The Bronx educator has spent her Spring Break vacation for the past 10 years with the young women at the role model program. Lucresse Tato, an undergraduate at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education at City College, connected to certain themes brought up throughout the week of workshops as well as from her mentors, medical professionals who she met with every morning— Dr. Karen Myrie, Physician Assistant Andrea Smith and Medical Resident Chae Boyd. Themes like “you can’t be what you can’t see” and “finding out your why.” For Tato being an Obstetrician-gynecologist is something she was inspired to do by seeing other black women doctors and because of her passion to address racial disparities such as Black women having a 3-4 times higher rate of pregnancy-related deaths.

sionate storyteller, most recently gaining 4,000 likes on a video on her youtube channel (Lunalulu) about moving into her dorm room freshman year and will shortly be posting a video on her experience at the mentoring program.

Women in 1979 at Spellman College in Atlanta and was brought to City College in Harlem in 1982. It now has coordinators at the following CUNY colleges: City, John Jay, York, Queens, and Medgar Evers. Since the program started it has received sponsorship from Con Edison and Rubenstein Associates, Inc. and from L’Oréal since 1999. rom April 22 to 25 a cohort of 32 college students and 7 high school students participated in the Signature Role Model Program, a mentoring initiative for young women that offers them the chance to shadow professionals in their field of interest and to participate in career-related workshops. The program, in its 40th year, kicked off with a special presentation from Essence Magazine Editor-at-Large Mikki Taylor at the L’Oréal USA headquarters in Hudson Yards.

The week included workshops around topics like ‘How Money Works,’ ‘Dress for Success’ and ‘Putting Social Media to Work for You.’ On the first day, a career panel of professional women shared experiences and wisdom with the students.

Panelist Jane Lee, Director of Talent Management with L’Oréal spoke to the importance of networking and how bringing a curious spirit to personal interactions helped her find mentorship.

All the panelists agreed having a Linked-in profile can open up many doors along the way and each student received a professional headshot for their Linked-in profile from Model/Marathon Runner/Photographer Regina Fleming. Assistant Vice President of Corporate Diversity & Inclusion at L’Oréal Cecilia Nelson-Hurt said Linkedin helped her learn about the culture of the L’Oréal company though connecting with employees via the online networking platform before she was hired.

he Great American Hat Show held on Saturday April 27th at the Watson Hotel on 57th Street was “Spectacular.”

The themes of the scenes of the show set the mood for the styles, ie: “Saving Planet A,” “The Five Queens of Africa,” “Mineral X,” “Fashions of the Brownstone,” “When We were Kings,” “Beautiful Cat People,” and “Afrikon Forever.” It was truly more than a hat show - it was an entertaining array of style, beauty, history, elegance and drama.

The designers of the hats and clothes presented included Princess Jenkins of the Brownstone, Larry Underwood of Underwood NY, Arlinda M and Harriet Rosebud of Rosebud of New York. Ron Caldwell was the show stylist. Tina

Emmy winner A. Curtis Farrow brings 20 Years musical leadership to Gospelfes

cDonald’s Gospelfest 2019 will be held on May 11, 2019 at the Prudential Center in Newark and will honor the life and legacy of Queen Aretha Franklin.

There will be performances by Gospel stars Yolanda Adams, Hezekiah Walker, Shirley Caesar and Fred Hammond, as well as R&B vocalist Tamar Braxton. The annual event will start with a competition at 5:00pm in categories including Soloists, Choirs, Praise Dancers, Gospel Comedians, Gospel Poets and Gospel Rappers, and the concert starts at 7:00pm.

This year marks the 20th that Emmy-award winner A. Curtis Farrow will be producing and directing Gospelfest. The renowned entertainer and respected business owner took time to share

with Harlem News readers how he got involved with the fest and how his faith carries him along his path.

The truth is Farrow wasn’t originally interested in Gospelfest. When he was approached by respected advertising agent Caroline Jones to interview for the show he had already built a repertoire of producing and directing a number of gospel and theatre shows. “I left [the interview] and I said, I don’t

want to do that,” said Farrow.

When he went to his church, New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, one of the elders told him, “Baby, God is trying to bless you.” When he got back to his car and checked his voice messages from the day there was one from Jones encouraging him to take the job with Gospelfest, which became the sign from above he needed to say yes to Jones.

Since then he has stayed committed to the work he does every year. “I’m serious about it, this is not about me, it’s not a game, this is about God,” Farrow said. What Farrow does every year for Gospelfest he calls “kingdom work” and he said one of his proudest moments was being able to bring Aretha Franklin to perform onstage at Gospelfest.

He dreamt of having the Queen of Soul, who

released the top selling gospel album of all time Amazing Grace, at Gospelfest.

“God showed me I had to do it myself, versus going through people,” he said. After getting her number from her agent, Farrow called Franklin and said their conversation “was the start to a beautiful friendship.” Franklin preformed the fest in 2005 and again in 2013. This year singers will be performing songs honoring the legend who passed in 2018.

Under Farrow’s leadership Gospelfest has invited secular singers to demonstrate how many who “make it” had musical training in the church. Stars like Beyoncé and this year’s Gospelfest performer Tamara Braxton are among these songstresses. “Many of the women and men in the entertainment business, their foundation is

the church,” commented Farrow.

His involvement in the “homecoming” of Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston, who also attended New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, is another example of Farrow’s contributions of musical talent. While many have asked him what was the difference between being a part of these two homecomings, Farrow likes to point to what they had in common: “They both were church girls, they were super talented and they were worldwide names. At the end both families brought them back to the church.”

Farrow also spends his time as CEO of Irving Street Rep., Inc. a company offering marketing, event planning and public relations services operating out of Newark.

Farrow described the compa-

ny as a spiritual community that has made prayer an important part of their business.

“We get in every morning and pray and we pray at the end of the day, We are truly a company that begins with God and ends our day with God,” said Farrow.

Wakanda’s Return…and Reckoning

Timing is everything.

Last week, movie goers rekindled their love affair with Wakanda’s warriors as they returned to the big screen in the epic (and box office record setting) Avengers: Endgame.

So it’s great timing that a new book has arrived to give people additional insight about the mythical African nation and the first black superhero.

The book, Black Panther: Paradigm Shift or Not? A Collection of Reviews and Essays on a Blockbuster Film, features submissions by academics, activists,

journalists, and comic book experts writing opinions regarding the king (T’Challa, the Black Panther), his antagonist (Erik Killmonger), the Dora Milaje and all things Wakandan. Its contributing authors include the creator of Kwanzaa, Maulana Karenga; noted academic, Jelani Cobb; Black Panther Party co-founder, Bobby Seale; political analyst, Christina Greer; Renaissance Man, Greg Tate, and me, L.A. n honor of Mother’s Day (and in tribute to the rest of you who take better care of everyone else, but yourself), I have a few prescriptions for pampering. For those of you reading this who want to give your mom a gift, there are also a few ideas to inspire you.

Moms, indulge yourself! On Mother’s Day you will be presented with gifts from family and friends in honor of your role as “the mommy.” Each gift will be

well intended and appreciated so be thankful. However there are a few things that only you can do for yourself and why not take the opportunity to “cut loose” for bit? The prescription is a simple one: Do not be afraid to buy yourself a gift. You deserve it, and besides, it will probably be the only gift guaranteed to be the one you wanted!

wants! Don’t just give her what you feel she needs, give her what she wants and can really use and appreciate.

Encourage mom to put herself first for a change. Suggest that she treat herself to something special —in addition to whatever it is you give her.

Her cooking may be great, but if she has to cook on Mother’s Day . . . shame on you!

Dads, she might not be your mother, but she gave birth to your children. Your children take their cues from you, so take them with you to select cards and gifts for their mom and yours! You’ll get your turn next month.

Pamper, indulge, respect and appreciate your mom.

Remember, pampering isn’t just about leisure, it’s about living well—and living well is about doing what makes you happy or makes another happy. Think about it.

ater stains and tattered edges.

It was a shame that that happened to the picture you found, though those wounds give it dignity. You have no idea who’s in the snapshot; you just know that someone wanted to remember a moment in time – or, as in the new book “Girl in Black and White” by Jessie Morgan-Owens, someone wanted to spark change.

If you didn’t know the whole story behind the daguerreotype, you would think it was just an image of a charming, anonymous little girl, circa 1855.

And you’d be half right.

Its story starts in 1808

when Virginia widow Conney Cornwell dealt with a thorny issue: her fifteen-year-old daughter, Kitty, became pregnant by one of Conney’s slaves and, ignoring possible ruination of the family’s reputation, Conney kept the baby they named John.

Though he was technically free due to matrilineal laws, John was raised in the slave quarters by Conney’s slave, “Prue,” until he was sixteen.

In 1825, when Conney fell ill, she did something that she hoped would ultimately protect Prue from enduring the heartbreak of separation from family: Conney left Prue to John in her will. Also included were Prue’s children and

future grandchildren – and there would be many, most fathered by white men of power.

The problem was that John’s whereabouts were unknown when Conney died, and there was a battle for her estate; in the meantime, Prue gave birth to more children, as did her children. Through complicated circumstances, one of them, Prue’s very lightskinned granddaughter, eventually caught the eye of anti-slavery Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner, who knew that white audiences would be interested in her story and the horrors that might befall her as a black child who looked white. He wanted to show her to

his abolitionist supporters and to opponents.

And so Sumner arranged a portrait session with a little girl called Mary…

Much as you’ll be interested in Mary’s story, too, “Girl in Black and White” may be a challenging way to get it.

While it’s good that a major chunk of the first part of this book is a Genesis-like account of begetting and ancestry, that soon devolves into court cases and courtroom wranglings that may be hard to follow for all but the most legal-minded readers. Author Jessie Morgan-Owens valiantly offers some help with this and she includes plenty of fascinating side-stories on mid-1800s cul-

there’s still a lot to take in, especially if you’re not prepared for it.

Take that as fair warning because, despite its depth, you’ll have a hard time tearing yourself away from the small stories Morgan-Owens offers inside the larger account: tales of everyday life, helpful celebrities, and Mary’s final days in what may have been a “’Boston Marriage.’”

Perhaps the best advice is to give yourself plenty of time to digest and plenty of room to backpage while reading “Girl in Black and White.” Do that, and you’ll be fine; without space to contemplate, though, it may leave your brain a little tattered.
