The COVID-19 Pandemic closed business, schools, etc and put us in our residents and have had us masked up for almost 6 months now, then the Police Abuse which caused the “Black Lives Matter” movement and rallies depressed us and inspired us as the world joined in. Now “ Hurricane Isaias” has come though and left more than 2 million without power in the midst of the hot summer days. WOW! How much more can we take. 2020 will certainly be a year we remember.

PONDER THIS! 2020 is a Mix of Hot Mess

I

know you have heard it said, “We are all in the same boat.” That statement causes me to shake my head wondering what they mean. If I apply some good sense to those words, the response must be, “We are all in the same mess.” Some folks have a yacht, while others do not have a raft to hold them afloat. I must believe; nobody wants to be impoverished and nobody is foolish enough to think they can run on empty.

Surviving and thriving are not the same across the board.

We can agree that COVID-19 hit everybody hard in health, housing, employment, business, psychologically and emo-

tionally, but certainly not in the same way. The haves and the have nots may share the same trauma of unexpected deaths due to the virus, but not the same drama of trying to make it on a dime.

January 2020 seemed like just another entry into a new year. Out of the blue, shock waves catapulted our new year resolutions into how to handle an invasion of an

unseen enemy. We started out bumping elbows and minimizing hugs and kisses, hoping that would win the battle. The infectious COVID war took hold, we were ordered to stay home and shut down.

We have moved from confusion to crisis to chaos and now head on into calamity under the leadership of a president who comes up out of an imaginary tunnel when he chooses, rambling on with trivial nonsense, boosting his ego by way of arrogance and insult, barely offering any assistance when we need it the most.

If anyone is thinking the 2020 mess is subsiding, stay ready for what is coming down the pipeline already in discussion.

First, they wanted more time for the Census, now rushing to an early end in the count that could hinder the numbers needed in communities for budgets and fair political representation in government. A slowdown in postal operations will delay mail in ballots and voting, in addition to dangerously late delivery of medical supplies and social security checks. And there’s more, unemployment remains over the roof. Will there be additional help coming, $600, no; $400, maybe.

How long will it take to resolve that insensitivity?

Parents shiver at the thought of their children stepping into unsafe school buildings and teachers fear what the

children will spread to them and their families if they return.

In the new “abnormal” waters we tread from moment to moment, the media is questioning anyone they can to ask who former Vice President Biden will select as his vice president. The decision on a female vice president has been delegated. A black or white woman remains his choice. Does race supersede experience?

At the top of this week, Biden announced Senator Kamala Harris is the nominee for Vice President of the United States. It is a proud day for Black women and the country as a whole. Touché!

Nothing must hold us back from climbing out

of the pit of discontentment, disorder and various degrees of disgust that is exhibited for the world to see from the current resident of the house the slaves built. As we sift our way through all the present messiness, we must be about getting this generation registered and everybody’s vote, young and old, to the polls or the post office.

BP DIAZ, BRONX ELECTEDS DISTRIBUTE FOOD AND PPE AT RIVER PARK TOWERS

n Friday, August 7, 2020, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. hosted an event to distribute food and personal protective equipment at River Park Towers at 55 Richman Plaza in The Bronx.

Borough President Diaz hosted the event with New York City Council Member Vanessa Gibson and New York State Assembly Member Latoya Joyner in partnership with Empire Bluecross Blueshield. They distributed thousands of pieces of personal protective equipment such as face masks and hand sanitizer.

Department of Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Gar-

cia and the Food Policy Team joined the event to give out boxes of fresh groceries to River Park Towers residents.

“COVID-19 has affected so many families in The Bronx but thanks to our collective adherence to public health strategies like wearing masks, we have been able to ‘flatten the curve’ and sustain lower infection rates,”” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “Today we made it easier for hundreds of Bronxites to protect themselves by providing them with masks and other vital resources.

Thank you to everyone who partnered with us today to organize this event and to protect our communities

from COVID-19.”

“For far too long, the residents at Riverpark Towers have been battling the novel Coronavirus with limited resources. Its location leaves them removed from many resources within the South Bronx. Thanks to the partnership between Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Assembly Member Latoya Joyner, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, and my office, these residents will receive the personal protective equipment such as face masks and hand sanitizers to overcome COVID-19. Spiritually Speaking… Don’t Throw Your Own Pity Party and Then Attend

hile I was trying to remember where I heard or read about the concept of letting your hate for someone else control your life, I realized that maybe someone needed to read about it. So, here it is.

Now I am not talking about just not liking someone. I am talking about not being able to control your emotions when it comes to a particular person.

I mean having complete and utter disdain for another human being, so much so, that even when you don’t want to think about them, you can’t help yourself. That person occupies too much of your mental space and saps your waking time and energy.

Look here. If you can’t stand someone, can’t get along with someone, are still hurt after someone left you long ago, you really need to let it go. I guess it exemplifies a very practical approach to “Let go and let God.” The premise is simple enough.

Without forgiveness in your heart, you are forever bound and chained to that

which you despise most, are fearful of and have been seriously hurt by.

Have you ever been around someone who continues to relive a past relationship, a broken heart, wrongful termination, missed opportunity or a personal slight, over and over and over again? That’s all they talk about.

When they see something or hear something that reminds them of that someone or that thing, you know what’s coming. And they expect you to join them in the pity party they’ve thrown for themselves. In fact, it’s the same one they threw yesterday and the day before and you know it’s the one they’ll throw tomorrow. Maybe you’ve attended a pity party or two, even thrown on for yourself.

Without forgiveness in your heart and mind and your spirit, you’re essentially doomed to be shackled to what scarred you in the first place. My bible says the truth shall set you free. And the truth is, you better let that madness go, so you can live a

life of freedom.

You can never be the person God wants you to be, if you continue to let these people and events and circumstances have that kind of power over you. That’s right, power! Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, you are letting your thoughts rule your behavior, your attitude and your outlook. That’s too much power to give to anyone or anything who is so negative to who you are in the eyes of God. It’s a mind game and it’s your mind. Paul says, “Be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” Romans 12:2.

Let God reshape your thinking into what you can be instead of what they you say are not.

The truth is God can’t or won’t even deal with you until you comply with the rule of

forgiveness. He says, “If you come to the altar with your gift and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift and go be reconciled with your brother; then come and offer your gift.” Matthew 5:23. You got to let it go. You have to in order to claim your freedom, your peace.

Until you do, you can’t receive all that God has for you.

My point is that the process begins from within. It takes intestinal fortitude to forgive one’s enemies in the face of their attacks, old and new. But you must. I know you can.

Just remember this. When you do let go and let God, “It is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” He knows it’s in you because He put it there. May God bless and keep you always.

Are You Eligible for This COVID-19 Study?

A

new COVID-19 study is currently enrolling patients, and researchers believe it has the potential to change the course of the virus around the world.

The study is examining the effects of Colchicine, a widely available and inexpensive anti-inflammatory drug on one of the most common, and most debilitating side effects of SARS-CoV-2–acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

ARDS is caused by an intense inflammatory response that results in what’s called a cytokine storm. Cytokines are molecules that signal to inflammatory cells that there’s a problem within the body that needs their attention. Any normal immune response involves cytokines. In a cytokine storm however, they’re released in larger numbers than neces-

sary, resulting in an immune response out of proportion to the threat at hand, whereby immune cells attack healthy tissues.

Cytokine storms in COVID-19 are common and potentially do more damage than the virus itself, causing some patients to develop pneumonia or ARDS, which are life-threatening lung conditions. Many such patients require admission to ICU wards to be provided with respiratory support via mechanical ventilation.

One research team believes they may have the solution, however. Dr. Jean-Claude Tardif, director of the Research Centre at Montreal Heart Institute, professor of medicine at the University of Montreal, and primary investigator of the study, believes that these cytokine storms seen in COVID-19 patients are manufactured by

a tiny inflammatory cell part, or organelle, called inflammasome. Colchicine, targets that one tiny organelle.

“More than 10 years ago, it was shown that the most closely related virus to SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, is Sars-CoV-1.

That’s the virus that caused SARS caused 15 years ago,” says Dr. Tardif. “It's very close to SARS CoV-2 and it was shown in this very elegant paper that SARS CoV-1 directly activates inflammasome.”

Dr. Tardif and his team are currently enrolling patients with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis for a Colchicine study. If his hypothesis is correct, it could change the way COVID-19 is treated globally.

Colchicine is a widely available, inexpensive drug that has already been in use for years in the treatment of conditions like gout, familial Mediterranean

fever (FMF) and viral pericarditis. The side effect profile is well-known and side effects are rare.

The groundbreaking study is called COLCORONA. Like most studies, patients are assigned either a course of the study medication or a placebo for 30 days. However, this study is unique as it is contact-less, helping protect health care workers and the population at-large from unnecessary risk of virus exposure.

To enroll, patients can call the hotline to speak with a dedicated healthcare professional who will explain the study and verify their eligibility, as well as to receive and sign the informed consent document. The study medication is then delivered to the patient’s door within four hours and the patient is remotely followed for 30 days.

n order to stave off the potential loss of billions in federal aid for critical programs as well as the loss of up to two congressional seats in the midst of the worst economic crisis in a century, New York City is launching the #GetCountedNYC Census Week of Action to mobilize all households to respond to the census in New York City, which has just a 53.8% self-response rate as of July 24.

From July 27 - August 2, NYC Census 2020 and our partners are planning a week of activities citywide to mobilize New Yorkers to self-respond to the 2020 Census. 500 New Yorkers have already signed up to volunteer and New Yorkers can continue to join the effort at nyc.gov/censusweek.

Disney Dreamers Academy to Host Virtual Event for 2020 Participants 100 teens selected for 2020 Disney Dreamers Academy will experience the exclusive online program this fall

T

he immersive, transformational Disney Dreamers Academy will take place virtually this fall and, for the first time in its history, offer career shadow externships for all 100 members of the class.

Just like past Disney Dreamers Academy events, the virtual experience will deliver life lessons and tools such as effective communication techniques, leadership skills and networking strategies. This version of the program will do so with selfpaced workshops, interactive video-conferencing sessions, networking opportunities and more, led by top speakers and industry professionals.

Following the virtual experience, all 100 students will be placed into career shadowing externships based on their dream professions

so they can receive personal insight and advice from mentors.

The announcement of this new Disney Dreamers Academy experience was made Aug. 5, 2020, at the virtual NABJ/NAHJ convention by Tracey D. Powell, Disney Signature Experiences vice president and Disney Dreamers Academy executive champion. The original, in-person 2020 Disney Dreamers Academy program was shortened earlier this year due to the temporary closure of Walt Disney World Resort.

“We were disappointed to have to cut this year’s event short due to the pandemic, and we knew we had to create something extra special for this outstanding group of high school students,” said Powell. “We expect to deliver an immersive, informative

and inspirational experience that will impact these Disney Dreamers just as the traditional program has done for more than a decade.”

The program, now in its 13th year, is a part of Walt Disney World’s commitment to helping the next generation of young people by inspiring them at a critical time in their development. Attorney General Letitia James Sues One of the Nation's Largest Egg Producers for Price Gouging During the Coronavirus Pandemic

ew York Attorney General Letitia James today filed a lawsuit against Hillandale Farms, one of the country’s largest producers and wholesale distributors of eggs, for illegally gouging the prices of eggs during the coronavirus pandemic. In March and April 2020, Hillandale allegedly gouged the prices of more than four million cartons of eggs sold to major grocery store chains, U.S. military facilities, and wholesale food distributors throughout the state, charging New York customers up to four times the pre-pandemic price for one carton of eggs. During those two months — the height of the pandemic in New York — Hillandale made an estimated $4 million from unlawfully increasing the price of these eggs, which were often sold in grocery stores located in low-income communities. The lawsuit seeks restitution from Hillandale for those consumers who were forced to pay unlawfully high prices for this essential food item.

The Attorney General’s Office learned of Hillandale’s price gouging after receiving complaints from consumers about the high prices of eggs at grocery stores.

“As this pandemic ravaged our country, Hillandale exploited hardworking New Yorkers to line its own pockets,” said Attorney General James. “In less than two months, Hillandale made millions by

cheating our most vulnerable communities and our servicemembers, actions that are both unlawful and truly rotten. I will always stand up for working people, especially when they are taken advantage of by corporate greed.”

The lawsuit alleges that Hillandale, a company based in Ohio and Pennsylvania, began raising prices during March 2020 as the pandemic grew to emergency levels. In January 2020, Hillandale charged Western Beef supermarkets prices ranging from $0.59 to $1.10 for a dozen large white eggs. On March 15, Hillandale raised that price to $1.49. As the pandemic progressed, Hillandale raised the prices it charged Western Beef repeatedly, eventually reaching $2.93 per dozen — a price almost five times the price Hillandale charged in January.

Hillandale allegedly gouged prices similarly on eggs sold to the commissary store at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. In April 2020, Hillandale charged West Point $3.15 per carton of large eggs, almost quadruple the $0.84 price it charged West Point in January. The suit alleges that Hillandale raised its prices similarly on eggs sold to Stop & Shop, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Associated Supermarkets, and the commissary stores at the U.S. military bases at Fort Hamilton and Fort Drum.

As Hillandale raised prices on the eggs it sold to grocery stores, consum-

ers complained that the grocery stores raised the prices they charged to consumers. One elderly consumer complained to the Attorney General’s Office in April that he attempted to buy Hillandale eggs at a Fine Fare store located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, only to find that “All prices are $2.30 and double the price.” He stated, “I’ve been living in the community for 65 years. The prices are ridiculous...Sad and disrespectful to people who are buying from them all our lives.” Another consumer shopping at a Western Beef store complained that the retail price for a dozen Hillandale eggs had increased to $5.49, stating, “This location serves low income families who, due to the current pandemic emergency, have most likely lost what little income they have. Disgraceful!”

The lawsuit alleges that Hillandale has raised its prices not because of increased costs, but simply to take advantage of higher consumer demand during the pandemic. Hillandale — like numerous egg producers nationwide — has done so by following “indexed” prices published by a market research company called Urner Barry.

According to the suit, Urner Barry’s “indexed” prices work like a feedback loop: Egg producers such as Hillandale tell Urner Barry their “assessments” of prices in the egg marketplace; Urner Barry then repeats back to egg

producers their collective assessments, distilled into “indexed” prices; and egg producers such as Hillandale then use Urner Barry’s indexed prices as justification to set their own prices for the sale of eggs.

The suit alleges that an Urner Barry director has defended the price increases, stating, “egg prices are up because demand is up sharply.” The director stated, “It’s like ahead of a major snowstorm, when people are not sure if they’ll be able to go out again, other than this is happening on a national scale.” Yet, as the suit points out, protecting consumers against excessive price increases during such times is the purpose of the state’s price gouging statute.

The lawsuit against Hillandale is the second suit brought by Attorney General James in the past three months to stop price gouging by wholesale suppliers during the coronavirus pandemic and protect consumers. In May 2020, Attorney General James sued Quality King Distributors, a Long Island-based wholesale company, for illegally raising prices on Lysol disinfectant products it sold to retail stores in New York.

The lawsuit was filed in the Commercial Division of New York State Supreme Court for New York County. Attorney General James is suing for a permanent injunction barring Hillandale from continuing its illegal conduct, restitution for injured consumers,

damages, civil penalties, and disgorgement of Hillandale’s profits from its illegal practices.

“It’s beyond reprehensible that a big company like Hillandale would seek to capitalize on a global health crisis to make a profit,” said David R. Jones, President and CEO of the Community Service Society. “Even more appalling is that countless low-income families in New York, already struggling financially in the wake of the coronavirus, were forced to pay in some cases five times the price for an essential food item — eggs.

We applaud State Attorney General James for seeking injunctive relief barring Hillandale Farms from further price-gouging, civil penalties, disgorgement of its illegal profits, and restitution for consumers who were harmed.”

As we have said from the beginning of this pandemic, the reality is that independently-owned supermarkets such as ours, are not in the business of taking advantage of our customers and while we had no part in increasing the

price on eggs, our owners and their employees took the brunt of consumers’ understandable frustration.” said William Rodriguez, President of the National Supermarket Association, and Nelson Eusebio, Director of Government Relations, National Supermarket Association.

“It’s bad enough that hunger is soaring in New York because of the collapse of the economy and the closure of school meals programs, but it is even worse when food companies increase hunger by using a national crisis to astronomically raises prices through illegal price gouging,” said Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America.

“Eggs are a key staple in the diet of most Americans, so its particular galling that a company would value improper profits over allowing Americans to eat their product. We thank AG James for standing up for the most vulnerable consumers.”

The special film showcase will be held as an on-demand pay-per-view event. The portions of the

proceeds will be donated to the film festival artists and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce’s (GHCC) campaign to support Harlem fundraising. The GHCC supports the Harlem initiative and has raised funds to feed up to 1,400 families per week with a special location where out-of-work artists can receive groceries.

The concert held on August 27th will feature Carl Thomas; it will be co-sponsored by The Harlem Tourism Board. The event will continue the HW/HMF’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Harlem Renaissance. There will also be a strong focus on the 57th anniversary of the

Black Lives Matter march on Washington, where Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.

On August 28th, Rev. Al Sharpton and members of Dr. King’s family will join civil rights leaders and the families of black men and women who were slain by police officers during a rally that took place on the same Lincoln Memorial steps where Dr. King gave his speech in 1963. This event will be virtual to accommodate those who will not be able to make the trip to Washington.
