to braid her hair into

the cornrows she wore all my life. She was quick to offer a piece of scripture from the family Bible that was always opened and close by to resolve an issue or remind us that God’s grace is sufficient.

She never said getting old was easy. She did say, “you’ll understand it by and by.” I often asked Granny when by and by would be and the slow shake of her head from side to side was all to be said about it. I understood I would have to wait until it came to be. Well, it arrived just this past week.

After greeting across aisles to my family church members on this past Sunday, I settled in ready to hear a sacred sermon. The congregation was invit-

ed to stand for the Call to Worship and then it happened. Both knees as if in concert defied action. The usual pride I had in being able to rise unassisted without a grasping grip on the back of the pew in front of me disappeared on the spot. I reached forward as if the wood at hand was a lifeline to haul myself upward. I could barely participate in the responsive recitation, for thinking about what had suddenly occurred. The answer came with truth; expect the unexpected today - by and by has arrived.

After what seemed an eternity, I lowered myself down to the seat and immediately become my Granny, rubbing my knees in search of comfort. If

excuses are handy, we will surely evoke one; i.e., the church is a bit chilly this morning, maybe I over did it somehow, but when was that. The truth is our knees, hips and back have carried the load for a long time. The time will come when each joint of our body will have its way, to participate or not.

In the meantime, stay steady, but keep moving as good as you can in some form of exercise, drink lots of water as they say and even though getting old is not easy, life is good and there is lots of fun and roads yet to travel.

Third Avenue BID Opens South Bronx Business Lab in Mott Haven

he Third Avenue Business Improvement District opened the South Bronx Business Lab on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 11 Bruckner Boulevard in the South Bronx. The Lab provides a space to grow the entrepreneurial ecosystem that is the South Bronx. It is the first business lab in the Bronx and is home to booksellers, artists, art and tourism organizations, restaurateurs, and more. The Lab is part of the Third Avenue Business Improvement District’s anti-displacement programs and seeks to build a stronger partnership among South Bronx businesses for organizing and collaboration.

Prevent Long Hot Summer of Violence in America

cross the nation and throughout the world, millions of people are still morning the tragic and senseless killing of our Brother Nipsy Hustle. We are again reminded of the terrible sickness of violence in communities across the United States.

We should not wait for another one of our hero’s to be killed before we stand up to take action to prevent this plague of violence from continuing. Nipsy was a great example of what can happen when a young man from our community puts his head down and transcends the traps that are laid by the enemies of our youth in America.

Let me be clear: All those who have the capacity and opportunity to do their part to end the senseless spiral of violence but do nothing by their omission are aligned with the forces that are against our communities’ safety, resilience and progress. Complacency with violence directly contributes to its devastating

continuance.

There are, however, very successful programs in nearly every hot pocket in our inner cities that are alarmingly underfunded. Those effective antiviolence programs are in constant need of volunteers.

I have personally witnessed and worked closely with so many extremely productive and amazing programs that in fact prevent violence.

Effective programs like Erica Ford’s “Life Camp” in Queens, New York or Captain Dennis Muhammed’s “Peace Keepers” efforts in over 20 cities are in need of additional funding and support from city, state and federal agencies. Of course, in addition, the private sector and local community support systems must also be summoned to help out. Now is the time to act to prevent future violence.

These two programs are shining examples of how much better and effective local interventions are than the police who in many cases are disconnected, not trusted, bru-

tal and too often fatal. But despite the results of current research studies on what works, city budgets in too many states are now being turned over to ineffective police containment strategies because of the undue influence of police unions and other conservative political forces. Violence cannot be contained. It has to be prevented by trusted and effective community-based programs.

Are we prepared to sit back this summer and watch more than 50 of our kids get shot and killed every weekend in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Detroit, Miami, or in St. Louis? Because if we don’t act urgently now, that’s what is gonna happen!

Where is the national de-

bate or priority about our children’s safety from violence?

It appears that the hip-hop community is the only authentic and caring voice that is speaking out effectively and consistently on this important issue and “Taking back responsibility.”

Most religious and political figures won’t bring it up publicly or earnestly unless we do it first. I will do my part. Will you?

No matter how big or small your impact might be, everyone’s input and support is needed now. Even if you only will just write to your member of the U.S. Congress to urge more funding for community antiviolence programs, that will also be helpful.

The clock is ticking. The summer is coming. Are you prepared to lose a love one or a friend to violence in our communities? Or are you going to join me and others to help make a lasting difference? Thank you for your response. With great love, all things are possible.

very state in the U.S., as well as in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, has a Housing Finance Agency (HFA) that provides low- and moderate-income individuals and families with the opportunity to find a home or apartment that meets their budget and quality-of-life needs.

According to Stockton Williams, executive director of the National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA), in 2017 alone, state HFAs provided $28 billion to finance affordable homeownership for more than 152,000 households, 26 percent of which were minority-headed households.

The NCSHA was created by the state agencies more than 40 years ago, Williams said, to help share best practices. “HFAs are constantly learning from each other,” Williams adds, “not only sharing best practices, but solving emerging challenges on a collaborative basis. NCSHA facilitates these exchanges and augments them with additional analysis and support.”

Some of the state HFA practices that NCSHA helps to promote are careful underwriting of borrowers, close oversight of lenders, proactive loan servicing and counseling assistance to borrowers who need it, Williams noted.

“A 2018 study,” according to Williams, “found that state HFA loans were much less likely to experience defaults or foreclosures than loans from other sources to similar borrowers.

“According to the study,” he continued, “not only are HFAs more likely to require full documentation and careful underwriting, they also serve as a third-party monitor on lenders originating loans through a

state program, creating an additional incentive for careful screening by the lender.”

Like other state housing finance agencies, the North Carolina HFA (NCFHA), which began operating in 1973, serves the broad mandate of providing affordable housing opportunities for state residents whose needs are not being met by the market, explains Connie Helmlinger, manager of public relations and marketing for the NCHFA. The work of her agency, Helmlinger notes, is divided into two main areas: providing assistance with home ownership and with rental housing.

“We have helped more than 115,000 individuals and families purchase

homes,” she said. “We do that by offering mortgages with competitive rates and down payment assistance for buyers.”

The NCHFA offers a variety of assistance programs that seek to help low- and moderate-income homebuyers in such categories as first-time buyers, military veterans, senior citizens and people with disabilities. Detailed information about such programs as NC Home Advantage Mortgage, NC Home Advantage Tax Credit and NC IST Home Advantage, and how potential buyers can qualify for them, can be found at www.ncfha.com Most of NCFHA’s work is done in association with partners, including local governments,

nonprofit organizations and private developers.

“One of our self-help programs,” Helmlinger says, “is working with Habitat for Humanity. They take the money we provide and roll that into their own money to provide better mortgages for people who buy their homes.”

Helmlinger notes that the NCHFA does not work directly with buyers — except for being involved in final approvals and underwriting — but works directly with lenders after buyers have contacted a loan officer about applying for one of their assistance programs.

“The money is coming from us,” says Helmlinger, “but it’s the lender that is managing the whole process.”

‘The Day I Became Black’: Bill Posley blasts a ‘politically incorrect’ reality bomb against racial divide

But at the age of 10 something happened that made him suddenly see the world in a totally different perspective and realize that people do judge a book by its cover. Although half white he’s considered 100% black and he is forced to renounce his mother’s heritage in the name of politically correct and defined conventions.

In a conversation with Posley I asked if he felt this play is helping him to be free to be himself and at the same time is aiding people to understand the conflict a bi-ethnical person goes through.

Yes. Identity is something we all struggle with- He said - the concept of how we are seen versus how we see ourselves. Doing this show has helped me get in tune with who I am and shed the labels society has put on me over the years. I believe conversations

like the one this show can start is how we come to know ourselves and each other. If people don’t know what you are going through they can’t relate and when people relate they can empathize and empathy is a key ingredient to our humanity.” And added -“with multi-cultural people growing within the population my story is becoming more and more common. I never saw my story on Tv or in the world and when you don’t see your story you feel like you don’t matter. When people can share their stories it make us accessible to them”.

When I asked why he is specifically inviting Trevor Noah to see the show he said:” Trevor has influenced me with his work on being biracial, he has been an inspiration and even though we grew up worlds apart we have this shared experience”.

When asked about the future he concluded:” I would love to perform this play at colleges, for students and one day film it as a comedy special.

My next project is ‘The Day I Joined The Army’ a one man show about my experience in the military.

y name is Dennis Richmond, Jr. and I am a 24-year-old young Black man from Yonkers, New York. On May 23rd, 2019, I graduated with a Master of Science in Education from Sarah Lawrence College. Attending Sarah Lawrence College was eye-opening for me.

I was extremely cultured shocked. Despite being culture shocked, for the past two years I did nothing but make sure that I did my work and put in my all in my writing assignments.

I would complete assignments early, participated in class discussions, and even traveled to different cities through the My

Brother’s Keeper Program.

The gag is, I was not the only college student, or student for that matter, who had been working hard for their degree.

There are students across the world who have stayed up late, woke up early, stressed over classes, and weathered the weather to make it to class. For all that, I want to wish the class of 2019, the global class of 2019, a huge congratulations! We did it!

I’m sure for some, it took a lot of mitigating, tears, laughs, and hard work, but it’s all over now. Another chapter of life is closed, and another is open.

ight now, I am listening to the sound of jackhammers chipping away at the street below my window. The massive instruments are sending their vibrations up the outside walls and I can feel the floor inside the apartment trembling. As annoying and nerve-racking the non stop vibrations are, thank goodness it’s only

temporary, which leads me to the “stuff” for this week. Why is it that just when you think that you have everything under control, things are going great and life is good; when seemingly overnight something happens to chip away at your comfort zone?

Some of these events will have a lasting effect, others a temporary effect on you and your family. Maybe the events are beyond your control and others occurred because you (oops!) . . . missed your cue! Regardless, changes in your life can, at times, be unsettling and throw you off balance.

How do you cope?

Now back to that jackhammer . . . . . you don’t have to be the operator to know that the machine jars your body when it is running. The operator (life) holds steady, with both feet planted firmly on the ground focused on the task at hand. His efforts cause partial destruction of the targeted

area (life shaking things up a bit); for our purposes, your life. After turning the hammer off he/she steps back to survey the progress made and then proceeds. Unless you are a skilled operator, the jarring would throw you off balance and you might have difficulty thinking clearly. Your jackhammer is whatever issue it is you are grappling with at any time. It’s during the few moments of quiet and stillness; when the operator is checking out the progress, that you have an opportunity to fight back! Use that time to plan and marshal the physical, mental and emotional stamina that you can call upon to get you through the tough times. That could mean

getting your financial house in order, a career change that you make or just reviewing your life and planning the changes you want to make.

One thing is for sure, you know that you can count on changes in life. Don’t wait to hear or feel the vibration of the jackhammer chipping away at your foundation. Life’s door is always open, the opportunity to improve your life awaits . . . don’t miss your cue!

ometimes, you feel like you could just dye.

Or curl, or cut, or braid. Some days, you want a change in style, a different ‘do, maybe something like you’ve seen in a magazine. Or you want to be the person who makes that happen, so read “Becoming a Hair Stylist” by Kate Bolick and see if you have what it takes.

You have to think that people have fussed with their hair for as long as people have had hair.

Egyptian lovelies, for instance, used juniper berries to hide their grays.

Roman women used leeches fermented in vinegar as a dye. Wealthy

women a century ago had servants do their ‘do’s; just sixty years ago, few people washed their hair more than once a week and most women did their hair at home.

Says Bolick, America’s first hair salon belonged to Martha Harper, who’d inherited a secret formula for hair growth in the late 1880s. During Harper’s time, women grew their hair as long as possible; short hair was “a sign of poverty.” For Black women, Madame C.J. Walker’s potions and pomades revolutionized how their hair was styled, and she became a millionaire for it.

In the 1950s and 60s, though, Vidal Sassoon

and Vogue magazine made going to the salon a thing every woman wanted to do: getting your hair styled at a salon was suddenly affordable, and stylists were believe to be specialists with skills – even though, at the same time, people often callously thought that styling hair was a career for those lacking intelligence.

Today becoming a hair stylist takes a lot of hard work, training, and keen people skills. You’ll have to get a certain amount of schooling, depending on the state in which you want to practice, and you’ll learn the basics first, followed by human anatomy, sanitation, and chemistry. You’ll get
