Savannah, Georgia is my hometown. My mother, five sisters and many family members are still there and in other parts of Georgia. I was not happy to hear the Governor say he was reopening Georgia at this time. I will pray my family in Savannah and Atlanta listen to their Black Mayors urging them to stay home and not open their businesses, nor visit those businesses until the numbers go down. We are all getting "Cabin Fever." However, the numbers are real, Thousands continue to die in the United States daily. Funeral homes are filled to capacity.

How can anyone not take this seriously at this point.

The Good News for COVID-19 and New York is that it seems we are on a downward curve and getting closer to reopening some businesses.

Many of us feel we have suffered enough but of course it is better to suffer with 6 feet distancing than to be 6 feet under.

Anheuser-Busch recently converted their breweries’ capabilities to produce hand sanitizer, donating them to health care workers, emergency management agencies, and local communities in most need.

Anheuser-Busch’s Baldwinsville, NY brewery has produced nearly 90,000 8-ounce bottles of hand sanitizer and delivered to support emergency management agencies, food banks, healthcare systems, local communities and relief efforts throughout the country, including The Bronx.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2020, the Bronx Borough President visited Bronx River Houses to distribute food donated by Martin Brower Distributor.

Borough President Diaz also visited the Food Bank of New York City warehouse in Hunts Point, earlier in the month, and acknowledged not only the staffs’ efforts as a critical link in the food supply for thousands of needy New Yorkers but also Martin Brower Distributor for their substantial donation to the Food Bank of New York City.

n Wednesday, April 8, 2020, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. proclaimed the day as “Essential Workers Wednesday in The Bronx” to honor the essential workers that are keeping New York City operating during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

Borough President Diaz also delivered pizzas to health care workers at Lincoln Hospital in the Melrose neighborhood of The Bronx as part of “Essential Workers Wednesday in The Bronx.”

“Our essential workers are on the front lines of the Coronavirus pandemic every day, providing us with health care, keeping us safe and making sure that our food supply chain is strong and steady,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “As we do our part to flatten the curve and stay home, our essential workers are risking their lives to keep our borough and our city up and running, through this difficult time. As a borough, we want to thank all of our essential workers, our everyday heroes, for being there for us keeping The Bronx and New York City functioning during our time of need.”

On Saturday, April 18, 2020, Borough President Diaz joined Mayor de Blasio and New York City officials to tour the Kingsbridge Armory, which is serving as the largest emergency food distribution center in New York City.

The Kingsbridge Armory is one of three food distribution centers operating out of The Bronx, participating as part of a new program, nyc. gov/getfood, that is using the services of taxi and forhire drivers to deliver meals to over 1 million homes throughout the city.

There was a general lack of preparedness and the public health infrastructure was inadequate with no leadership and organization. Public officials lied, made up facts and 25% of the military personnel who had the flu, infected the citizens around the country.

The flu started in March 1918 and the second wave came in the fall, when the majority of Americans died. This mysterious strain of the flu happened during the end of World War I and mov-

ing lots of men and materials in crowded conditions contributed to the spread of the virus. America and nations around the globe refused to lockdown their countries and the flu spread rapidly.

“The chaotic culture of the Trump White House contributed to the crisis. A lack of planning and a failure to execute, combined with the president’s focus on the news cycle and his preference for following his gut rather than the data cost time and perhaps lives,” says Eric Lipton of the NY Times. The 1918 pandemic lasted 1 year and there were 3 different waves where the majority of people died.

In order for the 2020 pandemic to end in America, the entire country must be shutdown in every state and the president must place large-scale orders for masks, protective equipment, critical hospital equipment, ventilators and community leaders educating their constituents. This is not a time for “happy talk.”

The Coronavirus Task Force must enforce the quarantine with military forces and local police.

China started its lockdown on January 23, 2020 and by the beginning of March, the country was starting to open back up.

They were able to get infected cases to low levels, and the United States must follow the same course of action. The population practiced social distancing and the government was able to test on a wide scale.

At this point, America’s testing process has failed, with testing of less than 1% of the population completed. There is no vaccine and more healthcare workers are getting infected with the virus with no time off. Before the country can be opened, there must be widespread testing and a national database of cases to prevent the spread of the virus.

With over 1 million Americans infected with the virus, and the most citizens to die in any country — over 52,000 — the political and healthcare system is broken. Instead of the pandemic slowing down, it is speeding up and rapidly growing.

In the African American community, the coronavirus is

exposing systemic racism with frightening numbers. In Chicago, the Black population is 29% but 70% of the people dying from the virus are Black. In Louisiana, the Black population is 32% but 70% of the people dying from the virus are Black.

In other cities, like Washington, DC, Baltimore, Detroit and Dallas, there are alarming numbers that indicate health disparities are killing more Blacks.

No one will save Blacks but us. However, Black leaders must sound the alarm. When America gets a cold, African American get pneumonia. There is a fail-

ure of leadership with President Donald Trump and his Vice President Mike Pence managing and running the Coronavirus Task Force. They have done a terrible job, lying to Americans, with a general lack of preparedness.

There is glaring incompetency in Trump’s handling of the crisis, and the failure of testing has spread the virus. As our president continues to fabricate the truth at every daily briefing, don’t believe anything President Trump promises.

13-Year-Old Paris Brown Recalls Her Coronavirus Awakening

By Paris Brown, Special to the NNPA Newswire y name is Paris Brown. My parents are NNPA Newswire Senior National Correspondent, Stacy Brown, and the awesome Shenay Brown.

I am 13-years old and am privileged to be a member of the National Junior Honor Society. But more importantly, I am privileged to have such a beautiful family.

My oldest sister, Rikki, lives in Las Vegas with her husband Marc, and my niece, Nina. I have a brother, Jordan, who lives in Maryland, and my two sisters who live at home with me, Talia and Olivia.

The glue that holds everything together is my parents.

But the coronavirus nearly ruptured us in a way that would have been indescribably dev-

astating.

Four months ago, I barely knew what the coronavirus was, and I had no clue it would change everything so drastically.

At the end of December and the beginning of January, all I heard about the virus was memes and people joking around about washing your hands. I didn’t realize just how serious it was.

And even when more and more reports of deaths from the virus came piling up, I still didn’t take it seriously enough.

Then one day, mom said she wasn’t feeling good, and that was the start of it all.

In my head, I thought that’s just mom being mom. She sometimes doesn’t feel well.

Then when dad got sick,

mom stayed in her room, and dad stayed in the basement. I, of course, thought this was unnecessary.

But then they had to rush mom to the hospital because she couldn’t breathe.

Then a switch flipped in my head: “This is real, and I need to be taking it seriously.”

At first, I didn’t know what to do, so I tried to stay away, but that just made me feel guilty.

So, I did the best I could

to help them get better. I was okay and getting used to our “system,” but I knew deep down, I was terrified.

I didn’t have time to be scared because I had a ton of schoolwork to do (and I still do now), and I had to help take care of them.

You never realize how hard it is to live without the people you love until they’re gone.

So, when people ask me if I’m bored, I tell them I’m not. All of the schoolwork and clean-

ing and cooking have kept me distracted in a good way, so I don’t freak out and get overwhelmed.

This was definitely an experience I’ll never forget because I haven’t been able to hug my parents or speak more

than a couple of words to them face-to-face.

But it’s almost over — they get to come out of quarantine next week. And hopefully, with all of me and my sisters’ excitement, they’ll feel better than ever.

hanks to the efforts of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Democrats have secured $60 billion in new Small Business Administration PPP funding dedicated to small lenders and community-based financial institutions. They’ve also secured $50 billion for the SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) program, which will allow approximately $300 billion in loans to small businesses.

Congressional Democrats reached an agreement with the Trump administration on an interim coronavirus emergency relief package that provides support and fixes to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), as well as increased funding for emergency disaster loans and

grants, hospitals, health care providers and testing.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky), without consulting Democrats, had initially tried to push through a bill that would have increased funding for PPP without providing any critical fixes to the program.

The GOP proposal would have done nothing to aid the most vulnerable small businesses and wouldn’t have provided any additional funding to our health care system or testing.

Thanks to the efforts of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), Democrats have secured $60 billion in new Small Business Administration PPP funding dedicated to small lenders and community-based financial institutions.

Additionally, in large part because of the efforts of

the CBC, Democrats have secured $10 billion for the SBA’s Emergency Economic Injury Grant program, $75 billion in emergency money for our health system, and $25 billion to increase testing and contact tracing capabilities.

The Senate is expected to pass the legislation.

“While this bill does not address all current needs of the coronavirus crisis, it is a major improvement and will help millions of Americans and our frontline workers,” Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH), stated on a conference call with the Black Press of America on Tuesday, April 21.

“Under the leadership of CBC Chair Karen Bass, the CBC has been on the frontlines, and without us, there would be no one fighting for our communities,” Beatty stated, adding that the CBC

recognizes that more needs to be done. They will continue fighting for additional funding for working families and those who need it most in the next coronavirus package.

“Rep. Maxine Waters (DCA) made sure that there was a carve-out in this package for small community banks and credit unions, which ensures that there’s an opportunity for them to take care of their customers,” stated Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY).

“The EIDL program will benefit many small and African American businesses as we move forward,” Meeks said.

Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL) said the Trump administration has “proven time and again that we cannot trust them.”

Kelly said the CBC continues to work to make sure that crucial data that includes

race is collected during testing and tracing of the pandemic.

“Through this bill, we do target hospitals in some of the most needed areas, and as we focus on CARES part 2, we need data to make the best policy decisions. Lives are at stake, so we need to act quickly,” Kelly stated.

Rep. Dwight Evans (DPA) said the CBC has always understood that Blackowned and other small businesses “are the backbone of America.”

“We have constantly worked together to try and make things happen,” he stated.

“Under Karen Bass’ leadership, we all understood that the CBC was not going to leave our constituents out.

It’s not possible to conduct business if people are not healthy and safe,” Evans stated.

How to Make the CARES Act Part of Your Financial Plan (Statepoint)

or many Americans, the current state of the economy is creating real financial challenges and concerns.

However, the federal government’s recently enacted CARES Act is intended to provide some financial relief to families and business owners who may be struggling to manage their finances, using cash disbursements, expanded unemployment benefits, and different loans and tax credits.

In addition to reading up on CARES Act programs, experts say there are several ways to make sure you get as much financial support from the bill as possible. Here are three things to think about: • Estimate the val-

ue of your economic impact check and plan how you will use the money. The Internal Revenue Service may send up to $1,200 to individual taxpayers and $2,400 to married couples, plus another $500 for each qualifying child. Tools such as The Washington Post’s stimulus check calculator can help you

determine the amount you may receive. Then you can decide what to do with your check: e.g., pay your bills, buy essential goods, save it or even invest it.

• Check your eligibility for unemployment benefits. The CARES Act created a new Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program to provide

benefits to people who lost their jobs, had their hours reduced or are unable to work for reasons related to COVID-19. You may qualify for these benefits even if you are self-employed or an independent contractor.

Unemployment benefits have also been increased by $600 a week and extended to

up to 39 weeks of coverage. The Department of Labor’s website (www.dol.gov/coronavirus) has more information on these changes, as well as guidance on applying for unemployment.

• If you own a small business, consider applying for a federal loan. The CARES Act set aside hundreds of billions of dollars for the Small Business Administration and the Treasury Department to provide financial relief to business owners and their employees.

Loan options include the Paycheck Protection Program to help businesses keep workers on their payrolls and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan to help cover a temporary dip in revenue. Visit the SBA’s website (www.sba.gov/fund-

African-Americans More Likely To Suffer With Finances & Health Problems From COVID-19, New Report Says

A

frican Americans will see their physical and financial health backslide from the onslaught of the coronavirus, according to a new report.

Racial disparities and long standing inequalities are putting black livelihoods and lives at risk, and drastic actions are needed in order to shore up black health and business outcomes, a new report from the McKinsey In12

stitute found.

Although African Americans are more likely to contract the coronavirus, they have lower access to testing facilities and are more likely to develop secondary complications from the illness, the report, which was released April 14, found.

African Americans already suffer disproportionate negative health outcomes compared to other etnnic groups. They are twice as likely than whites

to die of illnesses that exacerbate the symptoms of COVID-19, like asthma, diabetes and heart disease, the report said.

Black people are almost twice as likely to live in the 566 counties that are most at risk for coronavirus-related disruptions in public health and the economy. 65 percent of the country’s black population lives in 10 of 16 states that were below the median testing rate for the rest of the coun-

try, the report states.

African American’s finances are set to take a hit too. 40 percent black owned business revenues come from five sectors that are most vulnerable to destabilization from the coronavirus, including hospitality, retail, and leisure - compared to 25 percent of revenues from all American companies. There are about seven million jobs - representing almost 40 percent of positions held by black

workers - that are vulnerable to loss or other disruption because of the pandemic, compared to 34 percent of white workers, according to the report.

The report also found that black people are overrepresented in essential jobs. They comprise 39 percent of psychiatric aides, 38 percent of hospital orderlies and 33 percent of nursing assistants.

And African Americans are overrepresented in nine out of the 10

lowest paid essential jobs where lots of contact with the public is part of the work.

The report recommends local, state and federal officials taking immediate measures like documenting COVID-19’s effects on different races, expanding the use of community health workers and tapping faith-based and community nonprofits to help educate the public on prevention and distribute protective gear.

Creating Educational Experiences Based on Kids’ Favorite Shows (Statepoint)

I

f your child is all about a particular television show, there are a number of interactive and educational ways to extend the fun beyond the screen. Here are a few ideas: • Play Pretend: Get creative by fashioning character costumes from what you have at home, then have kids pick out favorite scenes or invent their own. Stage a play or create a video acting them out.

• Toys and Games: Look for toys and games based on your children’s favorite programming.

dvocates for New York City youth fear the city’s decision to cancel its Summer Youth Employment Program will have catastrophic effects on young people.

City officials have axed the $124 million a year program, which employs about 75,000

low income students, to help plug a budget shortfall triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. The city said its plans to cut all of the government-sponsored summer programming will save about $185 million.

But children and youth advocates say the program’s cancelation is a recipe for

disaster for students who have already had their lives upended by COVID-19.

“We’ve gotta ring the alarm,” Eddie Silverio, of Catholic Charities, said in a virtual town hall on the issue last week that was moderated by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.

Silverio recalled

the spate of viral incidents last summer when people were dousing police officers with water.

“Because we are in the state that we’re in, we have our hands tied,” he said, “but what’s going to happen? Our young people are going to be out on the block...what happens when the ten-

sions rise?”

Dominique Jones of the Harlem Boys and Girls Club, said she believed SYEP was already underfunded before the cancellations, and the program’s end will disrupt students’ ability to find well paid jobs after graduation.

Restorative Justice is a phrase used by a state-widemovement advocating for the creation of structures that will allow communities and individuals who were harmed, mostly by the unjust cannabis laws, to have access to participate in what is being considered “the New York State Green Rush.”

Millions of dollars will be made when Cannabis becomes legal in New York State.

olorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men and in women in the U.S., making screening one of the most important preventive health measures to take as an adult. While no one relishes cancer screenings, new recommendations can help those of average risk for colorectal cancer learn more about the importance of screenings, and the most effective strategy for completing them.

Recently published in “Annals of Internal Medicine,” a new evidence-based guidance statement from the American College of Physicians (ACP) says that physicians should screen for colorectal cancer in average-risk adults who do not have symptoms between the ages of 50 and 75, and that the frequency of screening depends upon the screening approach.

“Not enough people in the United States get screened for colorectal cancer,” says ACP president, Dr. Robert M. McLean. “Physicians should perform an individualized risk assessment for colorectal cancer in all adults. Doctors and patients should select the screening test based on a discussion of the benefits, harms, costs, availability, frequency and patient preferences.”

ACP suggests any one of the following screening strategies: • Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) or high sensitivity guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) every two years • Colonoscopy every 10 years • Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 10 years plus FIT every two years Dr. McLean stresses that ACP’s guidance statement, which relied on evidence presented or referenced in selected guidelines and accompanying evidence reports, is for adults at average risk for colorectal cancer who do not have symptoms and does not apply to adults with a family history of colorectal cancer, a long-standing history of inflammatory bowel disease, genetic syndromes such as familial cancerous polyps, a personal history of previous colorectal cancer or benign polyps or other risk factors.

While the median age

for colorectal cancer diagnosis is 67 years, and individuals aged 65 to 75 years derive the most direct benefit from colorectal cancer screening, screening in average-risk adults ages 50 to 75 also has benefit, ACP found.

All colorectal cancer-screening tests -- like all tests and procedures -have both potential benefits and potential harms, which vary by person and screening strategy.

Given the tradeoffs between benefits and harms, some patients may prefer less intensive screening such as beginning at a later age, stopping at an earlier age, or screening less frequently regardless of the test selected.

“This guidance statement is just that -- guidance. Clinical recommendations may not apply to every patient or all clinical situations,” says Dr. McLean. “That’s why patient-physician relationships and shared-decision making are so important.”

T

he guy with the white hat has a nice horse.

The guy with the white hat has rugged boots with spurs like stars on his heels.

He wears crisp jeans, a starched shirt, a big belt buckle, and a bigger smile.

The guy in the black has all those things, too, and more: in “The Compton Cowboys” by Walter Thompson-Hernández, the guy in the black hat also has black skin.

The memory had always stuck with him.

Many years ago, back when Thompson-Hernández was a boy growing up south of Los Angeles, being a Compton Cowboy was something lots

of kids longed to be. It was that, or join a gang, and the choice was a lifeline for many, thanks to Mayisha Akbar.

Back then, after Akbar bought a ranch in a spot that few would evenlook for a ranch, after she became a Muslim and changed her name, she understood that if you put a kid on a horse, it has a way of changing that kid’s life. If a kid had discipline and goals and maybe his or her own horse, well, that was even better because then two lives were changed. But her riders now were mostly adults, Akbar had health issues, and she was looking to pass the ranch on to

her nephew.

It was a legacy that Randy didn’t take lightly.

Decades ago, when Compton was still mostly rural, the ranch was set aside for Great Migrationers who might miss their farms back home. In its heyday, it was something; today, it sported stables filled with second-chance thoroughbreds and horse-auction refugees, houses for the hands, and riding areas surrounded incongruously by C-stores andhigh traffic.

The Compton ranch wasn’t the only place in the area forblack cowboys to ride, but it was respected and it was up to Randy to keep it so.

That would be a battle: alcoholism and drug

abuse plagued the riders, as did gangs, prison-time, bad pasts, and personality clashes. The children’s program had few takers anymore and the ranch was technically up for sale. It was running out of time and money...

“The Compton Cowboys” is a nice surprise. It’s also a source ofdisappointment.

For sure, readers will find themselves fascinated by a ranch in South Central, and itching to learn more about it, but facts here are frustratingly sparse. Yes, author Walter Thompson-Hernández follows the subtitled promise of focusing his book on the cowboys themselves, but a ranch in the middle of So-

Cal urbanity? It seems like a gift. Truly, more backstory on it would’ve been nice.

Instead, readers get a lot of throat-clearing and profile-rehashing thatspins in place before it zooms off in a satisfying manner. Again, yes, that’s the focus but less here absolutely would have been more.

In the end, “The Compton Cowboys” is good but it may leave alingering feeling of Not Enough.

For anyone needing a whowhat-why, it requires a lot of fill-in-the-blanks and it saddles a reader with too many questions.
