February is Black History Month. This week we feature the celebration of the 100th Birthday of Jackie Robinson. (see page 3) Last week I was honored at Sephora on 34th Street.

Feb 4th was World Cancer Day and I was honored along with other cancer survivors for being an inspiration. I was pleased to learn that Sephora has a program to pamper women with cancer. (see page 10) Eleven students from the New York/New Jersey area will attend the Disney Dreamers Academy this year. I look forward to meeting with all of these area Dreamers and I know they will all have a life-changing experience as I have witnessed in the 10 years past that Disney has held this event with Steve Harvey and Essence magazine. (see page 13) We will continue to celebrate Black History Month so look forward to our February 21 and February 28 issues.

Brooklyn Celebrates Jackie Robinson’s 100th Birthday

O

n January 31st, 1919, Jackie Robinson was born and to honor the baseball legend on what would’ve been his 100th birthday, his family was presented the posthumous “Key to Brooklyn” award on January 31st, 2019.

Though Borough President Eric Adams was not able to make the event – he was stuck in the airport due to inclement weather – NYC Council Majority Leader Laurie Cumbo was there to hype up the young students from the Jackie Robinson Schools in Crown Heights and Queens.

“Jackie Robinson… shattered one of America’s most symbolic pillars of institutional racism when he desegregated Major League Baseball (MLB),” she said. “We want to continue to recognize that history and we want to remind you that there is so much more

Jackie Robinson was an exceptional player, playing for ten years, helping the Dodgers win the World Series championship in 1955, and being inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. According to Cumbo, Jackie Robinson inspired people in all of Brooklyn.

Every year, the Foundation holds essay contests. Three students read aloud their work on Jackie Robinson and what he meant to them. Students from PS 15 Jackie Robinson in Springfield Gardens and PS 375 Jack-

ie Robinson School in Crown Heights received certificates and medals for their essays. They were also rewarded with pizza at the end of the event.

Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter took the “Key to Brooklyn” handed by Cumbo and said she felt very humbled and proud. “I’m honored to be here to celebrate. My grandfather started here in Brooklyn, a place that was very special to him as a Brooklyn Dodger,” Pankey said. “Continue to do work, work hard, live your life with purpose, and dream big.”

MLB pitcher CC Sabathia went to P.S. 375 -- better known as Jackie Robinson School -- in Brooklyn, N.Y., to celebrate the legendary, color-line-breaking hero. He shared an awesome mural image from outside the school when he arrived. He then led the school assembly in shouting, “Happy birthday, Jackie Robinson!”

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Opens Free Clinic New Student-Run Touro Harlem Health Clinic Meets TouroCOM’s Mission of Service and Student Need for Valuable Learning Experiences

ouro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) has opened a student-run, free clinic to serve the Harlem community, Dean David Forstein, DO, announced.

The Touro Harlem Health Clinic, located at 2257 Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard in Harlem, N.Y., has begun outreach in the Harlem community to schedule appointments for those who cannot afford medical services, do not have health insurance, or are underinsured.

The clinic has been in the works for several years. Dean Forstein served as attending physician on the clinic’s first day.

“With the Touro Harlem Health Clinic we are continuing our vital mission in our community by training a diverse cohort of new doctors, who will help

reduce healthcare disparities and improve patient care throughout Harlem,” said Dean Forstein.

“We are all very proud and excited that our long-held dream of opening a free, student-run clinic for those in need is finally coming to fruition.”

Hanaa Khadraoui, a second-year student from New Jersey who chairs the clinic’s 19-member student planning committee, said funds to open the clinic have come from student fundraising efforts, with office space donated by the TouroCOM Family Health Center, which during the week serves as a student health center and as another resource for health services in the community.

Khadraoui noted most of the TouroCOM student body has been trained and are eager

to help. “The students are anxiously awaiting an opportunity to volunteer. It increases their clinical experience and exposes them to different patient populations.

Working in a free clinic for the underserved and underinsured is a valuable learning experience.”

Range of Services Offered Among the services offered are comprehensive histories and physical examinations; preventative care such as health screenings; health education and nutrition counseling; insurance and benefits screenings; as well as vaccinations and referrals to other health and social services in Harlem. Students who are bilingual in English, Spanish and Mandarin are available to staff the clinic, depending on the needs of the clients scheduled to come in.

The clinic had its official opening in November and is staffed one Sunday a month. Services are provided by appointment only, no walk-ins. Clients are scheduled to be seen by a team composed of junior and senior students under the supervision of a licensed physician who is a faculty member at TouroCOM. The junior student doctors (first and second-year students) take patient histories, while more

experienced student doctors (third and fourth-year students) take the lead on physical exams.

The faculty member serves as an attending physician, reviewing histories, physical exams and the creation of treatment plans. Certain procedures, such as administering vaccinations, are done only by the attending physician.

Dean of Student Affairs and Assistant Professor Nadege Dady, Ed.D. expressed gratitude to TouroCOM alumni for their

support and assistance in helping to start the clinic. “The college is grateful for the dedication of the TouroCOM Harlem alumni, who worked persistently to get the clinic launched. They were instrumental in molding this project and we hope that the alumni who worked so hard for the clinic’s creation will either visit or rejoin the effort in their spare time.”

Dean Forstein added that in the future, it is hoped the clinic will grow and become a significant resource for the Harlem community as well as an important element of clinical education, collaborating with students and faculty at other schools in the Touro College and University System such as the School of Health Sciences and the Touro College of Pharmacy.

rigid weather did not stop a crowd of martial arts enthusiast and practitioners from attending a screening and discussion of the film, Body Games: Capoeira and Ancestry, on the evening of February 1st, at the Museum of Modern Image, hosted by veteran filmmaker Warrington Hudlin.

Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art, that combines dance, fighting, and music.

Practitioners form a circle, while two combatants engage in ‘play.’ For years, people have attributed the creation of this art form to slaves. The film, however, points to deeper roots, following Brazilian Capoeira master, Mestre Cobra Mansa on his journey to Angola, where he makes a connection to the Angolan fighting ritual known as Engolo.

Africans and their ‘ascendants,’ should be increasingly interested in the discussion or study of Capoeira, because of its philosophy and how it is manifested in America. “We do Capoeira, the aesthetic principle of it, even if we do Kung Fu or Karate. We Africanize whatever we do, we can’t help it” explained Hudlin. Most know Hudlin for his filmmaking, but few know that he is a skilled martial artist who actually started studying Capoeira in the late 70s. His teacher,

Loy A. Webb shines ‘The Light’ on the trauma of sexual violence and the power of love.

CC Theater is celebrating the official opening of its new 52nd Street home with the Off-Broadway premiere of Loy A. Webb’s thoughts-provoking two-character play “The Light”, running till March 17th.

Powerfully directed by Logan Vaughn the play - set in present times Chicago – is masterfully written and superbly interpreted by Drama Desk Award winner McKinley Belcher III (The Royale, The Art of Racing in The Rain) and Mandi Masden (Saint Joan, Jitney).

From the very first scene the writing and the acting are so real that we are drawn into this young couple’s tastefully

furnished home and we forget we are watching a play. We are introduced to Rashad and Genesis in a day that should be one of the happiest in their lives: they are very much in love, they are celebrating their 2nd anniversary and Rashad is going to propose.

When Genesis comes home from work – she’s a school principal- Rashad has already created a ro-

mantic atmosphere with a bottle of good wine and their favorite music, but has hidden the presents he has prepared because he wants her to believe he has forgotten their anniversary.

This practical joke makes the scene witty, funny and even hilarious at times. Until it turns into a drama, rich of unexpected twists and turns, as the long-buried truth painfully comes to the surface and threatens the otherwise strong sentiment that unites the young protag-

onists. Will the power of love and trust triumph over the pain of the unsaid, the doubts and the disappointment? This is a must see.

What I mean by that is, no matter the form, the story, or topic I write about, I always want my work to be the ‘neon blinking sign’ in the darkness saying, ‘hope this way.’

My goal with ‘The Light’ is no different. I hope that it provokes conversations around sexual violence, and why victims of color are so often left on the periphery of those conversations. And what we can do as a community to better uplift and support those victims.

year! Valentine’s Day is, simply put, the commercialization of romance! Advertisers send a subliminal, yet very powerful message that everybody should be in a relationship, and that something is wrong with you if you are not. Valentine’s Day is also a day that you can use to let all the people in your life know that you love them, which means you’ll have different expressions of love for each.

So, instead of giving into the hype, consider giving a gift from the heart instead.

If you are in a relationship, don’t put so much weight on what your significant other gives you on V-Day. How does he or she treat you the other 364 days of the year?

If they treat you well, then don’t quibble if you don’t get the flowers, candy or whatev-

Give them a gift that is one of the best and easiest to give; just pick up the phone and say, “Happy Valentine’s Day, I love you my friend.” Or whatever message of love and support you would like to convey.

ebruary is American Heart Month, and an excellent reminder that there are many easy steps you can take to improve your heart health.

Unfortunately, nearly half of all U.S. adults are living with high blood pressure, putting them at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to the American Medical Association (AMA).

“During American Heart Month, we urge all Americans to take control of their heart health by knowing and monitoring their blood pressure levels and making healthy lifestyle changes that can significantly reduce the serious health consequences associated with high blood pressure,” says Barbara L. McAneny, M.D., president of the AMA. “We know that by empowering more patients to monitor and control their blood pressure, we will continue to help improve the health of patients, while reducing health care costs.”

To help you get started, Dr. McAneny and the experts at the AMA are offering six tips for this American Heart Month and beyond.

1. Know your blood pressure numbers. Visit LowerYourHBP.org.

2. Commit to manage high blood pressure.

Work with your doctor to create an individualized treatment plan that includes healthy lifestyle changes that you can realistically stick to longterm to help you maintain a lower blood pressure and lower your risk for negative health consequences.

3. Be more physically active. Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure. It is recommended that healthy adults 18 to 65 years of age get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity.

4. Eat a healthy diet.

Making simple dietary changes can help you

manage or prevent high blood pressure. These changes should include eating less sodium, reducing the amount of packaged and processed foods you consume (especially those with added sodium and sugar), reducing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and eating foods that are rich in potassium.

5. Maintain or achieve a healthy weight. Being overweight can put you at an increased risk for developing high blood pressure. Take steps to maintain a healthy weight.

6. Drink in moderation. When consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans -- up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

American Heart Month serves as an important reminder that living a hearthealthy lifestyle is possible. By paying attention to risk factors like your blood pressure, weight and more, you can reduce your risk for heart disease.

h, how you love opening presents!

You love the surprise, first of all. What did you get? You won’t find out until you rip off the paper and just the sound of that is exciting. Maybe there’s a box next, or plastic to open, or there’s simply a gift for you to enjoy. Getting presents is awesome but in the new book “What is Given from the Heart” by Patricia C. McKissack, illustrated by April Harrison, its doubly special when you have nothing to give in return.

Mama always seemed so sad.

James Otis did what he could, but it was “a rough few months.” Near-

ly a year ago, Daddy fell asleep one day and didn’t wake up; after that, the farm was repossessed and Mama had to move herself and James Otis to a tumbledown shack and there never seemed to be enough money. The final blow came when James Otis’s dog ran off.

Mama liked to point

out that they had each other. They had God, and they had small holidays and such, but James Otis knew it had been a struggle.

Then one day near Valentine’s Day, he and Mama were in church when Reverend Dennis made a special announcement. As always, the church was giving to the needy that spring but Mrs. Temple and her sevenyear-old daughter, Sarah, had been victims of a fire and they needed a special “love box.”
