Happy New Year 2021! I see 2021 as the year of “Hope.” We are hopeful the vaccine will be distributed throughout, the numbers will go down and we can begin our new normal without the fear of getting COVID. We are hopeful many small businesses will be able to hold on or bounce bank and get the assistance they need. We are hopeful the new administration will be successful at achieving their goals for us as far as improving economics, civil rights and relations with our international neighbors. We are hopeful the corporations will keep their commitment to hire more African-Americans in Executive positions. We are hopeful our children will be ok. We are hopeful those suffering from mental illness and other diseases will overcome. We are hopeful we can make “America Great.”

We are celebrating the last days of Kwanzaa and the beginning of the new year. 2021 is indeed a year we need to embrace the seven principles of Kwanzaa in order to remain inspired and united.

“Stay Home for the Holidays” – those are the words being echoed from the President-elect, the Governor, the mayor and the CDC. Resist traveling to be with your loved ones and yes be fearful you may take COVID to them or they may transfer COVID to you. Let us all be as safe as possible and look forward to all the hugging and kissing we can do hopefully next year during the holidays.

Remember to continue to shop with local businesses in the community. Many small businesses are trying to recover from the shut down during the Pandemic and they can use your support. Also remember when you shop with businesses in your community it is more likely that money will continue to circulate within your community. s we shake our heads wondering how we slipped into a muddy sinkhole of profound uncertainty that included misinformation, calculated schemes and scams, government goofing, and ego tripping in high places throughout 2020; many of us have had to find a source of positivity somewhere; a song, a prayer, or familiar phrase to help maintain peace of mind.

Whenever some unexpected dilemma would rise in my fam-

ily, my granny would say “trouble won’t last always” and always added to that with her hand raised to heaven, “thank God for Jesus.”

The first time I questioned those words, granny opened her King James translation of the Bible to Psalm

ceive bad news at the dawning of a new day.

It is mind boggling trying to understand the anguish and the sorrow of the millions who are coping with COVID-19; the loss of a loved one and the heart break of knowing there was nothing they could do. Perhaps my granny’s advice is the spoken hope that will strengthen a move toward new discoveries of feasible options.

Help is on the horizon, there is a light in the tunnel.

I do believe if we can get still enough to allow our inner self to embrace the idea that there could be good in the trauma of trouble, we might see it from another angle. Perhaps if the drama which is the force in trouble, could hold steady and slow its rush to action, reason might unfold.

Reason with wisdom as its foundation will offer the guidance that will reveal the way.

We cannot expect to survive thinking the way it was is the only way. We are entering a new year, not simply adding another digit to the count. We must let go of 2020 to

accept the possibilities of 2021. Those who are not willing to move forward will be left behind.

The climate is changing, the governing laws of the land will change, and the people have been forced to change. None of it is doomsday news, but rather an awakening of minds in science and medicine and in those chosen to render the most diverse and mandatory services for the good of all.

If it is true that trouble will not last always; rational thinking will proclaim; good must outweigh the bad; the strong will uplift the weak; the unsure shall seek discernment of the truth; the believers will pray for God to lift his mighty hand and heal the land. The struggle shall cease because the wicked ones shall decrease.

When the need for help is screaming loud and clear across the nation and in households closer than we ever imagined, we must pay attention and heed its call of desperation as quickly as possible. Do what you can, because it is the right

thing to do, not for fame or fortune. Share what surplus you have, make calls to inquire about the welfare of others; resolve an issue so that peace can begin with you.

It is my hope that cooperation and consideration with patience will prevail for President-Elect Joe Biden, Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris, cabinet, and staff, in their commitment to unravel the monumental mess they are inheriting and return the white house into the “right house.”

Furthermore, it is my prayer that we, the people, my people, will be ready to walk into a newness of life with good health and newfound wealth in 2021.

Happy New Year Beloved stay steady.

New Year’s Resolutions the Biden Administration Can Make Right Now

don’t know about all of you, but it feels to me like Christmas came early this year.

Electing a new president and vice president was a gift that 81 million Americans gave to ourselves and to one another.

Every court rejection of Trump’s bogus stolen election claims was one more stocking stuffer.

Now the only thing left on my Christmas wish list is a victory in Georgia’s Senate races and an end to Mitch McConnell’s power-abusing, progress-obstructing reign as Senate Majority Leader.

Actually, that’s not quite true.

I also want a Biden-Harris administration whose vision and boldness are worthy of the hard work and sacrifices that so many people made to put them in office.

The Democratic Party is a diverse coalition, and we shouldn’t expect everyone to agree on the best way to approach every issue.

It’s natural that we’ll have disagreements and debates.

But we can unite enthusiastically behind a broad set of values that we want our leaders to advance: equality, fairness, opportunity and justice for all. And we can agree on the need to move quickly to reverse many of the Trump administration executive orders and initiatives that undermined those values.

That’s why leaders from across the progressive movement are thrilled to look forward to the

day very soon when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sworn in—and to the next day, when they will be in position to start the work they’re preparing for now.

We are prepared to support them and fight alongside them, and when necessary to push them toward boldness in advancing policies that reflect our highest ideals and the urgent needs of millions of Americans.

Here are some resolutions that leaders of the Biden administration should make right now to make 2021 a much happier new year than the one we have left behind: 1. Make it a priority to start fixing the federal courts by nominating fair-minded judges and justices who are committed to protecting civil and human rights.

2. Restore integrity to the 2020 census by reversing illegal efforts by the Trump administration to restrict who gets counted – and who counts when it comes to representation in Congress.

3. Revive the Department of Justice as the nation’s primary protector of voting rights and civil rights and move aggressively against state and local efforts to restrict voting rights.

4. Do everything in our power to reunite the children and families separated by the immoral actions of the Trump administration.

5. Empower the Civil Rights Division at DOJ to investigate abuses by state and local law enforcement, use consent decrees to get commitments for reform, and ensure accountability and more just policing through steady oversight.

6. Give stability to millions of immigrant families by fully resuming the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, reversing Trump’s Muslim ban orders and policies, reopening the door to settling refugees, and eliminating the public charge rule that discriminates against poor people.

7. Recognize that religious liberty is meant to be a shield to protect everyone’s ability to exercise their religion, not a sword to allow religious claims to justify discrimination or other harms to others.

8. Reverse a Trump executive order that prevented federal agencies, contractors, and grantees from discussing the impact of racism in the workplace or embracing policies to advance diversity and equal opportunity.

9. Issue guidance establishing a necessary use of force standard

that allows police use of force only as a last resort.

10. Direct DOJ to explore legal options for limiting or ending the qualified immunity doctrine that insulates police officials from liability for serious misconduct.

Of course, there is much more work ahead for the Biden administration and for those of us who want it to succeed, particularly around COVID-19 recovery and access to health care. But these steps will get us off to a good start.

What a joy it is in this holiday season to know that so many policies grounded in bigotry and cruelty will soon be reversed.

What a blessing it will be not to be on the defensive at every moment—and to use our collective expertise, creativity, and heart to imagine, design, debate, perfect, and implement policies that will bring more fairness, more justice, and more opportunity to all the people in these United States.

The Cathedral of St. John the Divine online New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace

T

he Cathedral of St. John the Divine will hold an online New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace on Thursday, December 31 at 7 p.m. at stjohndivine. org and Facebook. com/StJohnDivineNYC. A holiday tradition for almost 40 years, the Concert for Peace was founded by Leonard Bernstein as a tribute to the people of New York City.

2020 has tested the

mettle of New Yorkers and Americans from coast to coast, and in homage to Bernstein’s original concept, the Cathedral will use this year’s online performance as a way to safely pay tribute to the bravery, selflessness, and ongoing resilience of the city.

The Right Reverend Clifton Daniel III, Dean of the Cathedral, will preside over the 40-minute program. Esteemed broadcast journalist Harry Smith, a long-

time friend of the Cathedral and master of ceremonies at many previous Concerts for Peace, will present a keynote talk and reflection.

Kent Tritle, Director of Cathedral Music, and David Briggs, Organist in Residence, alongside the renowned Cathedral Choir and so-

loists Arthur Fiacco and Jamet Pittman, will present musical highlights by Leonard Bernstein, J.S. Bach and Harry Dixon Loes.

Ending the evening on a high note, the Cathedral Choir will perform the beloved spiritual “This Little Light of Mine,” and all viewers are encouraged to light their own candles at home to join in the festivities, lending their own bright flame to illuminate the coming year.

The Universal Hip Hop Museum – The Official Record of Hip Hop

n the 1970s, America was in turmoil.

The economy was in a freefall. The nation was grappling with the Vietnam war. Marginalized Americans were still protesting in the streets for change. Anguish was felt throughout the country, but most profoundly in the nation’s inner cities. And this collective pain incubated an art form in the heart of the Bronx, New York, that would ultimately have a profound effect and influence upon the entire world. The birth of Hip Hop is a “Made in New York” story.

The story is delivered from the Bronx’s core creativity. It’s an epic tale, rich in history and cultural heritage that is rightfully told in

the place that first gave it life – Welcome to the Universal Hip Hop Museum.

Humble – Yet Explosive Beginning In the late 1970s, an endof-the-school-year party delivered Hip Hop, a new musical genre that would travel from borough to borough, city to city, and eventually around the world. The Black and Latinx teens who spearheaded the revolution of Hip Hop launched a musical paradigm shift, one which, by far, has had the most significant influence on popular culture since the U.K. invasion of the Beatles in 1964.

Those teenage kids who ignited New York City’s most significant cultural export came from various Bronx neighborhoods and

were viewed by their peers as relatable superheroes. In the communities in which they lived. They were the coolest of the cool.

You have seen their names on party flyers, watched them showcase their talent on the big screen, and have heard their songs on the radio. Their unique personas and mastery of

this new art form fueled Hip Hop’s explosive rise. I was one of those teenagers. I witnessed the culture’s birth and have participated in its global growth as a promoter and music label executive and am now leading the next phase of Hip Hop’s historical development as Executive Director of the Universal Hip Hop Museum.

Although most concentrated in Manhattan, New York City has many great cultural institutions, with very few located in the outer boroughs. The Universal Hip Hop Museum will be the first smart Museum constructed amidst a worldwide pandemic and the first cultural institution of its kind on the globe honoring the totality of Hip Hop. However, even though the doors are not officially open – we hold true to the saying – “Hip Hop Don’t Stop” – because, during the past year, the Museum has focused on supporting the needs of the greater global and local community by raising money to help New York City’s frontline healthcare workers and participating in the United Nations World Day of Peace.

We have also produced a successful preview of the future Museum in partnership with The Related Compa-

nies at the Bronx Terminal Market, titled the [R]Evolution of Hip-Hop, which has drawn more than 10,000 visitors from every corner of the world.

As a permanent home to accurately document, archive, and celebrate the cultural phenomenal; milestones, the Universal Hip Hop Museum will share and document the stories about the people, places, and events that spawned a uniquely American art form that celebrates the musical and creative contributions of the culture.

The Museum will give permanence to the stories bred in the Bronx and beyond and serve as a new international cultural hub welcoming local residents and one million-plus tourists to the Bronx from across the U.S. and overseas when the Museum opens to the general public in 2023.

L&M Development Partners has recently signed a landmark deal with Laborers’ Local 79. The agreement represents a significant step forward, ensuring that Bronxites will be among those hired to build the future home of Hip Hop history, which also distinctly sets the Museum apart from other cultural institutions.

The power and influence

of Hip Hop are most formidable. It’s an educational instrument used in classrooms, it’s the backdrop for movie scores, we hear the beats on tv commercials, and Hip-Hop is used as a tool to preserve ancient languages in Peru and Uganda..

The Universal Hip Hop Museum is best positioned to deliver on the race, social justice, and economic inequality issues amplified in 2020. For example, the Museum’s leadership is genuinely racially and ethnically diverse, representative of the NYC community.

The importance of Hip Hop’s influence and ability to empower and serve as a source of unity in a divided nation is more important now than ever before. And to encourage change, the Universal Hip Hop Museum will be a leader and active participant in facilitating gains for employees through opportunities in positions of power. Thus, creating an equal playing field for employees of color and investing in the community.

Hip Hop gives voice to the disenfranchised and is the cultural unifier connecting people of all races, ethnicities, and social status through music, poetry, dance, and art. – And in 2023, when the Universal Hip Hop Museum doors swing open, it will be a brick-and-mortar amplification of what the world needed in the 1970s and what the world needs now. The Universal Hip Hop Museum stands ready to usher the next 50 years of Hip Hop’s global prominence in the borough where it all began.

Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, Developed the Scientific Approach to the Coronavirus Vaccine

B.S. in Biological Sciences, with a secondary major in Sociology, in 2008 from the University of Maryland – Baltimore County, where she was a Meyerhoff Scholar and an NIH undergraduate scholar.

She then enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she obtained her Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology in 2014.

A viral immunologist by training, Dr. Corbett is known for using her expertise to propel novel vaccine development for pandemic preparedness.

Appointed to the VRC in 2014, her work focuses on

developing novel coronavirus vaccines.

Dr. Corbett has 15 years of expertise studying dengue virus, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus, and coronaviruses.

Along with her research activities, Dr. Corbett is an active member of the NIH Fellows Committee and an avid advocator of STEM education

and vaccine awareness in the community.

r. Anthony Fauci, the leading infectious disease doctor and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, addressed the African American community’s fears of accepting the new coronavirus vaccine.

“To my African American brothers and sisters … this vaccine that you’re gonna be taking was developed by an African American woman.

And that is just a fact,” Dr. Fauci proclaimed during a recent National Urban League event.

Dr. Fauci noted that Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, a Black woman, has been at the forefront of the vaccine process.

He added that it is vital to recognize the U.S.’s history of racism that’s led to great mistrust from the Black community.

Dr. Fauci exclaimed that the vaccine is safe.

“The very vaccine that’s one of the two that has absolutely exquisite levels – 94 to 95 percent efficacy against clinical disease and almost 100 percent efficacy against serious disease that are shown to be clearly safe – that vaccine was actually developed in my institute’s vaccine research center by a team of scientists led by Dr. Barney Graham and his close colleague, Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, or Kizzy Corbett,” Dr. Fauci stated.

Dr. Corbett, 34, is an accomplished research fellow and the scientific lead for the Coronavirus Vaccines & Immunopathogenesis Team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Vaccine Research Center (VRC).

According to her biography, Dr. Corbett received a

y family celebrated Kwanzaa in December 2019 in Savannah Ga. About 40 members of my family came together and we all wore outfits made from African Fabric.

in reciting the names of loved ones who have passed on. My uncle Al is the first person to introduce me to Kwanzaa celebrations in the 1980’s. I went to my first celebration in a community center in Savannah, Ga. After that I have celebrated Kwanzaa many times with my family in Savannah, we have also celebrated in Miami, Florida. I have planned and celebrated Kwanzaa in San Francisco, California with my sister-in-law’s family and friends I knew in San Francisco.

In New York I have covered the Kwanzaa Celebrations that were presented by the Ferrer Family at the

part of the celebration, usually at Sheridan Hotel. The most memorable Kwanzaa Ball I remembered that was created

by Jose Ferrer was the one held at the United Nations. It was a fabulous black-tie event where there were many African diplomats in attendance.

Kwanzaa celebrations in the past several years were organized by Voza Ribers and the New Heritage Foundation and held at the Museum of Natural History. This year of course all our 2020 Kwanzaa celebrations are virtual and we will have so much to celebrate as hopefully we can get

Kwanzaa was created by Karenga out of the turbulent times of the 1960’s in Los Angeles, following the 1965 Watts riots, when a young

Kwanzaa is about coming together. We can only do that virtually this year. However, hopefully next year we will be able to get together again and celebrate Kwanzaa 2021.

wanzaa began in 1966 in the United States by activist and educator, Dr. Maulana Karenga, to empower our people to rediscover their African heritage. It is not tied to any religious denomination.

The African American and Pan African holiday is anchored by seven principles known as the nguzo saba which aims to inspire Black people to be united, self-determined, accountable for their communities, financially invested

in Black-owned businesses, purposeful with their lives, creative and full of faith.

It is celebrated from December 26 to New Year’s Day with candles lit every evening in a sequence that corresponds with a discussion of the principle of the day.

The language used is Kiswahili, the common tongue of the Great Lakes region of East Africa, and one of the most widely spoken languages in Africa.

The celebration culminates on the seventh evening with a prayer and reciting together

7 times out loud, HARAMBEE (Swahili word meaning “Let’s all pull together.”)

Then, the feasting begins.

Social Media and Kids: What Parents Can Do to Ensure Safe Use (Statepoint)

he negative effects of social media have been much discussed as of late, thanks to the recently released documentary on Netflix, “The Social Dilemma.”

The documentary argues that while platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have at times been used to facilitate social movements and meaningful change, they can also make people more anxious, polarized, and inclined to believe misinformation.

What’s more, according to the documentary, these apps are structured to make their users obsessed with them.

As many parents know, children can be susceptible to the most common pitfalls of social media, but there are some key steps that they can take to help ensure that children’s usage remains balanced, healthy and safe:

• Sorting fact from fiction: Information about the world is often delivered via social media tools. Unfortunately, much of that content is actually misinformation. Parents can help stem the tide of “fake news” by teaching kids how to sort

fact from fiction and pointing them in the direction of trusted sources of information.

• Privacy measures: An enormous amount of data is gathered by social media companies. Parents should teach kids to be wary of sharing private information and opinions online. They can also add privacy settings to children’s profiles to ensure they are connected only to their friends and family.

• Social media and feelings: Social media usage can be an emotional roller coaster. Parents should consider having a conversation with children about the way social media makes them feel. As part

of this discussion, parents can remind kids that while “likes” and nice comments may make them feel good, it’s important not to rely too heavily on social media for emotional validation or real connection with friends.

Unfortunately, cyberbullies and online “trolls” are active social media users, too, making social media apps a sometimes unfriendly place.

• Monitoring usage: New tools are helping parents seamlessly monitor social media usage and protect kids from unsafe content. In fact, over 1.2 million families use the screen time management solution, OurPact. The app, which allows parents to block or

The Healing Frequency of 2021

U

nconditional love is the highest healing energy that we possess; most people have no idea how to use it but do so unwittingly. We all are made of energy; our emotions and the way we think will determine the level of our internal and external energies.

Positive thinking and emotions will increase the frequencies of our internal and external energy and keep us

healthy. Negative thinking and emotions will lower our body’s internal and external frequency making us sick.

In South Korea, I studied ancient Taoist energy healing techniques. There, I learned an acupressure procedure called “Chun Soo” (Heavenly Hands). This technique was also called “Mother’s Hands” because it harnesses the power of the unconditional love that comes from a mother’s touch. We all have that power if we can clear our minds of conditional thoughts when attempting to bring comfort to a loved one. It takes a greater degree of training to do the same for a stranger.

Matter has been known to be composed of vibrating energy for thousands of

years and quantum physics has proven that your health is dependent on the positive flow of energy through your body. Tools have been developed to provide a similar type of energy as many of the ancient energy balancing methods. Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Trophy is a fine example of the future of energy healing.

We will soon use a PEMF treatment mat in our Ki Energy Center to combine energy healing from the past with energy healing of the future. Like all energy healing methods from the past or present, there must be a balance of the mind, body, and spirit for effectiveness. One must learn to have unconditional love for the self to truly heal from any external healing method.

As we move into a new year and a new age, energy healing will become an important tool for wellness.
