March is Women History Month. During this month we will highlight women and their accomplishments that impact our communities and the world.

In this issue we salute “Women of Courage.” These are women who were doing in business 20 years or more in upper Manhattan. Since I have been doing business in Harlem for more than 24 years I can tell you that maintaining a business in Harlem has had it’s years of struggle for small business owners. However, the women in business have supported each other, the community has been consistent in supporting us and we continue to “stand.” Congratulations to the 21 women whom we will honor at our March 21 event promoting “Uptown Women Business Owners.” (see pages 11-13) In our next issue we will present the women business owners who will attend our March 21 event. Bronx Based Food and Social Justice Groups Form Bronx Canasta

N

ew Bronx food collective wins a USDA award to make salad dressing and marinade.

A collaboration of Bronx-based food and social justice groups has formed the Bronx Canasta, an innovative food production and economic empowerment program.

The Bronx Canasta aims to build self-reliance of Bronx communities to grow their own food and create, market, and distribute value-added products. To support these efforts, The Bronx Canasta secured four years of funding through a USDA Community Food Projects Competitive Grant.

Now we are looking the first value-added product – a Bronx salad dressing and marinade recipe.

The Bronx Canasta is a partnership of groups already serving the Bronx in a variety of capacities: The Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center, Bronx Green-Up of The New York

Botanical Garden, International Rescue Committee, Morris Campus Educational Farm, Friends of Brook Park, La Familia Verde Community Garden Coalition, and Small Axe Peppers. These organizations are all working closely together to create and implement innovative food and farming opportunities for Bronx residents.

The recipe’s ingredients will be grown in the Boogie Down Bronx. Urban farms and community gardens around our borough will plant and harvest the freshest ingredients for the salad dressing and marinade.

Bronx community gardens have already proven the viability of commercial production by growing over two tons of serrano peppers used to make The Bronx Hot Sauce™. This community effort generated $15,000 that has been reinvested into participating Bronx community gardens.

The gardens combining their efforts to create a product that promotes a healthy lifestyle from plants grown right here is exciting,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “I encourage all New Yorkers with an epicurean flair to take part in this recipe contest and bring the flavor of Bronx to their own special cuisine.”

RUBEN SINGS LUTHER ALWAYS & FOREVER: An Evening of Luther Vandross

Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, ironically alongside his idol Vandross, who ultimately won the category. Studdard’s next release, the gospel album I Need an Angel (2004), entered the gospel charts at #1, went Gold, won the Billboard Gospel Music Awards for both Artist and Album, and was nominated for the BET Best Gospel Artist Award. During the next decade, Studdard toured and released three more hit albums that included the top selling singles “Change Me“, “Make Ya Feel Beautiful”, “Love Him Like I Do”, “Together”, and “Don’t Make ‘Em Like U No More”. In 2008/2009, he joined the revival tour of Ain’t Misbehavin’ starring as Fats Waller, and the well-received production was honored with a Grammy nomination for its soundtrack recording. He made his Broadway debut in December 2018, when he reunited with Clay Aiken for “Ruben & Clay’s First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show”.

RUBEN STUDDARD, the Grammy-nominated American R&B, pop, and gospel singer and actor was born in Frankfurt, Germany while his father was stationed in the U.S. Army. As a young child, his family moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he grew up singing gospel in church. After attending Alabama A&M University on a football scholarship, he graduated with a degree in music and began working in local clubs. Studdard’s big break came in 2003, when he was accepted as a contestant on the second season of the national television show American Idol.

Impressing audiences with his large voice, warm stage presence, and easy confidence, he was given the nickname “Velvet Teddy Bear” by guest judge Gladys Knight. In a nod to his hero, Luther Vandross, he performed a cover of the Leon Russell/Bonnie Bramlett song “Superstar”, which had been a R&B hit for Vandross. ehman Center for the Performing Arts and Goya Foods present the return of GRUPO NICHE for a dazzling concert on Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 at 8pm. One of the world’s most popular Salsa groups, Grupo Niche is known for both uptempo and vigorous dance music as well as slower-paced salsa romántica numbers.

Grupo Niche is currently recording their latest album at the “Rolo’s Studio” in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, in the analog format for an authentic salsa sound experience. This new work is under the musical direction of Maestro José Aguirre, who is overseeing every smallest detail in keeping with

This concert continues the completion of the first phase of renovations at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. Indoor Exercises to Chase Away the Winter Blues

However, it can be hard to stay motivated and keep up with exercise during these last few weeks of winter and into spring when the weather is still suboptimal outside. The solution? Find indoor, year-round activities that you love that can elevate your heart rate and get your muscles working.

Better yet, create your own space for health and wellness.

Just recently, that’s exactly what Harlem resident Camille Giordano did. She opened The Harlem Yoga

Club on the ground floor at 226 Lenox Avenue in between 121st and 122nd Streets.

Ms. Giordano came up with the concept of The Harlem Yoga Club after years of teaching classes across all the boroughs.

She was traveling as far as Brooklyn to teach when finally, she said, “I realized that I wanted to bring things that I am passionate about - yoga, Pilates, herbal medicine, and wellness - to the community I love and live in.”

While yoga offers many physical benefits like strengthening and toning muscles and increased flexibility, the benefits don’t end there. Ms. Giordano says, “My students achieve the benefit of simultaneous physical and mental changes as we progress

through the classes. Weight loss, flexibility, physical strength, improved balance, and dexterity are inextricably connected with the mental benefits, improved concentration, patience, ability to sleep, and overall mindfulness.”

Ms. Giordano exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit of Harlem women who have turned their passion into a local business with health benefits for our community.

Of course, staying active doesn’t require opening your own exercise boutique. But in case it does interest you, the future is bright. “The health and wellness industries are growing exponentially - our sedentary and workaholic culture has finally had enough it seems,” says Ms.

When it can be especially difficult to stick to your exercise goals through the winter, Ms. Rochester advises, “book your classes in advance, put them on your schedule and hold yourself accountable by not cancelling.”

mass mentality that yearns to be a member of an elite class of “acknowledgers.”

What do “they” have that “we” don’t? In a word: Confidence. And that, my friends is why I believe that confidence qualifies as the ultimate accessory!

There is a tendency to think that if we have all the right accoutrements (think fashionable accessories like shoes, handbags, jewelry and the like, by

In its most useful form it has to be earned by successfully surviving the many challenges that life presents and using the lessons learned to strengthen your core. What you are wearing won’t make a difference in the way you are perceived by others if you feel insecure underneath it all.

Confidence is a funny thing. Depending upon your experience it may come and go, or be gained or lost and it is fragile.

Your confidence may be shaken by circumstances beyond your control or bolstered by a single event. Confidence is about

trusting and having faith in you.

So, how do you become more confident? That’s a million dollar question!

No one can teach you to be more confident, it is something that only you can develop and nurture within. There are people who seem to have vast reservoirs of confidence that they can count on to bolster them in trying situations; then there are those who can’t muster it up in any situation.

To become a more confident person, you must first identify the source of your insecurity and then challenge yourself to take on your reluctance to overcome your fear of succeeding to overcome it!

Yep, that was a mouthful, but think about it for a few moments. Imagine what

wearing a confident attitude will do for you in life and in the way you look to the world. Becoming a more confident person will take time and constant nurturing to maintain it; but once you have it, it’s yours!

As individuals, each of us is remarkable in our own right. “They“ don’t really have anything that you can’t have as well . . .

Instead of choosing to surround yourself with and hiding behind or wearing status symbols; step out wearing the one accessory that you can always count on to make you look good . . . Confidence. Think about it. See you next week.

The seven-day holistic wellness strategic marketing initiative has two main objectives the first is to provide a marketing platform for holistic wellness practitioners, businesses and organizations to collectively advertise and promote their services.
