Happy New Year! I am celebrating 25 years publishing this year. I cannot believe I have been publishing “Good News You Can Use” for 25 years now.

I celebrated Kwanzaa with my family in Savannah, Ga this past weekend. That’s right for those of you who do not know – I am a Georgia Peach from a huge family in Savannah. I always joke with people if they are from Savannah, they are probably part of my

family – Stevenson, Sloman, Tatum, Sullivan, Shank, Gatrell, Green, Maloney and Branham, etc. My family has celebrated Kwanzaa for several years. My uncle took me to my first Kwanzaa celebration in the 80’s. It is a great way for a family to get together and celebrate and embrace the seven principles of Kwanzaa.

Healthfirst Spread Holiday Cheer by Distributing 3,000 Toys to Children and Families

H

ealthfirst brought holiday cheer and shared the gift of giving and community spirit with residents at Claremont Village in the Bronx on Thursday. Healthfirst, along with Councilman Rev. Ruben Diaz, Sr. and Council Member, Vanessa L. Gibson distributed 1,000 toys to neighborhood children and families, who also enjoyed craft making, face painting, and a visit by Santa. The holiday celebration and toy distribution is one of the many ways that Healthfirst demonstrates its commitment to the community.

“At this time of year it is even more important to ensure that people are connecting and not feeling lonely or left out,” said Errol Pierre, Senior Vice President, State Plans, Healthfirst. “Engaging in

holiday and cultural traditions help people feel a sense of belonging, remind us of who we are, what we mean to each other, and how we can help one another, all of which can have in impact on one’s health and well-being which is why Healthfirst feels it is important to host these celebrations.”

The event was co-hosted by Claremont Neighborhood Center, Inc. and William Hodson Senior Center and was made possible with the help of Healthfirst employees, volunteers and local residents.

Tips for the Best Financial You in the New Year (Statepoint)

t the same time that Americans are feeling the financial pinch of the holidays, they’re gearing up for 2020, with their top two goals being to save more and increase their credit scores, according to a national consumer survey by Experian.

Almost three out of four consumers surveyed are motivated to improve their finances. To reach their New Year goals, survey respondents say they’ll spend less money to improve their credit score (59%) and pay off credit card debt (58%).

To help get you started, Experian Boost ambassador, actor and financial empowerment activist, Hill Harper is providing these money tips:

• Create a Financial Blueprint: The first step is to create a blueprint identifying your money, saving and investing goals. Examine your priorities and determine how much money you require to meet your basic needs. From there, you should assess what else you need to be happy and how you can use money as a resource to achieve it.

• Assess the Cost of Being You: If your expenses or debt outpace your income, then it’s very difficult to live the best version of your life. Rather than continuously playing catch-up, track your spending to discover new ways to reduce monthly expenses.

PONDER THIS! A Second Time Around

ave you given thought to how many times you’ve had a second time around? There are second times that are like the wind. It can knock you off your feet, take you to your knees in lamentation.

On September 23, 2019, I received the

same medical diagnosis I had been given twenty-five years ago. Kidney cancer then and kidney cancer once again. Back then, it was discovered under emergency circumstances, this time, I had a month of tests and consultations to get to the final decision of how to move forward.

Having time is not always the best scenario. The mind can be a wicked creative force with thoughts that are not helpful or beneficial. To counteract the doubtful menace of the mind, I had to dig deep within the cave of faith that had kept me for decades. Jesus was with me then and I knew the

Lord would not forsake me now. It would be his will and his way. I had to prayerfully prepare to take the ride.

I felt humbled and honored to tell everybody what God had already done for me.

Prayers were lifted on my behalf from friends and family who believed in a God that can do more than we could ask or imagine. God’s love came upon my life in ways that I had not experienced. Unexpected acts of kindness and graciousness poured out daily to me though encouraging words and inspirational messages.

Many say, I have been granted a mighty miracle. My personal preference is this is what God did by his grace, unearned favor, sent down to me. I be-

lieve God inclined his ear as Jesus interceded for me. As a blessing, I have been given another opportunity to reflect in an attitude of gratitude on what has taken place for me, for whatever the reason. I believe God has granted me a second chance to use to greater heights, what he had already put in my hand.

I cannot complete this writing without a little humor. As the anesthesia was moving steadily through my vein, I asked if I could see the robot. The doctor chuckled and began to move me faster toward the operating room. He said, look quickly to the left as we

enter, and you may get to see it.

Lo and behold, as my eyes began to close, I saw the alien body with five angled arms, standing in preparation for its instructions. I heard myself speak to it, “Go forth God’s mighty creation of technology, do what you were made to do in the name of Jesus.”

Evolving and Bonding on the Ice Marisol Rodríguez

or Harlem-native Ila Epperson turning six marked a unique rite of passage. Encouraged by her older cousin, she became one of the hundreds of girls who have joined Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH), an organization that utilizes the Olympic sport along with academic enrichment, to empower Black and Brown youth from Harlem and the Bronx.

Epperson has been in the program now for 11 years and admits that it took time for her to truly fall in love with figure skating. “Skating in my opinion is the hardest sport ever because not only do you have to be graceful, but you have to be

opportunities to navigate the world around them,” commented Walker.

Sharon Cohen founded FSH in 1997 after being asked to teach figure skating uptown by community youth and in 2016 the program expanded to the city of Detroit.

“The program gives them tremendous confidence in themselves, helps them get to know themselves and have high expectations on and off the ice.” A former competitive figure skater, Cohen was a skating coach for over 10 years before exclusively focusing on her administrative role: “I love seeing girls learn to skate because it’s a really hard thing to do and when they get something, it gets them really excited, and that gets me excited.”

Jeremie shared a recent experience where 6-year-old Zoë used her words to confront a bully and advocate for herself. Jeremie also loves the program’s emphasis on inclusion in figure skating. At a recent synchronized skating competition in Connecticut the FSH team was the only one comprised of Black and Brown youth. FSH Synchro Skills 1 team took home first place with their performance to a medley from the Lion King.

Ila Epperson will soon age out of the program, although she is certain she will stay connected to FSH and the friends she’s made throughout her life.

Kwanzaa 2019 at The American Museum of Natural History

n a mildly cold Saturday afternoon, thousands gathered at the American Museum of Natural History for Kwanzaa 2019. The museum has taken part in celebrating the holiday for over 35 years.

Kwanzaa is a holiday created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, in 1966. Dr. Karenga felt that African Americans living outside of the motherland, were detached from much of the African culture and values.

Using concepts from several African harvest celebrations he created the holiday.

Over the last 15 years, the event has been produced by Voza Rivers of Community Works NYC. Speaking on the event and how it influences those in attendance, Mr. Rivers said

“The principles of Kwanzaa are principles that people can live by. It’s spirituality. It’s like going to church.

The message of Kwanzaa over the seven days inspires you with a principle.

A lot of people come from the Kwanzaa celebration saying that they want to live by those principles.”

The performance by the Obediah Wright Balance Dance theater, symbolized the journey of Africans in the Americas, starting from villages in Africa, the journey during the middle passage, the evolution into negro spirituals, and then the Harlem Renaissance, which included tap dancing, and swing.

Mary’s Center in Harlem was recognized by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/ NCAL) for its achievements in the quality of care they provide.

St. Mary’s Center Inc. accomplished three of four national goals in areas including safely reducing unnecessary hospitalizations by at least 10%and maintaining a rate of 10% or less, safely reducing the off-label use of antipsychotics by 10% since 2017 and improving short or long stay functional improvement or worsening mobility by 15%.

I

t’s all yours.

You own it, got it, paid for it, you even have the receipt. That thing: you fought hard for it and nobody can take it away.

But – as in the new book “White Negroes” by Lauren Michele Jackson, folks can surely borrow it.

The meme on social media was almost perfect. Just one little tweak, and….

And that is an action based on “the root of the word” appropriation or, says Jackson, “to make something appropriate for another context.” That borrowing of word, phrase, action, or ideal from one culture to use in another culture

is as common today as it was centuries ago and because the world always seems to get smaller, “cultures will intersect and mingle and graft onto each other,” probably until the end of time.

So “why does any of this matter?”

Says Jackson, “in a word: power.” That which is appropriated is often used to exploit, and individuals are offered “next to nothing in return.” This goes double, she indicates, when there’s a “compulsion to own and regulate all things black.”

Appropriation can take years or it can happen with the speed of the internet and the appropriators generally assume control, use up everything good, then “walk away like it never hap-

pened.”

This can be seen with Black music, as Jackson says, by looking at the careers of Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus, both of whom she indicates appropriated facets of Black culture and discarded them when they no longer made headlines.

It happens in the beauty and modeling industries, as evidenced by the “blackified antics” of the Kardsahian women, who used Black faces to create controversial fashion, “without permission from anybody’s estate.”

Somehow, though, these “gaffes… never make it into the press.”

Reading “White Negroes” is a little like watching a bodybuilder hold up something that’s too weighty for him: for awhile, the effort of the lift is impressive, as the burden’s held aloft – but the longer it’s up there, the shakier it gets.

Indeed, author Lauren Michele Jackson has some thought-provoking, important things to say, but points made can seem weak and they aren’t always supported very well.

More confounding are the contradictions that arise when small-but-valid examples of possibly-imprudent

appropriation are offered, followed by or following admissions that cultural appropriation can happen naturally when cultures mix. It might have helped to separate culture from pop-culture because the water is muddy: a white woman blithely wearing expensive African tribe-inspired designer clothing is one thing; a white man singing a Black songwriter’s song is quite another.

If you are able to circle back to the roots of this book and concentrate on its highlights, you may find reason for introspection. It could take considerable effort, though, before you decide that “White Negroes” is a book to own.
