Now we just wait paitiently. If you went out and voted early or on election day - you have done all you could do and now we wait for the results. I am hopeful the results will yield an America more united than ever and ready to make sure all citizens in this country feel they have equal opportunity to suceed. We hope there is a national plan so that we can all fight this Pandemic together, lower the numbers to the point where we can open up all across America, sooner than later.In spite of all our hopes and dreams we have today, now. Holiday lights are up on 125th Street and the plan is they will light up on November 18th. So let us plan to thank God for bringing us this far through this Pandemic this Thanksgiving and let us plan to celebrate with family and friends VIRTUALLY!.

Driven by a Tumultuous Four Years, a Record 98 Million Americans Vote in Early Voting

fter years of laws passed to make it harder to vote after the election of the first Black President of the United States, early voting has become a phenomenon. The record turnout is the result of high interest in the 2020 race and activists on the ground and political parties wielding their resources to register more voters.

Americans have cast a record-breaking 98 million people voting early for the 2020 elections. The numbers put the 2020 elections in position to be the highest ever for voter turnout. The total is close to twice as many early votes as cast in the 2016 election.

The COVID-19 pandemic appears not to be stifling turnout for an election driven primarily by the controversial and divisive personality of Donald Trump. Younger voters who represent the changing demographics in America are voting in record num-

Tips to Improve Indoor Air Quality and Breathe Better at Home (Statepoint)

ith more of life centered at home due to cool weather and social distancing, it’s time to ensure the space where your family spends the majority of its time is healthy and safe.

What many people don’t know is that concentrations of air pollutants can typically be up to five times higher inside one’s home than out, and sometimes far more, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Family and Friends Celebrated the Extraordinary Life of Stanley Crouch , at a Private Service at Minton’s Playhouse

A

small group of family and friends gathered Monday at the historic Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem to celebrate the life of Stanley Crouch, the 74-year old author, journalist, critic, playwright, poet and NEA Jazz Master who died in New York September 16 following a long illness.

One of the goals of jazz musicians is to have a signature sound – one note, and you know it’s them. By the time the Los Angeles-born, New York-based Crouch made his transition, one reading of his poetic and often pugnacious prose would tell you it was written by no one buthim.

In addition to his immortal words, his co-founding of Jazz at Lincoln Center was literally concrete proof of his signature send-off phrase, Vic-

Among the musicians who presented musical selections and remarks were Wynton Marsalis, trumpeter, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and President of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, which which Crouch headed for a decade; bassist and the celebration’s host, Christian McBride; pianist/vocalist Jon Batiste, saxophonist David Murray, vocalist Tammy McCann;and pianist Victor Gould with his trio consisting of bassist Tamir Shmerlingand drummer Anwar Marshall.

Robin Bell-Stevens, Director of Jazzmobile and Vice President of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation, opened the program welcoming family and friends that also included remembrances from Jackie Harris, Executive Director, the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation; Robert O’Meally, author and Columbia University Professor; Greg Thomas, CEO, Jazz Leadership Project; Art Thompson, Advisor, the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation; and Sheila Anderson, author and WBGO On-air Host. The Reverend Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, Pastor of The Abyssinian Baptist

Church in Harlem, presented the opening prayer and the eulogy. The celebration was produced by Bell-Stevens for the family.

Rev. Butts concluded the afternoon of memories with calling Crouch “a man who was true to himself … who did not ever hold his tongue … so forthright, so bold that your first reaction was to fight, but it should have been to sit down and listen … if I could risk saying this, I would say there’s a place in the Kingdom for Stanley.”

A former jazz critic and staff writer for The Village Voice and a columnist for the View New York Daily News, Crouch’s writings on jazz, race, politics and culture were collected in several books of essays from his Notes of a Hanging Judge to his Charlie Parker biography, Kansas City Lightning, and his sole novel, Don’t the Moon Look Lonesome. Depending on the reader, Crouch’s books were tablets of enlightenment, where the Black, Brown and Beige were in sync with the Red, White and Blue, or they were heat-seeking missiles aimed at fools he never suffered gladly.

Born on December 14, 1945 in Los Angeles, California, to James and Emma Bea (Ford) Crouch, Stanley Crouch was raised in a single-parent household. His

mother had roots in East Texas. As an often-sickly child with severe asthma, he immersed himself in books and old movies. Becoming interested in jazz and poetry, he taught himself to play the drums. In 1968, he was named a poet-in-residence at Pitzer, one of the Claremont Colleges, where he would also go on to teach, prior to teaching literature at Pomona College, without a degree. He also led Black Music Infinity, an avant-garde jazz group that included future jazz luminaries David Murray, Arthur Blythe, James Newton, and Mark Dresser. In 1975, Crouch moved to Manhattan to focus on writing, and soon became a busy freelancer, giving up performing as a musician when his writing career took off.

In addition to his wife, Stanley is survived by his daughter Gaia Scott-Crouch, his granddaughter Emma Flynn White and Nia’s daughter, Donyale Farrar.

his year, the country was suddenly faced with a shelter-in-place mandate as a way to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over time, the United States emerged as the global epicenter of this devastating disease that was sadly taking the lives of many people at an alarming rate. As schools, universities, and businesses closed, adults and children alike were immediately faced with the challenges of creating a new normal for their daily 14

A thoughtful tenyear-old girl in South Hadley, Massachusetts had an idea that would hopefully spread joy to a world that had suddenly become very different. Aaliyah Hall, created a bedtime reading series, Dreamland with Aaliyah, for children of all ages. Using her personal collection, she launches the series every night on Facebook Live at 6:30 pm EST. Her hand-picked books reflect the diverse fabric of American society, spotlight-

ing a variety of cultural expressions, national observances, and walks of life.

Aaliyah has honored Pride Month, Ramadan, Earth Day, Harvey Milk, Rosa Parks, and many other important topics on her show. But what started off as a tween’s response to the national public health crisis has emerged as a personal statement that is aligned with the “Black Lives Matter” movement one that many of us can relate to.

When asked why

she started this nightly series, Aaliyah excitedly explained, “The mission of the show is kid-curated bedtime stories designed to inspire hope. I wanted something for people to look forward to every day.”

Five Reasons We Must Increase Diversity in Medical Research

F

or better or worse, the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the devastating impact health inequities have on people of color; especially members of the Black and Hispanic/ Latino communities.

Mentions of medical studies are at an all-time high, given the focus on the search for a COVID-19 vaccine; but it’s important to understand that research has existed since the advent of modern-day medicine. It is through research that we learn if a treatment is safe and works as it is supposed to.

Participation in medical research is particularly important if you are from a racially and/or ethnically diverse background because these groups have been historically underrepresent-

ed. Here are five reasons why this matters and what you can do for yourself and others.

1. Shifts in Population.

According to U.S. Census data, Black/African Americans represent 13% and Hispanics/Latinos make up 18% of the U.S. population.

However, from a clinical research perspective, the U.S. Food and Drug Adminis-

tration (FDA) reports that Blacks only represent 5-7% and Hispanic/Latinos 1-6% of the volunteers in medical research. Caucasians account for 67% of the population, but 83% of research participants.

2. Treatments proven to work for everyone. Medical research, and the people who volunteer for it, are essential to the development

of ways to fight illnesses.

Research has shown that certain populations can be at higher risk for different diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. That’s why it’s important for studies to include diverse volunteers who represent the population most likely to be treated with the medicines or devices being studied.

3. Equal access to care.

Everyone deserves quality healthcare but, unfortunately, not everyone has equal access to it. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, members of the Black/African American community are 30% more likely to die from heart disease than Caucasians. Additionally, The Center for American Progress reports that one in five Hispanics/

One initiative working to improve inequities is the Boston Scientific Close the Gap program, which aims to help all patients understand their medical condition and different therapies available to help them live better lives. eterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, that is, persons who have served in the United States Armed Forces (and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable). It coincides with other holidays including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day which are celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germa-

ny went into effect. At the urging of major U.S. veteran organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

Veterans Day is distinct from Memorial Day, a U.S. public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who had died while in military service. Another military holiday that also occurs in May, Armed Forces Day, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military. Additionally, Women Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of U.S. states that specifically honors women who have served in the U.S. military.

Since Rutledge, a Navy veteran, joined the bank in 2009, Wells Fargo has increased its infrastructure to include recruitment,

engagement, development and retention of military talent within Wells Fargo by incorporating two teams who are solely dedicated to this work: the Military Talent Programs team and Military Strategic Sourcing team for a total of more than 20 roles within the organization that focus on cultivating an environment where military employees can succeed and grow with the company.

The bank updated their job descriptions to make them more military-friendly and initiated a new pro-

gram called “Boots to Banking” career boot camp for veteran jobs seekers and hiring event for several lines of business at Wells Fargo.

Rutledge enlisted in the Navy just before the country was called to serve in the Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) in the early 1990s. “[The desire to serve] was something that stayed with me,” Rutledge proclaimed, noting that she had earned a four-year college scholarship after graduating high school.

However, after one year, she sought to join.

The history of the military reveals that African Americans were not fully welcomed to serve along white brothers and sisters in arms. “Thankfully that changed quite a bit over time.

The branch though that I chose was the last to desegregate, the Navy.

I couldn’t help but wonder what implica-

tions might be associated with that history.

But, I jumped in anyway,” says Rutledge.

“It was as unsettling as I expected,” Rutledge remembered.

“It wasn’t a matter of race while living in the barracks. It was about helping one another to survive.”

“It was really interesting when I came to Wells Fargo because I had just been displaced from another position and I was focused on things that were lacking during my period of unemployment,” Rutledge stated..

Rutledge said she calendars time for recurring meetings with veterans across the firm. “When an employee reaches out, I readily make myself available,” Rutledge said. “We have to stay focused and help everyone achieve their goals.”

A resident of Harlem, New York, since 1942, she was an active member of Church Women United, a Christian women’s advocacy movement, she is an ordained Elder for the Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church of New York City in Harlem. Adair was the moderator for the 1976 Assembly United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (UPCUSA}. Her husband is the late Reverend Arthur Eugene Adair, founder and minister of the church from 1943 to 1979.

“We are so proud to share this moment with Dr. Adair,” said Dr. Dawson. “We plan to honor her at our upcoming gala in 2021. Her life and her commitment to voting, is a beautiful example for our youth and community.”

How COVID-19 Has Changed the Way We Do Business Forever (Statepoint)

“Small businesses don’t always have the financial resources that larger enterprises often enjoy,” says Ken Martin, managing

“When investments are imperative, borrowing or leasing may be the right solution to acquiring the technology needed to remain competitive.”

When it comes to these upgrades, investments that make it easier for employees to work remotely are a clear priority. Over the next 12 months, 71% of middle

market executives and 31% of small business leaders who plan to invest will spend on technology that facilitates remote work.

“It’s not just a matter of convenience. Businesses that empower employees to work remotely have a clear competitive advantage,” says Denise Menelly, CIT's executive vice president and head of Technology and Operations.

This is a trend that’s likely here to stay. Approximately a quarter of small businesses operating remotely expect -- and want -- these changes to remain permanent after COVID-19 subsides, and about 40% of middle market executives expect the same, with some seeing it as a means to grow the company.

However, this digital transformation puts a premium on a tech-savvy workforce able to support customers and collaborate with colleagues remotely.

While many believe their current workforce has the skills to keep up, businesses are also substantially more likely than last year to say companies need to focus on hiring tech-savvy talent.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has created a great deal of uncertainty for small and midsized businesses, it has in many ways clarified what’s needed to remain successful in an evolving world.

Conducted by The Harris Poll for CIT Group Inc., a leading national bank focused on empowering businesses and personal savers, the survey of leaders of U.S. middle-market and small businesses is designed to illuminate the intersection of technology and talent.

Compared to last year’s survey, significantly more leaders today believe continuous technological investment is a business requirement.

“The resiliency and flexibility that technology

can deliver businesses has been convincingly proven

by COVID-19,” says David Harnisch, president of CIT’s Commercial Finance division. “Business leaders have taken that lesson to heart and are focused on making technology a fundamental part of their ‘tomorrow thinking’.”

Most executives surveyed wish that they’d invested even more in technology over the past 12 months. In fact, more than three in four middle market executives believe investments in technology would have helped their company fare better during the pandemic. For small businesses, roughly half felt similarly.

However, there’s little question how important technology will be going forward, with the majority of respondents saying it’s crucial to future success.

Some may not believe in these astrological productions, but most will agree that 2020 is (and will be) a very extraordinary time in history. I find it interesting that the

last time the triple Saturn-Pluto-Jupiter conjunction took place was 700 years ago in 1320 when the Templars created the debt-based financial and banking system. A system that has been responsible for the enslavement of humankind and generations of suffering by the masses of people to benefit a few.

Nature will always be selective in a change of energy brought about by a change of an Age. In the history of mankind survival in a new age is kinder to those who change their pattern of thinking. I believe COVID-19 is the first test. It is forcing our health care system to consider new strategies.

We may have a vaccine in late 2021 anything before should by approached with caution.

Prevention is our only defense now.

While there have been numerous COVID related deaths throughout the world, there are still millions that have not been affected. I am curious as to why this is the case. I wear a mask out of respect for others and I believe it is always better to error on the side of caution. What fuels the mask debate is the fact that some people who wear mask have tested positive and many people not wearing mask are not getting sick.

Can it be that this new age of Aquarius will cause medical pro-

fessional to change their old beliefs that focus on cure and start to explore new strategies for prevention. How do you truly help the millions of healthy people who are healthy stay healthy when there is no cure coming along anytime soon; prevention is the only answer.

We may not have any scientific data on why millions of people are healthy while many others are not, but it is safe to say our immune system plays a significant role. Those with weak immune systems no matter the age will have a greater risk of attracting a disease then those with a strong immune system no matter the age.

If you approach

health from a holistic approach it is important to bring balance to the mind, body, and spirit to improve the immune system. For many this can mean a change in thinking and a change of lifestyle. We should see more information on natural immune building strategies from our health care professionals, there are many natural options.

One of the things COVID has done is to provide a global awareness of a health crisis that currently has no cure. Some will say that the fact that this happened at the dawning of the age of Aquarius is a coincidence. I believe that what most consider to be a coincidence is a message from the mind of the universe.

ou can’t stand to watch another happily-ever-after movie again.

You’re done with all those romancy novels, tender songs of love, and dreams of flowers every Valentine’s Day. Statistically speaking – and being realistic – that stuff isn’t in the cards for you, and in “Black Women, Black Love” by Dianne M. Stewart, you’ll see how this might have happened.

About a decade ago, the Census Bureau released a sobering fact: nearly three out of four Black women in America were not married. More than half of those women had never

even been to the altar and, says Stewart, it wasn’t really their fault.

“The trouble is not with Black women failing to value marriage,” she says, “it is the shrinking demographic of those whom Black women want to marry.”

The issue, she says, goes back to the time of slavery.

brought to America on slave ships, African women were separated from husbands, families, and cultures and, once here, were shuffled from place to place. For young enslaved women, then, finding a new partner often meant looking elsewhere, “on different estates,” leading to more separation. Sometimes, slave

women had no choice in partners, period: they were told who they were going to marry and procreate with.

Post-war, it was discovered that some of the unions created or forced during slavery weren’t always recorded, leaving former slaves with multiple spouses, scat-

tered families, invalidated marriages, and war-widows who couldn’t prove their status.

By the early 1900s, Black women began losing their husbands – and their own lives – to attacks and lynching. In the 1930s, Aid to Dependent Children (later, AFDC) was created; by the 1960s, such programs “punished Black love” through programs that essentially sent Black men away from their families.

And in this century, the astronomical rates of incarceration of Black men of marriageable age mean fewer Black men on the “marriage market.”

ment, as author Dianne M. Stewart indicates, and the solution may be controversial and absolutely will require change in government, in our collective attitudes, and within an individual woman’s mindset.

To be clear, this isn’t a How-To guide. It’s not even a relationship book, really. Instead, “Black Women, Black Love” lays out an eye-opening, painful, provocative history lesson that points solidly back to, and underscores, Stewart’s point: that Black Americans – men and women – have been manipulated for centuries toward a dearth of romantic options, through no fault of their own.

And yet, before offering a number of ideas for change within the Black community, Stewart reserves some blame for Black Americans themselves. She points, for instance, at perceived “value” that allows unmarried Black men to “develop simultaneous relationships” and delay settling down, and she examines Black attitudes toward dark and light skin and perceptions of marriageability.

This leaves readers with thought-provokers, things to reflect upon, and reasons to roll up their sleeves.

There’s work to do, and “Black Women, Black Love” could finally get you that happily-ever-after, after all.
