As someone who has been very lucky in life, I often say my story would only have been possible in America — and that’s true. But I also know that because of the artificial barriers of discrimination, my story likely would have turned out very differently if I had been Black, and that more Black Americans of my generation would have ended up with far more wealth, had they been white.

Building Generational Wealth for Black Families is Critical. That’s why I launched The Greenwood Initiative in Tulsa last month. I visited the site of the Black Wall Street Massacre, where a white mob decimated the prosperous community of Greenwood. It is to the memory of the lost lives and promise of Greenwood that we’ve dedicated The Greenwood Initiative: a plan to address the systematic bias that has kept Black Americans from building wealth.

THE GREENWOOD PLAN WILL: • Create 1 million new Black homeowners • Double the number of new Black-owned businesses • Invest $70 billion in the country’s 100 most disadvantaged neighborhoods

Fixing the System for Black Families. When I was mayor of New York, I was proud to take on the systematic inequality that held back too many New Yorkers. We increased education funding, built 650 new schools and raised Black graduation rates to record highs. We led an ambitious effort to reduce poverty and managed the largest amount of affordable housing in the nation. And as President, I will work even more aggressively to combat inequality nationwide.

New York’s 17th Century African Burial Ground on Wall Street By: Erin Lewenauer

O

ne of the most important archaeological finds of our time is New York’s African Burial ground: the nation’s earliest and largest known African-American cemetery. For years it was hidden and violated, but holds the remains of New York City’s African and African-American pioneers and represents their significant history.

According to historical records, the first person of African descent to arrive in Manhattan was Jan (Juan) Rodrigues who was with the navigators, traders, pirates, and fisherman who boldly crossed the Atlantic as free men during the era of slavery. Rodrigues was a free black sailor from Santo Domingo (now the

Dominican Republic), who arrived in 1613 and set up a trading post with the native Lenape people on the island of Manhattan.

The first enslaved Africans arrived in what was then called New Amsterdam in 1625 as workers for the Dutch West India Company whose profits relied on slave labor for the fur trade and later slave trade.

Along with European merchants and sailors, Africans developed the early colony throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Africans were an important 20 percent of the city’s population in the 18th century.

Under Dutch rule, African slaves built New York City. They cleared land for farms and shore areas for docks as well as broadened

former Native American trails (Broad Way) to accommodate horse-drawn vehicles. The first community of free blacks emerged during the worst fighting of the Dutch and Indian War. In 1644, 11 enslaved men were freed and granted farmland in the dangerous frontier territory North of New Amsterdam.

This spanned the “Negro frontier” and “land of the blacks”: the Central region of Manhattan extending from Canal St. to 34th St. In 1653, upon Governor Peter Stuyvesant’s orders, the colony’s slaves helped to build the most famous fortification: The Wall (Wall St.). In 1658 the same laborers constructed the region’s first highway connecting New Amster-

dam with the island’s second largest village: the “road to New Haarlem”. In 1664 the English conquered the Dutch colony and New Amsterdam became New York. The English rescinded many rights for free blacks including the right to own land and, shut out of churchyards within the city, a separate burial ground for Africans developed. The ground eventually covered 5 city blocks and held 20,000 burials.

In 1975, the African Burial land was subdivided and sold for house lots. In the 20th Century it became New York’s government center. Its existence was forgotten until an archaeological excavation in 1991 in preparation for construction of a federal office building.

The African Burial Ground was designated a New York City Historic District and a National Landmark in 1993 and in 2003 some 10,000 participated in the “Rites of Ancestral Return” and re-interred the remains in a hand-carved wooden coffins from Ghana along with nearly 8,000 personal handwritten messages from the living to the African ancestors were also buried.

In 2006, the African Burial ground was proclaimed a national monument and in 2007 the African Burial ground National Monument became the first National Monument dedicated to Africans of early New York and Americans of African descent: a sacred space honoring their memory, work, and lives.

Longtime couples honored at Sweetheart Luncheon in the Bronx

orough President Ruben Diaz honored some of the Bronx’s finest couples on Valentine’s Day during the 11th annual Sweetheart Luncheon.

The event at Vil-

la Barone recognized couples who have been married for 50 years or more.

One married couple said the key to their 70year relationship was laughter and a tight-knit

family.

“We were blessed with a nice family, we do everything together, our family’s always with us… that’s what keeps our marriage going,” said Vincent Berreta.

With No Clear Front Runner, Bloomberg Spends $3.5 Million With the Black Press

ormer New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg has just made Black History. The presidential candidate who has been running his campaign through television ads and private meetings this week spent a historic amount of money with Black newspapers - $3.5 million.

“Of all the presidential candidates in the 2020 election, Mike Bloomberg just made the largest single political ad buy in the history of the NNPA,” said Dr. Ben Chavis, president/CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) in an interview with the Trice Edney News Wire. “The money has already been distributed and it’s running in our newspapers right now.”

Chavis says the money will be broken down among NNPA member newspapers in states that hold primaries on Super Tuesday and beyond. Super Tuesday states include Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, and Virginia.

“It’s a national ad buy and over 129 of our newspapers will benefit from that,” Chavis said. “What it shows is that the Bloomberg campaign is taking the Black vote seriously and it’s taking the Black Press seriously.”

NNPA, which turns 80 in March, has a membership of more than 200 Blackowned newspapers around the country. A longstanding grievance aired by the organization is that Democratic candidates and the Democratic National Convention has tend-

While Chavis was clear that that NNPA does not endorse candidates, dollars spent in Black newspapers and with Black media are often seen as the sign of a candidate who is serious about Black issues.

“NNPA is a 501-C6; so we don’t endorse,” said Chavis. “But our member newspapers, they have the freedom to endorse whatever candidate they feel will best serve Black America. But I’d just like to note for Black history sake since this is Black History Month, that Mike Bloomberg just made Black history.”

Biden has long been thought to be the front runner in the Black community, especially because of his faithful service as vice president to President Barack Obama. But it is clear that Bloomberg’s strategy is to meet him head on. While Biden has yet to lay out a Black agenda, Bloomberg, on Jan. 19, held a meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma to lay out his Black economic agenda.

Ron Busby, president/CEO of the U. S. Black Chambers Inc. confirmed that he attended that meeting at the invitation of the Bloomberg campaign.

“It did include an economic agenda for African-Americans. And it was very close to the U. S. Black Chambers’ economic agenda from increasing the number of Black-owned businesses to increasing

Stressing that the USBC is a non-profit and cannot endorse candidates, Busby says he has had no such meeting with Biden.

“Our plan is to meet with all of the candidates to discuss what they plan to do with Black folks.”

According to the Associated Press, at the Tulsa meeting, Bloomberg “spoke out against an American history of race-based economic inequality from slavery to segregation to redlining, and outlined a proposal aimed at increasing the number of blackowned homes and businesses. The plan includes a $70 billion investment in the nation’s most disadvantaged neighborhoods.”

“We can resolve our most pressing problems if we have the right leader to turn innovative ideas into reality,” Bowser said in a Jan 30th tweet. “Mike Bloomberg is a problem-solver with a proven track record of getting things done. He’s a mentor & friend & I’m proud to endorse him for President.”

While former President Barack Obama has not endorsed any candidate, Bloomberg has launched an ad campaign promoting his connection with Obama that starts with a news clip featuring his words from 2013. “At a time when Washington is divided in old ideological battles, he shows us what can be achieved when we bring people together to seek pragmatic solutions,” Obama says about Bloomberg in the 30-second political ad.

formed in Cali, Colombia in 1980 by songwriter, vocalist, arranger, and producer Jairo Varela, who began his music career at age eight with the group La Timba. Comprised of young musicians from the state of Chocó, Grupo Niche was conceived as new, alternative salsa with a more international style and flavor.

Their first album, 1980’s Al Pasito, put Colombia on the map of the world of salsa. As

Jairo Varela broke away from existing musical structures, he also took on Afro-centric issues in all their social and ethnic implications, singing to his homeland, Chocó -its problems, its marginality, and its poverty. The group’s second album release, Querer es Poder contained their first hit song “Buenaventura y Caney” which led to their first US tour in 1981. Their 1984 release, No Hay Quinto Malo, went gold and featured what has become their signature song, “Cali Pachanguero” which Billboard has called “one of the greatest Latin songs of all time.” The critically acclaimed Triunfo (also titled Se Pasó) was released the following year on the New York Latin Records label and went gold with popular hits like “Ana Milé” and

“Del Puente Pa’alla”. After much success in Colombia, Grupo Niche soon earned international fame and in 1986 became the first Colombian orchestra to perform at Madison Square Garden, playing at the World Salsa Festival.

The ten year old program started with less than 10 participants and focused only on central Harlem, where there was the highest concentration of notable restaurants. With the participation of almost 80 restaurants representing all of Harlem today, Harlem is cementing its place in the culinary landscape as a neighborhood where a waitress from South Carolina could become the owner of a legendary restaurant that would take care of generations of her family (Sylvia’s); where immigrant brothers could turn a

familial ginger juice recipe into a nationally distributed brand and accompanying café concept (Ginjan); where new ideas in food and flavors have taken root – from JJ Johnson’s innovative rice bowl concept at Fieldtrip to chef table spaces that are attracting rave reviews from top food critics (Belle Harlem, Reverence). “Along its many restaurant rows, one can find creations by celebrity chefs, next to legacy businesses, next to global flavors and more. We are trending in all the right ways and Harlem Restaurant Week is a very interesting assortment of dining experiences and a great snapshot of all the things happening now and leading us into the future of food and culture,” said Curtis Archer, President of Harlem, Community Development Corporation.

“East Harlem continues to grow and develop it’s dining scene with newcomers like authentic Spanish tapas and wine at GAUDir and Joy Burger.

Also the iconic Patsy’s Pizzaria is participating. We saw participation double this time around, making so many of our great eateries available for

all to try,” said Michele Cruz, Project Manager, Union Settlement.

“Harlem is one of the most iconic neighborhoods in the world. So it’s wonderful to be at a point where so many of our restaurants are gaining recognition and visibility. he Association for Community Affiliated Plans (ACAP) today recognized C. Virginia Fields, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Black Leadership Commission on Health (Black Health), formerly, National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, Inc. with its eighth annual Leadership in Advocacy Award. Ms. Fields was nominated by Amida Care of New York; she serves on Amida Care’s Board of Directors.

Ms. Fields has demonstrated a fierce commitment to improving the lives of New Yorkers— especially New Yorkers with low incomes. She began her service to the

city as a Social Service Administrator for the city’s Work Release Program before becoming the Director of Foster Care and Adoption at the Children’s Aid Society and a Consultant to the National Board of the YWCA. What you Should Know About COVID-19

O

n February 11, 2020 The World Health Organization (WHO) officially named a new type of Coronavirus COVID-19. This new Coronavirus strain was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan last December 2019 and has at this point infect-

ed close to 4,565 people and has caused over 100 deaths.

Although Chinese officials have enacted a quarantine and restricted air travel, COVID-19 has spread to Germany, Australia, Japan, Thailand, France, South Korea, Vietnam, Canada and the United States.

The five reported cases reported in America were developed from infected patients who had recently traveled to Wuhan China, where the first outbreak was reported. According to (WHO) coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause a range of illnesses from a common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2002 and 2003 an outbreak of a (SARS) coronavirus was detected in China and caused

over 700 deaths around the world, but most coronaviruses are not harmful.

This COVID-19 coronavirus strain has never been seen before, it affects the respiratory system and can lead to pneumonia, but it acts differently than other upper respiratory tract illnesses. It is accompanied by a fever, cough, and shortness of breath, but unlike other known upper respiratory tract illnesses it does not cause sneezing or a runny nose.

The early symptoms of COVID-19 include a dry cough and fever, some people have also experienced headaches, fatigue, diarrhea and after about 5 to 6 days shortness of breath can develop. While the symptoms of this new coronavirus can

appear the same as the flu or a bad cold, you should not panic if you are experiencing these symptoms.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest only screening for people who recently traveled to Wuhan or a person who has had prolonged contact with an infected person. You should, however, check with your doctor if your flu symptoms continue to get worse after a few days.

Unlike other viruses that have been studied for years, little is known about COVID-19 and how it works. Scientist have yet to develop a vaccine or medication to target it.

The CDC maintains that the threat of infection in the United States is low, but it

has been confirmed that human to human transmission is possible. Coronaviruses originate in animals and are usually not transmissible to humans, but occasionally this type of virus can mutate and pass from animals to humans and like in COVID-19 from human to human.

Many researchers believe that COVID-19 may have come from bats, which is ironic because according to the Chinese zodiac calendar 2020 is the year of the Rat. The people most vulnerable are the elderly and those with weak immune systems.

For now the best way to protect yourself from being infected by coronavirus is to wash your hands as much as possible; try not to put un-

washed hands on your face nose, mouth or in your eyes, especially after riding the subway; and avoid touching public objects. Any bacteria or virus can survive on your hands and enter your body through these vulnerable locations.

The CDC does not recommend wearing a facemask for people who are well, but if you are ill you should. Carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at lease 60% alcohol.

I also suggest not to allow the media hype to create fear which will weaken your immune system. You can also call 646-329-6727 to make an appointment to visit the Ki Wellness Center and learn how to reduce stress and strengthen your immune system naturally.

ecognition of the importance of Heart Valve Awareness Day is practically nonexistent for most Americans, unless you are someone like Candice Tarter, who, 12 years ago was afflicted with rheumatic fever that eventually led to four open heart surgeries.

Today, Ms. Tarter, a Black woman in Michigan whose ordeal with heart valve disease was first publicly disclosed in an article in Michigan Medicine News, is a living example of what can be done to survive the disease, once diagnosed and properly treated. Now a teacher at Detroit’s Marion Law Academy, having long ago set aside her

dream of an athletic career, she now aggressively encourages her fifth grade students to be responsible for their own actions, education and life—lessons she had to learn the hard way.

The lessons for Tarter’s young charges are now promoted as part of the annual Heart Valve Awareness Day that occurs during Black History Month, every February 22. It is conservatively estimated that as many as 11 million Americans have heart valve disease. “When we learned from a 2016 survey that too many Americans, especially African-Americans, had never heard of heart valve disease, we decided something had to be done to spread the word,” said Lloyd Williams, President of The

“Blair Underwood Presents Olympic Pride, American Prejudice” by Deborah Riley Draper and Travis Thrasher

ou’ve always held such promise.

People could see it in you, starting when you were small: you were going to go places, do good, make a mark on the world. They were proud to know you, happy to watch you land until – except – as in “Blair Underwood Presents Olympic Pride, American Prejudice” by Deborah Riley Draper and Travis Thrasher, the promise was broken but not by you.

Although Eddie Tolan was one heckuva runner, and though he’d won two gold medals, by 1933, he was done. The 1932 Olympics were over and so was

Tolan’s career because he knew that opportunities for African American athletes were few and “simply getting by may be his best path forward.”

Ralph Metcalfe hated to see that, but it wasn’t entirely bad news. He, too, was a medal winner in ‘32, and he had his sights set on running the 100-meter dash in Berlin in 1936. Competition was bad enough; seeing Tolan literally out of the running was a relief.

Metcalfe wasn’t the only African American athlete hoping for glory in Berlin.

Max Robinson knew he’d have to run against Jesse Owen and that would take some planning. No problem; Max had to set an example for his little brother,

Archie Williams wanted to run, but he wanted an education more; medals were good, but his future held a degree in engineering. Louise Stokes was a record-breaker, and she and Tidye Pickett were fast friends, in part because they were the only two Black women on the 1936 track team and sticking together helped them deal with the racism from inside and outside that team.

Altogether, there were eighteen African American athletes who boarded a luxury cruise ship and set sail for Berlin – but not quickly.

Not until officials decided that despite what Germany and its leader represented, America would compete

against the Nazis...

Believe it or not, it’s not the descriptions of the competitions that make “Olympic Pride, American Prejudice” so heart-pounding – although that’s pretty exciting stuff.

It’s not the fact that authors Deborah Riley Draper, Blair Underwood, and Travis Thrasher show the outrageous racism endured by elite athletes of the time, and were then forgotten – although you’ll have to pick your jaw up every few pages, so beware.

No, the thing inside this book that’ll make you catch your breath is something that swims just beneath the story, something so malevolent that the authors don’t, initially, even have to give

it a name to scare readers plenty. You’ll absolutely love the stories of these athletes, each of which starts in their childhoods and moves forward to their competitions and beyond. After knowing what they endured, and disappointments they had because of racism, you may feel like righting more wrongs that have already been remedied.

These things are true.

But it’s a maniacal dictator that gives this book its chill.

Step up and find this tale, then step back in time.
