February is Black History Month and we will bring you Black History Month editorial every week throughout the month of February. This week we focus on the Wilmington 10, George Caruthers and Elijah McCoy. (see pages 11, 16 & 17) Congratulations to Stacey Abrams and Black Lives Matter to receive the Nobel Peace recognition, (see page 13) As I have prayed for many others who have suffered from COVID, last summer my eldest Brother died from COVID. Now, my first cousin is in the hospital on a respirator as we go to press and her 2 sons, also, are suffering from COVID. I am from a big family so I have had several family members here in New York, Georgia, and Florida who have had the virus. I got my Pfizer COVID vaccination administered by New York Presbyterian a couple of weeks ago at the Armory on 169th Street. I had an appointment.

I arrived a few minutes before my assigned time and was surprised that although there was a line – it was a moving line. The process was very organized as you got your forms to fill out, you went to the people on computer who checked your ID and entered your info, then you were sent to the station to get your vaccine, you had to sit for 15 minutes after your vaccine so they could make sure you had no immediate reaction. While you were sitting, they came by and gave you your appointment for your second dose. My second shot is February 18th – Stay tuned.

PONDER THIS! A Mountain Out of a Molehill

aking a mountain out of a molehill is referring to over-reactive behavior in which a person makes too much of a minor issue. To associate a mountain with a molehill, it would make sense to look at the mole that is being accused of creating the mountain.

Moles are small solitary creatures who burrow tunnels in previously tilled or freshly dugged lawns, where the digging is easier. Moles create tunnels for two purposes, traveling and feeding. The mounds or

“mole hills” are excess dirt that piles up as the mole burrows.

After giving thought to the mole and its thriving lifestyle, we can understand that the metaphor of the mountain and the mole-

hill is more in keeping with the actions of humans. The hill that the mole builds is nowhere in size to the height of a mountain. One who makes a mountain out of a molehill is greatly exaggerating.

Comparing the maneuvers of the mole to a human, we see similarities in that humans dig up mounds of dirt too, but it is purposed as a source of gossip or opinions that have no actual attribute other than to cultivate the dirt. The human can spread the dirt, building the mountain for visual purposes and atten-

Much ado about nothing is another way of thinking about what we may be unintentionally doing to our mind, body, and spirit and that is the cause of much of the stress that has permeated the peace we claim to be seeking.

Exaggerating a situation needlessly can be the culprit of a headache and a confrontation. We have been in a form of forced reevaluation of ourselves and our relationships throughout the entire year of 2020.

We fell into a health phenomenon consisting of a pandemic that attacked the world and attached itself to our every waking hour.

The pandemic has become the focus of our thoughts and communication with family and friends as if there is nothing else to share.

What to do, who can do it and when will it get done are not unreasonable

questions. Those are the kind of inquiries that will continue to baffle the best minds and all ages because there seems to be no direct or concrete answer to the mountain of questions being presented.

It is not that answers, and ideas are not coming down the pipeline on what is available and working on the battlefield, it is our willingness to accept what is being provided. The vaccines have come and are circulating throughout communities and yet mountains of impatience and accusations of neglect continue to rise like mountains. Minor situations or delays are calculated as mountains of disparities when they are molehills.

Negativity can be considered the foundation of a molehill. Not the hill that the mole has left in its digging in the dirt to reach the surface, but the kind of mountain that is built for the purpose of spreading dirt that is of no value to the objective that is being

sorted.

It is tempting to stomp molehills flat, because, let us face it, they are irritating. Keep in mind, when you do that, the moles will simply push the dirt back up to reopen the tunnel.

So, what we must do is reflect on the peace that is possible when we commit to rational thinking and logical processing of the challenges that are a part of our everyday existence.

Some things are just what they are and adding to them with biased or unfounded judgements is not helpful.

If we want peace of mind and are deeply committed to collective wellness, we must refuse to add fuel to the fodder that sustains the building of mountains of mucus that is congesting our communities. Stay steady, stay carefully safe. Believe and trust that help is available, and it is just a breath away.

oday there is a welcomed breath of fresh political air in Washington, DC even amidst the unprecedented spread of the global COVID-19 pandemic throughout the United States. According to the Biden-Harris Administration the issues of racial justice and equity are now top priorities in a “whole of government” commitment to all Americans, and in particular to African Americans and other people of color communities.

Most recently the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) had a special on-the-record briefing from the White House Office of Public Engagement directed

by The Honorable Cedric Richmond who is also Senior Advisor to President Joe Biden.

As we heard Richmond strongly reaffirm the Administration’s urgent push to have the U.S. Congress to enact the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan that promises to respond to the nation’s pandemic and economic crisis respecting the principles of equity, I thought reflectively about all the various racial disparities, discriminations, and inequities that daily have a negative impact on Black America.

Yet, in 2021 we live in the age of data where the aggregation, control, and ownership of data continues to have enormous social and economic consequences for those who are poor and marginalized. One preexisting condition that has not gotten enough public attention and debate is the issue of the intersection of race, data discrimination, and inequity in America.

Data discrimination is a covert form of racism that is having a devastating overt impact on the quality for life of African Americans and others who continue to face systemic inequity.

It is relevant to note that the largest credit reporting agency in the U.S. is Equifax. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Equifax actually has become more profitable at the expense of millions of Americans who are struggling to survive to make ends meet. As a consequence, we must begin to raise questions about the apparent linkage of the expanding credit reporting industry to the growing financial inequities especially in African American communities.

As credit reporting booms while most Americans are experiencing financial hardship, Equifax’s “Work Number” workforce division is turning in record profits by raising costs on consumers. The Work Number is a user-paid verification of employment database that was acquired and now owned by Equifax. This database allows credentialed verifiers to receive instantaneous electronic confirmation of an individual’s employment data and income for verification purposes.

Today Equifax’s Work Number is charging $49.95 for the cost of an Income and Employment Report that is nearly three times what the cost of the report was six years ago at ($18).

The U.S. credit reporting industry generated over $12 billion in revenue last year, according to research from IBISWorld, and the market size

is expected to grow another 3.7% next year. The three largest agencies—Equifax ($EFX), Experian ($EXPGY) and TransUnion ($TRU) —accounted for more than 50% of the total revenue.

The industry’s growth is driven by a unique business model, which provides a dual revenue stream from consumer data. Businesses pay credit bureaus to collect employee information and manage verification requests, like those generated when an individual seeks to obtain a loan from a bank.

Agencies then charge requesting parties for the personal information, generally on a per-request basis, which is frequently passed onto the consumer.

Equifax, despite its 2017 data breach that impacted 147 million people, continues to be the largest player in the space. The company claims to have records on over 222 million U.S. consumers and receives weekly payroll data on a third of the U.S. population.

Equifax’s Work Number has benefited from the spike in unemployment caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. With millions of Americans out of work, demand for verification services has surged as creditors seek to determine employment status of loan holders and potential loan candidates.

We all know that African Americans have the largest increase in un unemployment before and even more since the beginning of the pandemic.

African American owned businesses have had the greatest financial losses amidst COVID-19. The more unemployment in Black America, the more Equifax’s Work Number data is purchased by a wide range of financial status verifiers. But who is monitoring or challenging the accuracy of the

Equifax Work Number data especially when it about African Americans?

According to Equifax’s quarterly financial reports, The Work Number generated nearly $377 million in revenue during the third quarter of last year, a 57% increase year-over-year and the second consecutive quarter of more than 50% growth. Between 2012 and 2020, The Work Numbers’ verification services revenue jumped nearly 400%.

Largely driving The Work Number’s growth is its dominance in the mortgage lending market, which accounted for 31% of the division’s revenue mix throughout last year.

The Work Number controls over 380 million current and historic consumer data records, including 100 million added between 2019 and 2020. That scale provides immense leverage over the mortgage lending industry.

“We have real scale in the business, which provides a competitive advantage,” Equifax CEO Mark Begor said on the company’s earnings call last October. “We’re now having a billion companies deliver data to us on a period basis. That makes this data set very, very valuable and tough to replicate. And if you’re one company, then you’re likely not going to give the data to two companies.

You’re going to give it to the company that’s been in it for long time.”

I ask Mark Begor a simple but serious question: “What verifiable safeguards are in place at Equifax Inc. that prevent racial and data discrimination with respect to African Americans and other people of color?”

Home Buying in Harlem Be Prepared to Buy Now

or those who are now just coming to the realization that owning a home makes good sense, congratulations for reaching that conclusion. However, buying a home in Harlem has become an extremely expensive financial process. For the past few decades, the market values of homes in Harlem have been soaring higher and higher. There seems to be no end in sight!

The great desire to purchase a home in Harlem continues to drive up the prices. Unfortunately, for most of Harlem’s residents it is now too late to buy that multi-family brownstone that you always dreamed about.

If you are fortunate maybe you can be selected from a NYC Department of Housing, Preservation, and Development (HPD) lottery to purchase a subsidized unit (usually cooperative or condominium) at an affordable price. But those opportunities are a long shot at best as the lottery housing stock in Harlem has also been decreasing over the years.

The irony is when Harlem was affordable, many of the people who could financially afford to buy a home wanted nothing to do with Harlem and moved

out. Thinking it would be a bad investment to buy in a community that was run down, with low property value, and there would be little return on their investment. They wanted to live in a safer environment and thought that moving farther out of the inner city they would create a better home and raise the standard of living for their family.

Most of the banks also had ‘red lined’ much of Harlem to such an extent that those who had the foresight of seeing the value of the property in Harlem could barely find a bank to approve their mortgage. Plus, only a few people really understood the advantages of homeownership especially the tax benefits and the creating of wealth through building up the equity in

the home.

Now that Harlem has become an attractive community everyone wants to purchase a home in the area. It is ironic because many people born in Harlem, who have lived in Harlem all their lives, worked in Harlem, have suffered through all the plight, and unpleasantness are unable to buy because of the high prices.

But if you were set on purchasing a home in Harlem do not despair. Despite the high prices there are still some available affordable properties in the community. The most affordable units are the Housing Development Fund Corporation (HDFC) coops. These units are reasonably priced and provide an excellent opportunity to create equity to make a larger purchase. Most local real estate brokers will have a listing of available units.

THE REAL McCoy: Mechanical Engineer Inventor

“T

he real McCoy” is an idiom and metaphor used to mean the real thing or the genuine article.

Elijah McCoy was born to George and Mildred Goins McCoy on May 2, 1844, in Colchester, Canada. His parents were fugitive slaves who made their escape from Kentucky to Canada by way of the Underground Railroad.

Slavery had been abolished in Canada which was part of the British Empire in 1833. Elijah’s father joined the British forces in a rebellion and because of his loyal service was granted 160 acres of farmland.

At a young age, Elijah showed interest in machinery and tools. His parents supported this interest and allowed him to study abroad. Elijah

was 15 when he travelled to Edinburg, Scotland for an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, receiving certification as a master mechanic and engineer.

After the Civil War, the McCoy family returned to the United States, settling in Michigan. When Elijah came home to Michigan to seek work, he was met with disappointment.

Skilled professional positions were not available to African Americans. McCoy’s training and qualifications were not acceptable in the United States

due to racial barriers.

This led Elijah to become an oiler and locomotive fireman for the Michigan Central Railroad Company. His primary responsibilities were in maintaining bearings, axles, moving engine parts and refueling of the trains. Work as a fireman was a far cry from engineering. The physically demanding job consisted of shoveling coal into the firebox at the rate of two tons per hour. As an oiler, he would walk around the locomotive lubricating moving parts us-

ing a handheld oil can during frequent stops. Though the job was considered manual labor, it was this line of work that opened the way for McCoy’s first major invention.

Through his extensive engineering training and experience, he discovered a solution for engines that too frequently became overheated with lubrication problems. After studying the inefficiencies and time-consuming mechanisms in the system of oiling, McCoy invented a method of automating the task.

His invention of a steam lubricator cup made use of steam pressure to squirt oil when needed. His patent in 1872 answered a profound need for the railroads.

Versions of this lubricator cup became standard components on many types of heavy machinery on railways of the

West, on Great Lakes steamships, and even on transatlantic liners. Additionally, McCoy’s device not only improved train systems; it was used in oil-drilling and mining equipment as well as in construction and factory tools.

In 1882, McCoy left the Michigan Central Railroad Company and moved to Detroit. He worked as an industrial consultant, assisting the Detroit Lubricator Company and other firms.

When other inventors tried to steal McCoy’s original idea and sell their own versions of the lubricator, companies were not fooled. They insisted on the authentic lubricator, demanding it by using the term “the real McCoy” on invoices.

Although McCoy’s achievements were recognized in his own time, his name did not appear on many of the

products that he devised, receiving nearly 60 patents over the course of his life. Often due to lack of capital, McCoy would assign his patent rights to his investors, who put their name on his inventions. In 1920, he opened his first manufacturing firm utilizing his own name.

Elijah McCoy died in Michigan on October 10, 1929.

The lubricator he invented has served as his legacy throughout the world. Perfection Personified: National CARES Mentoring Virtual Gala

lack elegance prevailed at the 6th annual National CARES Mentoring Movement “For the Love of Our Children” virtual gala celebration of hope and transformation which simultaneously celebrated its Founder Susan L. Taylor’s 75th turn around the sun on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 7:30 P.M. The event took place in Taylor’s opulent home which opened up into a spacious vestibule where she was greeted with a kiss from her husband Khephra Burns who served as executive producer and writer of the evening’s elegant program.

Taylor, who looked ethereal in designer and educator Terrence Eldridge’s dazzling ice silver robe ensemble then sat in a plush blue tufted chair befitting royalty while Gary Taylor’s soulful song “Lovin’ My People” permeated the place. After welcoming everyone in her inimitable style with grace and purpose the program started with a snap of her finger which transitioned her into a sleek dress with purple hues. Just like that move, the event was magical!

Attendance was free but pre-registration was required.

Following a stunning saluta-

tion from Rose Jackson Flenorl, Manager, FedEx Global Citizenship, who praised Taylor for her exemplary work and “power of love mandate,” the virtual gathering continued.

“For the Love of Our Children” was filled with anecdotal stories about the important work of CARES. While ELC’s pulsating music by John Blake, Jr. filled the air, viewers were treated to a beautiful montage of CARES’ past events, its children and teachers. The elaborate footage celebrated the power of love and filled our hearts with promise of better days to come as Taylor spoke eloquently about the “inequities that have derailed the journey of people of color.” The event featured Taylor’s staunch supporters Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, Maxwell, and Danny Glover, who honored her for the invaluable work CARES is doing in our Black communities by helping to raise money for the CARES’ program and support the invaluable work CARES is doing in our Black communities.

During the poignant pro-

gram Winfrey read Maya Angelou’s “The Pledge to Our Youth” poem -- which was inspired by Taylor -- before empowering the crowd to get involved in mentoring.

“I’m here tonight celebrating [Susan’s] 75th birthday and the honor that she’s brought to those 75 years as a full woman and crusading warrior for our children,” Winfrey said. The fact that you, Susan, understood the roots of trauma and adversity embedded in the culture, preventing our children from moving forward. And then you set out to build on resilience and healing in our community is you offering yourself to service to God’s calling, and I know there’s no higher offering that you can give.”

Keys performed her single “Underdog,” and later, she and Maxwell capped off the evening by performing Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” song. Taylor shared her birthday wish for everyone to “Live your life with courage and faith!”

Stacey Abrams, Black Lives Matter are Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

oth Stacey Abrams and the Black Lives Matter movement have been nominated to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

The nominations represent an opportunity for either Abrams or Black Lives matter to win over even more support around the globe should they win.

The Nobel Prizes have been given out since 1901 and were started by Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel. Prizes are given out for distinguished work in Chemistry, Physics, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature.

There have been many controversies around the

Peace Prize and a win by Abrams or the Black Lives Matter would likely extend the line of controversies.

Past winners have included Martin Luther King, Jr. (1964), Nelson Mandela (1993), President Barack Obama (2009), Kofi Annan (2001) and Jimmy Carter (2002).

“Stacey Abrams political activist, voter registration & voting rights advocate has set a national standard for democracy.

Her political activism has resulted in a nomination for a Nobel Prize. She deserves it & would become an even bigger voting rights, VR & democracy champion,” wrote the Rev.

The news of the Abrams nomination arrived on the same day that Georgia Republicans launched a “Stop Stacey” group. The group was created to support current Georgia Governor Brian Kemp in his expected re-match against Democrat Stacey Abrams. The race will be in 2022.

The defeat of former U.S. Senator Kelly Loeffler to Rev. Raphael Warnock demonstrated the strength of the Black vote in Georgia. even before Abrams announced whether she’ll run again, a sign of deep concern among Republicans about the threat she

4 Ways Black Women Can Prioritize Self-Care for Improved Heart Health (Statepoint)

H

igh blood pressure -- the leading risk factor for heart attack and stroke -- continues to disproportionately affect communities of color. Addressing this health inequity is especially important right now, as people with hypertension and serious heart conditions are at an increased risk for more severe outcomes if they acquire COVID-19.

According to the American Heart Association, the prevalence of high blood pressure among Black adults in the U.S. is among the highest in the world, with the prevalence of high blood pressure in Black women nearly 40 percent higher than white women in the U.S. While many long-stand-

ing inequities and stressors produced by structural racism have created and continue to exacerbate these conditions, there are steps individuals can take to prioritize self-care for improved blood pressure.

This is why the Amer-

ican Medical Association (AMA), the AMA Foundation, Association of Black Cardiologists, American Heart Association, Minority Health Institute and National Medical Association have launched the “Release the Pressure” campaign

with ESSENCE. The campaign is aimed at partnering with Black women to help improve their heart health and be part of a movement for healthy blood pressure, with a shared goal of engaging more than 300,000 Black women.

As part of the campaign, the AMA and this coalition of national health care organizations encourages Black women to take a pledge to be part of a healthy blood pressure movement at ReleaseThePressure.org. Specifically, the pledge encourages Black women to take the following four steps: 1. Set a blood pressure goal: Schedule an appointment with your physician or other health care professional, in-person or virtually, to work in partnership on understanding your blood pressure numbers and knowing your goal for optimal blood pressure.

2. Monitor blood pressure numbers at home: Once you learn your blood pressure numbers, take and keep regular records of your blood pressure.

3. Activate a personalized wellness plan: Identify specific goals for fitness and heart healthy eating and connect virtually with family members and friends from your “squad” to keep you on track.

4. Make regular checkins with your “squad”: Lean on your family and friends to help you achieve your heart health goals by checking in with them on a daily basis.

CELBRATING BLACK HISTORY: The Wilmington Ten, Fifty Years Later

ilmington, North Carolina, is known today for its vibrant riverfront with three colorful island beaches and southern hospitality, major contributors to the port city’s bustling tourism.

However, Wilmington’s past paints a picture of a much different city.

While things may be different in today’s Wilmington.

It was not that long ago that Wilmington, like too many other southern cities, still condoned the region’s ugly racist culture and practices.

More than a century after America’s Civil War had ended, on Feb. 1, 1971, a young minister named Benjamin Franklin Chavis, Jr., arrived in the city.

Chavis was sent to Wilmington by the United Church of Christ from their Commission on Racial Justice. A local pastor of a Black Church, Rev. Eugene Templeton, requested help from the United Church of Christ.

Chavis, a disciple of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., helped students organize a more effective boycott, targeted against White high school administrators who were resisting the desegregation of their schools and classrooms and who also refused demands to honor Dr. King, who was assassinated just three years earlier.

One year after King’s murder, the city had just three high schools. Two of them, New Hanover and Hoggard were all-White, and the third, Williston Industrial High School, was reserved for the city’s Black high schoolers. Williston was a source of community pride and was ranked among the best high schools in North Carolina —

Black or White.

Following federally mandated school desegregation in 1969, local administrators changed the status of Williston Industrial High School from a high school to a junior high school. Williston’s Black students and teachers would be reassigned to New Hanover and Hoggard.

However, when they arrived at their new schools, African Americans endured name-calling, racially motivated physical attacks and other threats. Incidents of rioting and arson, in protest of the decision to integrate, occurred almost daily.

In response to tensions, members of a Ku Klux Klan chapter and other white supremacist groups began patrolling the streets. They hung an effigy of the White superintendent of the schools and cut his phone lines. Street violence broke out between them and Black men who were Viet Nam veterans. Students attempted to boycott the high schools in January of 1971.

Chavis and a group that became known as the Wilmington Ten, argued for Black history courses, respect for King and all Black people and equality.

Tensions continued to mount, with the Ku Klux Klan and other White supremacists firebombing buildings and shooting at Black students.

One incident in particular would become a defining event in this period of Wilmington’s history: The firebombing of Mike’s Grocery Store, a White-owned business in the heart of Wilmington’s Black community.

On Feb. 6, during an uncharacteristically frigid night for a southern city like

Wilmington, the popular neighborhood grocery was firebombed. As police and firefighters arrived on the scene, gun fire could be heard above the siren squeals and activity.

Firefighters responding to the fire, alleged that they were shot at from the roof of the nearby Gregory Congregational Church. Chavis and several students had been meeting at the church. Sniper fire, which was intended for the Wilmington Ten’s members, struck a police officer.

As the gun fire continued, one of the Wilmington Ten, Marvin “Chilly” Patrick, was shot as he placed himself between the source of the sniper’s fire and Chavis, successfully preventing Chavis from being shot.

According to the February 1971 edition of “This Month in North Carolina History — The Wiliminton Ten,” the North Carolina governor called up the North Carolina National Guard, whose forces entered the church on February 8 and found it empty. The violence resulted in two deaths, six injuries, and more than $500,000 (equivalent to $3.2 million in 2019) in property damage.

Chavis and nine others, eight young Black males, who were high school students, and white female anti-pover-

ty worker, were arrested on charges of arson related to the grocery fire. Based on testimony of three young Black men (who later recanted their testimony), they were tried and convicted in state court of arson and conspiracy in connection with the firebombing of Mike’s Grocery.

At trial, all ten defendants were provided defense counsel by the United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice. However, it was later established that the prosecutors conspired against the defendants by paying witnesses to falsely identify Chavis and the other Wilmington Ten members — who were the actual targets of the White supremacists’ sniper’s fire — as arsonists, and for the subsequent assault on law enforcement officers.

Additionally, chief prosecutor Jay Stroud feigned sickness following jury selection when it became apparent that ten African Americans would be seated on the jury, leading to a mistrial. A second trial, whose jury included only two African Americans, resulted in a guilty verdict for all ten defendants.

With sentences that ranged from 15 years to 34 years, Chavis, Patrick, and the eight others were ordered to serve a combined 282

years in prison.

In 1977, Amnesty International cited the Wilmington Ten case as the first official case of political prisoners in the United States. Within a year, the London-based human-rights group declared that the Wilmington Ten were “prisoners of conscience who were not arrested for the crimes for which they were charged, but because of their political work.”

The New York Times published an article noting that Amnesty International’s declaration about the Wilmington Ten outraged some and embarrassed others – especially after Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977.

“Soon the charge was repeated and amplified by the American Ambassador to the United Nations, Andrew Young, who contended in an interview with a French newspaper that the United States harbored ‘hundreds, perhaps thousands’ of political prisoners,” The Times reported. Young added, “The Wilmington Ten, for example, are innocent.”

“Mr. Young later apologized for the remark about hundreds or thousands of political prisoners, but he still says, privately, that the charges against the Ten were

‘trumped up,’’’ noted the Times.

The Wilmington Ten spent nearly a decade in prison before federal appellate courts overturned their convictions in December 1980, citing prosecutorial misconduct.

Timothy Tyson, a North Carolina historian and visiting professor at Duke University, told CNN he was given the Wilmington Ten prosecutor’s handwritten notes before 2012 when the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), United Church of Christ and NAACP called again for pardons of innocence for the Wilmington Ten. Prior to this, the publisher of the Wilmington Journal, Mary Alice Thatch, had petitioned the NNPA to launch a national campaign for a pardon of innocence for the Wilmington Ten. “It was pretty shocking stuff,” Tyson remarked.

He said the names of at least six potential jurors had “KKK Good!!” written next to them. Next to a woman’s name, it said, “NO, she associates with Negroes.”

On the back of the legal pad, the chief prosecutor, Jay Stroud, had written the advantages and disadvantages of a mistrial, Tyson said. One of the advantages was a fresh start with a new jury.

In 2012, 40 years after they were unjustly convicted, North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue officially pardoned the Wilmington 10.

“These convictions were tainted by naked racism and represent an ugly stain on North Carolina’s criminal justice system that cannot be allowed to stand any longer,” Gov. Perdue said at the time.

“Justice demands that this stain finally be removed.”

After his death, the family moved to Chicago, where Dr. Carruthers’ mother, Sophia, went to work for the U.S. Postal Service.

M

an, you’re picky.

That’s not always a bad thing, either. You know what you want so you choose deliberately, carefully, with plenty of thought behind it. What’s right for you is right for you and you won’t take anything less. As in the new memoir “Just As I Am” by Cicely Tyson (with Michelle Burford), folks’ll just have to deal with it.

Born in New York City a few days before Christmas 1924, Cicely Tyson’s first real memory was of a place, one where her parents fought, physically and verbally, over her father’s infidelities. She was sensitive

to everything she heard in the next room as she and her brother and sister slept on a pull-out couch, and she recalled times when she tried to stop the brawling.

She was a good church-going girl then, and while her mother had ideas for Tyson’s future, young Cicely knew she wanted a life that was different than that of her mother. Though she loved “the arts.” she decided to become a hairdresser but before she could graduate from high school, Tyson became pregnant and was made to marry the baby’s father.

town when someone approached her on her lunchtime, asking her if she was a model. When she said, “no,” he told her that she should be one. Almost like in the movies, that led Tyson to a friend of a friend who signed her to an agency and there, she was spotted by someone else who knew of a movie director who hired her for her first role. He instructed Tyson to shave ten years off her age.

“Six decades would go by,” she said, “before I let the public in on what was frankly never any of their business.”

And that line should give you most of the encouragement you need to want to read “Just As

I Am.” Nobody could ever accuse the late actor Cicely Tyson of being shy.

Even so, she wrote (with Michelle Burford) that she was initially a quiet child, and this, framed by a childhood tainted by Jim Crow racism and a stormy relationship with her mother, make up the bulk of the first half of the book. Tyson also wrote of a dangerous innocence that led to early motherhood; on that, she declines to call her daughter by name, which is an interesting aspect that differs from the usual Hollywood memoir.

One other way that “Just As I Am” stands out from the usual: while Tyson namedrops here, it comes across less showy and more familiar, which is refreshing. Her lengthy – and carefully-managed, award-winning career – makes up the latter half of this book, as do tales of her loves, including the red-hot, on-again/off-again, frustrating romance with musician Miles Davis.

For fans of Cicely Tyson’s work on stage and screen, this is a thorough look at more than just that career. Biography lovers will also want to know that if you’re ready for your next book, “Just As I Am” is the one to pick.
