By next week’s issue we will have a new administration guiding our nation. We will all brace to see what will happen between now and next week. I remain hopeful that we will be able to exhale and begin to capitalize on the “hope” that 2021 promises Monday, January 18th is Dr. Martin Luther Kings’ Birthday Celebration. In this issue, Hazel Smith asks the question “What Would Martin Do?” –see page 13.

Thank you, thank you to the now “Blue” state of Georgia. By next week’s issue the US Senate and US Congress will be controlled by the Democratic party, ensuring Biden will have the best chance of going forward with his plan to build our economy, defeat COVID 19, address Civil Rights for African Americans, as well as unite the people of the United States of America.

I plan to get my shot as soon as it is offered to me. I am hopeful this will help to end the Pandemic and bring us back to a place where we can meet in person, have family gatherings, enjoy theater and concerts again and just have fun.

Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. Takes Pfizer I BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine

ast Week Civil Rights Icon and President of The Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. was administered a dose of Pfizer’s BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at Roseland Community Hospital in Chicago, IL. Rev. Jackson was accompanied by Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, an immunologist at the Vaccine Research Center at the National Institute of Health (NIH) and is one of the lead scientists who developed the COVID-19 vaccine. In addition, Dr. Corbett conducts basic and preclinical research and worked on pre-clinical development of the mRNA-1273 vaccine against COVID-19. As part of an ongoing effort, Rev. Jackson and Dr. Corbett are collaborating with Roseland Community Hospital to spread awareness and encourage Americans, especially minori-

ties, those with compromised immune systems and the elderly that the inoculations of the vaccine are safe, and it will help save lives especially in Chicago communities.

“Right now, there is a lack of trust in medical establishments,” said Dr. Corbett. “The hope is that seeing an influential figure such as Rev. Jackson receive the vaccine will positively influence community to follow suit.”

As of January 6, The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 7,569 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 139 additional deaths, bringing the total number of known infections in Illinois to 999,288 and the statewide death toll to 17,096 in 102 counties in Illinois. The age of cases ranges from younger than one to older than 100 years.

“We need to ensure eradicating this horrible virus from our lives and move on to our new normal,” said Rev. Jackson. “The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted existing disparities in our nation and specifically in the Black community resulting in a hospitalization rate 3.7 times greater and a death rate 2.8 times greater than that of the White community.

We need our strong leadership in our government to have the vaccines administered to people of color as soon as possible before the death rate rises to catastrophic proportions.”

In an effort to flatten the curve of COVID-19, Roseland Community Hospital has launched

a social media awareness campaign called #IGOTIT. The campaign is created to inform and encourage the community to get vaccinated. “We want our community, especially our elderly and first responders to know that the vaccinations will save a lot of lives!” said Tim Egan, President and CEO of Roseland Community Hospital. “Roseland Community Hospital is a “safety net and “essential” hospital with 90% of its patients being African-American or Indigenous” and 75% of its patients are elderly. Roseland has one of the largest testing sites in the nation and have already tested 25,000 community residents in Chicago.

Rev. Jackson closed the event with a statement “The historical past of the Tuskegee Experiment did not have the benefit of science and statistics, expertise and technology. Science upholds the need and via-

bility of the COVID-19 vaccine ... at that time, we did not have African American doctors, researchers doing the experiment, we did not have more than 60 African American Congressional Leaders, more than one third of America’s top-100 cities are governed by African Americans and more than 100 state elected officials. Building equity in plans to distribute the vaccines including culturally sensitive, multi-lingual outreach tailored for local communities will be essential for closing gaps in health outcomes.”

Rev. Jackson added: “I want to thank Roseland Community Hospital and Dr. Corbett and her team for “raising awareness about the importance of taking the vaccine and the work she does “when there is so much skepticism.”

Make America Whole: How to Heal our Divided Society

By Keith Magee n Wednesday a White man strolled into an office, settled down in a leather chair, and casually put his dirty boots on the desk in front of him. I saw this and I wept.

For this was not his office, but that of Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. She had been evacuated by armed police for her own protection and the man, Richard Barnett, was part of a pro-Trump mob of domestic terrorists who had smashed their way into the U.S. Capitol building. It had been a long and traumatic day at the end of a long and traumatic four years, and this is what reduced me to tears – a photograph of a White man with his feet up.

How very easily he and his fellow extremists had strolled, virtually unchallenged by police, through the halls of power. How comfortably he committed the crime of sedition, disgracing our country while the whole world watched on in amazement. How warmly he was praised for his thuggery by a president who called him ‘a very special person’ and a ‘patriot’.

I wept for our national humiliation and for the violation of our precious, fragile democracy.

I wept for all the Black protesters who just six months previously had knelt on the hard, hot streets outside that very building to peacefully proclaim that their lives matter and who had been beaten, pepper sprayed, and arrested for their pains.

Many of the rioters who stormed the Capitol in the dying

days of Donald Trump’s nightmarish presidency had tattoos linking them to White supremacist groups with their roots in some of the darkest – or perhaps whitest – chapters of U.S. history. Racism and its dreadful consequences are deeply engrained in our past and have never been fully resolved. Our present is tainted by the ongoing devaluing of those with Black and Brown bodies – we can still hear their blood crying from the ground.

I truly believe that the struggle for justice for all will one day succeed, but not before we, as a nation, own the sin of racism. Its horrors cannot be negated – they must be examined honestly and repented, and the pernicious myth of race dismantled for good.

But rather than seek retaliation against those who are taken in by racist lies and madcap conspiracy theories we should reach out to them. We should strive for reconciliation, for with God’s blessings of forgiveness and

grace, even the worst of us can be turned away from evil in repentance and redirected towards good. And if it proves beyond us to change these people’s minds, then we must hope to teach their children the true values of our democracy. We must show them how to also love those who don’t look or sound like their parents, so that this hatred does not poison the hearts of any more generations of Americans.

Sadly, the divisions we face today are open wounds that go well beyond a few extremist groups – they permeate throughout our society. President-Elect Biden is now fighting to mend the soul of America. He cannot do it alone or quickly – a cure will take decades – but he can lead us all in bold, strategic steps towards healing.

Wounds must be allowed to breathe: first, we must talk openly to one another about our discontent and our anger, our fears and our hopes. And we must listen. This will require love, civility, and courage, but we should not rest until we find common ground. We may be surprised by how much unites us. We all have a soul. We all dream of a better future. We are all American patriots. We all long for justice. We are all God’s children.

Having revealed our shared humanity, the next step will be to repair our broken nation. Politicians, faith and community leaders, and educators will all have their roles to play, but each of us has the capacity to offer our own unique solution – look into your heart and ask yourself, what can I do to make the world better? How can I overcome my

distrust of the ‘other’ and truly attempt to engage with, understand, and even love someone whose ideologies are utterly different to my own? How can I redirect both our energies towards the common good?

If I could, I would like to sit down in a brave space somewhere with that man who put his feet up in Nancy Pelosi’s office. I would ask him what he was hoping to achieve that day, what he was so angry about and why. I would try to really listen to his answers, however abhorrent I found his beliefs. I suspect he would tell me that he thought he was fighting to save democracy, because he saw it as the very soul of America, the source of all hope. Now that, surely, is one thing that we would be able to agree on. And perhaps that would be a start …

President-Elect Biden Says Police Would Have Reacted Far Different With Black Lives Matter Protestors

resident-elect Joe Biden pulled no punches on Thursday when he spoke about the violent mob that rioted, looted, and ransacked the U.S. Capitol a day earlier.

The actions from the mob of President Donald Trump supporters contributed to death, destruction, and global embarrassment for the United States.

The Delaware Democrat spoke of his granddaughter sending him a photo of armed security guards and law enforcement standing at the Lincoln Memorial during a Black Lives

Matter protest last year.

She said, "Pop, this isn’t fair. No one can tell me if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, they would have been treated very, very different than the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol." Biden relayed.

“We all know that it is true. And it is unacceptable. Totally unacceptable,” Biden remarked.

Black Lives Matter officials had earlier made the same observation.

In news interviews following the Capitol’s chaotic scene, Toni Sanders of Black Lives Matter called the treat-

ment of the pro-Trump rioters a double standard.

Sanders and others took note of how some of the Capitol officers opened gates and let the mob into the immediate area outside the building’s doors.

“I am enraged by the light treatment that these terrorists are getting,” Sanders demanded.

“They have guns. They have attacked the police.

They have attacked innocent people who are just in the area, and yet they

have not been beaten and teargassed and had flashbangs thrown at them the way we had all summer long. We didn’t have any weapons. All we had were our voices saying, ‘Black lives matter.’”

Biden also implored media members to not label the mob at the U.S. Capitol as “protestors.”

“They weren’t protesters. Don’t dare call them protesters. They were a riotous mob, insurrectionists, domestic terrorists,” the President-Elect stated.

For the past four years, June has been New York Music Month, the official New York City celebration of the most diverse music scene in the world, with events across five boroughs. This year, however, the city’s music scene has been dealing with the pandemic, which has brought almost all live performance to a standstill. In response, MOME has supersized Music Month to include an anticipated 40-plus events over the course of six months, all safe, virtual and free. As always, New York Music Month Extended Play (NYMMEP) will have something for artists, industry and fans, but with an added urgency in order to support our vital music scene at a time of unprecedented concern.

Rev. Raphael Warnock’s Historic Win in Georgia Senate Race

ev. Raphael Warnock, who is the pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, the Atlanta church where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was pastor during the civil rights movement, is now the first Black Democrat to be elected to the U.S. Senate in the Deep South in the modern political era.

Warnock is the first African American to win a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia’s history.

The runoff election featured historic turnout. A voter registration strategy implemented by former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, along with a push by grassroots groups like Black Votes Matter, led by LaTosha Brown, was a deciding factor in Warnock’s decisive win. Black voters in Georgia over-performed in the early vote and on Election Day. The balance of power in Washington and on Capitol Hill will now shift dramatically to Democrats who will now control Congress

and The White House. The dual victories on the same night by Rev. Warnock and Jon Ossoff marks a repudiation of the GOP under Donald Trump.

Rev. Warnock won his heavily contested U.S. Senate race over billionaire Kelly Loeffler who was appointed to the Senate by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in December 2019. The U.S. Senate race cost over $200 million with soon-to-be Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell donating over $60 million from his PAC. By late Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning after Election Day in Georgia, Warnock had 2,227,296 votes to Loeffler’s 2,173,866.

On top of Warnock’s historic win, another Democrat, Jon Ossoff has won against incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue.

As election results continued to come in showing how close the Warnock/ Loeffler race would be, some Republicans began assigning blame for the

In the race for The White House in 2020, Trump lost Georgia to Joe Biden by over 11,000 votes on November 3, 2020. In the days before the runoff elections in Georgia, Trump spent most of his time criticizing other Republicans in Georgia. Trump had earlier called into question the validity of the voting process in Georgia. The President also pressured Georgia officials to flip the state in his

favor as Congress is set to officially certify the presidential election.

Trump’s words signaled an internal war in the Republican Party as the out-going President caused problems within the GOP. Trump attacked Republican Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and the Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger.

That, along with out-going U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell single handedly blocked $2,000

checks to assist Americans in a pandemic that has killed over 350,000 people, likely impacting the results in Georgia.

WWMD: What Would Martin Do?

of ongoing systemic racism, we should first revisit what he did and what he said that is evidence.

In 1955, Dr. King was the leader and most visible spokesperson of the civil rights movement. The world knew Dr. King’s intentions were to advance civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience; to march for the rights of our people to vote; for labor rights and other basic civil rights.

As president of The Montgomery Improvement Association, Dr. King coordinated the 13-month Montgomery bus boycott in which Black people refused to ride. The 1955 mass protest which was sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses is unconstitutional. The overwhelming success prompted international attention.

As the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Dr. King organized numerous nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama, and the most popular

1963 March on Washington.

King’s speech titled “The Drum Major Instinct” offered to avid followers an opportunity to hear what it is he would want said at his funeral.

Among numerous profound statements, he proclaimed with clarity, “I’d like for somebody to say that day that Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to live his life serving others….if you want to say that I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice….say that I was a drum major for peace.” And, his favorite song would speak the answer of his request, “Then my living will not be in vain.”

In 1968, Dr. King spoke at the National Cathedral with the subject, “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution” that included words that struck deep in the conscious of the nation when he admonished “racial injustice is still the black man’s burden and the white man’s shame” and adding fuel to that fire, he said, “the time is always ripe to do right.”

As Dr. King was doing what his belief demanded and his de-

termination in the fight for justice commanded, forces were already at work to bring his journey to a shocking end.

The plan for the Poor People’s Campaign, a works in progress, would be the next chapter in the struggle for equality and King’s belief that African Americans and other minorities would never enter full citizenship until they had economic security. Violence and riots erupted in cities

across the nation following his death on April 4, 1968 King’s marches, once regarded as the way to justice via nonviolent disobedience have since burst into a monumental Black Lives Matter movement with a plethora of races, colors and ages taking to the streets to protest the same racism, injustice, health disparities and blatant economic discrepancies in the world’s supposedly wealthiest nation.

And so, I ponder with a fervent desire to know, what would Martin King, Jr. do, today?

harles Sheldon, a minister in Topeka, Kansas posed a question of moral decision making at the end of his weekly sermons.

The reverend used the phrase what would Jesus do? to encourage righteous behavior from his flock at the Congregational Church in 1886.

Each week the new sermon would answer that question and by 1896, Sheldon had collected sufficient sermons to publish a book, “In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do? The book was read by a youth minister in Holland, Michigan and she took the idea to another height engraving the question as an acronym WWJD on bracelets as a reminder for the youth of her church to consider decisions made by Jesus before stepping into their own. The idea has spread rapidly to this present day; WWJD can be found on t-shirts, banners, mugs, and numerous other specialty items.

I submit the acronym WWMD – What would Martin do? Before we can begin to contemplate the movement of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in today’s dilemmas

While volunteer efforts may look a bit different this year, there are still many safe ways to give back.

onstipation is something that most people have likely experienced at one time or another. For some people however, symptoms can occur over the long term.

Symptomatic individuals and patients should learn more about two types of long-term constipation: Chronic Idiopathic Constipation (CIC) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Constipation (IBS-C).

While CIC and IBS-C share many of the same symptoms, there are important differences between the two.

One in seven U.S. adults have CIC and those with this condition may experience: • Infrequent bowel 16

movements (BMs) • Hard-to-pass BMs • Straining • Discomfort • Not feeling empty after a BM In addition to symptoms of CIC, patients with IBS-C also experience abdominal pain

related to changes in bowel movements, and one in 20 U.S. adults are living with this chronic condition.

The causes of CIC and IBS-C are not known. That said, for some, the cause could be linked to changes

in the connections between the brain and the gut.

If you’re experiencing constipation, you should consider speaking to your doctor who may help address your symptoms.

“Your physician can diagnose your condition and offer treatment options that may provide relief,” says Howard Franklin, MD, MBA, chief medical officer, Salix Pharmaceuticals.

He suggests asking your doctor the following questions: • What are my options if lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications haven’t worked?

• How many bowel movements should I be

having each week?

• What consistency should they be?

Dr. Franklin also recommends coming to your appointment prepared to share what symptoms you’re experiencing and how long you’ve been trying to manage them. You might also be asked to identify what type of stool you most frequently experience when you are not taking medication using the Bristol Stool Form Scale.

onfidence is a great thing. It can make people more open to learning new skills, pursuing new opportunities and living new experiences. When it comes to career choices, confidence, or rather a lack of it, can keep qualified and motivated individuals from even considering certain fields. Technology is at the forefront of this dilemma, according to those in the industry, who also note that lingering misconceptions may be widening a “confidence gap.”

“For too long we’ve been telling young people that the best jobs of the future will require advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering or math,” said Todd Thibodeaux, president and CEO

of CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association. “The reality is that the vast majority of good paying jobs in the next 30 years won’t require a STEM degree.

The Illusions of Reality

The answers to most of those questions rest on a foundation of perceived facts that have nothing to do with the truth.

What happens when you allow yourself to become angry or depressed? A story is played over and over in your mind.

Something happens or something did not happen. The reasons that justify the depressed or angry state are illusionary perceptions that create mental facts. The path towards deprogramming is learning to question the reasons for your anger, depression, sadness, loneliness, or any feelings created by an illusion of reality or a perceived truth.

The truth cannot be perceived; the truth is what it is. Perceptions of the truth can only

create an illusion of reality, an illusion that can become a psychological prison and a danger to the self and others.

We are now living in a time where the truth is being unveiled.

I know some are tired of me writing about this, but ever since April 4th, 2020, a time when astrologers believe that we entered into the age of Aquarius, the awareness of the illusions of truth has become more obvious. Many of those who refuse to believe this are getting sick.

Stress is the foundation of most illnesses.

Fear, anger, and doubt are three major ele-

ments of stress; they are manifested by the perceived truths about the self and others.

It is not easy to admit that we see our world through the eyes of a socially programmed lens and our perceptions of truth are based on illusions of reality. Meditation, Tai Chi, Ki Training, and treatments can be useful tools in deprogramming because these types of exercises can allow you to step outside of this matrix, spiritually, mentally, and physically.

You cannot realize that you are in the matrix until you are able to step outside of it.

When you step outside of the mental matrix, you are in the Now. All illusionary thoughts of

the past and of the future disappear when you are in the Now. This new Aquarian age of truth and awareness will not be easy for many to accept.

Those who continue to allow anger, doubt, and old ways of thinking to guide their actions will face greater consequences than ever before; especially those in power.

We are moving into a period of human development where survival skills are necessary to evolve to the next stage will be skills learned outside the matrix of socially programmed perceived truths and facts derived by illusions of reality. Nature is selective.

No doubt, you’ve heard those words before: whenever you’re in trouble – lost, scared, unsure, in danger – look around. Somewhere nearby, there’s someone who’ll help. As in the new book “Nine Days” by Stephen Kendrick and Paul Kendrick, though, it might not be quick.

The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. had been in jail before.

It was fast then, in and out the same day but still not pleasant and as a Black man in 1960, the prospect of an entire night there

was loathsome. So when a group of students in Atlanta asked King to help integrate restaurants in one of the city’s largest department stores, he understood the sacrifice and he prayed on it first.

In the end, he stood

with the students and his worst fears came true.

Their jail sentence was short and while they were kept mostly together, King was not among the last of the students released three days later. His sentence:

four months’ hard labor due to a driver’s license issue he thought had been taken care of, the spring prior.

He was moved to another jail, and then another, each farther away from his family and further endangering his life.

Some time before, King had reached out to the two 1960 Presidential candidates, asking them to put Civil Rights at the forefront of their agendas.

He thought he knew who would be most likely to help: King had met Richard Nixon, and he genuinely liked Nixon. He had struggled to arrange time with John Kennedy, however.

That summer, the Kennedy camp itself struggled.

JFK’s campaign staff understood, with the help of Louis Martin, a respected Black newspaperman, that the candidate who attracted “Negro” voters would win the White House and Nixon was besting them.

At the urging of his staff, Kennedy picked up the phone and made a call...

Two of them, as a matter of fact – JFK made two phone calls that may’ve changed the outcome of the 1960 election and perhaps the course of history. In a story that spreads forward and back and sets a few facts straight, “Nine Days” tells about those calls, King’s jail-time, and how they are forever linked.

But wait: did Nixon and Kennedy both seem to drag their feet on King’s release? Authors Stephen Kendrick and Paul Kendrick answer that question in a peek at 1960s politics and society that’s fascinating but also frustrating to read, content-wise. Kendrick and Kendrick don’t let that feeling linger, though: inside the tale of King and Kennedy is the story of a man whose wisdom, savvy, and his reputation with Black newspapers altered the election in a way that, as it’s told, feels like the cheer-worthy last ten minutes of a truly great movie.

Though its focus is small, “Nine Days” is a gigantic tale that you won’t want to stop reading once you’ve started it. Really, this is the kind of book you can’t help but love.
