oreen Clark-Smith was born in Atlantic City, NJ on September 17, 1930 to Lucille Minnie and William Edward Clark. Along with her sister Eileen Grevenberg, her family relocated to Sugar Hill. She moved to Harlem in her early twenties, where she became a vital member of the Black community.

Malcolm X and Rev. Martin Luther King. She worked with many Harlem community activists such as Livingston Wingate, George Broadfield, Charles Kenyatta, Ennis Francis, Bernice Bolar, Vivian Waller, and Hermena Rowe.

In the early 60s, Ms. ClarkSmith worked on petitioning for African independence movements at the United Nations and also organized demonstrations forcing the Board of Education to rename Harlem public schools after African Americans.

Aside from her volunteer activities, she worked for Haryou Act, the NY Urban League, Community School District 6 in Washington Heights and at a NYS training program for nurse’s aides at Westchester Community College. Before she retired, Ms. Clark-Smith served under Governors Mario Cuomo and George Pataki as a Public Information Officer for the NYS Division of Housing

and Community Renewal.

Ms. Clark-Smith received her degree in Urban Planning from Marymount College. She served three terms as chairperson of Community Board 10 and was an active board member working tirelessly for the advancement of Black people - particularly in the areas of ed-

ucation, housing and economic development. She is survived by her three children, Regina Lynn Smith, Dr. Donna Marie Smith and Roger Clark Smith; five grandchildren, Christina Celuzza, Safia Smith, Samantha Chmely, George Smith and Clark Smith; and three great grandchildren.

any homeowners spend time and money perfecting curb appeal, but forget to make it shine at night. Experts say a welllit home exterior and surrounding landscape is both beautiful and functional.

Light layering uses three layers of light: ambient, task and accent lighting.

Begin by selecting ambient lighting that provides a comfortable level of brightness. Wash the home’s exterior with light, using a combination of downlights and uplights to cast a warm, gentle glow on outdoor living spaces while providing indirect lighting to entryways.

Next, select task lighting to add focused illumination that makes entrances and pathways visible

t’s not ordinary. But certainly not extraordinary.

Jordan Peele’s follow-up to the box-office-smash Get Out doesn’t expand the boundaries of the horror genre like its predecessor or A Quiet Placedid. It’s almost a retreat into norms that bring to mind humorous horror flicks like Scary Movie, zombie thrillers akin to Dawn of the Deadand over-produced shockers likeThe Shining. Remember the small, indie feel of Get Out? It’s gone. Vanished like a ghost.

The Wilsons, an upper-middle-class family in Northern California, have just settled into their lakeside vacation home. They have arrived, physically and symbolically.

Thirtysomething-year-old dad, Gabe

(Winston Duke, Black Panther), his tween daughter Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph) and young son Jason (Evan Alex) all want to go to Santa Cruz Beach. It’s got sand, sea, a boardwalk and an amusement park. What’s not to like?

Mom, Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o, Twelve Years a Slave), is dead set against the visit. The thought brings back debilitating PTSD. Back in 1986, when she was a kid (Madison Curry) her parents (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Anna Diop) brought her to that same amusement park. She wandered off, got lost in an arcade called Vision Quest, and by the time they found her she was traumatized. So distressed, she couldn’t speak and the couple sought therapy for her.

For easy-to-please horror genre fans, who don’t ask much from creepy movies, there are enough frights and shocks to satiate: Mirror-image intruders (aka The Tethered), scissors stabbing bodies, blunt force trauma, bodies falling off balconies, boating accidents, heads getting whacked with golf clubs…

There are an abundance of thrills. The Wilson family is likable, modern, hip, African American and unapologetically class-conscious. The setting

For discerning fans with a more sophisticated palate, Peele’s script is using the doppelganger monsters as a metaphor. They represent the people left behind in the shadows, those who don’t get a chance at the good life. The eerie folks from the netherworld who look like the protagonists become a weird head game that is an effective device, initially. Credit Peele for a very creative and three-dimensional premise. The problem with his ambitious blueprint is that some viewers won’t understand what he’s after.

all-American as the family on TV’s Blackish, minus the biting humor. Racial issues are not brought up, it’s not that kind of party. Lupita Nyong’o is a vision as the two moms.

he New York Urban League celebrated its 54th annual Frederick Douglass Awards on Tuesday, May 15th at Pier Sixty in Manhattan. Focusing on the achievements of prominent New Yorkers in their respective industries, the Urban League has selected an esteemed group of honorees to award for their service to the community and advancement of their culture. The event was made possible through the support of Abolitionist sponsors: Forbes8, Malecon Productions, Moet Hennessy USA, The National Basketball Association, Proskauer, Uber and UPS. This year, NYUL celebrated three honorees who embody our commitment to social change and equality. The Frederick Douglass Medallion was awarded to Sunny Hostin, co-host of The View and Emmy-award winning legal correspondent, for using her platform to bring awareness to social issues and advance equality. Our first honoree, Sunny Hostin told the packed room at Pier 60 in New York City of how fighting to tell the story of Trayvon Martin helped her to find her voice. For the first time she had a reason to fight for the truth to be told on a National level.

At first she received feedback that the story was not worthy of national exposure “because it was just another Black boy that was killed.” But her persistence paid off and CNN’s Anderson Cooper allowed her to tell her story, Trayvon’s truth, and spur a national activist movement.

This was a bold and a difficult undertaking—but Ken managed to transform the Brooklyn D.A’s office in his three years there. He established a review unit which moved to vacate or dismiss convictions of 21 people who were wrong-

fully convicted of murder or other offenses. Ken, like the New York Urban League, was quintessentially ‘New York’ and represented the best qualities of our community.

Over the years, this ceremony has acted as an avenue to bring together the best in business, the arts, entertainment and sports to further advocate for equality and change.

93 GRADUATES RECEIVE DOCTOR OF PODIATRIC MEDICINE DEGREES AT 108TH NYCPM COMMENCEMENT

t its 108th commencement ceremony for the Class of 2019, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) located on 124th St @ Park Avenue in Harlem, granted 93 Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degrees, three diplomas for completion of three-year residencies, and two honorary degrees, including one for its keynote speaker.

The commencement took place at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City.

Keynote speaker, the Honorable Robert J. Rodriguez, MBA, was elected to the New York State Assembly in November 2010, and represents New York’s 68th

Assembly District, which includes Central Harlem, East Harlem (including NYCPM) and parts of the Upper East Side in Manhattan. In his introductory remarks, NYCPM President and CEO Louis L. Levine introduced Assemblymember Rodriguez as a “particularly important ally of and good friend to the College and the Foot Center of New York,” who has helped shepherd a bill

through Albany that would provide patients enrolled in Medicaid managed care programs access to the Foot Center of New York (the clinical teaching affiliate of NYCPM).

In his remarks, Rodriguez reminded the students of their important role in helping diabetics maintain foot health as they manage their disease. Diabetes is an epidemic in East Harlem, part of Mr. Rodri-

he heroes in comic books arrive in fancy costumes.

Their heads are ringed by bubbles that say things like “POW!” and “ZOOM!” and that’s when bad guys fall like dead twigs from a tree.

BAM! All the heroes in comic books are super-powerful and mighty but here’s the thing: as you’ll see in the new book “Martin Luther King, Jr.: Voice for Equality!”

Welcome to this history tour. Your guides are Libby (a.k.a Lady Liberty, the statue) and the boy who will someday be

Yes, that was his name at birth: Michael King, Jr., but when Mike was a boy, his father changed both their names to honor a religious man. That was also when Martin Luther King, Sr. decided to become a minister. Later, Martin Luther King Jr. did, too.

Back then, young King knew that it was wrong to deny someone their rights, based on the color of their skin. As a child, he vowed to do something about Jim Crow laws someday but it wasn’t until he was older and visited Connecticut that he learned what it

was like not to be segregated. That trip changed his focus: he was still a man of God, but he’d use his talents as speechmaker and leader to gain civil rights for African Americans.

It wasn’t easy.

King’s house was bombed and, although his family was safe, it was scary. His followers and friends were beaten and bloodied in fields, on the streets, and in marches.

His life was threatened and that landed him in the hospital once.

And yet, King never gave up; he persevered by reaching out to politicians and other influential people who could help the cause. He planned and
