Justice Tanya R. Kennedy Penn Commence Challenge - "A Call to Action"

n May 11, 2019, Supreme Court Justice Tanya R. Kennedy, a Penn State alumna and former supervising judge of Civil Court in New York County delivered a powerful Commencement Address for Penn State Law. She began: “It was thirty years ago when I graduated here from Eisenhower Auditorium and I would never imagine that I would return as a commencement speaker. I am the epitome of an ordinary person who has been blessed to do extraordinary things. I hope that my presence here today will inspire and encourage someone that they can also do extraordinary things.”

After congratulating the 265 graduates for their

hard work, determination and academic achievement, Hon. Kennedy praised their ‘shining example of diversity at its best’ -representing 34 states and 33 countries - and concluded: “Be proud of yourself and your accomplishments and pat yourself on the back.

This is an Order from the Court’. “ Excerpt from Justice Kennedy’s speech follows :”Today, we enjoy certain freedoms because of various court decisions and legislation [..] but we live in perilous times and are faced with pressing issues regarding immigration, voting rights, pay inequity, gender inequality, gender-based violence, racial intolerance, threats against the press, the rule of law and the indepen-

dence of the judiciary. [..]

Who will be bold and fearless enough to take a stand on these issues and to speak truth to power?

The Boys & Girls Club of Harlem Use Disney Grant to Promote S.T.E.A.M. Learning Marisol Rodríguez

n May 10th the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem, 521 W. 145th Street, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their state-ofthe-art Center of Innovation, funded by Disney. The Harlem branch received a portion of a $1 million grant Disney gave Boys & Girls Clubs of America in celebration of the record-breaking success of Marvel Studios’ Black Panther and the theme of technology in the film.

Executive Director Dominique Jones spoke with Harlem Community Newspapers about the day, saying the kids were excited to see the transformation of the space. “They were so excited to participate in the activities and see how the equipment works,” said Jones. She added that the room has been decorated with bright colorful decorations and art that highlights S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) themes:

“We created a special place for kids. They notice when a room feels warm and inviting,” said Jones.

Local elected officials Sen. Robert Jackson, State Sen. Brian Benjamin, Assemblyman Al Taylor, and New York City Council Member Ben Kallos attended the unveiling of the space. Sen. Jackson also announced on behalf of the state elected officials that $175,000 from the New York State budget will be allocated to the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem.

The Boys and Girls Club of Harlem has been under the leadership of Jones for the past four years. She is passionate about exposing students to S.T.E.A.M. because of the universal skills it helps youth build. “Exposure to S.T.E.A.M is not just about making them aware of the principles, it really fosters exploration and collaboration. These are skills that are really important to be able to find work in the 21st century. We’ve created a space

where they can conceptualize ideas, develop a plan and work as a team,” said Jones In addition to the Disney grant, Jones said other sponsors like Google, Capital One and Imagine Science have contributed funding that has gone towards purchasing technological tools like laptops and tablets. Jones said the Disney grant has been used to buy new equipment like a 3-D printer, but it is also being used for operational cost of hiring teachers to help kids with learning to use the technology. “This grant will be used to help us develop programing so we can truly give our kids the most robust learning experience possible and scale our efforts so more kids can get serviced,” Jones commented.

a partnership with the National Park Service called ‘Ultimate Journey’ where youth go to parks to study the ecology. The S.T.E.A.M. space will help students unpack the concepts they are learning in nature.

The center also allows students tools for film making and photography.

Summer Camp programs will begin on July 8 at the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem. Campers will have access to the Center of Innovation and Jones said they also might be offering S.T.E.A.M specific classes for non-campers this

n May 14 the Bronx Borough President Ruben Díaz Jr. hosted the fifth annual Bronx Week Labor Breakfast and the annual Business Day Luncheon honoring labor and business leaders in the borough.

The Bronx County Courthouse was the site of the Labor Breakfast where honorees included: DC 1707 Executive Director Kim Medina; 32BJ Secretary/Treasurer Kyle Bragg; Maf Misbah Uddin – Local 1407 President, ASAAL National President, DC 37 Treasurer; NYC Central Labor Council Political Director Lucia Gomez; and New York City and Vicinity District Council of Carpenters Executive Secretary/Treasurer Joseph A. Geiger.

“We support our brothers and sisters in labor on the ground in rallies throughout the year, so this event serves to celebrate their overall efforts for working Bronxites and to connect different groups in the labor community for Bronx Week,” said Borough Presi-

dent Díaz Jr. who co-hosted the breakfast with New York State Assembly Speaker Carl E. Heastie; New York State Assembly Member Marcos Crespo, along with local labor leaders.

Later in the day, Borough President Díaz and the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC) honored Bronx Business owners during Bronx Week’s annual Business Day Luncheon at Tosca Marquees in Throggs Neck. Marlene Cintron, President of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation co-hosted the luncheon, sponsored by Anheuser Busch Corporation.

Cintron said she was sick of seeing Bronx being the number one county in the state for unemployment, so she became involved in supporting economic development of the borough. “The BOEDC is proud to support all of our local titans of industry and to see Bronx businesses thriving. We will continue to work closely with the business community to ensure their ongoing suc-

The Main Stage featured two days of celebrity and local chefs offering cooking demonstrations for dishes from their restaurants. Chef Scott Conant, who has appeared on the Food Network, presented a demo with Chef Charles Gabriel of Charles Country Pan Fried Chicken. “I was here year one, it doesn’t get any better than this, I see the growth, I love the potential, if you’re not here, you’re missing out,” said Conant.

Another chef pair that presented was Actor and Chef David Burtka and Chef Marcus Samuelsson.

Burtka mentioned he lived near Morningside Park for 7 years and still lives Uptown.

“There is a heartbeat of the city that is in Harlem,” he said. Samuelson also expressed a special feeling about the neighborhood: “I moved to Harlem when I was soul searching a little bit...and Harlem brought me back love for New York City.”

Harlem EatUp! is the creation of co-founders Chef Marcus Samuelsson of Red Rooster and Herb Karlitz, CEO of Karlitz & Company, a leading firm in culinary event production. They both expressed an excitement for the 5th year anniversary and deep appreciation for Harlem.

“At the birthday of 5 we have great weather and the festival has grown. We wouldn’t be able to do it without the Harlem community,” said Samuelsson.

“The events we’re doing are bringing people here who have never been to Harlem,” said Karlitz. According to the event’s founding sponsor Citigroup, Harlem EatUp! attracts visitors from 7 countries and 32 states.

ight now, I am listening to the sound of jackhammers chipping away at the street below my window. The massive instruments are sending their vibrations up the outside walls and I can feel the floor inside the apartment trembling. As annoying and nerve-racking the non stop vibrations are, thank goodness it’s only

temporary, which leads me to the “stuff” for this week. Why is it that just when you think that you have everything under control, things are going great and life is good; when seemingly overnight something happens to chip away at your comfort zone?

How do you cope?

Now back to that jackhammer . . . . . you don’t have to be the operator to know that the machine jars your body when it is running. The operator (life) holds steady, with both feet planted firmly on the ground focused on the task at hand. His efforts cause partial destruction of the targeted

area (life shaking things up a bit); for our purposes, your life. After turning the hammer off he/she steps back to survey the progress made and then proceeds. Unless you are a skilled operator, the jarring would throw you off balance and you might have difficulty thinking clearly. Your jackhammer is whatever issue it is you are grappling with at any time. It’s during the few moments of quiet and stillness; when the operator is checking out the progress, that you have an opportunity to fight back! Use that time to plan and marshal the physical, mental and emotional stamina that you can call upon to get you through the tough times. That could mean

getting your financial house in order, a career change that you make or just reviewing your life and planning the changes you want to make.

One thing is for sure, you know that you can count on changes in life. Don’t wait to hear or feel the vibration of the jackhammer chipping away at your foundation. Life’s door is always open, the opportunity to improve your life awaits . . . don’t miss your cue!

“Ladysitting: My Year with Nana at the End of Her Century” REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

Y

ou were their hope for the future.

For your elders, your birth represented things they wished would happen but that they’d never know. It was a joy for them to see you come into the world but for you, as in the new book “Ladysitting” by Lorene Cary, it’s harder to see them go.

When it comes to children, “spoiling” is a word that Black adults particularly hate to hear, but that’s what Lorene Cary says she got from her Nana.

Some of Cary’s earliest memories are of Nana’s sun-splashed New Jersey apartment, make-believe play, and being cherished.

Nana didn’t indulge her completely – Cary had

rules to follow – but Nana showered love and paid attention, two things Cary needed most.

Back then, Lorene H. Jackson had been a formidable force, a no-nonsense, feisty and independent, powerful businesswoman who still went to her Philadelphia office well into her nineties. A decade later, the summer she turned 100, a bladder infection set her low and she became frail, sometimes rattled. Because there were complications and family issues, Cary moved Nana into her home, a rectory near the church where Cary’s husband was a minister.

On both sides, it would take some getting-used-to.

The Cary family was a

busy one: there were older children in the household, Cary had founded a growing non-profit to nurture, and there was a congregation to attend to. For her part, Nana could be irascible; she obviously hated being dependent, fretted about her possessions, and she couldn’t be alone for long.

Tensions rose. And then Nana began to seriously decline.

Falls and confusion became all too common.

Nana’s hearing, which hadn’t been good for some time, worsened. And yet, she outlived her allotted hospice time, and her memory remained relatively sharp. She had enough spring in her life to make demands and to keep con-

nections to family and friends.

Still, there was no denying it: Cary’s grandmother was dying…

Open the cover of “Ladysitting,” and you’re immediately yanked into a story with an ending you already know. Get past that initial, irresistible pull, though, and it may feel like a challenge to continue: author Lorene Cary seems to lose focus.

Was that done accidentally, or by design?

Doesn’t matter, because it works to show readers what it’s like to care for someone who’s elderly or terminally ill, while trying to do self-care and maintain some amount of control over the uncontrollable.

readers awake. Frustration comes roaring through, but not so that compassion slips.

Confusion is everywhere in this tale, but it doesn’t forsake compassion. Cary adds careful amounts of family history for clarity, even daring to include occasional humorous anecdotes – not inappropriately, but in enhancement of what is one of the more deftly-written, truthful accounts in this genre.

The key here is patience because this is a tough story to know. That’s especially true for millennials and older GenXers: “Ladysitting” is good, but it could offer a small glimpse into your future.
