n October 25th, Gospel Extravaganza 2018, presented by the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (NBLCA), was a stellar celebration of life and a culmination of the organization’s 30 years of service to educating, mobilizing and empowering Black leaders to address and proactively fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic and other health disparities facing African Americans. The benefit concert was attended by more than 200 Gospel enthusiasts and community leaders who gathered for an evening of triumph and recognition. Hosted by Liz Black, of 107.5 WBLS NY, 1190 WLIB NY, WMCA 590 and NBLCA’s president and CEO C. Virginia Fields, the evening featured live performances by two of the biggest names in Gospel music

Accepting the award for Amida Care was president and CEO Doug Wirth. Orbit Clanton, presi-

dent of the Convent Avenue Baptist Church - Healing Hope Ministry accepted the award on behalf of the Church.

In commenting on the occasion, C. Virginia Fields stated, “This special evening of celebration and praise is NBLCA’s way of sharing our gratitude to all of you. Your support allows NBLCA

to deepen and broaden its fight against public health inequities as we transform the lives of those living with, and affected by, HIV/ AIDS and other health disparities.”

Ms. Fields added, “I am pleased to report that NBLCA is in a strong position to respond to the shifting funding priorities, program and service needs of the populations that we serve. We will ring in our next 30 years and beyond with enhanced and increased services and a renewed commitment to our mission.”

Meditation Class at JASA’s Friendship Houses in Bronx and Brooklyn

armen M, aged 72, was severely depressed after experiencing significant loss in her life.

When she learned of a meditation class offered to the seniors at JASA’s Friendship House in the Bronx she was initially resistant, afraid that she’d be surrounded by slow moving “old people.”

Instead, she discovered a technique that helped

relieve her stress and as she says, “opened her heart.” Likewise, Carmen R., aged 80+, was a successful business woman who had owned a Real Estate office in the Bronx, until she started losing her sight due to glaucoma. She also takes the meditation class and employs the breathing and relaxation techniques throughout the week to sleep and to

become “more at ease” with herself.

Their instructor, Peggy Kaslyn, LMSW, personally experienced the benefits of meditation after being diagnosed with MS several years ago. The practice enabled her to deal with the anxieties and obstacles she faced as a result of the disease. She brings this understanding and expertise to the Friendship House, of-

OP-ED: Black Studies becomes major factor in social advancement

he Black Power movement of the late 1960s helped to redefine African American identity and establish a new racial consciousness.

As influential as this period was in the study and enhancement of the African Diaspora, this movement spawned the academic discipline known as Black Studies on our college and university campuses.

While there are more than 100 Black Studies degree programs nationwide, it can be confirmed that the beginning of this curriculum evolved from a student strike at San Francisco State University in 1968.

Young people there forced the establishment of the Division of Ethnic Studies and departments of Black, Asian, Chicano and Native studies, all accomplished despite the discouragement of then university president and future United States Sen. S.I. Hayakawya.

The Black Student Union on campus drafted a political statement, “The Justification for African American Studies,” that would become the main document for the development of the academic departments at more than 60 universities by the early 1970s. Shortly thereafter,

Black Studies programs were implemented with inherent reservations from the various campus administrations at UCLA, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Long Beach and at Cal State Northridge.

Black Studies can be traced back as far back as the Atlanta University Conferences held from 1898 to 1914. This early formulation was under the auspices of W.E.B. DuBois in marking the inauguration of the first scientific study of the conditions of Black people that covered important aspects of life (e.g., health homes, the question of organization, economic development, higher education, voting).

By 1915, Carter G. Woodson had founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) in marking a brave new era for Black curriculum. The group was founded to promote historical research, publish books on Black life and history, promote the study of Black history through clubs and schools and, in a noble effort, to foster harmony between the races by interpreting one history to the other. It was during this period that the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HCBUs) began to respond to

scholarly activities in history and social science.

It had become abundantly clear more than 100 years ago that Black education should conform to the social conditions of Black people. Black colleges began to add courses in Black history to their curricula. This effort corresponded with a call by Black college students for a culturally relevant curriculum, the same theme that occurred some 50 years later when mainstream support for Black Studies grew, particularly when more African American students were admitted into predominantly White institutions.

For the past 50 years, Black Studies has been evolving as a result of the social movement that opposed institutional racism in higher education. As more Black families were moving into the middle class, young people in many sectors either saw education as oppressive or liberating. Many African Americans began to consider Black Studies and Black education as having a “special assignment” to challenge and call out White mainstream knowledge for its deficiencies and racial corruption.

At the modern HCBU campuses, most have established courses in Black Studies, but

few have departments dedicated to the field. Only Howard and Clark Atlanta universities offer a Master of Arts in Black Studies.

Howard is the only HBCU to offer a doctoral program in African Studies; eight traditionally White institutions (including Princeton and Yale) also offer a Ph. D in African Studies. Why don’t more HBCUs offer a diploma in Black Studies? The problem is money. “A program in African American Studies is very difficult to sustain in good times, and it’s near impossible in tough times,” said Dr. Johnny Taylor, president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. “However, some of the majority institutions have been able to get someone to underwrite less popular programs.”

People of African ancestry have a long history and tradition in practically every region of the world. This history has been hallmarked by a number of struggles for recognition and against discrimination. In the present context of global uncertainty and the political reshaping of nation states Black Studies can play an essential role in the examination of the world’s Black population and the challenges that lie ahead.

“Miracle In Rwanda”: Forgiveness, Love And The Lord Are Key!

had the blessing Sunday, April 7 of being at Theatre Row’s Acorn Theatre at 410 W 42nd Street for a performance “Miracle In Rwanda.”

This production written by Leslie Malaika Lewis and Edward Vilga tells the true story of Immaculee Ilibagiza, one of eight survivors of the genocide against the Tutsi people in Rwanda in 1994. What was so meaningful about the drama being performed on that particular day is it marked the 25 Anniversary of the beginning of the three-month genocide that ended with over 1 million Tutsi people murdered. Malaika Uwamahoro, also a Rwandan, performed 15 different characters in the one-woman show delicately, yet forcefully and completely, telling the harrowing story that Immaculee faced at the age of 24.

Can you imagine the President of your country being murdered and the militia in your country killing men, women and children just because they are from the opposing tribe? Imagine your father looking at you and telling you,

leave your family and go to a Pastor he knows to save your own life. Imagine being in someone’s house, hiding in their second bathroom 3 ft. by 4 ft. with seven other people.

Sometimes laying down, other times standing up, always in cramped spaces, imagine barely getting food to sustain you, feeling hunger pains, seeing yourself becoming thinner and thinner, and more horrible--not being able to utter a word, except when the Pastor comes to feed and check on you. You can’t speak other than that because you don’t know if anyone else is around to hear you and report you to the Militia who are only interested because they are yearning to kill you. They are yearning to annihilate all of your people--your mother, father, and siblings.

Imagine hearing people being admonished over the radio to get a machete and hack up you and your people. Imagine hearing the screaming of people being murdered—men, women and children. Imagine the Militia coming to where you are, calling your name and breaking up things in the house

that you are hiding in. Imagine having your heart filled with fear. How would you handle it? How would you manage to stay positive? What would you do to pass the time?

The story of Immaculee is one of great terror, sadness, and tragedy, but it is also a story of the resilience of the human spirit, the healing power in forgiveness and the strengthening power you can feel when you lay your burdens on God and ask him for help and the ability to understand what you should be doing. You have to say “thy will be done” and truly mean it. The story of Immaculee is a miracle indeed and one that will uplift your spirit.

This play, this magnificent true story, is full of facts that happened to this young woman, who today is a healthy, happy person, who believes in forgiveness and the power of love.

This play will touch your soul in ways that you would not think a play can do. You realize whatever hardship you may be going through there are definitely people that have gone through worse and yet they manage to be positive. This play is a miraculous phenomenon. George Drance is marvelous as he directs this poignant piece.

The real Immaculee attended the performance and spoke to the audience after receiving a standing ovation. She shared not only her strength--but led the audience who held candles and rosary beads provided by the show--in the Lord’s Prayer and a Hail Mary. This amazing woman shared that when everything was first happening she wanted to train herself to be a soldier and avenge her family, but as time passed she

realized that she had to put things in God’s hands and listen to what he said to her in her daily prayers. Another person in the audience was Valentine Rugwabiza, the Ambassador from Rwanda. She spoke to the audience about the importance of this play and this

story being told. She remarked that knowledge is power, because it can bring on actions to prevent this from happening again. Talking about the power and message of this production, Rugwabiza shared that this play will be performed for the U.N. on April 29th.

“Miracle In Rwanda” is running through May 11, please try to go see it. “Miracle In Rwanda” is presented

ehman Center for the Performing Arts and Goya Foods is proud to present the Historic Reunion of SOPHY & FAUSTO REY on Saturday, April 13th, 2019 at 8pm. After more than FOUR decades the international artists of several generations will meet for the first time at Lehman Center to present what will undoubtedly be a historic concert. This concert continues the completion of the first phase of renovations at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. Concert goers will find that the lobbies have been upgraded for ADA compliance with new ramps and carpeting, and

the interior of the theater will have new seating, carpeted aisles, and finished flooring as well. The $15.4 million dollar refurbishment of the Center, which is expected to be completed by mid-2019, will also include 5,400 square feet of enlarged space, with a new main entrance and a redesigned box office, plus new administration offices and restroom facilities on the first and mezzanine floors, and an elevator. The Center seats 2,278 people in the concert hall and is the largest of its kind in the borough. Funding for the project is being provided by the Office of the Governor, the New York State Legislature, the Bronx delegation of the New York City

Council, and the Office of the Bronx Borough President. Additional funding is being raised with a seat naming initiative, which allows community members to make a personal connection with one of New York

City’s most important notfor-profit entertainment venues.

he 2019 National Action Network (NAN) Convention, the largest and most powerful public civil rights conference in the nation, was held April 3-6 at the Sheraton Times Square.

Featuring close to a dozen 2020 presidential candidates, civil rights activists, clergy members, high ranking civil servants, economists, young leaders and stakeholders in the nation gathered to examine and propose solutions to improve the state of civil liberties as well as economic, social and racial justice today, the Convention was a passionate yet analytical, historical yet current, piece of history in the making.

A breath of political oxygen in the polluted atmosphere we are cur-

rently forced to live in!

This 28th NAN Convention was organized in high energy plenary sessions and panel discussions around crucial issues such as criminal justice reform, voting rights, reparation, immigration, health care, education, corporate responsibility, economic equity and more.

Once again NAN shed the light on the fundamental role played by civil rights organizations and grass-roots movements in the shaping and advancing of a Nation’s conscience. “All men are created equal” is a fact and a human right issue. Defending and fighting for this basic principle is the right and the duty of every individual.

All of the 2020 candidates Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Bernie

Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar, Elisabeth Warren, John Hickenlooper, Beto O’Rourke, Pete Buttigieg and Julian Castro as well as Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez, Head of House Democratic Caucus Hakeem Jeffries, legendary Rev. Jesse Jackson and former Attorney General Eric Holder, all

underlined the need for a criminal justice reform in the United States and centered their remarks on economic, social and racial justice and inequality.

Many announced bolder positions on some key issues like defeating the Senate filibustering and supporting a commission to study reparations for slavery. It is in fact high time we

address the fact African American citizens have been deprived of the fair share of the great wealth they created with their free labor during centuries of slavery in this Country and even after that, as free men and women.

“The country will never fully heal until we address the original sin of slavery,” said Castro, who served as

Because, as Ocasio-Cortez put it “It seems to me that so much of this present moment is a revival and a picking up of where King left off.”

Tax Season Tips to Avoid Scammers and Robocalls (Statepoint)

I

t’s tax season. The time of year when phone scammers get particularly aggressive trying to trick you out of your hardearned money. And scam calls and robocalls are a growing problem for everyone. Here are a few tricks to help you dodge scammers and give you peace of mind.

Know the Signs Scam call technology is always changing, so it’s important to stay vigilant against scammers’ attempts to get you to answer your phone. Every year, they make millions off innocent victims with new techniques. Their latest method, known as number-spoofing technology, could fool even the savviest consumers into answering the phone.

Number-spoofing makes a scammer’s number appear as either a familiar number with a local area code or even come up on Caller ID as the “IRS.” If you don’t answer, they may also leave “urgent” callback voicemails via robocalls. Recognizing these tactics can help you stay safe. If you suspect a call (or a voicemail) is a scam, hang up. If you want to be sure, don’t call back the number provided but instead, look up your local IRS Customer Service number on the Internet and call the IRS directly.

Use Protection Tools Check out what technology your wireless company offers that can protect you from scam and spoof calls. For example, T-Mobile offers free scam and spoofing protection for customers with Scam ID

and Scam Block. These tools are made available to all postpaid customers and live on the T-Mobile network, so no app is required. As soon as a call reaches the network, it’s analyzed and if it’s scam, the incoming call is tagged as Scam Likely. If customers want to stop scam calls completely, they can turn on Scam Block. With these tools in place, in the last two years, T-Mobile has alerted customers to over 10 billion Scam Likely calls. And in 2019, T-Mobile reports warning customers of 225 million Scam Likely calls each week. Others wireless providers usually also offer customers app solutions to help identify scam calls for a small monthly fee.

Check with your provider to see what is available.

New standards from the Federal Communications Commission, called STIR/SHAKEN, are also helping protect consumers.

T-Mobile’s implementation of STIR/SHAKEN, Caller Verified, lets you know when a call made on the T-Mobile network is authentic and not intercepted by scammers and spammers. Once other wireless

providers implement STIR/ SHAKEN, Caller Verified will work on calls made across networks.

Know Your Rights While scam-blocking technology can help you filter out scam and spoof calls, it’s also important to know your rights. Many of these calls use intimidation tactics to scare consumers into divulging sensitive information over the phone.

The IRS website notes that they will always make attempts to reach you via postal mail first and they will never ask you for a specific form of payment.

You should know that you always have the right to formally contest the amount owed, and the IRS will not make threats against you or your family regarding arrest or deportation. If you have any elderly or susceptible family members, talk to them about how to avoid such scams and consider setting them up with the latest technology to help them stay safe.

This tax season, be wary about the calls that you receive. With up-todate information and new technology, you can protect your pocketbook from scammers.

emembering Our Past Continuing Our Legacy is the theme of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the 1969 Takeover of City College by the African American and Hispanic Students (formerly the Black and Puerto Rican Student Community) (BPRSC), to correct the racial disparities in the City University of New York (CUNY) system.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, 4pm -8pm, BPRSC Alumni and CCNY Alumni Association will attend a ceremony commemorating the Students accomplishments and demands pre-

sented to the CUNY 50 years ago. The event will be held in the Grand Ballroom of the NAC building, 160 Convent Avenue, an accessible entrance on the CCNY campus. Dr. Vanessa K. Valdes, current Director of the Black Studies Department will be a guest speaker. The celebration is being co-sponsored by the Alumni Association, and the Office of the President, and it is FREE to all CUNY students who joined the protests for racial equality on their campuses, everyone who benefitted from the Open Admissions policy from 1969-1995, and

our beloved community without whose support we could not have survived.

During the celebration on April 17, the Alumni of Harlem University, so named by the BPRSC during the occupation, will pay tribute to all of their fellow students, faculty, staff and community supporters who are now deceased.

In 1969 The City College of New York was a white enclave on the hill of African American and Hispanic Harlem. The student body was 91% white and 9% African American and Hispanic while 40% of High

School students were African American and Hispanic. City College and all branches of (CUNY) had been tuition free since inception funded by the tax dollars of all New York City residents.

Therefore, African American and Hispanic families were paying taxes to fund an elite white institution in their community.

These factors caused the African American and Hispanic Student Community to make the following five demands and shut down the campus when the administration refused to negotiate: · That the racial com-

ou were Crazy in Love.

It happened the first time you heard Beyoncé Knowles, before she won a Grammy, before she added to her life with a man and motherhood. It happened the first time you saw her, a skinny child with a mispronounced name, and in “Queen Bey,” a book of essays edited by Veronica Chambers, you’ll want to say that name again.

“What might a Black girl be in this world?”

That’s a question Veronica Chambers says

she’s spent her lifetime asking. The answer arrived in the songs of a performer who “has no interest in separating herself from the struggle of being a Black woman…” That singer, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, “is the greatest performer alive,” according to Luvvie Ajayi, one essayist here.

When Beyoncé was first seen (on TV’s Star Search in 1993), viewers recognized her talent. Even then, she was “our generation” and that never changed: these days, she’s “named the pain of…

Black women who… love Black men...”

Through her actions and music, she’s shown that “Black men’s apologies to Black women matter.” Writer Ylonda Gault says that there were times when Beyoncé’s life eerily paralleled Gault’s. Meredith Broussard calls Beyoncé “a constant presence in my own life.”

She’s a businesswoman who reportedly has a climate-controlled archive of every print and digital bit of press with her name in it. She’s a writer,

mother, feminist, actress, and award-winner; a “hard-working professional,” a champion for gay rights, an inspiration for young Black girls, and a comfort for women who’ve miscarried. And she’s a

dancer: who among us hasn’t memorized the incredible moves seen in her music videos?

Naysayers and haters might scoff, but for a fan, there’s probably nothing Beyoncé can’t do. Says writer Edward Enninful, “she’s above trends. She can’t be put in a box. Frankly, she can do whatever she wants.”

Let’s stop right here a second: if you barely know who Beyoncé is and can’t name at least five of her songs, you can put your newspaper down now. Go do something else, because this book is not for you.

Come to think, it’s not a book for mere casual fans, either. No, “Queen Bey” is a book for rabid, die-hard, sing-all-the-songs fans who know what the Hive is, and exist in it. It’s for the readers who’ve listened to Beyoncé’s albums and watched all the videos over and over again, because all the contributors to this book have done that, too. It’s for fans who’ve played the “Michael, Whitney, or Beyoncé?” game.

Just beware: this over-the-edge rhetoric here can get excessively florid, sometimes making Knowles-Carter seem like a deity, and that lack of perspective can mar the messages behind the outpouring of love.

Readers with a tendency to roll their eyes might do that here, Beyoncé fan or not.

Keep that in mind when you see this book. If you’re a sometime follower, you’ll probably be happier just taking a pass. If you can’t get enough of “Queen Bey,” you’ll like it and you shoulda put a bookmark in it.
