GRUPO NICHE was formed in Cali, Colombia in 1980 by songwriter, vocalist, arranger, and producer Jairo Varela, who began his music career at age eight with the group La Timba. Comprised of young musicians from the state of Chocó, Grupo Niche was conceived as new, alter native salsa with a more international style and flavor. Their first album, 1980’s Al Pasito, put Colombia on the map of the world of salsa. As Jairo Varela broke away from existing musical structures, he also took on Afro-centric issues in all their social and ethnic implications, singing to his homeland, Chocó -- its problems, its marginality, and its poverty. The group’s second album release, Quer er es Poder contained their first hit song “Buenaventura y Caney” which led to their first US tour in 1981. Their 1984 release, No Hay Quinto Malo, went gold and featured what has become their signa ture song, “Cali Pachanguero” which Billboard has called “one of the greatest Latin songs of all time.” The critically acclaimed Triunfo (also titled Se Pasó) was re leased the following year on the New York Latin Records label and went gold with pop ular hits like “Ana Milé” and “Del Puente Pa’alla”. After much success in Colombia, Grupo Niche soon earned in ternational fame and in 1986 became the first Colombian orchestra to perform at Mad ison Square Garden, playing at the World Salsa Festival. Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. is sup ported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council. The 2019-2020 Season is also made possible through the sponsorships by Goya Foods, The New York State Parks, Recreation and Histor ic Preservation Department, the New York State Council on the Arts, Con Edison, The Hyde and Watson Founda tion, Havana Café, and the Friends of Lehman Center.

HARLEM COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS RESTAURANT WEEK HARLEM RESTAURANT WEEK KICKS OFF WITH DOUBLE THE RESTAURANTS AND GREAT DEALS FROM TOP DINING SPOTS THROUGHOUT HARLEM

Harlem Restaurant Week, kicks off with double the restaurants, great deals from some of Harlem’s top fine dining spots and many ways to discover new and treasured eateries throughout west, central and east Harlem. The program combines promotional efforts from Harlem Park to Park, Frederick Douglass Blvd Alliance, Uptown Grand Central, Union Settlement, Bradhurst Merchants Association, New York Women’s Chamber of Commerce, Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement and Harlem Week/ Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, with support from Empire State Development’s Harlem Community Development Corporation (HCDC) and Division of Tourism/I LOVE NY. The Harlem Restaurant Week prix fixe dining promotion will take place throughout Harlem from March 1 to 15. A full list of participating restaurants and programming can be found at www. harlemrestaurantweek.com. “Our first all Harlem Restaurant week collaboration this past Fall was such a success for the businesses, that we easily saw an increase in participation and enthusiasm from participants. We’re excited to see the options and offerings

grow to show how rich in quality, variety and innovation our restaurants are as we continue to shine a spotlight on Harlem as a premier culinary destination in Manhattan,” said Nikoa Evans Hendricks, Executive Director of Harlem Park to Park. “This collaborative effort takes us one step closer by combining our efforts with the backing of the city and state,” she concluded.

The ten year old program started with less than 10 participants and focused only on central Harlem, where there was the highest concentration of notable restaurants. With the participation of almost 80 restaurants representing all of Harlem today, Harlem is cementing its place in the culinary landscape as a neighborhood where a waitress from South Carolina could become the owner of a legendary restaurant that would take care of generations of her family (Sylvia’s); where immigrant brothers could turn a

familial ginger juice recipe into a nationally distributed brand and accompanying café concept (Ginjan); where new ideas in food and flavors have taken root – from JJ Johnson’s innovative rice bowl concept at Fieldtrip to chef table spaces that are attracting rave reviews from top food critics (Belle Harlem, Reverence). “Along its many restaurant rows, one can find creations by celebrity chefs, next to legacy businesses, next to global flavors and more. We are trending in all the right ways and Harlem Restaurant Week is a very interesting assortment of dining experiences and a great snapshot of all the things happening now and leading us into the future of food and culture,” said Curtis Archer, President of Harlem, Community Development Corporation.

Diners will have an opportunity to try global cuisines next to traditional fare and discover new gems, like Chef

Pierre Thiem’s well received Teranga, the wonderful and newly reopened Chaiwali that was awarded a star by Pete Wells of the New York Times, Matthew Trebek’s Oso, recently awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand and East Harlem foodie darling, Mountainbird, among so many others. There are breakfast options from places like Harlem Shake and newly arrived Zaro’s, late kitchen dining options from favorites like the popular salon style bar and restaurant Ruby’s Vintage and 67 Orange Street, Harlem’s first craft cocktail bar. The week also has unique features including $10 and below meal deals and offerings from retailers like Harlem’s premier gift shop NiLu’s curated list of makers and products. As Harlem’s retail culture continues to grow, Harlem Restaurant Week supports local retail businesses by providing the platform as a means for retailers to present cross promotions

with participating restaurants. Cultural programming adds an additional nuance to the Harlem Restaurant Week experience.

“Harlem is a blend of neighborhoods that creates a beautiful mix of culture, history and cuisine, making it a truly unique part of Manhattan,” said LaChena Clark, Bradhurst Merchants Association.

“We are thrilled to have this unique neighborhood recognized on such a large scale,” said Carey King of Uptown Grand Central whose member restaurant Uptown Vegan will be among the restaurants offering tastings for $5.

“East Harlem continues to grow and develop it’s dining scene with newcomers like authentic Spanish tapas and wine at GAUDir and Joy Burger. Also the iconic Patsy’s Pizzaria is participating. We saw participation double this time around, making so many of our great eateries available for

all to try,” said Michele Cruz, Project Manager, Union Settlement.

“Harlem is one of the most iconic neighborhoods in the world. So it’s wonderful to be at a point where so many of our restaurants are gaining recognition and visibility. We can now provide a platform to present these important venues to the world, just as the culinary experience in other great cities such as New Orleans, Chicago and Atlanta are placed center stage during their restaurant weeks,” said Lloyd Williams, President of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce.

Various restaurants are planning entertainment showcases ranging from live jazz and music performances to dance and talks, in the tradition of Harlem’s gathering spots. A list of retail bonus offers and cultural events are listed and will be regularly updated on the HRW website atwww.harlemrestaurantweek.com.

Finn Partners, Energy Corporation and T-Mobile Honored by the New York Urban League with the 2020 Champions of Diversity Award F inn Partners, one of the fastest-growing marketing and communications agencies in the world, was named a 2020 Champion of Diversity by the New York Urban League (NYUL) at the 17 th annual Champions of Diversity Awards Breakfast. Finn Partners Founding Partner and CEO Peter Finn, who made a commitment to diversity one of the founding pillars of Finn Partners in 2011, accepted the award on behalf of the Agency. Other honorees incuded Leo P. Denault, Chairman and CEO of Energy Corporation and Holli Martinez, Vice Presiden, Diversity & Inclusion, T-Mobile. Roundabout Theatre Company (RTC) was also recognized by the New York Urban League (NYUL) for its commitment to fostering diversity, equity and inclusion in theatre at the 17 th annual Champions of Diversity Awards Breakfast. The New York Urban League, an organization committed to the education and employment progression of disadvantaged New Yorkers, is currently celebrating 100 years of service. NYUL chose the occasion to honor Roundabout for the institution’s ongoing efforts to address systemic inequities by harnessing the power of theatre to promote change through: compelling and thought-provoking plays that offer a consistent platform for diverse talents to be showcased across Roundabout’s five theatrical stages in New York City; professional development and training opportunities both onstage and behind-thescenes; and, robust education programs for New York City youth that expose them to the theatre and its inner workings.

Currently celebrating 100 years of service, the New York Urban League is an organization dedicated to the education and employment progression of disadvantaged New Yorkers. NYUL chose the occasion of its Centennial Year to honor Finn Partners for its commitment to DE&I across all levels – recruitment and retention; education, scholarship and mentorship; and, thought leadership activities that have made FINN an industry standard-bearer.

“Recognizing there is more to be done, we created the Actions Speak Louder program not only to increase diversity year-over-year, but also to foster an environment of inclusion, respect and collaboration across the firm’s global network of 700 employees,” said Peter Finn. “I am therefore honored – and humbled – for our firm to be receive this award. What started as a vision in 2011, has become a reality for us as we strive every day to uphold the highest standards of excellence. This could not be achieved without an unshakeable commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. I thank the New York Urban League for their commitment, and I commend them on 100 years of service in fighting injustice by creating opportunities for all New Yorkers.”

“The New York Urban League Champions of Diversity Awards were created to identify companies, institutions and respected leaders who have exemplary diversity practices in the areas of leadership, hiring and promotion, supplier diversity and philanthropy,” said Arva R. Rice, president and CEO of the New York Urban League. “Naming Finn Partners a Champion of Diversity was a unanimous decision for our Awards Review Committee. What FINN has done in just over eight years has helped drive the conversation around DE&I in the PR industry into action with tangible results. Finn Partners is truly the embodiment of what it means to be a champion of diversity in all that they do.”

“While Finn Partners has received PR industry awards for our efforts to advance DE&I, this is the first time that the Agency has been recognized by a leading civic organization. This marks a new level of awareness, and a wonderful affirmation that we are helping to make a difference,” added Helen Shelton, senior partner and director of Diversity & Inclusion at FINN. Marc H.
