Breaking Ground And Comunilife Open New Supportive Housing At La Central In The Bronx

Breaking Ground’s supportive housing at La Central brings the non-profit’s total unit count to 3,800 supportive and affordable apartments across New York City and beyond and La Central is Breaking Ground’s seventh residence under management in the Bronx.

“We are thrilled that 97 formerly homeless persons and 63 low-income New Yorkers will call this beautiful Residence their home,” said Rosa M.Gil, DSW, President and CEO, Comunilife Inc. “I am confident that the services provided with funding from City and State agencies will help our tenants lead happy and stable lives while becoming active members of the community. We have been delighted to partner with Breaking Ground and would like to thank all the elected and appointed officials who helped make possible and Comunilife’s Board of Directors for understanding the vision behind La central development.”

Bronx Borough President Diaz, who contributed 1.5 million in capital funding, thanked Breaking Grounds, Comunilife, the State and City agencies, and elected officials who came together to make this project come to life.

“La Central is a landmark project which looks to improve the neighborhood for existing residents while making way for the future of our growing borough,” said BP Diaz. “This portion of the development adds much needed supportive housing to The South Bronx because we wanted to ensure that the most vulnerable individuals in our community can benefit from the new housing stock in the area.”

Breaking Ground’s supportive housing residence features 161 units – 97 units

for formerly homeless individuals and persons living with HIV/AIDS, 63 units for low-income working adults making at or below 60% of the Area Median Income, and one superintendent unit.

The building features ultra-efficient fixtures and water-saving appliances, a green roof and landscaped roof terrace, and roof-mounted solar panels that will provide energy savings and reduce reliance on municipal energy supply. In addition, the building also includes a 4,500 square foot accessory community facility space. The building was designed by FXCollaborative and MHG Architects.

The general contractor was Monadnock Construction, Inc. “As the first building completed in the La Cen-

tral development, Breaking Ground’s facility sets the tone for sustainability, design, and equity for this neighborhood-within-a-neighborhood.

With its expressive corner tower, welcoming two-story entry, and crafted façade, we expect that it will be well-loved by residents and neighbors alike,” said Dan Kaplan, FAIA, LEED AP, Senior Partner of FXCollaborative.

In December 2013, the City of New York announced that the multi-property La Central development would bring nearly 1,000 units of mixed-income affordable housing built in phases to the Bronxchester Urban Renewal site in the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx.

Bordered by Bergen Avenue, Brook Avenue and East 149th Street, La Central will encompass five buildings of mixed-income affordable housing, along with a host of retail, community and recreation spaces including a new YMCA. The remainder of the project is being developed and managed by partners BRP Development Corporation, Hudson Companies Inc., The Kretchmer

Companies, ELH Mgmt LLC, and the YMCA of Greater New York.

The 1.1 million-squarefoot La Central development will consist of a 50,000-square-foot state-ofthe-art YMCA, a new home for BronxNet Television Studios, a public skatepark, and a rooftop telescope operated by the Bronx High School of Science.

In addition, La Central will include new community and retail space to serve residents and the surrounding neighborhoods. Breaking Ground’s building is the first to complete construction at this major community revitalization project.

La Central, located at Bergen Avenue and East 152nd Street, adds to Breaking Ground’s growing Bronx portfolio. With the completion of La Central, Breaking Ground now manages 3,800 affordable units for formerly homeless and low-income New Yorkers. Additionally, Breaking Ground has nearly 1,000 units of affordable and supportive housing in various stages of development in New York City.

reaking Ground, New York’s largest supportive housing developer, along with its partner Comunilife, Inc. late last month celebrated the opening of its new 161-unit supportive residence, part of the La Central large-scale mixed-use project in the Bronx.

Breaking Ground’s new residence brings 161 units of permanent affordable supportive housing to La Central, as part of nearly 1,000 mixed-income apartments that will be built at the site by a team spearheaded by the Hudson Companies and BRP Development Corporation, in addition to new retail, community, and recreation spaces.

Brenda Rosen, President and CEO of Breaking Ground said that they are extremely pleased to be part of the transformative La Central development in ensuring that low-income and homeless individuals have a place to call home.

Working for the census will allow you to help out your community and earn money at the same time.

The U.S. Census helps determine each state’s representation in Congress, how funds are spent for schools, hospitals, and roads, and provides information to guide many decisions made by government agencies, private businesses and institutions.

Jobs within the census vary from working in the field canvassing, updating maps, doing follow-up interviews with citizens in your community, or working in an office as a clerk doing administrative tasks or office operation supervisor who oversees the field staff.

26TH-ANNUAL HARLEM HOLIDAY LIGHTS EVENT November 20th

t a recent event, held at Settepani Restaurant on Malcolm X Blvd., the president and CEO of the 125th Street Business Improvement District, Barbara Askins, officially kicked-off the countdown to the 26th annual Harlem Holiday Lights 2019 celebration. This year the highly anticipated holiday event, which is held in partnership with Manhattan Community Board #9 and #10, and dubbed, Harlem Light It Up 2019, will take place on November 20th (rain date/Nov. 25th), with activities planned throughout the day, leading up to the highlight - the Parade of Lights that will herald the lighting of the legendary 125th St. corridor beginning at Morningside Avenue and 125th St. and covering a 10-block stretch.

Over the years, the event has become a prominent part of the city’s key holiday celebrations, attracting both public and media attention. Ms. Askins, who has been responsible for organizing and helping to make this event an annual tradition says, “We want to make it bigger and better every year. We want this holiday event in our community, to be something that everyone in the city will want to be a part of.”

This year’s three distinguished Grand Marshals are: Laiona Michelle, an actor/ singer/writer who made her Broadway debut in the 2015 hit musical Amazing Grace and recently broke box-office records at the George Street Playhouse with her performance as Nina Simone, in Little Girl Blue, a musical that she both wrote and headlined. Ms. Michelle is now the book writer on a new musical headed for Broadway in 2020, based on the life of Nelson Mandela.

Korey Wise, one of the Central Park Five, a public speaker

and social justice activist, who has risen to prominence since the Five were acquitted and released from prison for a crime they did not commit. His story has been a key factor in the public and critical acclaim that the Netflix miniseries, directed by Ava Duvernay, “When They See Us,” has received.

Leah Abraham is an Ethiopian-American entrepreneur who brings a dynamic multi-cultural foundation to everything she does, and who has elegantly traversed work-life balance to establish a successful business in the community. This amazing woman has found numerous ways to give back to the Harlem community through her passionate commitment to the business she has helped establish, Settepani Restaurant.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT Included among the numerous planned activities surrounding the Harlem Holiday Lights 2019 event, is the return participation of Disney’s Marvel Superheroes; this year, Spiderman and Black Panther will be on hand for meet and greets, photo opportunities, and special appearances at various planned activities throughout the day. They will also be part of the big countdown to the Parade of Lights signaling the lighting of the 125th Street corridor.

Gale Brewer, a big supporter of this event, will host her annual VIP Reception. Manhattan Community Board #9’s Children’s District will honor the 100th anniversary celebration of the Harlem Renaissance with featured guest, the Swing Dance Society, in addition they will have face painting, an appearance by the Snow Queen, and much more for the children.

The Health & Fitness District, sponsored by Emblem Health, Blink Fitness, Ryan Health and Zwanger Perisi will once again set up free health screenings and will provide access to important information promoting a healthier lifestyle for the entire family. Blink Fitness will be hosting an invigorating early morning workout, and Zwanger, a premier radiology company that has joined the 125th Street BID District, will host an open house reception and tour of their newest uptown facility.

Among the new participants this year – the Curvy District by Lov n My Curves will host a series of events including a fashion show featuring plus-size models and meet and greets sponsored by 125th Street retailers Ashley Stewart and Lane Bryant whose audience is primarily the plus-size woman. An ensemble of thirty plus-sized models in outfits inspired by, and looking much like the Radio City Rockettes, will be on hand for photos opps, meet and

greets, and appearances at the various events. Also, joining the celebration for the first time this year will be the Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage, United House of Prayer for All People, the Mali Music Festival, NYCHA Digital Education Van, Joshua Balloons, who will donate a Balloon Selfie Frame set up, Carver Bank, and Industrial Bank (formerly City National Bank) will host a reception.

Property owners along the 125th Street location will add to the festive atmosphere by decorating their properties in appropriate holiday decor. The 125th Street corridor will be buzzing with both in-store and outdoor activities.

Broadway actress and singer Rema Webb will be the stage manager for the New York City Parks and Recreation Community Stage that will feature acts that include Classical Theater of Harlem, NYCHA, Michelle Sweeting, RAM, Tyrick, Evan Cole, Diva Nation, Funk Revolution Uptown Dance Academy, Jacqueline Constant, Rudeal Drears, Lady Meeka and much more.

This year’s Parade of Lights will have a caravan of 10 floats – each sponsored by a Harlem community organization, local political leaders, community boards, as well as members of the local businesses community. Each float will be festooned with lights and alive with the sound of music and merriment befitting the season.

The three Grand Marshals will be the special guest on the BID float along with the Marvel Characters and the Rockettes inspired curvy models. Add to that 8 totally blinged-out Slingshot cars from the Sling Kingz, and the Parade of Lights is complete.

As the floats move down 125th Street from Morningside heading east, the spectacular, well-orchestrated lighting of 125th Street will be activated.

“The participation this year has hit a new high,” says Ms. Askins.

“We are thankful to all of the businesses and all of our community representatives and organizations that are helping us blow this event out. The historic community of Harlem deserves the kind of attention that is often relegated to the downtown communities,” she added.

The Harlem Holiday Lights/ Light it Up 2019 activities will start on the morning of November 20th and will continue throughout the entire day along 125th Street.

The parade route covers 10 blocks along the 125th Street corridor beginning at Morningside heading east and will circle back up 125th Street to Broadway, looping around to end up where it began.

The 125th Street Business Improvement District, created in 1993, is managed by the 125th Street District Management Association. Property and business owners, community and government leaders, residents and staff, all work closely together to improve the experiences of those who live, work, visit and invest in the Harlem Community. The 125th Street BID seeks to: catalyze economic development; encourage the going revitalization and promotion of 125th street as a premier art, culture and entertainment destination; facilitate active tourism; increase pedestrian mobility and give the streetscape a cohesive modern appearance, while reducing clutter; develop additional public space; include public art throughout the district; and create a high quality urban environment that contributes to an identity for the Harlem community.

Urbanology: The Harlem Arts Gallery

or over 25 years artist and residents of the Harlem Community considered the second-floor art gallery in the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Harlem State Office Building located at 163 West 125th Street the Harlem Art Gallery: thanks to Gregory Javan Mills the Curator of the 2nd floor art gallery.

The Studio Museum in Harlem had been the curator of the 2nd floor art gallery until 1991 when state funding for the art gallery

was drastically cut.

Mr. Mills was no stranger to the 2nd floor art gallery because as a founding member of the Museum of African American Cinema he started the Black Film Festival at the art gallery in 1985. In the beginning the festival would show a black film once a month, the festival became so successful that films started to be shown twice a month.

Many people were not aware of the many positive all black movies filmed in the 20’s and the 30’s. Ralph Cooper who started the Apollo Amateur Hour in 1934, was a well know black cowboy actor in his early years. The Black Film Festival was both educational and entertaining.

his work with the International Agency for Minority Artist Affairs (IAMAA), an organization he founded in 1979 while a student at the New York School of Visual Arts.

Mills created IAMAA to help artist learn the business of art. Mills being an artist realized that many of the creative artist of color that he knew had no idea of how to run a business. When Mills was offered the position of Curator for the Harlem State Office Building’s art gallery in 1991, he said it was an offer he could not refuse. Even though funding for the position was a bare minimum Mills understood the position would give his organization the opportunity to provide a greater service to artist.

Since 1991 Greg Mills has curated over 400 art exhibitions giving 100’s of artist a free space to exhibit their works along with advice in business management for those who needed it. The cost of art exhibit gallery space can be very expensive for the past twenty-five years the Harlem Art Gallery became an important steppingstone in the careers of many artist by providing free gallery space Greg Mills have helped young artist create solo art exhibits, he has help plan group artist exhibitions as well as initiating special Curator’s group art exhibitions with artists and initiating special Curators’ group art exhibitions including one in 2011 that included over 100 artist in

a five part series in tribute to the artist Michel Basquiat entitled “Conjuration”. In 2008 coordinated a special visual exhibit in the gallery honoring Newly elected president Barack Obama entitled “Profound Audacity” In 2014 Greg Mills co curated a group art visual art exhibition with seventeen artist and cultural performers in a full artistic tribute to Trayvon Martin entitled “17: The Revolution Will Be Visualized”.

In 2018 Mills was informed by the State Office of General Services that he would no longer be the

Curator for the 2nd Floor Art Gallery to the shock of many Harlem Residence and artist of color throughout the tri-state area.

“The Pretty One: On Life, Pop Culture, Disability, and Other Reasons to Fall in Love with Me” by Keah Brown REVIEW by Terri Schlichenmeyer, Harlem News contributor

I

t’s what’s inside that counts.

There’s a sentiment you’ve heard since you were a small child: don’t judge someone by their outward appearances. Look at their mind, see their heart, know who they are before you decide how you’ll act. As in the new book “The Pretty One” by Keah Brown, look past what they can’t do, and see what they can.

Keah Brown is cute.

Check it: #DisabledAndCute.

It wasn’t always that way: for much of her life, she’s “felt average, plain and wrong” and sometimes embarrassed but today, she

loves her body despite her cerebral palsy.

And why not? She can’t escape it, nor does she want to; in fact, she says her “disability is not a thing to see past but instead a thing to acknowledge and accept...”

You don’t even have to pretend to be PC with Brown; euphemisms, she believes, are for the discomforted able-bodied, not for those with a disability.

You can, however, apologize for the way people like her are treated when they’re minding their own business, living their lives. Strangers, for example, often approach Brown with unsolicited cures for her CP, but she’d

rather we all use our energy to help ensure Black people with disabilities aren’t “invisible.”

Even better: make sure that nobody who’s Black is invisible. Period.

Brown grew up with a brother and a twin sister and she was treated the same as they were; she was a kid who just needed to take breaks, that’s all, no big deal. Well into grade-school before she realized that she had a disability; she still remembers the boy who made fun of her, who cruelly pointed out her CP. She wonders if he remembers what he did that day, because she surely does.

In this book, Brown writes with sorrow about the years she wasted being jealous of her able-bodied sister, and with gratefulness that they’re close now. She tells of the simple “freedom” that comes with figuring out how to style her own hair, and she wonders when she might find romance. If she can love herself, then surely someone else “will follow suit.”

No doubt, “The Pretty One” is a quirky kind of memoir.

When laying things out plainly, there aren’t many people more straightforward than author Keah Brown.

She talks candidly about her

disability, no beating around the bush or hinting at any-

thing, and facts are slapped on the table like a palm.

There’s a dash of humor inside some of her chapters, and solid rants elsewhere.

On the other hand, readers will find some weird, weird things in this book, including a chapter in which Brown gives human names to furniture; and extended references to some pretty off-the-beaten-path pop culture. Neither these, nor frequent repetition will endear readers to this book.

And yet, the overall narrative is quite eye-opening, especially for able-bodied readers who squirm in the presence of a wheelchair or a disability. Brown admits that she doesn’t speak for everybody, but “The Pretty One” has a lot to say inside.

What Everyone Should Know About Colorectal Cancer Screenings (Statepoint)

C

olorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men and in women in the U.S., making screening one of the most important preventive health measures to take as an adult. While no one relishes cancer screenings, new recommendations can help those of average risk for colorectal cancer learn more about the importance of screenings, and the most effective strategy for completing them.

Recently published in “Annals of Internal Medicine,” a new evidence-based guidance statement from the American College of Physicians (ACP) says that physicians should screen for colorectal cancer in average-risk adults who do not have symptoms be-

tween the ages of 50 and 75, and that the frequency of screening depends upon the screening approach.

“Not enough people in the United States get screened for colorectal cancer,” says ACP president, Dr. Robert M. McLean.

“Physicians should perform an individualized risk assessment for colorectal cancer in all adults. Doctors and patients should select the screening test based on a discussion of the benefits, harms, costs, availability, frequency and patient preferences.”

ACP suggests any one of the following screening strategies: • Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) or high sensitivity guaiac-based fecal occult blood test (gFOBT) every two years • Colonoscopy every 10 years

HARLEM COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS Racially Discriminatory Legislation and Policies Must Be Stopped The Unintended Consequences of a Menthol Cigarette Ban to Black America From pro-slavery laws to Jim Crow, to Prohibition, to racial profiling, to Stop-and-Frisk, history is clear: racist laws and discriminatory bans have been devastating for Black America.

Today, Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP) and National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) have joined together with other African-American law enforcement executives to call on you - our readers in Black communities across the nation - to see the warning signs of yet another proposed racially discriminatory law: the menthol cigarette ban.

It is a well-known fact that over 85 percent of African Americans who smoke prefer menthol cigarettes. There is no factual basis to assert that a menthol cigarette ban will stop African Americans from smoking. In fact, the unintended consequences of such a raciallydiscriminatory ban will set the stage for more negative and more likely counterproductive interactions between law enforcement and African Americans.

While proponents argue that a menthol cigarette ban could encourage menthol cigarette smokers to quit smoking cold-turkey, another possible outcome could be extremely dangerous—the creation of an illicit market. If this happens, illegal sales of menthol cigarettes will likely be concentrated in communities of color, leading to a greater police presence, citations, fines, and arrests for selling a product that for the past 50 years has been legal.

Possible bans on menthol cigarettes are now being considered throughout the United States as add-ons to e-cigarette bans. It must be said that while FDA has deemed teen vaping an “epidemic,” there is no teen menthol cigarette epidemic. The fact is teen cigarette use has steadily been on the decline over the past decade.

Recently in New York, the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner courageously issued a public statement warning against the consequences of a proposed menthol cigarette ban. Sybrina Fulton and Gwendolyn Carr stated, “When you ban a product sold mostly in Black communities, you must consider the reality of what will happen to that very same over-represented community in the criminal justice system.”

Law enforcement leaders like Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP), National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), Grand Council of Guardians, and National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers (NABLEO) have stated countless times that a ban on menthol cigarettes will have unintended negative consequences, especially for African Americans.

Over the past 30 years, we have reduced tobacco consumption overall across this country by about 40 percent. And we did not do that with the criminal justice community. We did that with education, we did it with treatment, we did it from a health and educational perspective. Let’s continue with that. Let’s not do something that’s going to end up with these unintended consequences of increasing interaction between police and community members.

That’s what cops do, and we trust that those laws are well thought out, studied and based upon sound data and evidence. As we begin to mirror the days of alcohol prohibition with tobacco bans, expect the violence and corruption that comes with the illicit market and add something else, the over criminalization of the black community.”

Jiles Ship, President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives – New Jersey (NOBLE): “Banning menthol cigarettes would be a 21st Century attempt at Prohibition, a past failure of government to restrict a previously legal product. As we learned with Prohibition, every time the government tries to ban something, it seems to cause other problems. And unfortunately, a menthol cigarette ban would be another example of government action that disproportionately disrupts the Black community.”

Charles Billips, National Chair Person of Grand Council of Guardians, “The first question I asked is how are they going to implement this ban on menthol cigarettes, knowing that a large number of Black and Brown people smoke menthol cigarettes? It would be best to educate the communities on the affect it has on our health instead of a ban enforced through Law Enforcement.”

As The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once prophetically said, “The time is always right to do what is right.” And the right thing to do for our families and communities and for all who stand for freedom, justice and equality is to speak out against all forms of racial discrimination and disproportionate law enforcement, as well as the systems, laws, bans and policies that perpetuate them.

. Philip Randolph Campus High School (APRCHS) has a rich, historic legacy in New York City’s Harlem Community. Throughout the years, APRCHS has provided solutions to address the specific needs of its diverse college bound student population. With a new and dedicated alumni relations director, successful and talented alumni will be engaged and empowered to help sustain and preserve the history and future of the historical Harlem landmark.

Together with Sound Business Inc. (SBI), APRCHS has become known as an “Inclusive Grassroots Cooperative” (IGC). SBI’s program at APRCHS creates a joint effort that supports the students. The school community, with the structure creat-

ed by this IGC, help define priorities for the school and its students. The partnership and presence of SBI, a non-profit organization, has improved college aspirations for APRCHS students.

The school, which has been at risk of closing over the years as many other NYC historically brown and black public schools have closed, continues to see more than 90% of its graduates attend college and steady daily attendance rate of 90% or better throughout the academic year. While there are a multitude of alumni success stories that can serve as positive and inspirational examples to current and future students that will walk the same hallways, record keeping and lack of alumni engagement has created a disconnect with the school.

On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, SBI is hosting APRCHS’ 40th Anniversary Awards Benefit Dinner to help renew “Campus Cougar” pride, boost Alumni Engagement and bring awareness to the much needed historic preservation of the school. Located on the City College of New York (CCNY) campus in Harlem, the school’s Collegiate Gothic style was designed between 1924-1926 by William H. Gompert, Architect & Superintendent of School Buildings for the New York City Board of Education. In 1997, the historic building was designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission.

A. Philip Randolph Campus High School (APRCHS) is a four-year public high school in New York City. It is

located in Harlem, adjacent to the City College of New York. It occupies a landmark building formerly occupied

by The High School of Music & Art. APRCHS occupies a building designed in the Collegiate Gothic style

by William H. Gompert, Architect & Superintendent of School Buildings for the New York City Board of Education.

Constructed from 1924 to 1926, the building opened for the New York Training School for Teachers, established in 1898 to provide elementary school teachers for the Board of Education. The Training School became the New York Teachers Training College in 1931, but a surplus of teachers during the Depression led to the dissolution of the school in 1933.

In the case of APRCHS, SBI focused on academic enrichment, comprehensive college access services, theatre production and performing arts, all aimed at preparing students socio-culturally and academically for post secondary educational and career opportunities. SBI has, over the years, designed customized programs and improved access to four-year institutions for Black and Latino students at APRCHS. A case study conducted by Dr. Stephanie Akunvabey, is the first formal investigation of SBI, providing an in-depth look at the relationship between an in-house non-profit organization and a NYC public high school.

The program’s ability to address socio-cultural and attitudinal needs of students has ultimately improved college access.
