March is Women History Month!

Throughout the month of March we will feature women who have made a difference in our community. This week we present Dr. Marcella Maxwell who has inspired and kept seniors informed before and during the Pandemic. That is right being over 90 did not stop Maxwell from figuring out how to continue to inform seniors via Zoom. (see page 3) No more excuses. The vaccines are on the way. Last report from the president was there may be more vaccines available than used in May 2021. I have had my two shots of Pfizer. I do feel that I am protected, but I continue to wear my mask, stay out of situations with crowds indoors and wash my hands often as instructed. I lost my first cousin to COVID last week, so I know it is still taking lives. Also, the good news this past weekend is that the Senate finally passed the $1.9 Trillion relief package. This will help with the vaccine, as well as help many financially. (see page 12) Remember to continue to shop with local businesses.

When you shop with local small businesses it is more likely that money will continue to circulate within your community. Many of our small business owners are raising their family in the community.

hen I think of someone who epitomizes what being a seasoned citizen should look like, the first name that pops up is Dr. Marcella Maxwell. Age is a chronological number of a life journey, but it cannot

An actively productive life has led to such a time as this when she is sharing her insight, knowledge and experience to light the way for seniors to grow gracefully in mind, body and spirit.

Through educational seminars, workshops and conferences that provide indepth information from speciaists in numerous fields, Dr. Maxwell opens the door for seniors to garner what they need to know from those in the know. She has a plan and a purpose that is the basis of all she offers – Knowledge is Power!

Dr. Maxwell received a master’s degree in elementary education from Long Island University and her doctorate in education from Fordham University.

The new normal of virtual presentation has come upon us but has not stifled Dr. Maxwell’s determination to keep seniors informed. She has zoomed into the Webinar arena with three successful sessions, Getting Here to There During COVID (Revisit Access-A-Ride); How to Age Successfully during COVID-19, and Emerging Perspectives on the COVID Pandemic (Vaccines).

It has been a personal pleasure for me to cover the works of Dr. Maxwell for Harlem Community News.

I have no doubt there is more information gathering taking place right now and partnerships in place for scheduling. The aim is clear and calculated to keep seniors aware and able to maneuver through the changes that have already become our new normal.

God bless you mightily, Marcella Maxwell for your caring and sharing.

Women’s History Month Is the Right Time to Raise the Minimum Wage

The federal minimum wage has not budged for more than a decade. But the cost of living keeps rising. So, low-income people fall further and further behind. Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would lift millions of working people out of poverty. This is especially true for families headed by women, especially Black women, who are disproportionately clustered in minimum-wage jobs.

It would make a big dent in the income and wealth gaps that make Black Americans poorer and their families more vulnerable. And it would help right something that is seriously wrong with our economy, which keeps pushing a greater share of the country’s overall wealth to the tiny percentage of the most ridiculously rich people at the very top.

This is a moral question as well as an economic one.

If the minimum wage had kept up with the rise in workers’ productivity over the years,

it would now be closer to $25 an hour. But it didn’t.

In other words, as a society, we have been effectively stealing from the people who already have the least.

So this is about justice. And it is specifically about racial justice.

According to congressional testimony from the Economic Policy Institute last month, “Due to the impacts of structural racism and sexism, women and Black and Hispanic men are concentrated in low-wage jobs” and would greatly benefit from a higher minimum wage.

A higher percentage of Black women are full-time minimum wage workers than any other racial group. More than one-third of Black women have

been in frontline jobs during the pandemic, where they are still paid less than white men.

This is about the health of our children and families.

About 80 percent of Black women are sole, primary, or co-breadwinners for their households. Bringing home a few thousand more dollars per year could be transformative for low-income families.

When he was campaigning, President Joe Biden told voters that he supported a $15 minimum wage. House Democrats included it in their most recent COVID relief bill. But because of an interpretation of Senate rules, the minimum wage may not be included in the final bill.

That cannot be the final word. The administration must put its weight behind the Raise the Wage Act of 2021, which would get us to a $15 minimum by 2025.

For congressional Democrats and the Biden-Harris administration, fighting for a $15 minimum wage is a place where moral obligation and political interests intersect.

And they are in the White House with a Senate majority because Black women organized and turned out the vote.

Rev. William Barber recently reminded us that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. called for a $2 an hour minimum wage almost 60 years ago. That would be over $15 today if it kept up with inflation.

King talked about racial equality as an unfulfilled promise from the nation’s Founding Fathers. Democrats cannot let a living wage remain an unfulfilled promise to Black Americans.

Home Buying in Harlem Be Prepared to Buy Now Rev. Dr. Charles Butler

ome market values have continued to rise at an astronomical rate over the past few years. These prices have made many prospective first-time home buyers have expressed their discouragement over the lack of available affordable housing in Harlem. They are ready to abandon their dream of becoming a homeowner because the prices are too high, and the entire home buying process is too stressful.

I have oftentimes stated during my workshops the number of unexpected obstacles and the many difficult challenges that confront prospective home buyers make the home buying process extremely difficult to complete. The statistical data points out that less than 10% of those wanting to buy a home will be able to successfully complete the process. Plus, because prices are higher you will need a higher amount of money saved for the down payment and closing costs, which will extend the entire process in some cases by an additional 2-3 years.

However, if you develop and execute a sound plan. Follow the steps taught in the home buying seminar. Remain focused throughout the process. You can achieve your dream of becom-

ing a homeowner. Remember a dream delayed is not a dream denied.

Here are some suggestions to assist you: (1) Be ready when an opportunity becomes available.

You must have your money saved. Create a monthly household budget. This will help you identify and eliminate all wasteful spending. Set an aggressive savings monthly savings goal and push yourself to save that amount every month.

(2) Get a pre-approval from your lender. You will have an advantage on competing buyers if you already have a pre-approval.

Real estate agents will know you are serious about completing the process. Also, assemble the other members of your home buying team early in the process.

estate attorney, insurance agent and home inspector.

(3) Maintain a healthy credit score. Aim for having your score over 700. Use your credit wisely.

Keep your outstanding balance below 30% of the maximum limits. Remember lenders want to see 24 months clean credit history with at least 3-4 active accounts. Some lenders will use non-traditional credit such as rent receipts, utility bills etc.

(4) Expand your search. If you are not finding available affordable properties within the Harlem community, you may need to consider looking into other boroughs. Continue to focus on properties in Harlem just in case something within your price range becomes available.

ernon Jordan, the former National Urban League president and civil rights leader, has died at 85.

Vickee Jordan Adams, the icon’s daughter, confirmed his death on Tuesday.

“My father passed away last night at around 10 p.m. surrounded by loved ones, his wife and daughter, by his side,” Adams noted in a statement.

NAACP President Derrick Johnson said the world lost an influential figure in the fight for civil rights and American politics.

“An icon to the world and a lifelong friend to the NAACP, his contribution to moving our society toward justice is unparalleled,” Johnson declared.

“In 2001, Jordan received the NAACP’s Spingarn Medal for a lifetime of social justice activism. His exemplary life will

shine as a guiding light for all that seek truth and justice for all people.”

Added Congressional Black Caucus Chair Karen Bass (D-Calif.): “For decades, Mr. Jordan fought for the advancement of civil rights in this country. His contributions – first challenging segregation and discrimination as an activist in the 1960s and later continuing the fight in the leadership of the NAACP, the United Negro College Fund and then as President of the National Urban League – benefited us all.”

The congresswoman continued: As Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, I had the absolute humbled honor of meeting with Mr. Jordan multiple times to discuss the challenges of our time, but also our hope and optimism for the future. While Mr. Jordan is no longer with us, we

continue this fight surrounded by thousands inspired by his work and his leadership. My thoughts are with the family of Mr. Jordan and the many friends that join me in mourning his loss.”

A lawyer and Washington power broker, Jordan was born in Atlanta on August 15, 1935.

He attended the DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he was the only African American student in his class.

According to his biography posted by The HistoryMakers, Jordan participated in the student senate at DePauw and won state-

wide honors in speaking competitions.

He played basketball and graduated in 1957.

In 1960, he earned a J.D. from the Howard University School of Law. Jordan returned to Atlanta, starting his legal career working with the civil rights movement.

“In 1961, he helped organize the integration of the University of Georgia and personally escorted student Charlayne Hunter through a hostile White crowd,” The HistoryMakers noted.

They continued: “Over the next ten years, Jor-

dan held various positions as a civil rights advocate. He served as the Georgia field secretary for the NAACP, director of the Voter Education Project for the Southern Regional Council, head of the United Negro College Fund, and as a delegate to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s White House Conference on Civil Rights.”

In 1971, Jordan was appointed president and CEO of the National Urban League, spearheading the organization’s growth.

On May 29, 1980, a White supremacist attempted to kill Jordan.

After a successful recovery, in 1981, Jordan resigned from the National Urban League to work as legal counsel with the Washington, D.C. office of Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer, and Feld.

His active practice includes corporate, legislative, and international clients, researchers at the HistoryMakers noted.

Jordan’s close friend is former President Bill Clinton, and during Clinton’s presidency, Jordan became one of Washington’s most influential power brokers, the researchers noted.

He also was a partner in the investment firm of Lazard Frere & Company in New York.

In 2001, Jordan published his autobiography, “Vernon Can Read!,” and authored a weekly newspaper column syndicated to more than 300 newspapers and served as a frequent television guest and commentator.

“Mourning the passage of my friend, the extraordinary Vernon Jordan,” Stacey Abrams posted on Twitter.

“He battled the demons of voter suppression and racial degradation, winning more than he lost. He brought others with him.

And left a map so more could find their way. Love to his family. Travel on with God’s grace.”

Schumer (D-N.Y.) declared just prior to the vote that “we’re not going to make the same mistake we made after the last economic downtown, when Congress did too little to help the nation rebound, locking us into a long, slow, painful recovery. We are not going to be timid in the face of big challenges.”

“He put together a great plan. It was just right,” the Senator remarked.

“It was strong and deep, but also very popular.”

The vote was the first significant test of the Biden Presidency.

It served as a litmus test of how united Democrats would be after four years of having debilitating Donald Trumpled legislation rammed through a favorable Senate.

During the four years of Republican control, a host of Democrat-proposed bills stalled in the upper chamber in what became known as former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s graveyard.

Sen. Manchin, who has discovered new and swing-vote power, has wielded it mightily, forcing changes to the bill that was passed by the House a week earlier.

The West Virginia moderate objected to the president’s and other Democrats who fought to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

That portion of the bill was removed to facilitate the legislation getting through the reconciliation process. Sen. Manchin held up the vote for hours wanting – and receiving – a change from $400 to $300 to the federal unemployment insurance addition to the bill.

Ultimately, the bill passed along party lines 50-49 – one Republican Senator was absent, and therefore, Democrats didn’t need Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote.

The bill still must be returned to the House for final approval before it heads to President Biden’s desk for signature.

Once the bill becomes law, it’s believed that the IRS would quickly begin sending out a new round of stimulus payments.

Single tax filers making $75,000 or less would receive $1,400, while married couples who file jointly and make less than $150,000 would receive $2,800.

Families will also receive $1,400 per child, and adult children claimed as dependents would also receive $1,400.

Unlike previous stimulus payments, single tax filers making at least $80,000, or couples earning more than $160,000,

will not receive a check.

It’s also important to know that the IRS will determine eligibility based on either a 2019 or 2020 tax return.

If you have not filed your 2020 taxes, the government will use 2019 income.

Individuals who may have lost their jobs or whose incomes decreased in 2020 should file as soon as possible.

Otherwise, the IRS will use your 2019 income.

Like the previous stimulus, you are not required to pay taxes on the payments, and those owing child support or student debt to the federal government will be protected from garnishment.

However, lawmakers did not make provisions to protect anyone from garnishment who might have private debt.

The bill allows for the first $10,200 of unemployment payments tax-free, and those who receive food stamps will see a 15 percent increase

in those benefits through September.

Families whose children’s schools have remained closed are also in line to receive EBT benefits through the summer.

The legislation sends about $20 billion to state and local governments to help low-income households cover back rent and utility bills.

It also contains a provision that allows families with minor children to claim a larger tax credit this year.

Those who qualify would receive a child tax credit of $3,600 for each child under six.

Families will also receive $3,000 for each under age 18, up from the current credit of up to $2,000 per child under age 17.

The American Rescue Plan also provides $15 billion to the Emergency Injury Disaster Loan Program, which provides long-term, low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration.

Severely impacted small businesses with fewer than 10 workers will be given priority for some of the money.

Additionally, more people will qualify for higher premium subsidies through the Affordable Care Act. “Today’s passage of bold relief legislation is exactly what Georgians had in mind when they sent me to the Senate to help our state recover from the devastation of this once-in-a-century pandemic and corresponding economic downturn,” stated Sen. Raphael Warnock (DGa.).

“For months, families and communities across the nation have been waiting for the substantive federal assistance they need to pay their rent, buy food and medicine, safely reopen all of our schools and keep essential workers on the job – and because of Georgia, that help is finally just around the corner.”

President Biden Applauds New Johnson & Johnson Vaccine A

fter a rigorous, open, and objective scientific review process, President Joe Biden proclaimed from the White House that the Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for a third safe and effective vaccine to help defeat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government authorized using the new Janssen COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson on Friday, Feb. 26.

“This is exciting news

for all Americans and an encouraging development in our efforts to bring an end to the crisis,” President Biden exclaimed over the weekend.

“We know that the more people get vaccinated, the faster we will overcome the virus, get back to our friends and loved ones, and get our economy back on track,” he added.

The latest vaccine accompanies those already available from Pfizer and Moderna. While the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines

require two shots, just one dose is needed for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The FDA authorized use for those 18 and older and declared that the vaccine does not require freezing.

Approximately 4 million doses are earmarked for distribution this week, with another 16 million by the end of the month and 80 million by July 1.

Reportedly, about 50 million Americans have already been vaccinated, and President Biden said efforts have increased to ensure that vaccines are

available to everyone.

“This – is another milestone toward an end to the pandemic,” CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky stated in a news release.

President Biden thanked “the brilliance of our scientists, the resilience of our people, and the eagerness of Americans in every community to protect themselves and their loved ones by getting vaccinated, and we are moving in the right direction.”

The President noted that he looks forward to updating the American people on progress this

week.

“But I want to be clear: this fight is far from over.

Though we celebrate today’s news, I urge all Americans — keep washing your hands, stay socially distanced, and keep wearing masks,” the President announced.

More than 28.6 million Americans have contracted the novel coronavirus, and approximately 513,000 have died.

“As I have said many times, things are still likely to get worse again as new variants spread, and the current improvement could reverse. My

I believe this list of outstanding female leaders should not only be an inspiration for young women, but it should be

a wake-up call to many men in this country that feel that women are not as capable as males to govern a country. The list also shows how much catching up America must do regarding male chauvinistic attitudes towards female leadership in the workplace and in government. An attitude which seems to be slowly changing.

As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, we must remember the history of Female leadership can be traced as far back as early Kemet (Egypt) when Queen Hatshepsut 1479 to 1458 BC. was the lonest reigni ng female Pharaoh in history and the most powerful female ruler in the world at that time.

During her reign Hatshepsut created the

concept of Sacred Commerce, business practices that used spirituality as a foundation for business transactions; People, Planet, Profit and Spirituality was it’s code. A merchant priesthood was developed to educate merchants through out Kemet and beyond. This was a golden period for the country.

The Sacred Commerce concept is still with us I have the People, Planet, Profit and Spirituality code on the back of my Onuwon Wellness Group business cards. Like Black History Month we should not need a Women’s History Month to remind us of the many contributions that Black people and women make to improve the quality of life in our society every day.

SUMC was founded in 1881 as a mission and grew to become a separate church in 1908. By 1923 its congregation had grew to over 600 at which time they purchased and moved to its present location. SUMC has been home to many of Harlem’s cultural and intellectual elite, such as singer Marian Anderson and poet Countee Cullen. The Reverend Dr. Marvin Anthony Moss is the church’s current pastor since 2014.

SUMC Hunger Relief ministry also serves as a food bank and they give out groceries starting at 10 am every Friday that give away bags of meat, fruit, produce, dairy, eggs, orange juice and naturally can goods too. Sister Bitha Alexander relocated out of NY some years ago, however,

I had no prior grant writing experience. I just had a lot of time on my hands after I left work as a Project Manager for Verizon until 2010 and church leaders gave me their blessings. This one steps farther back in time to look at our foremothers’ audacious actions and brings us up to modern times, touching upon all aspects of life: all-female militaries, abolitionists and freedom fighters, women on and off the Silver Screen and behind the camera, leaders, communicators, and a host of women who stood up against the patriarchy at many points throughout history. This book is humorous at times, but it also dives into Serious Territory with tales that will make readers gasp and other anecdotes that are as outrageous as they are enraging.

It’s the kind of book you’ll want to share with your older teen, especially if that teen is a budding feminist. It’s also the kind of book that will lead you to search for more information.

And that’s the beauty of a Month like this: there’s always more to learn, always more women to appreciate for their rebellion and their revolutionary actions. Pick up these three books to start. You’ll love them 100 percent.
