Thank God for another Day! Last week we celebrated the opening of Apple Bank’s newest branch on 125th Street.

This was a significant move by Apple Bank as they moved out of the historic building on 125th Street where the branch has been located for more than 100 years.

Many don’t know that Apple Bank (originally called Haarlem Bank) was the first bank in Harlem and I believe the first bank in New York more than 156 years ago. The fact that Apple Bank has donated the building to a new charter school shows their continued support for the Harlem community. see page 12) Next week on April 26th I am being honored by Ambassador Sujay Johnson-Cook and ProVOice at the Grand Slam ballroom. Police Athletic League Cops & Kids Team from the Bronx Wins Citywide Basketball Championship

n Saturday, April 6th, Police Athletic League (PAL) youngsters and NYPD Officers from PAL’s Cops & Kids Basketball Program, representing the Bronx and Brooklyn North, competed for the championship title in an action-packed day of basketball at the PAL Harlem Center. The PAL Cops & Kids team from the Bronx was victorious and took home the 2019 Cops & Kids basketball championship and trophies. Police officers and PAL teens also participated in a basketball skills competition and three-point shot contests on the court.

PAL Cops & Kids leagues serve boys and girls throughout the year in sports including: softball, soccer, basketball, volleyball and flag foot-

ball. NYPD’s Community Affairs officers, along with volunteer police officers from around the City, work closely with PAL to coach, mentor and compete in athletic contests with community youth, allowing all participants to develop positive and lasting relationships.

PAL’s sports programs strive to increase the physical activity of young people, while decreasing risk-taking behaviors by providing opportunities for youth and teens from low-income areas to play in well equipped, organized sports leagues.

COMMENTARY: Play Ball, To the Victor Goes You

have often found myself wrestling with the concepts and the realities of good and evil. If you believe in God and His goodness, power and the righteousness of Jesus Christ, then it follows that you must also believe in Satan and his earthbound inherent ‘evilness.’ If this is true, then it is the height of ignorance or hypocrisy that we as human beings follow a course of action consistent with one belief and act totally inconsistent with and contrary to that same belief.

We concede to the reality that evil exists. As a matter of fact, our civil laws and subsequent penalties are there to protect us against criminal, abhorrent and, yes, even evil behavior.

Hence, what I am merely recognizing here is that the counterbalance of this fact ought to be a set of behaviors, or at least a set of

professed beliefs, that confirm the reality of God, the good stuff.

Unfortunately, it has been my experience — and at times my behavior — that evil demands action, while ‘Godness’ gets a whole lot of lip service. I believe this is true because with all of our flaws and faults (sinfulness), we’ve gotten used to functioning in a world somewhat controlled by the evil one.

Christians must recognize that Satan has power in the secular world.

Thanks to him, many of us have become numb to those things that demonstrate his existence in this world where we temporarily reside. Fortunately, when we come to Christ, we are able to put some perspective on all of this as we begin to see the contrast between good and evil in our own lives. That’s when I believe you finally get it.

By putting ourselves in perspective to Christ’s ultimate sacrifice, it becomes clear where we fit in this struggle between good and

evil. We are the ultimate prize.

To the victor goes us.

Fortunately for us, we have some say in the clubhouse celebration. Once you accept the truth of good and evil in the context of God and the devil, the rules of engagement are clear. In this game the ball (us) has a say in who wins the game.

Can you imagine any athletic event where the ball actually participates as an independent active component? Well, the truth is we are that ball in this high-stake game for our very own souls. Imagine that. We can stack the deck in our favor. But it can’t be happenstance. It must be deliberate, and we must be constant in making sure that the ball takes favorable bounces throughout the game.

To be sure, with this in mind, Christ has given us the game plan we need to insure victory. “He who believes in me….shall never die.” John 11:25-26. That’s it. It’s all about belief.

When Jesus says in John 16:8-9, “when He (the Counselor/Holy Spirit)

comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin because men do not believe in me…” He is telling us that the biggest threat to our own salvation is disbelief. You see belief in Christ brings about condemnation of Satan and Satan-like things i.e., evil. It must follow.

Now we are armed and ready for this struggle. We are prepared and fortified against the evil that would destroy us. We now have a reference point for current and future behavior, and we know the rule of engagement because we know the difference between good and evil.

More importantly, we can now recognize our weaknesses in relation to evil and our strengths in relation to good. No contest worth anything is without risks. But for now, let’s play and may God forgive your fumbles and bless your recoveries in the name of His Son, Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

Can smart cities effectively win the fight against poverty?

O

n Friday, April 12th, at the UN, yours truly chaired a session of the XIX Infopoverty World Conference -IWCwhich aimed to bring practical solutions to answer a fundamental question: can smart cities effectively win the fight against poverty?

IWC was created by OCCAM and yours truly in 2000, when I was Head of the European Parliament Information Office in Milan. At the time it was extremely innovative not only to underline the advantages but also to warn about the possible dangers of new technologies (ICTs). We defined there was a need to set guidelines, protocols and best practices on how to use ICTs in order to prevent the widening of the digital-divide and to promote a sustainable

development. Without such guidelines the danger was that ICTs could be economical accessible only to the wealthiest nations thus increasing their wealth and impoverishing even more the poorer nations.

19 years later much has been accomplished, but the way to socio-economic justice and equity is still long and perilous. But ICTs can and should be the best tool to achieve the goals of sustainable development (SDGs) set by the UN. This is what this conference is about.

Smart Cities have now become the center of the digital revolution, subject to very strong investments in research and innovations in various fields: mobility, home automation, clean energy, clean water, climate change, e-governance. Smart

Cities can effectively win the fight against poverty if the priorities remain clear: fight against poverty and ensure well-being for solving the problem of slums that affects a large number of megalopolises.

More than half of the world population is urbanized, while the gap between

urban and rural areas is constantly increasing. Large pockets of poverty remain, with the paradoxical consequence that, in urban areas, food is generally imported from great distances while famines are more likely to occur in fertile but not adequately exploited territories.

The disparities produce

growing urban masses in complete disarray and cause desperation, violence and pushes people to emigrate.

Empowering cities with modern technologies, capable of providing decent living conditions by creating good paying jobs and making health care and education accessible to all, means tak-

ing a large step towards the achievement of the SDGs set by the UN. That is why OCCAM, each year, gathers in Infopoverty the best thinkers, innovative operators and managers of public and private institutions, universities and research centers and asks them to focus on convergent and easily applicable solutions at minimum costs, as a concrete contribution by the digital world to achieve the sharing of wealth through economic and social justice.

“HADESTOWN” BROADWAY MUSICAL

adestown, the new musical by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, developed with innovative director and Tony Award® nominee Rachel Chavkin, is now in previews for its eagerly anticipated Broadway opening night on Wednesday, April 17 at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street).

Miranda brings to her new role a passion for financial education: “I’m big on literacy,” she said noting that its especially important for business owners to be wellversed in understanding finances. Miranda recently volunteered to support aspiring entrepreneurs at “The Boss Pitch”, a type of “Shark Tank” experience presented by Harlem Film House at which she was a expert panelist offering banking advice.

“Education is a big key and it’s part of our job to educate,” she said.

Miranda expressed a deep appreciation for the “traditional” culture of the Harlem branch where “face-to-face” contact is

important and generations of family members have stayed with the bank based on the relationships they have built with employees. “It’s a beautiful thing to see and the more technologically advanced we become the less of that tradition is seen,” said Miranda. As a way to keep up with the younger generation banking at Apple they offer modern technology like its mobile banking app, added Miranda.

Former 125th Street Branch Manager Faith Williams was at the grand opening to show support to a banking institution she spent 47 years working with before her retirement in 2018. She said

the best part of working at Apple was having the chance to help people in the community, especially the seniors and individuals with special needs.

“This is a very community-oriented bank,” said Williams. She also noted how her colleagues made working at the bank a positive experience: “We have a beautiful staff.”

Apple Bank Director of Marketing Constance M. Martin explained how Apple Bank is “firmly rooted” in the Harlem community as the first bank in the neighborhood. The year was 1863 when Harlem Savings Bank opened its doors on 124th Street and Third Avenue. In 1981 when-

their branches were starting to expand outside of Harlem and New York City, the decision was made to change its name to Apple Bank and 156 years later Apple Bank is still serving the community at over 70 branches throughout New York City, Long Island and Upstate New York.

Over the years Apple Bank has built partnerships with and sponsored events for a number of local community organizations including Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce & HARLEM WEEK, New Harlem East Merchants’ Association (NHEMA) and Kingsbridge Heights Community Center.

Geoffrey E. Eaton Named Director of Community Affairs and Diversity at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and Touro College of Pharmacy in Harlem

T

ouro College of Osteopathic Medicine(TouroCOM) and Touro College of Pharmacy (TCOP) in Harlem have appointed Geoffrey E. Eaton director of community affairs and diversity, the colleges announced recently. Mr. Eaton has a long history of leadership in Harlem, serving as first vice president of the New York State Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the nation’s most prominent civil rights organization. He also worked as chief of staff for long-serving Harlem Congressman Charles Rangel.

Mr. Eaton has ties with TouroCOM dating back years, almost to the opening of the medical school in

2007. He was a founding member of the TouroCOM Harlem Community Advisory Board (CAB) and serves as its co-chair. The CAB takes a lead role in raising money for scholarships for underrepresented minorities at the medical school. He has been a staunch advocate of TouroCOM’s master’s in biological sciences program, a pipeline to the DO (Doctor of Osteopathic

Medicine) program, through which bright, talented and motivated minority students interested in medicine but who may lack the high standardized test scores required by most medical schools can track into the DO program.

A central part of the mission of both TouroCOM and TCOP is to increase diversity among their student populations and to serve the Harlem community, which suffers from disparities in health care. This year TouroCOM welcomed a record-breaking number of underrepresented minorities – over 27 percent of the class – but strives to do more.

“We are so pleased and lucky to have someone of Geoff’s experience and talent join our team,” said Dr.

Of his new position, Mr. Eaton said: “I am delighted to be able to continue to carry out Touro’s mission and goals of improving the health of Harlem’s residents by fostering more community and student engagement and increasing enrollment of

underrepresented minorities in medicine and pharmacy.”

A life-long Harlem resident, Mr. Eaton also serves as president of the NAACP Mid-Manhattan Branch, a position he has held for ten years, and has received a number of unprecedented NAACP National and State Conference awards and many other community service honors. Prior to his work with Congressman Rangel, he amassed over 20 years of experience in New York City government, where he served in a variety of positions including deputy public advocate for community affairs for the first elected Public Advocate, Mark Green. He continues to volunteer with several civic, cultural and community organizations.

woman who has dedicated her life to STEM learning for young men and a longtime advocate for Harlem and beyond were among the honorees at The Links Inc’s 70th-anniversary gala.

Several hundred people donned their finery for an elegant evening celebrating The Links Inc.’s 70 years of volunteerism and activism in the New York area. The event, held April 7 at 583 Park Ave. honored The Links work in the community, like domestic violence prevention, empow-

ering senior citizens through education, mentorship of atrisk youth and even building wells in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake.

The event also honored Cristina Lewis Halpern and Alma Rangel for their community work, as a crowd that included the Rev. Al Sharpton, “Love & Hip Hop” creator Mona Scott Young, and New York Civil Court Judge J. Machelle Sweeting.

Rounding out the VIPS were Rep. Adriano Espaillat, former Essence Magazine editor and National Cares Mentoring Movement founder Susan Taylor, New York Beacon columnist Audrey Bernard and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

Halpern received the “Woman of distinction Community Impact Award”

for her nonprofit “All Star Code,” a program that preps boys for careers in STEM and technology.

Halpern said she was inspired to found “All Star Code” for men like her father, Reginald F. Lewis, the first black man to own a U.S. billion dollar company.

“When I looked around the landscape, there was a lot of programming for girls, but none for boys like my father would have been,” Halpern told the crowd.

Rangel later cinched the “Woman of Distinction Community Icon Award” for her advocacy both in Harlem and Washington, most recently opening the Alma Rangel Gardens, state of the art housing uptown for senior citizens.

“I just love what I’ve done over the years, and I’m going

to continue to do it,” Rangel said to the audience, which included her husband, longtime Harlem congressman former Rep. Charles Rangel.

Both women received standing ovations from the crowd.

Now an international sisterhood, The Links boasts some 15,000 members across the country and also in the Caribbean and United Kingdom, according to The Links’ national president Dr. Kimberly Jeffries Leonard.

The event raised more than $15,000 that evening to support The Links’ programs and services in the five boroughs.

After the awards were handed out, R&B singer Angie Stone took to the stage and regaled the crowd with a few of her hits, including “No More Rain” and “Brotha.”

arlem Holistic Wellness Week (HHWW) is an annual event that starts on the last Saturday in April, to coincide with World Tai Chi and Qigong Day (www. worldtaichiday.org). which also starts on the last Saturday in April. On April 27th thousands of people in over 80 nations will begin doing energy exercises like tai chi and Qigong at 10:00 am in each time zone with a one mind focus of world peace and natural health and wellness.

The first event of HHWW is traditionally the Harlem Celebration of World Tai Chi and Qigong Day in St. Nicholas Park at 135th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue starting at 10:00 am. This year another health and wellness program will take place on April 27th thanks to Yvonne Stafford founder of the Natural Living Film Festival and Community Forum. Yvonne has agreed to celebrate with HHWW to develop a natural health and wellness film festival starting this year.

Yvonne has a long been a strong voice in the field of holistic health she has not only provided films and

community forums on natural wellness options for years, she is also a certified laughter Yoga Ambassador she is the author of the well received book: From Fast Foods to Slow Foods: How to Wake Up Laughing.

CityParks Golf presented with The First Tee NYC offers youth, ages six to 17, the opportunity to play golf at the CityParks Junior Golf Center in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

The program will be held in two seven-week sessions, running from March 9 through April 28 in addition to May 6 through June 28.

The program offers golf instruction for all skill levels at our facility and use of equipment. The Center features a 6-hole par 3 course, putting and chipping greens, a driving range, clubhouse and classroom.

CityParks Track & Field, presented in partnership with New York Road Runners and supported by the Randall’s Island Park Alliance, gives New York City kids, ages eight to 14, the chance to learn the basics of the sport.

From hurdles and relay races, to long jump, shot put and javelin throw, this program runs from April 20 through June 8 in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens, with sessions once per week.

pril 20th is the unofficial holiday for marijuana enthusiast thoughout the world. It is a day thousands of people come together to push for the legalization of marijuana by holding rallies and marches.

There are many theories of how the term code 420 developed such as the police code of 420 for possession, or the California Senate Bill 420 that refers to the use of medical mar-

T

hey said it would never work.

He married up too high. She was a gold-digger and he didn’t realize it yet. She wanted a Daddy figure; he was Mama’s Boy. Neither was good enough for the other, so they said it wouldn’t work. And in the new novel, “Before We Were Wicked” by Eric Jerome Dickey… they were right.

When Ken Swift first spotted Jimi Lee, he wasn’t looking for a woman.

He was looking for the man his boss, San Bernardino, had sent him to punish, because that man hadn’t paid his loan. San Bernardino didn’t mess

around.

When it came to women, neither did Ken Swift.

Jimi Lee was gorgeous, an Ethiopian in a white skirt who could dance like nobody’s business. She came to the club with another guy but she left with Ken Swift, who took her to his condo. She told him her birth name, told him that she was headed for Harvard in the fall, said her parents were very strict and would be angry at her audacity. Then she said she was a virgin.

She learned about lovemaking fast. Jimi Lee and Ken Swift broke all her parents’ rules and some her parents didn’t even know about, and

they were purposefully careless about birth control. Even so, her pregnancy came as a surprise.

Jimi Lee’s parents kicked her out of their house. Ken Swift married her at the L.A. courthouse. She was nineteen and her dream of Harvard was gone; he was twenty-two, a husband, father, and an enforcer who busted skulls to pay for diapers for his baby girl and clothes for his increasingly unhappy wife.

And then, while on a job for San Bernardino, Ken Swift murdered a man in self-defense. Jimi Lee knew it, which only increased her discontent: she started sleeping

around, drinking, leaving home the second Ken Swift arrived. Eventually, Jimi Lee told him what she wanted out of a divorce, which was everything he owned.

And that was fine with Ken Swift; things were not important. He’d never miss them, but could he ever give up Jimi Lee? What you’ll need to know about “Before We Were Wicked” is this: there are bedroom scenes in this book. Lots of them.

There’s also a lot of dialogue here, which may seem like overkill and can be confusing but it’s important to read it all, to set the moods of love and anger. It’s through that dialogue that author Eric Jerome Dickey lets

readers watch the unfolding of a fast-paced, passionate relationship that really has no future. To shake things up, then, in the midst of our voyeurism, we glimpse the Elephant in Swift’s Room, which is his work for San Bernardino, who doesn’t appear in this novel but who acts as an irritant that prods the marriage until it explodes.

That all makes this the tightest of novels but with lots of spice, so beware. This book is hot and violent and if you can handle that, “Before We Were Wicked” will work right fine.
