Bronx Museum – Benching with Kids, Featuring Futura

by Howard Giske

On Saturday, March 7 th , children and adults got to enjoy making graffiti type drawings on pre-made pictures of subway cars. This was part of the Bronx Museum exhibit on Henry Chalfant, who made numerous pictures and documentation of the subway graffiti scene in New York City from about 1977 to 1987. Special guest was Futura 2000, trade name of a graffiti artist who was active then.

Futura now has a design shop / brand name of Futura Laboratories, and has been in design projects Futura 2000 (in cap) works with child. Graffiti subway car on display. Family program.

with BMW autos. His company was at first a clothing design company in 1997. This year, BMW produced 500 of his “art car” design, which is all black, but has graffiti-like white traces and watermarks. For his designs, check out Instagram pages @futura2000 and @futuralaboratories, and work with Louis Vuitton menswear at www.icnclst. com . A bunch of old-time graffiti artists and fans attended the event and gave Futura high-fives. Futura showed children how to make designs out the letters of their names in many colors of the markers on the table. Similar designs were on a skateboard that one of the old fans brought. Hip hop music, at a low volume, was playing in the background.

Lady K Fever was helping the children doing their drawings. She is a longtime educator at the Bronx Museum and also participated in graffiti years ago. The whole show, from the Henry Chalfant exhibition to the work with Futura 2000 was a blast from the past. Also helping guide the event was Ms Shilei, who is an assistant of Futura Labs. Forty years ago there was a huge level of graffiti on subway cars and buildings, but in the midst of the real estate boom, much of this has disappeared. The Bronx, known for its problems in the 1970s and 1980s, had its graffiti and hip hop music culture became the basis for an international phenomenon. Henry Chalfant documented the graffiti scene with pictures and film. His book is “Spray Can Art” by Henry Chalfant and Jim Prigoff. His film “Style Wars” also with Tony Silver, has become a favorite documentary about the period.
