by Minnie Mouse, Trip to Walt Disney World

E

ight-year-old meets Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan before surprise trip to Walt Disney World Resort On Good Morning America, the world was introduced to eight-year-old Lexi, whose inspiring story of hope and perseverance touched hearts across the country. Lexi underwent a successful kidney transplant with her dad’s donation last week following a number of lifelong health issues. Lexi has repeatedly surprised her doctors with her resilience and exuberance, and

this time was no different.

After her surgery, Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan visited Lexi at Mount Sinai Hospital with a surprise guest – her favorite Disney character, Minnie Mouse!

The two shared a heartwarming exchange which led to an even bigger surprise: an invitation for Lexi and her family to visit Minnie again during a future trip to Walt Disney World Resort.

Lexi from Harlem, NY was born without a bladder – a super rare condition.

bladder using her colon at age 6. Last week she had a successful kidney transplant from her dad. One of her requests was to meet Minnie Mouse and her dream came true when Minnie made a surprise visit at Mount Sinai.

5 or 20 years ago, there were very few people who could have imagined that the U.S. would again lead the world in the production of natural gas and oil.

And even fewer who would have thought that we could reduce carbon emissions faster than any other nation. Today, we are doing both.

The natural gas and oil industry supports the jobs of more than 10 million American workers, and reports projectan additional 1.9 million job opportunities in America’s natural gas and oil and petrochemicals industries by 2035 – nearly 40 percent of which will be held by African American and Hispanic work-

ers. The natural gas and oil industry leads all other sectors– including utilities, tech and health care – in compensation for U.S. workers, because as an industry, we take pride in providing well-paying careers and opportunities for individuals and families, offering support for communities and driving local and national economies.

The American energy revolution is changing life for the better. Stable, affordable energy brings economic stability and cleaner air. It is reviving American manufacturing, and restoring jobs we used to hear were gone forever. Advanced technologies, best practices and industry standards allow

the natural gas and oil industry to safely and responsibly explore and develop both onshore and offshore, and this development means that the industry can continue leading the way in bringing large economic benefits – including investments and jobs – to communities across the country, as well as affordable and reliable energy.

These benefits are tangible – like newly paved roads, upgraded school buildings and better funded land and water conservation projects. Just last month, onshore lease sales in New Mexicoresulted in nearly $500 million in revenue awarded to the state from oil and natural gas production on federal lands. Evetta Petty has been designing hats for nearly 30 years in her Harlem’s Heaven Hat Shop. Evetta is known for her wearable art headpieces that have been featured worldwide on the pages of Vogue, Elle, and the cover of Harper’s Bazaar.

She is also the creator of those show stopping Sunday morning hats that are seen all over the country.

lzheimer’s Disease is expected to impact nearly 14 million Americans by 2050, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. So, as you set your New Year’s resolutions for 2019, consider the following ways to maintain and improve your cognitive function.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s U.S. Study to Protect Brain Health Through Lifestyle Intervention to Reduce Risk (U.S. POINTER) is a two-year clinical trial that hopes to answer this question, and is the first such study to be conducted of a large group of Americans nationwide.

While there’s currently no certain way to prevent Alzheimer’s and other dementias, there is much to be gained by living a healthy lifestyle and adopting brain health habits that you enjoy, so that you stick with them for the long haul.

FDNY Honors MLK’s Legacy of Nonviolence through Personal Narratives

n January 24 the FDNY community came together for their annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of nonviolent resistance at their downtown Brooklyn headquarters. The event was organized by Cecilia B. Loving, Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the FDNY. Battalion Chief Mark Guerra opened up the event by introducing Firefighter Regina Wilson who sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” known as the National Black Anthem.

After a prayer by Reverend Ann Kansfield, Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro, First Deputy Commissioner Laura R. Kavanagh and MWBE Program Analyst David Francis shared the impact MLK Jr.’s legacy had on their personal and professional lives. Francis

connected Dr. King’s mission to fight for the law to be used as a means of protection rather than victimization to NYC’s law around increased procurement to Minority and Women Owned Businesses (MWBEs).

According to Francis the FDNY is slated to spend over 100 million dollars on contracts with MWBEs in fiscal year 2019.

The program brought to the stage FDNY employees representing a variety in gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity.

Each shared their personal story that embodied one of the Dr. Kings’ six principles of nonviolence published in his first book Stride Toward Freedom.

derstanding.” When she started at the department she had a colleague who met her good mornings with a “What’s so good about it?” response. She persisted in offering friendly greetings and build a friendship with her colleague Dan. Harris was one of the last people he spent time with before his sudden death. At his funeral, Dan’s family told Harris: “He said you were one of his true friends.”

to defeat injustice not people.” Having grown up in a suburban area of Long Island with a white majority, Guinan, who self-identifies as transgender, spoke of being bullied in school. One day in middle school a voice behind her yelled “faggot” and when she turned around she saw a black student.

She responded with a racial slur and immediately afterwards she said, “I saw his look and felt what it was like to be the villain.” Guinan, who became FDNY LGBTQ Outreach Coordinator in 2015, encouraged the

audience to consider Michelle Obama’s advice, “When they go low, we go high” and ended her talk by saying, “I challenge you to think of the people that harm you not as villains, but as human beings.”

The other speakers included David Lin, FDNY Candidate Training Coordinator; Solomon Chinnery, NYPD Detective; Anabel Perez, FDNY Intergovernmental Liaison; Abayomi Ajaiyeoba Whint, FDNY Legal Enforcement Attorney and Nelson Roman, FDNY Lieutenant.

Lieutenant Jonathan D. Logan was in the audience to support his former supervisor and friend Nelson Roman. Logan was moved by the inclusion of diverse voices at the FDNY event. “It is a sign of the time and a testimony that the universe is bending toward justice,” said Logan, adding “It is proven that a diverse team is a better team.”

ll right, all together now . . . bend and stretch and bend and stretch! That was the mantra when my girlfriends and I decided to start exercising. You

see, we discovered that our sedentary habits had literally grown on us! A call to action was in order for us to change our ways. Instead of hiring a trainer, we decided to put together our own exercise program. The plan is to develop toned muscles and lose the lumps. We agreed to work out for an hour three times a week to achieve our individual fitness goals. We have also committed to improving our eating habits by including more fresh fruits and vegetables and to seriously cut back on our intake of comfort foods, general junk and sweets.

Seek out a convenient class at the Y and if you have a gym membership — use it. How about organizing a group of your friends?

tion of nervous chuckles and “time outs” to catch our collective breath. It seems that we overestimated our fitness level.

Lessons learned: (1) Heed the old warning, “Before beginning any exercise program, consult with your doctor.” (I was so sore after the first workout that I wanted a painkiller!) (2) Don’t laugh while exercising; you’ll need all the air you can get. (3) Before you can tighten those stomach muscles you must first develop them.

(4) Never underestimate the power of a three pound weight. (5) There is comfort in steamed broccoli.

We look forward to getting in shape and in-

aybe you want more energy, or perhaps you want to lose weight and keep it off for good. Whatever your goals, a new year means a fresh start to become the best version of yourself.

Here are five tips from Nutrisystem experts to get your scale moving in the right direction and support your long-term health.

1. Skip “diet” drinks: Of course, you know not to order the regular cola with your meal, but you figure the lower-calorie diet version is an okay choice. Not necessarily.

One recent review of research found that artificial sweeteners often used in diet drinks may not be as beneficial for weight management as intended, and that drinking them regularly may be linked to an increased body mass index.

If you want something fizzy, opt for seltzer with lemon or lime. But if you can’t stop dreaming of that diet soda, it doesn’t have to be completely off-limits. Just try to cut back.

2. Drink more water: Ev-

ery part of your body needs water to work properly. When you don’t get enough, your body can’t perform normal functions, which can drain your energy. More fatigue means less physical activity. Plus, mild dehydration is often masked as hunger -prompting you to grab a snack when all you really need is water. Nutrisystem experts recommend drinking at least eight, 8-ounce glasses daily.

3. Slow down: It takes 20 minutes for the “I’m full” signals from your stomach to reach your brain. When you inhale your food, it’s much easier to eat more than your body really needs. One review of 23 studies found that fast eaters were about twice as likely to be obese, compared to slow eaters. To help slow down, take smaller bites, chew 10 to 15 times and put your fork down between each bite.

4. Don’t eyeball portions: “The super-sized meals at restaurants have given us a skewed view of proper portion size,” says registered dietitian for Nutrisystem, Courtney McCormick.

Even if you’re tracking

your food intake with an app or food journal, overestimating portions can sabotage progress.

McCormick’s solution: Measure portions -- not forever, but for a while at the start. Doing so will help you get a visual of what portions should actually look like. You may also consider eliminating some of the guesswork with a program, such as Nutrisystem, that offers pre-portioned, nutritionally-balanced meals.

5. Reduce stress: Stress can cause your body to burn calories more slowly, which could lead to weight gain, according to a study. Plus, stress increases hormones that stimulate appetite, and the foods you’ll crave for comfort tend to be high in fat and sugar.

That’s what you’d like to tell just about everybody right now: go away. Stop talking to me. Don’t fuss, quit fighting, put away those bad words. You’re done, so leave me alone.

As in the new book “Genesis Begins Again” by Alicia D. Williams, life is much easier if you don’t rely too much on people who hurt you.

The Mean Girls at her old school were dumb.

Thirteen-year-old Genesis Anderson had proof: the list they circulated was titled “100 REASONS WHY WE HATE GENESIS” but only sixty things were on the list and some were totally lame.

Whatever. Every now and then, Genesis added her own entries to the list.

She hated that she let Mean Girls get away with being mean. She hated herself because her Dad drank too much and gambled with rent-paying money, so her family moved a lot. She hated having to stay with her Grandma, however temporary it was each time.

Most of all, she hated her dark skin and her tangly-thick curls, and that she didn’t inherit her mother’s coffee-with-milk complexion and “good hair.”

She could’ve added that she hated having fake friends but, after yet another publicly humiliat-

Thankfully, as it turned out, things weren’t bad at Farmington Oaks Middle School , just outside Detroit . In the beginning, Genesis kept to herself because there were Mean Girls there, too, but she was happy to see that most of the kids were nice. She began to make real friends, and she found her first BFF. She even liked her teachers, including the one who encouraged her talents as a singer.

But none of these positives changed Genesis’s view of herself as “ugly.”

Dark skin, “nappy” hair, there had to be a way to fix it. Once she learned the secrets in her family, past and present, there was just no way she could accept herself as she was…

Starting with an awkward situation with frenemies, author Alicia D. Williams introduces 9-to13-year-olds to an observant, smart-but-typical kid with modern problems, including a kind of racism that’s not often discussed.

What ultimately happens is a shocker to the story, in part because we’re abruptly told the truth about some of the adults in Genesis’ life and though it explains a lot, it’s not pretty.

We learn of this ugliness when she does, presenting an opportunity for readers to think about (and deal with) topics that might be new or uncomfortable.
