Happy Holidays, Happy New Year! I will be celebrating Kwanzaa with my family in Savannah, Ga.. Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26th though January 1. It is the African-American celebration of family, community and culture created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, an activist-scholar and educator. Kwanzaa is based on seven principles - Umoja (Unity); Kujichagulia (Self determination); Ijima (Collective Work and Responsibility); Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics); Nia (Purpose); Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).

There is a Kwanzaa celebration in New York at the Museum of Natural History this upcoming Saturday, December 28th.

Looking for a Healthy New Year’s Resolution? Don’t Overlook Your Eyes (Statepoint)

n December 17, 2019, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., AT&T and Chess in the Schools co-hosted the Bronx Borough President’s Annual Chess Challenge at the Bronx County Building’s Veterans’ Memorial Hall.

More than 300 students from all over The Bronx participated in the tournament, which featured chess aficionados from grades 3-8 testing their skills against one another. Winners in each division were presented awards by Borough President Diaz, AT&T President-Northern Region Marissa Shorenstein, and Chess in the Schools President & CEO Debbie Eastburn at the event’s conclusion.

2020 Interior Design Trends on the Horizon (Statepoint)

he beginning of the new year is a natural time to think about refreshing the look of your home, and in 2020, “cozy” and “warm” are trending keywords for interior design, according to experts, with luxurious textiles, inviting color palettes, and warm mixed metals found across all design styles.

While a maximalism approach is on the horizon, clean and modern design schemes continue to reign.

“I think it is time that that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face, and I want them

The 26-year-old from Tsolo, South Africa, speaks English and Isixhosa.

Tunzi’s official biography notes that she’s a passionate activist and engaged in the fight against gender-based violence.

Tunzi has devoted her social media campaign to changing the narrative around gender stereotypes, and she said she’s a proud advocate for natural beauty.

Guest speakers included attorney Jeanna Hussey and Attahjundwe Obiajulu, a financial planner with Lincoln Financial.

Speaking on why this subject was of particular importance to her, Dr. Maxwell said: “I’m 93 years old and I need to make plans for health as I age and live longer.”

The discussion helped many of those in attendance realize that they were not prepared for long term health care. Like many

others, the realities of assisted living can create not only a financial burden but an emotional one that families struggle with, due to a lack of planning. This topic is of specific importance to women because they often outlive males.

“We’re living longer now.

The family network may no longer be able to support the elders.

Institutional care is the next option. As a result of that, people need to prepare themselves for institutional care” explained Ms. Hussey. “You need to educate your children as to what you want to be done when you become incapacitated. Number two, you need to plan for the distribution of your assets. Assets

Those in attendance realized, that by working with a financial planner, and an attorney, it is possible to implement term health care options that will not impact their retirement funds and allow them to experience their golden years, with less stress.

by African American families — until there is a crisis.

The discussion was sponsored by The Greater New York Chapter, Links Inc, Community Partnership and The Abyssinian Baptist Church Golden Life Ministry and moderated by Michelle D. Stent, Esq. co-chair of the GNY Links Health & Human

Many African Americans have set aside finances for retirement, and have health insurance that will provide for them as seniors. However, many do not realize that their savings may be at risk in the event that they need private health care. Speaking on the issue of long term health care cost, Mr. Obiajulu said: “If someone has to have a caregiver, to come into the house for a month, you’re looking at approximately, three thousand dollars.”

It’s great when you’re together, reading stories, laughing, watching TV, or making cookies. Big family or small one, it’s yours and it’s good no matter whether you look alike or, as in the new book “The One and Only Wolfgang” by Steve Greig & Mary Rand Hess, illustrated by Nadja Sarell, your family is just different.

Meet the Wolfgang: nine dogs, a chicken, “an

old bossy pig” and one bunny. They all live together in one big house because, once upon a time, nobody wanted any of them. It was pretty sad then, but they’re all very happy now.

They guard the house together, starting with Engelbert – who’s smaller thanBetty the chicken – to Betty herself. They play together and sleep together, travel together and eat together.

If you are a member of a big family, it means having to “practice sharing” andyou have to learn to get along. It’s that way, even when you don’t want to be nice, whether

you’re a pig named Bikini or a little tiny dog with great big ears! You have to know when it’s okay to get into a bit of trouble together, and when you need to give one another space. There are times when you can have fun with your family, and times when you have to do things you really, really don’t want to do because it’s what everyone else wants.

You’ll always find someone to nap with when you have a big family (and some of them might be dogs!). There’ll always be someone who wants to go with you on walks or trips. It won’t

matter if some of you are older than others, or someone can’t see quite well, or if someone is bigger or faster or more able than someone else.

It never matters if everybody looks a little different than the others in the family because “With family, being different is okay.”

In more ways than one, “The One & Only Wolfgang” is a super-cute book.

Kids who love animals will get a big kick out of this story because of the wide variety of furry critters in it and because real photos of those animals are placed inside color-

ful illustrations by Nadja Sarell. It’s like a cartoon that’s been spliced into a live-action video.

The other half of the goodness here comes purely from the narrative.
