Next, someone came up with the clever idea to blast out on speakers Alicia Keys song “New York” – what a perfect ending. The “Good News,” amidst this terrible Pandemic, is that people are showing they care for one another, people are showing they can be obedient and respectful in wearing their masks and gloves, We have ti be united in this struggle.

I am no stranger to “social distancing” and isolation. In 2017 from February to June when I was being treated with chemo and had surgery for triple negative breast cancer, which compromised my immune system, I had to practice social distancing for fear of getting an infection from other people, pets and plants. God got me through that and I have faith he will bring me through this if it is his will.

As press I receive a lot of information and my goal is to share that information with you so you can be informed and be able to take advantage of any assistance being offered during these times.

COVID-10 Sensible Advice.

To Avoid Covid-19 What I have seen a lot of are recommendations for how to try to avoid getting coronavirus in the first place • good hand washing • personal hygiene • social distancing — but what I have NOT seen a lot of is advice for what happens if you actually get it, which many of us will.

So as your friendly neighborhood Nurse let me make some suggestions: *If you get Covid-19* You basically just want to prepare as though you know you’re going to get a nasty respiratory bug, like bronchitis or pneumonia. You just have the foresight to know it might come your way!

*Things you should actually buy ahead of time* (not sure what the obsession with toilet paper is?): • *Kleenex,* • *Paracetamol*, • whatever your generic, mucus thinning *cough medicine* of choice is (check the label and make sure you’re not doubling up on Paracetamol) • *Honey and lemon* can work just as well!

• *Vicks* vaporub for your chest is also a great suggestion.

• *a humidifier* would be a good thing to buy and use in your room when you go to bed overnight. (You can also just turn the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom breathing in the steam).

• *If you have a history of asthma* and you have a prescription inhaler, make sure the one you have isn’t expired and refill it/get a new one if necessary.

• *Meals* This is also a good time to meal prep: make a big batch of your favorite soup to freeze and have on hand.

• *Hydrate (drink!) hydrate, hydrate!* Stock up on whatever your favorite clear fluids are to drink – though tap water is fine you may appreciate some variety!

• *For symptom management* and a fever over 38°c, take Paracetamol rather than Ibuprofen.

• *Rest lots*. You should not be leaving your house! Even if you are feeling better you may still be infectious for fourteen days and

older people and those with existing health conditions should be avoided!

• *Wear gloves and a mask* to avoid contaminating others in your house • *Isolate* in your bedroom if not living alone, ask friends and family to leave supplies outside to avoid contact.

• *Sanitize* your bed linen and clothes frequently by washing and clean your bathroom with recommended sanitizers. *You DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL unless* you are having trouble breathing or your fever is very high (over 39°C) and unmanaged with meds.

meds. *If you are worried or in distress or feel your symptoms are getting worse* *Preexisting risks* If you have a pre-existing lung condition (COPD, emphysema, lung cancer) or are on immunosuppressants, now is a great time to talk to your Doctor or specialist about what they would like you to do if you get sick. *Children-* One major relief to you parents is that kids do VERY well with coronavirus— they usually bounce back in a few days (but they will still be infectious), Just use pediatric dosing . *Be calm and prepare rationally* and everything will be fine.

n the face of the coronavirus pandemic, The Bronx community – residents, small businesses, government officials and non-profits – came together as a broad coalition to build a plan to ensure that those who needed help most received assistance.

The Bronx Community Relief Effort was born in the South Bronx immediately after the coronavirus hit New York City. The Effort aims to raise $10 million to support effective, on-the-ground operations that are focused on meeting the most essential needs of The Bronx community. This includes filling gaps in public financing and broader grant programs. Donations collected are distributed in real-time within the community to those in critical need.

Cities with large black populations have now emerged as new hot spots for the spread of the virus.

They include Houston, New York, Detroit and New Orleans. Nearly 70 percent of the COVID-19 deaths in New Orleans have been African American.

“Any attempt to contain COVID-19 in the United States will have to address its potential spread in low-income communities of color, first and foremost to protect the lives of people in those communities, but also to slow the spread of the virus in the country as a whole,” Warren and

An April 3rd report in ProPublica analysis stated that “early data shows African Americans have contracted and died of coronavirus at an alarming rate.”

Milwaukee is tracking COVID-19 cases by race — one of few cities that does so.

In Michigan, where the state’s population is 14% black, African Americans made up 35% of cases and 40% of deaths as of Friday morning. Louisiana has not published case breakdowns by race either.

“COVID is just unmasking the deep disinvestment in our communities, the historical injustices and the impact of residential segregation,” said Dr. Camera Jones, who spent 13 years at the CDC. “This is the time to name racism as the cause of all of those things. The overrepresentation of people of color … is not just a happenstance … It’s because we’re not valued.”

ributes have poured in for Black Enterprise founder Earl G. Graves Sr., who died last week at the age of 85.

“At 9:22 p.m. this evening, April 6, my father and hero, Earl Graves Sr., the founder of Black Enterprise, passed away quietly after a long battle with Alzheimer’s,” Earl Graves Jr. wrote on Twitter. “I loved and admired this giant of a man and am blessed to be his namesake. Love you, dad.”

A tweet from Black Enterprise stated, “We will evermore celebrate his life and legacy, in this, our 50th Anniversary Year, and beyond.”

Born January 9, 1935, in New York, Graves learned hard work and perseverance from his parents, Earl Godwin and Winifred Sealy

Graves. After receiving a B.A. in economics from Morgan State University, he served two years in the Army, followed by a three-year stint as Senator Robert F. Kennedy’s administrative assistant, according to his profile on The HistoryMakers.

After Kennedy’s assassination, Graves entered the business arena, where he was to realize unprecedented success.

Since founding Black Enterprise Magazine in 1970, Earl Graves has been named one of the ten most outstanding minority businessmen in the country by the President of the United States and received the National Award of Excellence in recognition of his achievements in minority business enterprise. Black Enterprise Magazine is recognized as the definitive

resource for African American business professionals, entrepreneurs, and policymakers in the public and private sectors, The HistoryMakers noted.

“We are grateful for the legacy, life, and leadership of Earl Graves Sr, and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family,” The King Center tweeted, along with a photo of Graves escorting Coretta Scott King to the funeral of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy just two months after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.

“It is with a heavy heart that we acknowledge the passing of Earl Graves Sr., Founder & Publisher of Black Enterprise,” Tweeted the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce. “Mr. Graves was a friend of the U.S. Black Chambers and a true advocate for Black entrepreneurship. Our deepest condolences go out to his

family and loved ones.”

New York Attorney General Tish James called Graves “the ultimate champion of Black business and a fighter for racial and economic justice in our nation.”

“He helped African Americans make a name for themselves in the business world and build their very own American dream. May He Rest in Peace,” James stated.

The family didn’t immediately announce funeral plans.

IN MEMORIAM: Lean on Me: Singer-Songwriting Legend Bill Withers Dies at 81

T

hree-time Grammy Award winner Bill Withers, a singer-songwriter of music with lyrics and harmony carrying messages that stayed in the minds of many listening in an indelible way, has died at 81. Withers passed away in Los Angeles.

Withers’ family referenced a heart condition as the cause of his death which has not been linked to COVID-19.

His song “Lean on Me” is one of the most popular in modern popular music and was judged to be one of the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine along with “Ain’t No Sunshine.”

Withers soulful songs “Lean on Me,” “Lovely Day” and “Ain’t No Sunshine,” have

now become standards heard for five decades in feature films and in the background of endless TV episodes.

Withers most recently appeared in the documentary The Black Godfather on Netflix.

The film, directed by Reginald Hudlin, was a tribute to the life of influential music executive Clarence Avant and was released by Netflix last year.

Avant detailed his association with Withers.

“I kept listening to him. I kept listening to Harlem and I kept listening to “Grandma’s Hands” — and you say to yourself: You didn’t hear many records with people talking about their grandmothers, but everybody has one. His records to me made so much

common sense. It was like you were just talking to somebody.

You listen to “Lean on Me.” One of the songs he wrote that I still think is a great song talked about the Vietnam War,” influential music executive Clarence Avant explained.

“All those kinds of things just resonated with me and I said wow this guy has got it,” Avant said of Withers. At the time Avant owned Sussex Records. Avant signed Withers and had Stax Records associate Booker T. Jones produce Withers’ first album. Withers later signed with Columbia Records.

The partners also have commissioned an interactive mural by noted artist Paul Deo which will be displayed on

What You Should know About Hemp and CBD Oils

annabidiol, or CBD is a compound found in cannabis plants and has been used medicinally for centuries.

Some of the first records of the medical use of CBD oils can be traced back more than 4000 year to ancient Egypt (known then as

Kemet). Evidence of this and therapeutic reflexology treatments were found in illustrations on the walls of the Physician’s Tomb at Saqqara.

CBD is derived from the hemp cannabis plant which is sometimes confused with its cousin the marijuana cannabis plant. Marijuana is a cannabis plant that contains THC, which is known for creating a psychoactive response to the mind (also known as a high). Hemp has grown in the US for many years and can be used to make clothing, paper, skin and health care products.

The many manufacturing uses of hemp was a major reason all cannabis plants were criminalized by laws influenced

by wealth clothing and paper manufacturers.

Many were not aware of the therapeutic benefits of CBD oils until states started to legalize medical marijuana, which made CBD oils a hot business product.

States like New York who had legal medical marijuana laws still prevented the sale or marketing of CBD oils until December 20th, 2018 when the Agriculture Improvement Act was passed legalizing the use of CBD oils in all 50 states. Now anyone can benefit from the therapeutic qualities of CBD oils.

The cannabinoids found in CBD oils can bind to specific neurotransmitters in the body involved in

regulating pain and immune system response.

Studies have shown that CBD oils and Hemp products may help to reduce pain and inflammation.

Studies also indicate that CBD oils can help balance mood and lower anxiety by having a positive impact on the brain’s receptors and neurotransmitters that regulate mood.

verybody’s supposed to stay home now.

It’s probably not the “home” you’re thinking about though. The home you want to see involves running around a diamond, cheers in your ears, ahhh, you wanna hear that again. For now, though, you may have to make do with a home run like “Who Got Game? Baseball: Amazing But True Stories!” by Derrick Barnes, illustrated by JohnJohn Bajet.

Every day’s a great day for baseball, right? But this year, you may have to wait to watch your fa-

vorite players, so why not learn about the game in the meantime?

For starters, there was once a time when baseball was “for White men only,” and so Black players and women made their own leagues. Even so, baseball wouldn’t be baseball without guys like Andrew “Rube” Foster, who’s known as “the father of the Negro Leagues”; or Hammerin’ Hank Greenberg, who became the first Jewish Hall of Famer; or immigrants like Ozzie Virgil from the Dominican Republic, or Sadaharo Oh from Japan.

Through the years, there’ve been lots of changes to the game.

For one, the spitball was outlawed in 1934, but not before a player was killed by one. Women have been invited into the game, first by women’s leagues at various times in history, and later, by the first female baseball executive. African American players were denied a chance to play so they made their own leagues, too, and eventually broke the color barrier in the majors.

In this book, you’ll read about forgiveness for a fan. You’ll read about an influential doctor who saved careers, and players who never let a little disability stop them from the game. You’ll read about “a stinking mule” who

was a mascot, a guy who was hit by 287 pitches during his baseball career, and a player who had to

For a kid who lives and breathes baseball, this lock-down must be hard. But dreaming about getting on the ball field isn’t all they can do at this time. They can also read “Who Got Game? Baseball: Amazing But True Stories.”

The thing your child will love most is that this book isn’t filled with things he or she already knows. Author Derrick Barnes and illustrator JohnJohn Bajet dug out tales from the dugout, sure, but they also include stories of support staff and non-players who influenced the game. Young readers will learn about the game from its very inception, as well as modern stories of baseball, and there’s some science hidden in side-bars. Even just browsing the illustrations inside this book will invite young players in, and keep them in their (bleacher) seats.

Absolutely, a true baseball fan will love this book, especially if they’re Little Leaguers or kids ages 8 to 15. For them – and you – “Who Got Game? Baseball: Amazing but True Stories!” will be a big hit.
