s spring approaches, Astorians are turning to layers to contend with unpredictable temperatures. We spotted long coats, both cozy and classic, all over the streets of western Queens; this universal outerwear can be styled in tons of different ways. Many locals made neutral wardrobe staples more visually interesting by mixing different textures or incorporating an accent piece.

storia’s Steinway Street is home to a plethora of shops, cafés and hookah bars, and Le Luxe Beautique is joining the scene as the area’s newest business. Jan. 15 marked the grand opening of the sleek salon, which featured a DJ, refreshments and giveaways. Since then, Le Luxe Beautique has been a one-stop shop for clients’ beauty needs, complete with tons of glamour and a classic, clean look. The salon offers a range of services, including lash extensions, brow shaping and tinting, blowouts and full-service makeup. “I wanted to do a combination of different services in one place,” said Elizabeth Jeanty, the salon’s owner. “As a mom of two, I know how hard it is to scramble to get a day [for yourself], so it’s like, you come in, you get everything done and you’re out the door.”

According to Jeanty, many clients book multiple services at once and get to relax in the salon while watching whatever movie or TV show the salon is playing that day. Jeanty said that the salon’s liquor license is in the process of being approved this year and customers will soon be able to enjoy a glass of champagne while they wait. Le Luxe has a plush couch in the waiting area, rows of curved lash beds for getting eyelash extensions and an elegant flower wall that guests can pose in front of at the end of their salon visit. For years, Jeanty, who originally grew up nearby in the Jackson Heights area, worked as a freelance makeup artist, so the beauty industry was always one of her passions. Over time, her passion developed into a dream to have her own salon and when the opportunity arose to open her business on Steinway Street, she knew she had to take it. “I knew I wanted to be in Astoria,” Jeanty said. “It’s great for traffic. It’s so diverse [and] you meet different people. In Jackson Heights where I grew up, it’s the same thing. It’s a melting pot of so many different ethnicities [and] people — I love that.” All of the staff at Le Luxe Beautique — from the salon’s lash technician to its hairstylist — emphasize attention to detail and create a glamorous experience that makes a trip to the salon feel like a quick getaway instead of a chore. “I hope to bring something entirely different than what’s in the area,” Jeanty said. “I want it to be a highend salon, where people feel comfortable, they enjoy the whole experience of being here and they’re 100% satisfied as a customer; that’s really important to me.”

n bright days, the sun beams through the large-scale windows on the main training floor at Yug Wellness, a yoga and wellness studio that opened on Feb. 5. The two-floor studio offers vinyasa and hatha classes, and eventually plans to offer aerial yoga as well. The wellness studio is as vast and beautiful as it is unique: Since Astoria is a true melting pot, Yug offers classes not only in English, but also in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. In the future, Yug plans to add languages like Russian and Japanese so that everyone can incorporate yoga into their routine without limitation.

“This is New York, so English is like a foreign language, and in these communities they’re hesitant to do things like this because they’re worried they won’t understand the language,” said Yug’s owner, Erika Ferrentino. “But also in terms of connecting to the practice of yoga, if you’re not sitting there trying to translate everything, then you can really connect with your body more and your breathing and really focus.” In Sanskrit, “yug” means union; it’s the origin of the word “yoga,” as the goal is to create synchronicity between the body, mind and soul. That union is exactly what Ferrentino was seeking when she first started her own yoga journey during the pandemic. At
the time, she worked in a completely different industry: investment banking. “I was at Morgan Stanley; I worked my way up over 17, almost 18 years,” Ferrentino said. “My last position there was associate complex manager, so I was supervising upward of 600 people. It was a big job and I loved it.”

When the pandemic caused the city to shut down in March 2020, Ferrentino was juggling her full-time job with guiding her two young children, then ages 3 and 6, through the new experience of virtual learning. She, like many people, started experiencing severe anxiety during this period of high stress and uncertainty. Her anxiety was causing panic attacks and a scary symptom where her vision would momentarily black out. After going to several doctors and doing tests, the results kept coming back saying the symptoms weren’t physical, but a result of stress. Ferrentino didn’t like the idea of relying on medicine to treat her anxiety and was determined to find a natural way to help herself. When a doctor first suggested yoga, she was skeptical to say the least. “I was like, ‘All right, I’ll try it,’” Ferrentino said. “Yoga studios were closed at the time, so I found a studio that offered private sessions and after the first one, I fell in love. I didn’t realize how disconnected I was with just breathing. I was just holding my breath all the time. I was not present, and I was emotionally bankrupt. I was still making great money, but I was empty, and [yoga] changed my life.” Ferrentino immersed herself in learning as much as she could about yoga by reading dozens of books and even taking a teacher training course at Atmananda in Astoria. She obtained her training license, even though she wasn’t looking to be an instructor; she simply wanted to learn everything she could. Eventually, she decided to open Yug Wellness.
“After 17 1/2 years, I left the bank and I decided I was going to open a wellness center,” Ferrentino said. “Everyone thought I was crazy to leave a lucrative career, and I was like, I’m not spending the second half of my life at a bank. This is not living and I’m not doing it.” In October of 2021, Ferrentino found and rented a space. It had been empty for over a year and needed renovation, but she didn’t go through the process alone. She had been making meaningful connections with others in the yoga community, such as one of her current instructors, Angelica Tamayo, who she met at Atmananda. Tamayo has been crucial to the entire process and was involved throughout the renovation. “I think this place gives us many opportunities to help others,” Tamayo said. “And I’m very happy that we have a community for everybody. As immigrants, we get rejected for many reasons, but this space is completely open and pure energy. We are very attentive and I
think when people come here they can feel that.” Ferrentino also sublets three of the rooms in the studio for beauty and wellness services such as IV therapy, skincare services and beauty services such as botox and filler. The entire purpose is to add to the feeling of health and wellness for anyone who walks through the door. “I want to create a space where people can go and feel better than when they came in,” Ferrentino said. “That might be yoga or meditation. It might be getting a facial. It’s a judgment-free zone where you can choose what you want to do to make your life better.”

Retirement Plans
Pay attention to the required minimum distribution rules for traditional IRAs. Individuals 72 and older must take annual withdrawals or pay a 50% penalty. To arrive at the 2021 RMD amount, start with your IRA balances as of Dec. 31, 2020, and use the tables in IRS Pub. 590-B. The amounts can be taken from any IRA you pick. The same rules apply to 401(k)s and similar workplace retirement plans…with two exceptions: First, people who work past 72 can delay RMDs from their current employer’s 401(k) until they retire, provided they own no more than 5% of the firm that employs them. Second, for people with multiple 401(k)s, 403(b)s and the like, the required minimum distribution must be taken from each account. If 2021 is your first RMD year, you have until April 1, 2022, to take the RMD. The distribution will still be based on your total IRA balance as of Dec. 31, 2020. If you opt to defer your first RMD to 2022, you will be taxed in 2022 on two payouts: The one for 2021 that you deferred and the RMD for 2022. This doubling up would hike your 2022 income and could push you into a higher income tax bracket. Charitable donations made directly from a traditional IRA can save taxes. People 70 ½ and older can transfer up to $100,000 yearly from IRAs directly to charity. Qualified charitable distributions can count as RMDs, but they are not taxable, and they are not added to your AGI and won’t trigger a Medicare premium surcharge.

Many key dollar limits on retirement plans will be higher in 2022. The maximum 401(k) contribution rises to $20,500. People born before 1973 can contribute an extra $6,500. These limits also apply to 403(b) and 457 plans. The cap on SIMPLEs ticks up to $14,000. People 50 and up can put in $3,000 more. Retirement plan contributions can be based on up to $305,000 of salary. The paying limitation for defined-contribution plans increases to $61,000. Anyone making over $135,000 is highly paid for plan discrimination tests. The 2022 paying cap for traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs remains $6,000, plus $1,000 as an additional catch-up contribution for individuals age 50 and older. But the income ceilings on Roth IRA payins go up. Contributions phase out at AGIs of $204,000 to $214,000 for couples and $129,000 to $144,000 for singles. Also, deduction phaseouts for traditional IRAs start at higher levels, from AGIs of $109,000 to $129,000 for couples and $68,000 to $78,000 for single filers. If only one spouse is covered by a plan, the phaseout for deducting a contribution for the uncovered spouse starts at $204,000 of AGI and ends at $214,000. More low-income retirement savers will qualify for the savers’ credit in 2022. The break is for certain individuals who stash money in an IRA 401(k), 403(b), SEP or similar retirement plan. er’s credit of $2,000 for joint filers and $1,000 for others is capped at 50%, 20% or 10% of contributions, depending on AGI. For 2022, it fully phases out at AGIs over $34,000 for single filers, $51,000 for heads of household and $68,000 for married couples filing jointly. Retirees rehired by their former employers won’t disqualify a pension plan, the Service reminds employers. A rehire because of unforeseen circumstances, such as the coronavirus pandemic, won’t jeopardize the bona fide retirement status of the individual’s former retirement. So, for example, public school districts seeking to address urgent hiring needs can rehire former teachers and other staff who have retired and have begun receiving pension benefits. Also, if the plan permits, those employers may continue receiving the benefits even after they are rehired. There’s also this pension rule to help keep older workers on the job: Employees who are at least age 59 or the plan’s normal retirement age can continue to work for the employer and receive in-service pension benefits.

COMPLETED IN 2013 | 27 RESIDENCES Modern spaces was involved in every aspect of this 7-story gem of a project. From the unit mix, floor plan creation, down to the interior design of the building, and naming it. Modern Spaces chose to name this project The Bindery as a nod to one of the largest industries in Long Island City in the early 20th Century when paper mills, printing presses and book binderies lined area streets. With its brick façade, exposed brick in the interiors and industrial finishes throughout, this building offered a departure from the glass and metal panel buildings that were being built in the area at that time. Buyers and locals ate it up. Most of the residences were sold pre-construction and Modern Spaces broke PSF (price per square foot) records for buildings sold East of the Waterfront. The Bindery was a hugely successful project for Modern Spaces.

The bar doesn’t have any social media accounts or a website, making it more frequented by locals than people looking for an Instagrammable meal online. However, the seven-days-a-week bar has four stars on Yelp with comments commending the great bartenders and community vibes. With televisions playing games, a pool table and drinks, McCaffrey & Burke would be a good setting for those looking for a casual place to watch March Madness.

The restaurant sells small plates of food, including crispy fried buttermilk wings, turkey and bean chili, burgers and tacos.
