The Good News for the COVID-19 Pandemic and New York continues to be that it seems we are on a downward in terms of the numbers infected, number hospitalized and numer of deaths and we are getting closer to reopening.

Some small businesses in central Harlem have reported they have been approved for the PPP Relief Forgivable Loan. Unfortunately, there are many others, rather most, have not gotten any relief after being closed for 10 weeks now.

LEARN HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND OTHERS AT HOME. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF COVID-19?

• The most common symptoms are fever, cough, sore throat and shortness of breath. Other symptoms include feeling achy, loss of taste or smell, headache, and diarrhea.

• Most people with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) will have mild or moderate symptoms and can get better on their own.

WHO IS MOST AT RISK FOR SERIOUS ILLNESS? • People age 50 or older (people age 65 or older are at the highest risk) • People who have other health conditions, such as: Lung disease Kidney disease Asthma Liver disease Heart disease Cancer Obesity A weakened immune system Diabetes

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I GET SICK WITH COVID-19 SYMPTOMS?

If you or someone in your home is sick: • Create physical distance: Do not have visitors.

WHEN CAN I LEAVE MY HOME AFTER BEING SICK? • If you have been sick, stay home until: You are fever-free for three days without Tylenol or other medication and It has been at least seven days since your symptoms started and Your symptoms have improved • Reminder: New York is on PAUSE. This means that even if you have been sick, you should only leave your home for essential work or errands, or to exercise, while staying at least 6 feet from others.

If you are sick with COVID-19 symptoms, assume you have it. When you are sick: • If you have trouble breathing, pain or pressure in your chest, are confused or cannot stay awake, or have bluish lips or face, call 911 immediately.

• Call your doctor if you are age 50 or older or have a health condition that puts you at increased risk, or if you do not feel better after three days.

• Always contact a doctor or go to the hospital if you have severe symptoms of COVID-19 or another serious health issue.

• Do not leave your home except to get necessary medical care or essential food or supplies (if someone cannot get them for you).

• If you must leave your home: Avoid crowded places.

Stay at least 6 feet from others.

Cover your nose and mouth with a bandana, scarf or other face covering.

Wash your hands before you go out, and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer while outside.

• Household members can go out for essential work and needs but should monitor their health closely.

Stay at least 6 feet from others.

Sleep head-to-toe if you share a bed with someone who is sick, or sleep on the couch.

Keep people who are sick separate from those at risk for serious illness.

• Cover up: Cover your nose and mouth with a bandana, scarf or other face covering when you are within 6 feet of others.

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your inner elbow.

• Keep it clean: Throw tissues into the garbage immediately after use.

Wash your hands often with soap for 20 seconds, especially after you cough or sneeze.

Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands.

Frequently clean surfaces you touch, such as doorknobs, light switches, faucets, phones, keys and remote controls.

Wash towels, sheets and clothes at the warmest possible setting with your usual detergent, and dry completely.

Do not share eating utensils with others, and wash them after every use.

Helping Veterans and Active Duty Military Cope With Social Isolation (Statepoint)

in due to the COVID-19 pandemic, kits have been distributed to more than 90 Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers around the country and a large number of military bases, state veteran homes and other locations where the need is great.

“The coronavirus is overwhelming, but being alone in a pandemic crisis can be terrifying and deeply debilitating,”

says Joe McClain, retired Navy captain and Help Heal Veterans CEO. “Our goal is to give our veterans what they need to heal during this time of enforced isolation.”

In a recent survey of vets, 94 percent of those polled who use Heal Vets craft kits said the kits helped them have a more positive outlook on life, and 98 percent said the kits took their mind off

problems.

With many of the nation’s veterans labeled high-risk now in lockdown with little contact from others, (no visitors, no family allowed, no volunteers and limited staff interaction), it is particularly important to address suicide prevention, according to McClain.

“We’re working closely with the VA Suicide Program to start includ-

ing VA-produced suicide prevention awareness and education material with our kits,” he says. “Our concern is that during this time of increased stress from isolation and financial uncertainty, some veterans may be at higher risk of taking their own life. We are hoping to raise awareness and improve access to craft therapy kits to help mitigate that risk.”

s a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of veterans and active duty military personnel are on lockdown, many suffering from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or substance abuse. With the additional challenge of social isolation, finding ways to combat depression, anxiety and loneliness is critical.

r. Maulana Karenga, chair of the Department of Africana Studies at CSU Long Beach, wants the Black community to make sure that physical distancing during the pandemic does not interfere with relationships or establishing networks.

“We’ve got to shop for each other, we have to pick up prescriptions for each other,” Karenga said. “We’ve got to talk; we’ve got to share information, so we don’t have to be afraid unnecessarily.”

Karenga was recently featured on the Carl Nelson Show and conducted a phone conference with Nelson and his radio audience at WOL radio in Washington, D.C. “There’s no real denying of the damage and destruction that this coronavirus has done to our lives,” Karenga said. “We can’t even worship in the same way anymore.”

During the show, Karenga admitted that there is a lot of fear and confusion out in the

world now, and he warned against buying into the conspiracy theories which can pit persons against each other. He also expressed his dismay with the information the government issues to the public.

“They don’t have culturally competent messages for us,” Karenga said, claiming that at least 46 percent of coronavirus victims are Black. “Even though Black people are in the emerging hot zones… Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, New Orleans…we lack the ethnic data.

Who’s tested positive? Who has died? We don’t have any of that.”

Former President Barak Obama agreed, raising the issue at a virtual meeting with mayors, local leaders and members of response teams from around the world.

“When you start looking at

issues of domestic abuse and you start looking at racial disparities that are popping up in your cities, paying attention to that is the kind of leadership I know all of you aspire to,” Obama said. “You have to be intentional about these issues.”

Rep. Karen Bass (CA-37), chair of the Congressional Black Caucus holds frequent town hall teleconferences on various subjects. “Healthcare disparities in our country have been a long-standing issue and concern for the Congressional Black Caucus,” Bass said. “The spread of the coronavirus has compounded these issues, leaving Black people even more vulnerable.

We need to urgently address these disparities with a targeted response to our community.”

“It’s not that [Blacks are] getting infected more often,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci during a recent With House briefing. “It’s that when they do get infected with their underlying medical conditions

— diabetes, hypertension, obesity, asthma – those are the kind of things that wind them up in the ICU and ultimately death.”

Fauci says the pandemic is shining a bright light on the healthcare disparities which have always existed in the country and added that efforts to limit these disparities should resume after this global crisis.

“Early data on deaths show that no group is immune from COVID-19,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti in his recent news briefings.

“We need every community to understand this can affect you. No matter what community you live in or come from, this can affect you.”

“Long-term racial disparities still exist,” Garcetti said.

“The effect it has on communities can be disproportionate.”

“We are the people who survived the holocaust of slavery,” Karenga noted. “We have no business thinking we cannot handle this.”

Listening to the sound of his voice echoing soothing words, seeing kind expressions of care and concern on his face, President Barack Obama revealed again to our country what we had witnessed and now miss so deeply after eight years under his leadership. The commencement addresses, though similar in agenda, were equally presented in an aura of encouragement, understanding

and compassion to engage a generation that deserved to be acknowledged and congratulated for what they have attained thus far. President Obama spoke words of truth through wisdom from his experiences under the calmness of sane leadership, so desperately needed at such a time as this.

Quoting from the speeches would not suffice in capturing what President Obama’s mindset was when he accepted the invitation from J.P. Morgan and LeBron James. ou may think I am a cockeyed optimist always striving to see the positive side of life at first glance. Taking into consideration how we may be imagined by others, the only important aspect of being alive is to be true to how you perceive and know thy self.

To be able to rejoice in the accomplishments of others, to rally support for those who are adventurous enough to believe they can achieve their hopes and dreams, is what I know.

But, if you know me at all, then you have probably experienced a phone call from me so excited, I could not hide it, when I hear about something amazing about to kick off.

Such was the case, Saturday, May 16th when I got the word to attend, virtually that is, two commencement addresses scheduled to broadcast featuring the world’s renowned shining star, President Barack Obama. Surely, when the word went out across the nation and beyond our borders that the former President of the United States would address the people, in this case, the 2020 graduates of Historically Black Colleges

Dr. Julie R. Butler, DVM 1957-2020 Orbituary

It is with profound sadness that we report the passing of Dr. Julie R. Butler, DVM April 4, 2020 due to complications of coronavirus.

After earning her doctorate, Dr. Butler worked at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Brooklyn, NY. She began private practice at the 145th Street Animal Hospital in 1989. For 31 years, her solo veterinary practice was a mainstay of Harlem, providing “Professional Care with a Personal Touch”. For much of that time, she was the only veterinarian in Harlem, striving to provide high quality care to each patient she saw regardless of the

owner’s economic circumstance.

Dr. Butler earned her B.S. from Wellesley College and 1979.

She went on to earn her DVM at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she was the only Black student in her graduating class.

Dr. Butler was a founder of NYSAVE, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing financial assistance to poor New Yorkers with pets in need of emergency care. She also served as a past president of the Veterinary Medical Association of New York City, and was on the Board of Directors for Lutheran Social Services of New York. Dr. Butler was a lifelong supporter of the Harlem School of the Arts, of which both of her children are alumni and she was a co-founding member of South African

Harlem Voices Choir (SAHAVO), a choir composed of a blend of African-American and South African cultures that performed locally and internationally.. She was also a member of the senior choir at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church.

Dr. Butler is survived by her husband, Claude Howard, their son Alex and daughter Zora, her sister, Dr. Sheila Butler, her brothers, Dr. Robert Butler, Reginald and Maurice Butler and many cousins, nephews and nieces, godchildren, friends and mentees.

Dr. Butler had a character that you couldn’t ignore. She was outspoken, humorous and bright.

Always bringing her passions into the workplace. Her creativity and craftiness shone in her felt miniatures that she modeled after some of our patients and her DIY projects within the practice. Her love of music rang as Prince played softly in the background during long surgeries. She made going to work enjoyable and it was an honor to have her as a mentor, teacher and friend.

An eager curiosity and a willingness to improve and experiment were trademarks in her various endeavors. As a veterinarian, she would explore new therapies and constantly add to her repertoire and facilities. She would obtain new equipment, rapidly become

proficient in their use, and retain that proficiency even if infrequently utilized. Consequent of this nature, a wide breadth of surgeries accompanied the numerous cases she took on in her career.

Her versatility did not end with her veterinary practice. As a trained visual artist, she explored various mediums and would try her hand at new techniques without hesitation. Her work would incorporate just as many crafts such as felting and needlework as the traditional mediums found in drawing and painting. A worldwide traveler and an ardent cook, she found solace in the novelty found in diverse cultures and cuisine. An international library of cookbooks filled the shelves of her living room and the Internet was her haven for even more recipes that she would use as templates for her own meals.

She displayed a rare confidence that took comfort in the unknown. She would reference necessary texts, make a game plan, and follow through with the procedure, even if she never did it before. That confidence would never spill into arrogance though and she made sure to always have her ducks in row when it came to her patients. And if a task was more involved than initially expected, she would continue until she was satisfied and the best outcome possible was fulfilled, despite complexity compounded by fatigue.

After a long day, when one would expect her collapse onto her bed, that aforementioned pursuit would reveal hidden reserves. Even after a full schedule of unexpectedly involved cases followed by surgery planned for that day, she would work on a project or freestyle a meal inspired by a YouTube channel for her family.

Dr. Julie R. Butler posthumously honored for 31 years of animal care in Harlem

A graduate of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Butler brings both an ivy league education and over 36 years of experience to clients like Francine Frazier, who was picking up

“It’s nice to see a family business that is black owned, it’s just positive all around, that’s the blessing of being in Harlem.” said Frazier. “I know when she tells me something, it’s the best, I don’t doubt her, I don’t second guess her, I know it’s quality because she’s quality,” said Frazier.

2. How do I know if I have severe asthma? There are several different types of asthma and knowing what kind you have can help in your treatment plan and management of symptoms.

Testing for severe asthma may involve taking a blood sample, analyzing your lung mucus or taking a breath droplet test. If you’ve ever gotten those words in the directions to some business, you know what comes following them: a feeling of being totally, inescapably lost. The feeling of frustration because there were actually two churches. The anger that your GPS app took you somewhere ridiculous.

The thought that, as in “The Address Book” by Deirdre Mask, having a good, strong, easy-to-find address matters.

When was the last time you got a letter in the mail?

wanted to do: send her father a birthday card with a letter from her home in Ireland to his in North Carolina. As she pressed a stamp on the envelope, she idly wondered who got the fee – and that led her to the Universal Postal Union in Switzerland, which decides such things, and to An Address for Everyone, an organization that showed her something surprising: “most households in the world don’t have street addresses.”

That, of course, is not optimal: at the very least, it means difficulty in receiving mail and packages from businesses outside the household’s area. Worse, economic impacts reach far beyond an individu-

al: not having an address could prevent access to financial services, credit, and help from government programs. Studies show, in fact, that the number one request from homeless Americans is not a home but an address.

As for you, well, it’s not just the physical address of your customer that matters in the end. Where you place your workplace is equally important and shouldn’t be left to chance, if you can help it.

Because a land address equals power, the street-number for your building matters and you can thank the Brits for that.

Where you sit on the block makes a difference, for which you can thank Phil-

adelphia’s founders. Your street name matters, especially if you can manage to get your name on the street sign; it can tell others a lot about the racial make-up of your city; and, says Mask, “Street names are, in a way, the perfect propaganda tool.”

Have you ever been told that they name streets after people like you? You might consider that a compliment, after reading “The Address Book.”

That’s because this book is fun, serious enough to be useful to businessfolks who understand that its subject matter matters, but light enough with plenty of geewhiz factor. Who, after all, notices this stuff?

your street address is wacky or borders on the profane (and author Deirdre Mask shows that there are those kinds of addresses around) you might’ve shrugged and went back to business when you moved there.
