Happy New Year!

It has been easy for me to make my new year resolution this year. My doctor told me if I did not change my lifestyle and eating I am headed for renal kidney failure.

My reaction to that is that I was and continue to be "Scared Straight." Fortunately there are ways to repair a damaged kidney that involve drinking plenty of water and eating lots of berries, cabbage, etc., as well as keeping your sugar and blood pressure in check.

Of course these things are easier said than done. But I have gotten my "wake up call" and my #1 new year resolution.

Family of Black Doctors Has Social Media Buzzing

D

r. Herbert Oye is a Board Certified Endovascular and Vascular Surgeon, specializing in invasive and non-invasive treatment of vascular diseases.

Dr. Oye received his medical degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, according to his official biography.

His General Surgery residence was performed at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, an affiliate of Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Dr. Oye completed his fellowship training in advanced vascular and endovascular surgery at the

Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Perhaps, most impressive is that each of Dr. Oye’s four children followed in their father’s footsteps.

David, Monique, Michelle, and Melissa Oye, each said they were inspired by their father and all have become doctors.

“Our dad, Dr. Herbert Oye, is a Nigerian immigrant. Upon moving to the United States, he attended medical school and has worked tirelessly to build his own Vascular Surgery practice,” the young physicians wrote in a statement on Facebook.

43rd Three Kings Day Parade Honors Immigrant Communities Marisol Rodríguez

This year the parade was dedicated to New York City immigrant and migrant communities, past and present.

NYS Senator José M. Serrano was at El Museo to celebrate and felt this recognition was significant. “When you consider that over the last couple of years we’ve seen a major assault on the whole notion of immigration and that many in the immigrant community are living in fear and are suffering, I think it’s important that the cultural institutions and elected officials are working together to shine a light,” said Serrano. One of Serrano’s current initiatives, along with other local elected officials, is to make sure the immigrant community is accurately counted during the 2020 Census in order to receive the re-

he streets of East Harlem once again became the center of celebration of Three Kings Day, a cultural and religious tradition popular throughout Latin America. For the 43rd year El Museo del Barrio hosted the annual Three Kings Day Parade on Monday, January 6.

The event began with a breakfast at El Museo to honor community leaders. District 8 Councilwoman Diana Ayala took the stage and offered gratitude to the cultural institution that has kept this tradition alive. “I want to thank El Museo for carrying on the tradition and ensuring that all of our Nuyorican kids that were born here and know nothing about los tres reyes get to know about them.” said Ayala.

Honorary Kings this year included Julissa Arce, author, activist and founder of the Ascend Educational Fund; Elba Cabrera, Arts & Culture Advocate; and Ernesto Quiñonez, novelist and author of Bodega Dreams. Paul Mondesire was at the event supporting his mother and honorary king Elba Cabrera, who migrated to New York from Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1938. Mondesire expressed pride in his mother’s dedication to uplifting the community through the arts and all of the immigrants like her who have paved the way: “We helped to build this city, whether people are from Puerto Rico or Mexico, Central or South America, Africa or Europe, we built this country and on this three kings day everyone should be proud of our contributions,” said

Mártir is a Puerto Rican activist who grew up in different places due to his father being in the army. His early memory of the holiday were

in Germany setting up the hay and water for the Kings to bring him presents. Now he carries this tradition on with his daughter Lola.

On September 21, Mártir dj’ed an event at El Museo honoring Puerto Rico and all those affected by Hurricane Maria. “I feel culturally I’m an immigrant, everything I do is dedi-

cated to that. My whole purpose in life is to preserve and progress the culture so everything I do is surrounding that,” said Mártir.

Make Planning to Pay for College a New Year’s Resolution (Statepoint)

hen it comes to financial resolutions, a new survey suggests that creating a plan to pay for college should be top of mind for more families.

Only 54 percent of parents are comfortable with their plan to pay for their child’s college education, according to a College Ave Students Loan survey conducted

by Barnes & Noble College Insights.

As you solidify your New Year’s resolutions, consider the following financial strategies: • Apply for reputable scholarships and grants early and often. One easy one to apply for is the College Ave Student

Loans $1,000 Monthly Scholarship Sweepstakes.

• Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), even if your family has a high income. Doing so is the only way to access the big pool of financial aid available from the U.S. Department of Education, which awards over $120 billion annually in the form of scholarships, grants, work-study programs and loans. What’s more, states and some individual schools use it to determine aid packages as well.

• Ask family members to gift or contribute toward the cost of education.

• Fine-tune the college application process

to save money. For example, zero in on state schools for in-state tuition, or schools where your child’s grades and SAT scores are above average to boost the likelihood of receiving merit aid.

• Ninety-one percent of parents currently help or plan to help their child pay for college and 75 percent of parents expect their child to help pay, which means that for most families, a candid discussion about what you can afford and how much you expect him or her to contribute is essential.

Taoism: A survival Tool for the 21st Century

T

aoism is an ancient philosophy that still has a tremendous influence in today’s world. We find more and more people utilizing Taoist strategies in the areas of health, and the development of business, organizational as well as personal relationships. There is a great deal of information that now links the Taoist philosophy to both China and Africa. Korea is not always thought of when the concept of Taoism is dis-

cussed. Yet the South Korean National flag has the Taoist yin and yang symbol along with four of the Taoist eight gates. I was trained as a Taoist master in Korea.

The Taoist Eight Gates represent the foundation of life which is the movement of energy. Yin a broken line (-----) and Yang a solid line (-------) are positive and negative lines that can be configured into eight different tri-grams.

For example three yin lines represent earth, three yang lines represent heaven, two yin lines and one yang line represent water and two yang lines and one yin line represent fire. They are the four gates on the Korean national flag. The other four yin and yang tri-gram configurations are wind, mountain, thunder

and lake.

At first this might seem confusing but when you consider the fact that the Taoist yin and yang energy concept has been used to bring balance to the body, mind and spirit for centuries, it becomes less complicated the more you become aware of how it works. Books such as the I Ching and the Art of War have been used as strategic tools to develop many of the major world achievements in health and science to include information technology and DNA mapping and research.

he health benefits of regular exercise are undeniable, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 30 minutes of exercise at least five times per week.

However, high-impact exercises like running and weight training can lead to joint pain, especially if you have a joint condition. The good news is that smart exercises with low impact can alleviate joint pain and deliver the same health benefits.

Here are a few tips to consider for a healthy start to 2020: Keep Moving Trying to protect your joints by not moving actually does more harm than good. Regular exercise can actually help joint pain and ease symptoms of chronic joint conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Just be sure to talk to your doctor about your exercise plan before you get started.

Go Low Impact You don’t need to put tremendous weight on your joints or jump up and down in order to break a sweat or elevate your heartrate. When you’re already in pain, this type of exercise can actually make things worse. Instead, opt for high-quality, low-impact workouts.

There are now exercise machines available for home use that provide the same quality low-impact workout you’d get

Reservations were made in your name and all that’s left is packing. Yep, you’re heading out for the weekend, a week, a month, gone on the trip of a lifetime and as you’ll see in “Overground Railroad” by Candacy Taylor, it’s a trip your grandparents might’ve been denied.

Ron was just 7 years old when he was told to sit still and be quiet in the backseat of his parents car, where he listened as a police officer questioned his father by a country road. Even when he was an old man and stepdad to Candacy Taylor, he remembered the tension coming from the

front seat of that car.

Her stepfather’s stories helped Taylor understand many things, including why he and Black folks his age preferred to travel at night, on side roads. At about this same time, Taylor’s white friends began expressing outrage over white supremacists and she replied with facts about incarceration of black men. To her, the three histories were one: Black people have always been denied equality.

In the twentieth century, that inequality largely resulted from Jim Crow laws which, among other humiliations, allowed restaurants, hotels, and gas stations to refuse service to Black travelers. On the road, brave or desperate

African Americans risked violence or even death by testing the laws; in years following the Depression, those laws gave Victor Green an idea.

Green lived in Harlem, worked as a mailman, and saw a future where Black people owned cars (rare, in the 1930s) they could insure (also rare). With help from other mailmen, information on Black-owned businesses that Black travelers could visit was gathered and published in a book that was initially Harlem-centric. Subsequent editions of The Green Book led African American travelers to safe restaurants, hotels, and gas stations across the country.

Says Taylor, Green never made much money from his

project, but “his reward was much more valuable… for every business he listed, he may have saved a life.”

As a history of African American travel in the Twentieth Century, “Overground Railroad” is incredible, filled with great continuity and plenty of side-stories to make it come alive. Author Candacy Taylor makes it exquisitely personal with tales from her stepfather and her deep appreciation for all he’d endured, leading to other stories of DWB; how the travel industry foolishly thwarted African American travel and its buying power; how things changed; and the constant reassurance of The Green Book.

That history makes this

book incredibly fascinating.

It could’ve been even better, had Taylor stuck with the topic.

Instead, occasionally and from the beginning, mass incarceration and institutional racism are inserted into this narrative on travel. One could perhaps argue that they’re peripherally relevant but, though it’s not overwhelming, that feels like a discussion for a different book.

Still, ignore the distraction.

Don’t let it chase you away from this stellar tale, told with detail and an abundance of photos. If you’re looking for a lively, well-rounded history book, “Overground Railroad” is just the ticket.
