This past Thanksgiving there was no reason for anyone to be hungry. Manna Restaurants in Harlem is one of the restaurants who donate food for Thanksgiving..

Betty Park, owner of Manna provided hundreds of meals as part of Bethel Assembly in Harlem feast of giving meals and clothing on Thanksgiving day. Betty also distributed turkeys.

The “Giving Spirit” is certainly in the air. (see page 4).

A Christmas Carol is playing until December 8th in Harlem. According to Maria it is a heart-warming, inspiring and uplifting show for the entire family. Plan to attend.

Manna Restaurants Donates Food for Thanksgiving Meals at Bethal Gospel Assembly By:Stephanie Woods

hanks to Betty Park, owner of Manna’s Soul Food Restaurants, Bethel Gospel Assembly, founded in 1917, hosted their 9th annual Thanksgiving outreach dinner on Thanksgiving morning.

Hundreds of community residents were treated to dinner, worship and a very special clothing drive-which included personal shoppers for women and men in need. Macy’s, church members and community residents donated clothing to add a very special touch to the special day. The women, as well as the men were greeted with smiles and warm wishes while volunteers helped

with their shopping needs to ensure that the look was fitting. Betty Park of Manna’s takes pride in her 30year history of donating hundreds meals each year to those in need and also gave away hundreds of turkeys in Harlem. Mrs. Parks stated, “I’m excited each year to be able to give back and I always look forward to this day.”

Bethel Gospel Assembly is celebrating 101 years of servicing the Harlem Community and the Church’s Bishop Carlton T. Brown and his wife Pastor Lorna Brown have been organizing this event for years to help uplift the community. Bethel Gospel Assembly does more than

host an event for Thanksgiving-day, their outreach efforts include a follow up phone call or visit, checking on those who step into their house of worship.

Harlem’s famous actors and actresses were also in attendance and noted that there is no place better to be than at home giving back.

Actor Peter J. Fernandez of the TV series Luke Cage has been a member of Bethel Gospel Assembly and warmingly noted “I’ve been blessed, therefore I must give back - we’re all in this together.” Acclaimed stage and TV actor James McDaniel of NYPD Blue noted it is a tradition for him to volunteer on Thanksgiving.

“Sometimes we lose sight of what’s really important, it’s not about making it, it’s about how great we are together, so I look forward to worshiping and being able to help wherever the church needs me to be,” said McDaniel. Actress Maame Yaa Boafo of Iron Fist, took time out of her busy schedule from performing in a new play titled School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play to ensure that she was available to be of service.

Young talented church member Jayvon Russell was excited by the day’s service as well as Tristan Heath, who began volunteering at the church for school credit while attending cu-

linary school. Although he received his school credit, Tristan continues to volunteer his services at Bethel Gospel Assembly. Ministry Relations Director and personal assistant to Pastor

Brown Ruth-Ann Wynter noted the hard work the Assembly does to uplift and support the community, stating, “The church looks forward to servicing the community year-round.”

Enchanting model trains zip through a display of more than 175 New York landmarks, each re-created with bark, leaves, and other natural materials—all under the twinkling glow of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. Marvel at G-scale locomotives humming past familiar sights such as the Brooklyn Bridge and Rockefeller Center on nearly a half-mile of track. This year’s exhibition showcases Lower Manhattan—the birthplace of New York City—featuring the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and iconic skyscrapers sharing the spotlight among old and new favorites. Making their debut this year are One World Trade Center and the historic Battery Maritime Building along with two vintage ferry boats.

Congresswoman Waters Recognizes World AIDS Day 2018

ecember 1 has been declared “World AIDS Day.” “On World AIDS Day, we unite in solidarity worldwide in the fight against HIV/ AIDS. We show support for people living with the disease and commemorate those who have died. We stand together to raise awareness about the epidemic so we can prevent further spread of the virus and give hope to the 1.1 million Americans and the 36.9 million women, men and children worldwide who are living with HIV/AIDS. “Throughout my career, I have been a strong advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention and treatment. I worked with local organizations and community leaders to raise funds for local minority HIV/AIDS initiatives in Los Angeles and introduced legislation to address the HIV/ AIDS epidemic among African Americans in the California State Assembly. As a Member of the U.S. Congress, I spearheaded the establishment of the Minority

AIDS Initiative, which has significantly expanded HIV/AIDS prevention, screening, and treatment efforts among racial and ethnic minorities and reduced the tragic AIDS disparities affecting minority communities in the United States. I am pleased to report that funding for the Minority AIDS Initiative has increased from the initial appropriation of $156 million in fiscal year 1999 to more than $400 million per year today.

“However, we still face unprecedented challenges in our struggle against HIV/ AIDS. For the past two years, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans have debated proposals to slash funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment

efforts and take health insurance away from millions of Americans, including those who are living with HIV/AIDS and other pre-existing conditions.

Furthermore, after implementing an unconscionable policy of family separation, which snatched more than 2,500 children from the arms of their parents, the Trump administration shifted millions of dollars in funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program in order to fund housing and care for migrant children, many of whom they have failed to reunite with their parents. The administration also announced further cuts to programs that benefit people living with HIV/ AIDS, including: $3.8 million from HIV pro-

grams at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), $9.8 million from Medicare and Medicaid program operations, $2.2 million from maternal and child health programs, and $87.3 million overall from the National Institutes of Health. Americans living with HIV/ AIDS deserve better.[3] “On World AIDS Day 2018, we must confront the challenges we face, and we must resist all attempts to abandon the struggle against this terrible disease. We must fight to protect Obamacare, which ensures that people living with HIV/AIDS and other pre-existing conditions can obtain health coverage. We must fight to stop budget cuts to all of the federal programs serving people affected by HIV/ AIDS. We must expand research, prevention, screening and treatment efforts, and we must fight to make sure all Americans living with HIV/AIDS receive the care and treatment they need and deserve.”

It was 125 years ago this December that Dvorak premiered at Carnegie Hall several of his works, including the Symphony “from the New World.” On this occasion, the American String Quartet, bass-baritone Simon Estes, pianist Tian Jiang and many other artists will perform works

by Dvorak, by his close friend Johannes Brahms, and by Harry Burleigh, including African American Spirituals.

The Foundation, founded in 2011, has worked to introduce New York City youth to Classical culture through music programs designed to introduce new audiences to the humanity of the Classical artist, often seen as a distant, unapproachable “genius figure.” This concert is a follow up to the June 2017 concert the Foundation sponsored to commemorate

I have seen a few of CTH productions – Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, The Three Musketeers and Antigone – and each time I am amazed at the very original, unique and masterful way Mr. Jones revisits classical works and turns them into powerful, modern current-events pieces, still maintaining their origi-

nal integrity and identity. Each time I think: “this should be on Broadway”.

“We are living in a time of heightened anxiety, where critical thinking is losing out to those who criticize thinking. Regardless of any issue, I believe progress begins with a conversation. My contribution to that conversation, is to bring people together, to see great theater with the hope that

people will see that we all are far more alike than different.

Harlem has great treasures, and I think art is a way to preserve them” he said and added :“We are on the precipice of the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance. We wanted to show how a community is healed, one family at a time and how ordinary people can do extraordinary things to help one another receive the gift of love at Christmas time”.

I then asked what CTH needs to secure and maintain itself and support young artists

serving such a culturally diverse public.

“We need funding commensurate with the work we are providing. I will put what we’ve done since the financial crisis of ‘08-’09 up against any arts organization on both the artistic and commerce side. We’ve played by the rules, retired $400K of debt and are cultural custodians whose focus has been in the community in which it was founded” He answered and continued “We need a permanent space or be in residence in a space to elevate our work in a structured and measured way.

We are proud of how resourceful we’ve been with very few resources. It’s time for us to be more than a squeaky wheel - and hopefully, if we’ve earned it, the community will be the chorus that we need that insists that we are a treasure worth preserving”

n November 29, the College of New Rochelle (CNR) celebrated the expansion of its Rosa Parks Campus to its new location at 313 W. 125th Street, where they moved in January from operating out of the Studio Museum of Harlem since 1987.

This was also a moment to honor the 63rd anniversary of Parks fearless stand for civil rights that led to the desegregation of public transportation in Montgomery, Alabama.

“Rosa Parks was a Civil Rights icon whose simple act of civil disobedience demonstrated to the world how the actions of one person can change the course of history. As a College Community, we are so proud to celebrate this true heroine and this wonderful new campus

that bears her name,” said CNR President William Latimer. He also acknowledged was Journalist and CNR Professor Herb Boyd, who was in attendance, for his important role in asking Rosa Parks for the honor of naming the campus after her.

Ruth Hassell-Thompson,

Special Adviser for Policy and Community Affairs of New York State Homes and Community Renewal, read a letter written by Governor Andrew Cuomo, recognizing CNR for “its continuing, steadfast dedication to Harlem.” She also spoke of the important role education has

as a means of ending mass incarceration, which she has been dedicated to reforming both as an advocate for more educational opportunities within state prisons and the ‘raise the age’ law which no longer automatically charges all 16-year-olds as adults.

Assemblywoman Inez Dickenson spoke about the importance of education for the Black community, which has faced educational inequality in this country and recognized the role CNR has played in helping address this issue. “Over the years the College of New Rochelle has become synonymous with hope for those breaking away from poverty.”

Following speeches, Director of the Rosa Parks Campus Andrew Baker helped facilitate a tour around the classrooms.

“When we redesigned the campus, we put teaching and learning at the front,” he said, noting both technological advancements such as Wi-Fi and multimedia display equipment in each classroom, as well as a redeveloped day-program for learners who work evening jobs. Baker also recognized the student population at the Rosa Parks Campus as unique for its entrepreneurial streak: “We have many students who have

their own businesses.”

The School of Nursing and Healthcare Professionals was added to the campus during its move in January with a cohort of 40 students. It is the inaugural school to be affiliated with the Watson Caring Science Institute (WCSI) based in Colorado with the aim “...to inform our notion of quality care and healing environments.” Dean of the School of Nursing Debra A. Simons noted the inclusion of holistic modalities taught be WCSI such as hand massage, meditation and aromatherapy will be a powerful and unique addition to training nurses as healers at CNR. “We are re-patterning the field of nursing in how we provide care,” said Simons.

Students, like Shaquira Smith, were another important presence at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Smith works as a dental assistant while she finishes her Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts with a focus on Communications. She spoke of cultural relevancy at the Harlem campus as it is unique to other educational institutions she’s attended, “What made me love this school is the African American vibe. They give Black Studies classes that teach us our history.” Smith also has had positive experiences with her professors: “Teachers here will work with you if you don’t understand something. They don’t leave us hanging.”

How Body Imbalance Is The Tipping Point For Many Orthopedic Problems

W

e’ve all lost our balance – slipping on ice, getting knocked down in a sport, tripping over a toy, or perhaps from feeling dizzy.

But sometimes body imbalance is less obvious, lurking inside while we move freely about, and the causes may indicate long-term problems if left unresolved.

It’s been estimated that over 30 million Americans have some type of balance disorder. There are various ways to test for it, and Dr. Victor Romano, an orthopedist, says doing so increases the chances of finding the source of the problem and determining non-surgical solutions.

“When your body is out of balance, you will begin to experience a myriad of problems,” says Romano (www.romanomd.com), author of Finding The Source: Maximizing Your Results – With and Without Orthopaedic Surgery. “A loss of balance indicates something is wrong internally. It’s a clue to look further.”

Dr. Romano, who uses a type of balance and reflex testing called Autonomic Motor Nerve Reflex Testing (AMNRT), breaks down what a loss of balance can mean in relation to the health of the body’s neuromuscular systems: The peripheral ner-

vous system. This includes the nerves to the hands, feet, elbows, ribs, jaw and pelvis. “If your peripheral nervous system is off, then your balance will be off when you close your eyes or look at a dark color,” Dr. Romano says. “Patients are usually amazed when I’m able to push them off-balance.”

Once when he was a football team physician and administered balance testing, Dr. Romano was able to knock players much bigger than himself off-balance.

The central nervous system. This involves the nerves to the neck and back. Dr. Romano

checks patients’ balance first with their eyes open, then closed, to test the integrity of their peripheral nervous system. Then he tests their central nervous system by checking their balance using some head movements. “If you lose your balance when you turn your head to the left or right, or when you nod your head up and down, then your central nervous system is off,” he says.

“There’s a problem with either the neck, upper or lower back, or sacroiliac joint, near the base of your spine. Usually, they hadn’t previously thought they had any weakness.”

Pelvic alignment. If

your pelvis is out of alignment or “tilted,” Dr. Romano says that means one side of your body will be weaker than the other. “All functional movement begins at the core,” he says. “Weaknesses of the core predispose someone to injuries in other areas of the body.

The core muscles align the spine, ribs and pelvis, stabilizing the body. But while people with a pelvic tilt often go about their day normally, it leads to sideto-side instability.”

“Finding the source of a problem and of pain can help cure it using non-surgical means,” Dr. Romano says. “Often it starts with something as simple as

testing your balance.”

Of all the kids at Mary Fitzgerald Orphanage, Plum was the smallest and the other kids never let her forget it.
