Quarantine And Chill: Things to Do During the Covid-19 Crisis

ovid-19, Coronavirus or “Rona” as some are calling it has changed the way society typically functions. Some cities have imposed mandatory quarantines while others are encouraging self-control and self-quarantining. Many are complying with official requests for social distancing and eliminating contact with those outside of the household.

Folks are trying to manage how to teach their children at home and fulfill employment obligations while not losing their minds during this new normal marked by disappointments like canceled proms and graduations, rogue relatives refusing to follow the rules and constant news coverage of those who are sick and have passed away.

Despite these challenges there is a silver lining. Just when you were lamenting over failing to follow through on giving up social media for Lent, lots of people are com-

ing together on social media to offer wonderful activities for those at home. Check out a few below: Free Celebrity Performances on Instagram: Celebrities are offering outstanding free programming.

John Legend was joined by model and partner Chrissy Teigen for a CONVID-19 benefit concert from his living room that played on Instagram. If you didn’t catch John Legend, musical acts as diverse as Luke Bryan, JoJo, Miley Cyrus, D-Nice and Common are offering online concerts via Instagram. All you need is an Instagram account to watch and you’re good to go.

Fresh Direct Partners with All Five New York City Borough Presidents to Roll Out “Operation 5-Borough Food Drive”

reshDirect, in partnership with all five of New York City’s Borough Presidents, Ruben Diaz Jr. from the Bronx, Gale Brewer from Manhattan, Eric Adams from Brooklyn, James Oddo from Staten Island and Sharon Lee from Queens, today announced the launch of “Operation 5-Borough Food Drive,” a citywide food initiative to assist New York families in need. Beginning today, the program will consist of weekly (Monday through Friday) deliveries of thousands of grocery boxes.

“As a food company during these trying times, we consider it our duty to do everything in our power to help those who don’t have access to fresh, healthy meals every day,” said David McInerney, CEO,

FreshDirect. “Our incredible team of food preparation and delivery personnel has stepped up in an extraordinary way, taking on this crucial mission to support our community and our city.”

“I want to thank FreshDirect for being a lifeline to so many in this critical moment,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “As the world comes together to fight the spread of COVID-19, FreshDirect is really stepping up to the plate, supporting our trusted partners in providing vital services to our most vulnerable communities in their time of most need.”

The packages will arrive by FreshDirect vehicles to locations designated by each of the Borough Presidents and their offices. There will be two drop

off locations: one location will receive deliveries Monday and Tuesday, the second, Wednesday-Friday. Each box is being provided free of charge by FreshDirect as well as contributions from partners and vendors.

Boar’s Head Brand is donating product for over 12,000 family grocery boxes.

Additionally, Nestlé Waters is also joining the initiative and is donating 80,000 gallons of Poland Spring® Brand 100% Natural Spring Water.

All community outreach will be managed by the offices of the respective Borough President or by the partnering organizations in consultation with FreshDirect Public Affairs. Most of the items in the box are shelf stable and will provide some relief to families

who lack immediate access to food.

The PitCCh In Foundation, founded by Amber and CC Sabathia, is also a partner and will be distributing boxes to the local Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx. “The closure of schools and Boys & Girls Clubs in the Bronx, which so many rely on for their daily meals, has greatly impacted our community,” said Amber and CC Sabathia.

“By joining forces with Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and FreshDirect, we hope to ease the worry of food insecurity for local families and bring essential nutrition to those in need.”

For many homeowners this health crisis will eventually lead to a financial crisis that will have a devastating impact. Most lenders will require you to have at least 3 months of reserve payments.

But the savings will run out quickly. Here are some preventive financial actions to take now:

Eliminate all unnecessary expenses.

Revise your monthly household budget and focus only on the essentials. Food and shelter. Most people are being self-quarantine, so being inside your home may help cut outside cost i.e. transportation, lunch etc. Find the community service resources that will provide you with assistance.

Contact your lender

immediately if you are having difficulty making your mortgage payment. Many lenders are setting up special forebearance programs to assist homeowners who have experienced a loss of income due to this crisis. They may offer you an extension in making your mortgage payment or waive the late fees. But you will have to contact them to make the necessary arrangements.

But don’t stop there.

Contact each creditor and request a reduction in your monthly payments. You must be pro-active in reaching out to them.

If you are a small business owner, there are now some grant programs available to assist you in meeting monthly obligations. However, the funding is limited.

You must apply quickly and have a demonstrated need of assistance.

“Harlem has to talk to Harlem” is a statement made by Lloyd William President of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce during one of the many conference calls with over 40 upper Manhattan business, education, political, religious, public sector, cultural and civic leaders during the current public health crisis. New York State is the nation’s epicenter for reported COVID-19 infected cases.

Manhattan is considered the most influential borough in New City.

Many people travel from other boroughs to work in Manhattan. COVID-19 infected cases in Manhattan are currently not as high as Brooklyn or Queens but this could change.

Harlem is in the heart of

Manhattan but has a population larger than many cities in the United States.

The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce is the oldest continual business organization in Upper Manhattan. Chartered in 1896 as the Harlem Board of Commerce.

The organization’s name changed to The Uptown Chamber of Commerce in 1921, many believe it was to distinguish themselves from the growing Harlem Renaissance movement.

In 1993 the name changed to the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce as a result of the growing second Harlem Renaissance movement, the chamber adopted the motto of “The Business of Business is People."

or the first time in its 86year history, the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night auditions will be conducted exclusively through online submissions, as the nonprofit fills the coveted slots for the summer and fall 2020-21 season. The series, which has run consecutively through some of America’s most challenging times, will switch to an online only format as the country is in the midst of social distancing and all of New York’s and the nation’s cultural institutions closed their doors to protect the safety of staff, performers, and audience members. Starting today, contestants who can sing, dance, rap, play an instrument, and perform stand-up or spoken word can submit a pre-recorded audition up to five-minutes in length in the hopes of being selected to perform on the world-famous Apollo stage later this year and compete for

the Grand Prize of $20,000.

n the past three years, Dr. Marcella Maxwell, leader of the Abyssinian Baptist Church’s GOLDEN LIFE MINISTRY, has devoted an exceptional amount of time giving thought and support to programs, professional panels, seminars and workshops to assist the senior population in the primary purpose to live life like it is golden.

Now more than ever, it is important for seniors to grasp a strong hold on the wisdom they already possess to ride out the pandemic health crisis that is upon us. It had been broadly predicted and proclaimed by the entire medical profes-

sion that the senior population is the most vulnerable to the Coronavirus, better known as Covid-19.

It is of the utmost importance that seniors remain stalwart in protecting their mind, body and spirit throughout these troubling days.

Do not allow panic to overwhelm your present circumstance. Fear can create the kind of stress that will bring down the immune system and that is a medically proven fact. Concentrate on the positive. We cannot get depressed when there is so much to be thankful for.

We have a host of memories of how we got over

Congressional Black Caucus Focuses on Economic Recovery of African Americans in COVID-19 Crisis

he coronavirus health crisis that hit America in the middle of March has compelled Governors to shut down states, requested citizens to stay in their homes and moved Congress to pass an unprecedented stimulus of over two trillion dollars.

As the COVID-19 crisis hit its peak, the Congressional Black Caucus began to fight to “support the needs 12

of Black families, seniors, workers, businesses, and communities. On March 20, the CBC submitted an extensive 11-page proposal to House and Senate leadership with recommendations to support the recovery of Black America.”

The first draft of the COVID-19 Senate stimulus bill focused money to bailout large corporations and the top one percent. But after days of nego-

tiation that included President Trump big footing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the legislation was changed to focus more on the needs of main street Americans.

Those priorities included a higher direct payment to individuals from $600 to $1200.

Another change was an additional $500 child tax credit per child and a moratorium on foreclosures and evictions.

bers also added $447 million for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Several other provisions asked by members of the Congressional Black Caucus were an expansion of unemployment benefits to $600 per week in addition to the base max eligible for unemployment insurance, $15.5 billion in additional funding for SNAP, a temporary moratorium of 6 months for federal student loans and

funding the Minority Business Development Agency $10 million to make grants to minority-owned businesses.

There is also a provision adding $1 billion for the Community Services Block Grant and $750 million for Head Start and $4 billion in homeless assistance grants.

The U.S. House passed a $2 Trillion Senate bill. Other stimulus legislation is expected in the future but Congress is also

expected to take much of April off because of days added to the Easter recess in the wake of the COVID crisis.

• Prepare for potential changes in care and support. As public health containment strategies for COVID-19 escalate, families need to anticipate that less help may be available.

It’s important for families to anticipate these changes and make plans for filling gaps in caregiving.

• Be calm and create

a nurturing environment.

The current COVID-19 pandemic is creating added anxiety for everyone. Do your best to remain calm, particularly in your interactions with family members living with dementia. These individuals often take their cues from the people around them. Creating a calm environment will help them feel safe and protected.

• Play gatekeeper with outside caregivers and guests. Carefully monitor who is coming into the home to ensure all who enter are healthy. Be proactive in asking outside caregivers and guests about their current health status and make sure they are not experiencing any early or recent symptoms of illness.

• Ask residential care facilities about communication

policies. To protect the health of residents, many facilities are restricting access to outside visitors. Ask the facility about alternative communication methods during the crisis, including phone calls, video chats or emails. If your family member is unable to engage in calls or video chats, ask the facility how you can connect with staff to get health updates.

How and Why to Keep Kids on a Schedule During School Closures (Statepoint)

chool closures have forced families nationwide to readjust to the current reality. However, a sense of structure is important for children’s developmental growth. To create a routine for your kids that sticks, consider the following tips: • Just because there is no formal school day doesn’t mean kids should sleep in or stay up late at night. Keep the same bedtimes, wake-up routines and mealtimes you always maintained during a regular school week. Doing so will bookend the mornings and evenings with a sense of normalcy.

• Mimic a school day to the best of your ability. Use the distance-learning tools

Now More Than Ever

H

arlem Holistic Wellness Week (H2W) has always focused on holistic health care prevention options. The central theme for H2W2020 has now become “Now More Than Ever” and I believe that this theme can be used for more then the H2W2020 focus. It

is the foundation of how we all must face this current public health care crisis.

It is important for families, communities, states and the nation to come together Now More Than Ever to address COVID-19. This country has been divided and polarized on the lines of politics, race, religion, gender, social economic status and social programming for some time, it is now a time for de-programming.

If you still have the same mindset as you had two months ago, your chance of survival as well as the people close to you, will be compromised; now more then ever we must change our way of thinking about ourselves and others. A public crisis will always bring out the light in people and the darkness in

Light will always overcome darkness, and I am proud to say this is the case in my community of Harlem and communities throughout the world are coming together to collectively help each other more than ever before, and prevention strategies are important now more than ever.

Wellness prevention strategies are not new, many of us were raised understanding some of the basics. I remember my mother telling me to “cover your mouth when you sneeze, wash your hands before you eat, get your hands off your face and eat all your vegetables before leaving the table.

Last week I talked about the need to decrease the acidity in your body to improve

O

nce upon a time....

Isn’t that how a good story always starts? Once upon a time, and there’s a prince and a princess, and usually a castle and always a happy ending. Except, sometimes, there’s not. Some stories need a little help to end well, and in “Parable of the Brown Girl” by Khristi Lauren Adams, the Bible is the place to find it.

Years ago, shortly after graduation from college, Adams worked at a residential treatment facility for teen girls with emotional difficulties. It didn’t take long for her to see that each of the girls were angry at

the world and she knew that they probably had good reason for that: everyone had let them down. When one girl finally confided in her, Adams knew she’d found “the call God placed on” her life: “to build relationships and work as an advocate for black girls who often find themselves on the margins.”

Today, she finds that the stories her clients tell her have parallels to Parables in the Bible.

Nine-year-old Deborah, for instance, was a sunny child whose “happy place” was school, mostly because her home life was no longer supportive. Adams didn’t quite know what to say

when the child asked why God made her “a warrior when I’m really just weak,” but the answer was in the Bible.

Teenage Leah was depressed, anxious, overwhelmed, all of which led to self-harm and an eating disorder. The victim of racism and bullying, Leah was heartened by a reminder that she was made in God’s image. Beautiful Lyric had also been bullied and she thought she was too insignificant for God to bother – until she figured out, as she says, that “God heard my voice.”

Black girls, as Adams points out, are accused of having “attitude.” They catch the “strong black woman” bit at a time when

they don’t want to be strong or stoic. They’re accused of being “fass” and flirtatious, flaunting the body and hating the hair God gave them.

What they all should know, says Adams, is that “God’s grace and Wisdom aren’t far from any of them.”

When you first page through “Parable of the Brown Girl,” you may be a bit confused. Is it a book for teens, parents, teachers, or carers?

The answer is: all four.

Teenage girls will get plenty of wisdom and guidance within these pages, as author Khristi Lauren Adams offers Bible-based succor and food for thought.

the situations her subjects have endured and what they taught her, which is surprisingly heart-opening. Readers will see how the lives of today’s girls is vastly different from that which their mothers lived, and Adams calming voice tones down any drama that may come from misunderstanding.

Her compassion toward Black girls is also catching, and her shared faith could be a great comfort in what might be turmoil for both teen and family.
