She was a member who attended the church frequently. (see page 10) My first cousin, Sandra Cruz, is still in the hospital on a respirator as we go to press and her 2 sons also are suffering from COVID. Please pray for my family. I have an appointment for my second shot of the Pfizer vaccine on February 18th – Stay tuned.

PONDER THIS! How Does it Feel to be FREE?

he Emancipation Proclamation was an official order signed into effect by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. It was not a law passed by Congress, but one based on the president’s constitutional authority as commander in chief of the armed forces.

The Proclamation has been criticized and scrutinized to the present day as to whether it can be deemed as a true effort by President Lincoln to set the slaves free or a means of Black manpower for the ongoing

Civil War. FREE is a complex word with numerous descriptive and suggestive connotations. Webster’s dictionary reads FREE to mean: 1 not under the control of power or another; having liberty,

independent. The list continues to twelve examples.

After the weeping, after the shouting, after celebratory singing and dancing follows the freedom news, what do you do next. When all you have ever known has been in captivity with every decision made without any consideration of your opinion, your feelings or your life, reality will demand an emotional response. How does it feel to be FREE and what does it mean?

It is not enough to simply aspire to be free to be me. There must be a plan of preparation for the next step

that will be necessary in the newfound freedom. One door closed opens the possibility of another opening elsewhere that may not be a better scenario or situation.

A good example is how the present pandemic opened the way for opportunities to work from home.

Computers and laptops became precious possessions, offering the freedom so many had been hoping would be an option long before the mandates came to shut down the city.

At first, many thought it would be easy to manage the flow of working from home on their own schedules without a time clock or employer looking over their shoulder.

Thoughts of sleeping late, having lunch whenever, while continuing to keep up the workload seemed to be an acceptable mindset. Soon enough they discovered total freedom was not at hand.

Employers expected and devised ways to control work time and scheduling through the computers for those working from home. 9 to 5 had not been discontinued.

As months of sameness continued, some weary stay at home workers wanted to get out of the house and

oddly back into the revolving eyes of their bosses.

They missed the camaraderie and coffee cup chatter in offices and cubicles.

What happened to freedom?

Parents were forced into home remote

learning for their children, which alleviated the COVID stress of sending children into buildings where it was not safe. iPod and laptops were distributed to homes and the children were good to go. Then, parents realized, in addition to their own online jobs, they were now more involved in schoolwork than they had been in years. They could no longer rely on teachers to be the educator and the babysitter when they were at work. We are still in the grip of the pandemic and there are parents and grandparents who are begging schools to reopen. In many ways, they want to reclaim their freedom along with a more thorough and qualified in person education for youth.

It is a tedious endeavor to be always free on this earthly life journey.

er choice may be to accept whatever aspects of what you must do as freely as you can instead of attempting to be totally free from the responsibility. Let us put our focus on free thinking before setting ourselves up for freedom failure.

Let us strive to let our spirit run free. Everything that we are hoping for may not come as we expect it. It may come when we least expect it. Stay steady and carefully safe as you figure out what freedoms are most important to you and yours.

OP-ED: Where We Go from Here?

month into a tumultuous start of a new year, a new year following the most chaotic year in America that any living person can remember, I am seeing signs that the work in the streets, in our hospitals and at our voting booths far and wide, are saying even in states no one thought we would have captured after 2016, that even though we have been hit hard on so many fronts, it’s our front line that is now advancing for the greater good.

It is divisiveness and hate that must retreat; it is science that will now confront COVID-19.

And it is Americans of color who overcame at the polls to deliver the House, the Senate and the Presidency.

Contentious as it was, more Americans voted in the 2020 election than in any other election in 120 years. And look at what we did together.

An historic start We elected the first Black, female, Asian Vice President in Kamala Harris.

We elected in a historic runoff election, the first Black Senator from Georgia in more than a decade in Reverend Raphael

Warnock. Rev. Warnock, the pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church — where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once was pastor — has dedicated his life to service and ministry. And we tipped the U.S. senate for hard working men and women by also delivering his fellow Georgian Jon Ossoff.

Out west, Wyoming elected their first female senator; Missouri sent its first Black Congressperson to DC; Delaware elected its first transgender Senator.

The voters of New Mexico became the first state to send a delegation to the House of Representatives made up entirely of women of color. And this 117th Congress is the most diverse in our country’s history just as President Joe Biden’s cabinet promises to be.

So, for me, 2021 is about hope and about working for a better life for all and a better nation together as we rise from the terrible test that 2020 has been. It is about recommitting to one another and doing good works to help our brothers and sisters in need. And even before we voted for inclusion, we were

already making good trouble.

White, Black and Brown nationwide took to the streets this past spring and summer to ask our nation — to demand of our nation — that we address the systematic racism that has plagued this country since its founding.

That has torn the very fabric of our country and created so much pain and loss. With one voice, all were saying: “Please, at long last, fix this.”

Our path is clear It is time to think not of ourselves, not of what divides us, not of our differences, but of our common good. It is time once again to remember that there is much, much more that unites us than divides us. Those that would seek to divide us, do not want us to see this truth, but it is here and it is powerful. We must embrace it. We must together reform policies and institutions

and thinking where injustice resides and restore people to the status of neighbors, not opponents.

The great UAW President Walter Reuther, who was a close friend and supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King summed it up like this: “There is no greater calling than to serve your fellow man. There is no greater contribution than to help the weak.

There is no greater satisfaction than to have done it well.”

President John F. Kennedy famously put it just a bit differently. “Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your county.”

With those words, he inspired a generation of Americans.

We must stand strong and united against bigotry and hatred and heed the call we saw this past year as hundreds of thousands of Americans took to the streets to demand a fundamental change.

So, there is real work ahead, but I believe we are up to the task. Let us meet 2021 head on and with Solidarity. We are more than ready to bring our A game.

Home Buying in Harlem Be Prepared to Buy Now

hen preparing to apply for a mortgage there are some common mistakes prospective first time home buyers need to avoid.

These mistakes can prevent you from successfully completing the closing process. Several loan officers shared with me during a recent conversation some horrible and costly mistakes people have made that have caused their mortgage application to be denied towards the very end of the application process.

Remember you have completed the mortgage process until you have paid your down payment, signed the closing documents, and have received the keys to your property. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you move forward to completing the final steps of this process: (1) do not open any new credit accounts or make any additional large purchases until after you have closed on the purchase of your property. Every time you make a credit purchase your debt-to-income ratio (DTI) will be affected. If your DTI exceeds 43% you can be denied a mortgage. Lenders will pull your credit right up to the day of your closing. It there is any significant changes in your credit, you can be denied a mortgage.

(2) If possible do not change jobs or vocational careers until after you have closed on your home. Most lenders want to see a minimum of 24 consecutive months of work history. If you have changed careers you will need 24 months in the new position before getting approval for your mortgage. Lenders will verify your employment throughout the application process. However, now because of the COVID-19 pandemic, some lenders have become a little more flexible with applicants regarding meeting this requirement. They will decide on an individual case basis. It would be wise to check with your loan officer to confirm their policy on changing employment.

Co-signing can have a devastating impact on you completing the mortgage process. By co-signing you are assuming the entire debt for your friend’s purchase. Again, the lender will have to recalculate your DTI ratio based on this additional debt amount. If your debt has now increased significantly, you have just placed your mortgage application in jeopardy of not being approved.

Under normal circumstances, these mistakes would not be considered detrimental except when you are attempting to successfully complete the mortgage application process. Thousands of mourners pay respects to Cicely Tyson in Harlem

housand’s of mourners lined a New York City block in Harlem on Monday outside the famous Abyssinian Baptist Church, to pay their respects to Cicely Tyson at a public viewing. Some said they had come from as far as Atlanta or Los Angeles.

Many in the multigenerational crowd held photos of Tyson, who died January 28, 2021, aged 96. Her family said masks and social distancing would be required at

the viewing.

Tyson was the first Black woman to have a recurring role in a dramatic television series, the 1963 drama “East Side, West Side.” Her performance as a sharecropper’s wife in the 1972 movie “Sounder” earned an Oscar nomination.

She went on to win two Emmy awards for playing a 110-yearold former slave in the 1974 television drama “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” and another 20 years later for “Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All.” At the age of 88, Tyson won a Tony award for a revival of Horton Foote’s “The Trip to Bountiful” in 2013.

In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded Cicely Tyson the medal of freedom.

ining with the Divas is a special luncheon hosted annually by the Apollo Theater during Black History Month.

The lavish luncheon is dedicated to advancing women’s leadership through art education, and highlighting extraordinary women from many industries who serve as role models and mentors.

The eagerly awaited event is usually held on the famed Apollo Theater stage and attracts hundreds of influencers from all walks of life.

The empowering program starts with a lively champagne reception followed by a delectable lunch impeccably catered by Great Performances. During lunch Dining with the Divas honors exceptional women who are accomplishing extraordinary feats. The sweetheart event ends with each guest departing with a fabulous swag bag and heading over to the celebrated Red Rooster for a post-party celebration where they continue networking over cocktails and music.

Although COVID called for drastic changes in the usual elaborate planning, the virtual luncheon took place without a hitch and was at-

tended by hundreds of diverse and influential women who participated in empowering opportunities; and the glitz and glamour associated with Dining with the Divas prevailed!

On Thursday, February 11, 2021, the Apollo Theater held its annual Dining with the Divas luncheon at 12pm EST. This year, the annual fundraiser honored Stacey Abrams with the inaugural Living Legends Award.

In accepting her award, Abrams buoyed the sold-out virtual audience pontificating about her powerful “get out the Black vote” effort!

The program also featured a special performance by Andra Day, who will be seen in Lee Daniels’ forthcoming The United States vs. Billie Holiday, which will be released later this month, and for which she has received a Gold Globe nomination for her role in the film.

Rounding out this unique program were brief remarks given by Apollo Theater President and CEO Jonelle Procope and Executive Producer Kamilah Forbes. In her message, Procope thanked some 270 virtual attendees for their continued support of the Theater. “On behalf of everyone at the Apollo Theater, we are so grateful for your continued support of the Theater. We asked for emergency support in the spring, and you all stepped up even though I know you

too, were struggling. I am in awe of your generosity. As an original/founding member of The Supremes, she

changed the face of popular music to become a trendsetter who broke down social, racial, and gender barriers, which all started with the wild success of their first number one song.

Formed in Detroit as The Primettes in 1959, The Supremes were Motown’s most successful act of the 1960s, scoring 12 No. 1 singles.

They also continue to reign as America’s most successful vocal group to date. Their influence not only carries on in contemporary R&B, soul, and pop, but they also helped pave the way for Black artists’ mainstream success across all genres.

The Supremes achieved an unprecedented 12 No.1 hits, with 5 of them being consecutive from 1964-1965. Those songs are “Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love”, “Come See About Me,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” and “Back in My Arms Again,” according to Billboard Magazine.

In 2018, Billboard celebrated the 60th anniversary of Motown with a list of “The Hot 100’s Top Artists of All Time”, where The Supremes ranked at No. 16 and remain the No. 1 female recording group of all time.

Jan. 21, 2021, marked the 60th anniversary of the day The Supremes signed with Motown in 1961. This year, Mary kicked off the celebration of the 60th anniversary of The Supremes.

“With the same passion as she did singing with the original Supremes as well as with her solo career, the world-renowned performer was an advocate for social and economic challenges in the United States and abroad,” Wilson’s longtime publicist and friend, Jay Schwartz, said.

“Ms. Wilson used her fame and flair to promote a diversity of humanitarian efforts, including ending hunger, raising HIV/ AIDS awareness, and encouraging world peace. Mary was working on getting a U.S. postage stamp of her fellow bandmate and original Supreme Florence Ballard who passed away in 1976,” Schwartz said.

He noted that in 2019 she also published her fourth book, “Supreme Glamour.” “The coffee-table book showcased the gowns The Supremes were known for over the decades and delved into more history of the most successful female recording group of all time,” Schwartz wrote in an email.

Wilson’s influence reached beyond music. In 2018, Mary’s longtime fight for the passage of the Music Modernization Act (MMA) came to fruition when it was signed into law on Oct. 11. The law modernized copyright-related issues for new music and audio recordings due to new forms of technology like digital streaming, which did not protect music recorded before Feb. 15, 1972, according to Schwartz.

Mary Wilson’s last solo recording, the song, “Time to Move On,” reached No. 23 on the Billboard Dance charts, which marked her first time on the charts with a solo recording since The Supremes.

She was working on new projects for 2021, including an album she recently teased on her YouTube channel. Her primary love of preserving the legacy of The Supremes and introducing her music to new generations.

“I think that The Supremes had a lot to do with the awakening of the world in terms of what blackness was,” Wilson said in her 2020 NNPA interview.

“The whole world was watching Black people in a way they’d never seen.”

f you believe names do not matter or there is no power in a name, look at the history of Jim Crow, a fictitious character created

by Thomas Dartmouth Rice, a white stage actor in the 1830s.

According to some accounts, Rice had observed traditional black song and dance in his travels through the southern slave states. In one of the towns where he was performing, Rice watched an elderly black man performing a song and dance routine for his own amusement as he tended to the upkeep of a stable.

Rice studied the man, learned to imitate his every move and with extreme exaggerations added, he took his choreographed comedic characterization to the stage. Supposedly, the stable was owned by a white man named Crow, and Jim was the name Rice gave to the Black man to amuse his enthusiastic White audiences.

The highlight of the show performed in black face by Rice gave credence through entertainment to racist stereotypes of Black people. His success helped popularize the use of the black face minstrel show format and soon other White actors borrowed the name and his Jim Crow routine.

Additionally, whites began using the name Jim Crow as a derogatory term on and off stage to describe blacks as 16

buffoons, slow witted and unworthy of integration. The slanderous demeaning insinuations touted under the name and its implications aided in the spread of racist overtones and ideas North and South in the United States.

Even after slavery was abolished and minstrel shows began to slowly fade in popularity, the Jim Crow character lived on as a label and a symbol of what southern whites were determined to use as a drawback to a life of respect for Black people, freed or not.

Jim Crow connected again as the JIM CROW LAWS legalizing segregation in state and local statutes spread around the country with brute force. The most ruthless organization of the time was the Ku Klux Klan, a secret society hell bent on terrorizing, torturing, and lynching Black citizens in the night wearing white hoods and burning crosses. This became a regular aspect of life in the south to run Black people off their land.

JIM CROW LAWS went to great lengths to detail where and how formerly enslaved peo-

ple could work. Division flourished throughout the south denying black people the slightest rights. Segregated waiting rooms in bus and train stations were required, as well as public pools and schools, water fountains, restrooms, hospitals, and even burials at cemeteries. It was common practice to post signs at town and city limits warning travelers, African Americans were not welcome there.

The legal system was stacked against Black citizens, with White police and judges deciding court cases with an assurance African Americans would be subject to conviction and years of servitude in prisons.

Civil rights activities increased post-World War II, with a focus on opening the way to ensure that Black citizens were able to vote. This steadfast civil rights movement resulted in the removal of the JIM CROW LAWS. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act in 1964, which legally ended the segregation that had been institutionalized by the JIM CROW LAWS. To many, deleting JIM CROW LAWS did not guarantee things would be better. Some states in the North had neighborhoods that remained segregated and some businesses still refused to extend shopping opportunities or

employment to Black people.

Some laws have made changes in systems that we thought were eternal and many may never get on the books, but we must not forget the humiliation that was put upon us.

Forget not the strength and endurance that our people had to hold onto in the more than 400 years of cruelty, dehumanization, and blatant

disregard of human life in the long hard struggle to be free. We must celebrate our people.

Names matter when they are used to deny the rights of others. It is mandatory that we call out those who call us out of our name for their own agenda or use slavery as material for their racist side-show antics. May the spirit of our ancestors keep us grounded and com-

mitted to “been there, never again.”

Wilson said Discovery Education began a coalition model three years ago.

“We began thinking about the strength in numbers approach, and the coalition model was pretty much birthed to engage a number of companies working toward solving one particular problem. And so, with the STEM Careers Coalition, we are solving problems, invigorating and filling the future workforce pipeline with a diverse group of professionals,” she said.

The Coalition that includes Chevron, Boeing, Microsoft, ASME, and API, kicked off in 2019. After the pandemic began in early

2020, the Coalition launched “COVID-19 Solution Seekers,” a video series that spotlighted how nonprofits, corporations, and industries pivot to meet the needs presented by COVID-19.

“What I love about this dynamic network is that we can create resources and a curriculum up to the minute based on what we’re dealing with right now,” Wilson said.

“We want to connect and be as relatable as we possibly can be to students and educators. And so, at the onset of this pandemic, we were in video production. We were producing career profiles of STEM professionals from diverse backgrounds talking about their careers and their educational pathways,” Wilson continued.

She added: “When the pandemic hit, there were a lot of questions about the coronavirus and what we were doing as a community to solve the multiple problems that it began to create. And the Solution Seekers series would evolve out of that.

“We found that we could use this as an opportunity to really outline to students STEM at work on an everyday basis.”

Wilson concluded that it’s impossible to overstate the importance of STEM in minority communities.

She said it is a principal goal of the coalition.

“We wanted to make sure that we had an intentional focus on students of color, particularly those from the African diaspora, Latino and Hispanic communities, and female students,” she determined.

“These are the most highly underrepresented group in the STEM workforce. So, this [coalition] is bridging that divide and helping all of these students connect to STEM.”

Chief Wesley Williams

By: W.A.Rogers esley Williams was the third Black male to join the New York Fire Department. Williams took the firefighters physical exam at the age of 20. He was the only man to score 100% out of the 2,700 men who took the exam. Williams was appointed January 10 1919 and assigned to Engine 55 in Manhattan.

Discrimination, racism, and segregation were not much different in the North then it was in the South. The captain of Engine 55 resigned the day Williams reported to duty. All the men at Engine 55 requested transfers; they did not want the stigma of being forced to work with a Black man.

Wesley Williams endured the worse acts of racism and discrimination one could imagine.

After proving to be the strongest and bravest fire fighter at Engine 55 along with being the best fist fighter Williams was slowly accepted. Williams was promoted to Lieutenant in 1927, Captain in 1934 and the first

Black Battalion Chief in 1938. By 1940 there were 40 Black man in the New York Fire Department, all experiencing similar problems that Williams did. Chief Williams advised them to organize.

In 1944 the Vulcan Society was born.

In the spirit of Chief Wesley Williams, the Vulcan Society has been a major force in changing regulations to ban racial practices in the New York City Fire Department. I had the honor of spending time with Chief Williams in the mid-seventies, when his close friend Lloyd Dickins one of the most powerful businessmen in Harlem at that time became the President of

the Uptown Chamber of Commerce after the death of Hope R. Stevens the first black president of that organization. I was the program director for UCC, and Lloyd Williams was Vice President.

Chief Williams always told us fascinating stories about the first Harlem Renaissance. He often told stories of his daily fights until he beat every man in is unite who wanted to fight him.

He also told exciting stories about life in Harlem during the 20s and 30s.

Unfortunately, we were not able to record some of those historic stories.

When my nephew wanted to join the New York City Fire Department a few years ago his

mother came to me for advice. It seemed that after getting high scores on all his tests, my nephew had been subjected to so much bureaucratic red tape that he was becoming discouraged. I talked about this with Councilwoman Inez Dickens, the daughter of Lloyd Dickens; she smiled at me and said, “you know who to call”. I called John Combs, the President of the Vulcan Society www. vulcansocietyfdyn.org at that time.

John told me to give my nephew his cell number and he would help him. My nephew has been a New York City Firefighter for some time now and is an active member of the Vulcan Society; The Spirit of Chief Williams still lives on.

She stuck up for you when nobody else would, through thick and through thin. She had your back, she prayed for you, and she wanted the best for you. She was always there and that never changed, though in the new book “The Three Mothers”

For most of her life, Louise Langdon hated the color of her skin.

Growing up in Grenada in the late 1800s, she was surrounded by the dark-skinned children of former slaves but Louise’s father was a white man who raped her bare-

ly-teenage mother, leaving Louise with a pale complexion. For the rest of her life she held deep anger at the supremacy that white people assumed, from her migration

For much of young Jimmy’s early life, then, it was just him and his mother, and she worked long nights at a cleaning job to ensure that he had what he needed. What he didn’t need was a new stepfather, David Baldwin, who suffered from an undiagnosed mental illness.

The Reverend and First Lady of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church wanted only the best for their daughter, Alberta. The Williams gave Alberta the finest education, music lessons, all that an upper-class Black young lady would need. When an itinerant, uneducated preacher, Michael King, came calling on Miss Alberta, the Williams

were dead-set against the romance. Alberta, however, saw a good heart in Michael – one that later inspired their son, Martin.

“The Three Mothers” is one of those books that you really want to like but doing so is a challenge. It’s a very good book that’s in very bad need of an editor.

Format-wise, it starts where all good biographies do. Author Anna Malaika Tubbs tells why she wrote this book before she plunges into a brief account of the ancestry of her main subjects.

This immediately begins to build the layers of story that ultimately explain the work behind three great men.

At issue, however, is that each section of the women’s lives is woven very loosely around Black history of their era. That contributes to a confusion of timeline, and outof-place points that reduce the smoothness of a history that’s otherwise riveting. It’s like trying to watch three TV shows at once; add contradictions and a confidently-stated point-as-fact that experts still aren’t sure about, and you may be left frequently scratching your head.

If you overlook the scatteredness and don’t mind frequent side-trips, “The Three Mothers” is a great examination of a rarely-told triple story and you’ll love it. If you like your books more linear and straightforward, though, just put this one aside.
