Wedge Tips If you are having trouble with your wedges, here are some tips: Thin Shots: First check your ball position. For any of your full shots with your wedges, play the ball in the center of your stance. Too many players will play the ball too far forward in their stance. This will cause you to catch the ball on the upswing instead of the downswing causing you to catch it thin.

Fat Shots: Again check your ball position. You can also make a fat shot with the ball too far forward in your stance. A lot of people do not understand that both of these shots can be caused from the same problem.

What you want to do is take a practice swing, and find out where the club comes into the ground.

Remember you want the divot (or contact with the ground) in front of the ball – not behind it. Now you

can make sure you will contact the ball at the correct point in your swing.

One of the most important things to remember is to keep your weight centered with your wedges. Do not set up with your weight leaning forward or backward, and always follow through. These tips are for full wedge shots only, not your partial shots. And also remember to not get your feet so wide that you sway instead of making a nice turn through the hitting area.

Note: Another thing to check today is your pitching wedge loft so that you can fit your other wedges correctly. A lot of the newer clubs will have a stronger loft on the pitching wedge than previous clubs.

As we near the end of summer and head into the early fall – we will notice our summer crop of vegetables begin to slowly die off and the excitement of “picking” is coming to an end. But before you pack it in for the year – make sure you give one last bit of attention to the garden for a fall clean-up. Pull out all of the plants that have stopped producing and toss them in the compost pile or feed them to the chickens. ho wouldn’t want to catch a glimpse of these beautiful birds! Not to be confused with the Blue Jay, the Bluebird is actually a cousin of the American Robin and shares some of the same coloring; the male sports a rusty red breast, white belly and a brilliant blue head, back and tail. The female is grayer but is adorned with blue tinges on her wings and tail giving her a softer elegant look. These stunning birds are native to Texas and year-round residents.

Bluebirds will nest in tree cavities and they readily set up home in Bluebird houses. Put your nesting box up well before breeding season to attract a breeding pair and attach a guard to keep predators from raiding the eggs. Face the entrance hole east and towards open habitat. The female will build the nest typically having two broods (sometimes as many as four) a year of 4-5 pale blue eggs. The eggs hatch in 12-14 12 Shot of Texas Magazine™

days and both mama and papa will feed the fledglings. Interestingly, the young from the first brood will help feed the second-brood babies – it’s a family affair!

Bluebirds like open fields and meadows to scan the ground for prey; they feed on insects and berries. They love mealworms! If you put the mealworms out at the same time each day, eventually the bluebirds will be perching around the feeder waiting for you. As they become more trusting you can even place mealworms in the palm of your hand, holding it very still, and they will eat out of your hand! Use dried mealworms in a mealworm feeder and enjoy the show!

FISHING in August The easiest way to explain what fishing has been like this year is phenomenal.

With the amount of rainfall we have seen in the spring, the Guadalupe River flooding four times, and the early arrival of a tropical storm, no doubt, it is a wet year and could potentially continue to be. But this rain has not hindered our fishing one bit.

Sure, we have had to move off of areas that would produce in the spring and early summer, but I think these adjustments have provided bigger fish for many anglers. Many folks get scared when they hear the bays are flooding and I have even had a few try to cancel. After some reassurance and explaining about how this freshwater helps our bays tremendously, I know they are happy they didn’t cancel, because most of them walked away with a personal best.

A

s for August, even if the rain continues to be steady, I know we will continue to see some of our best fishing yet. Redfish have already started moving back into our bays, and on the August days when it is a slick off, there is nothing better than chasing pods of redfish down the shorelines. Everybody knows the saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Each day I am on the water, I have watching and paying attention and believe I may have unlocked a key to one of San Antonio Bay’s secrets. Obviously,

I am not going to give it away in this article, but for the last couple months it has proven itself, and I cannot wait to prove my theory again in August.

This year has been one of my best years for trophy trout on the Middle Coast, and it is due to fishing certain areas during certain times. In doing this, we have set many personal bests and even upgraded a few clients on trout of a lifetime. For the month of August, if we can keep similar conditions in weather and water, I believe we can put this new key into motion again. With the help from the return-

ing pods of redfish it may be even better, because I am a firm believer to catch a trophy trout, you must surround yourself with redfish.

In saying that, you will be able to find me on the water many days an hour or so before daylight if need be, or staying out well past when the weekend traffic has decided to call it a day. I will be positioning myself on particular stretches of shoreline, making sure we are jumping out of the boat at the correct time armed with topwaters and soft plastics.

Remember, do not be scared of freshwater flow into a bay system. Yes, it might mean you have to change your game plan a little, but that is one of the most exciting parts of my days, trying to figure out the pattern on these fish. Water depth, bait fish, bottom structure, ect. If you want to improve yourself, get away from spot fishing, and start learning how to read the water, pay attention at each location of the day. Try to answer the why’s or why nots, and learn from it.

Eric has been at the ranch for 11 years, but started hunting at the ripe old age of four. What You Don’t Know About Lake Calaveras

“One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.” Dr. Seuss could have been at Lake Calaveras when he wrote those immortal words.

ake Calaveras is a reservoir located in Bexar (pronounced Bear) County, about 15 miles southeast of San Antonio on Calaveras Creek, a tributary of the San Antonio River. The reservoir was created by the construction of Calaveras Creek Dam in 1969, and was built specifically to deliver cooling water to the power plants that provide electricity to San Antonio. So, it makes perfect sense that this dam and lake, along with the smaller Braunig Lake, are

owned and operated by City Public Service (CPS,) the energy provider for the City of San Antonio. You gain access to these lakes by way of the Lakes Calaveras and Braunig Parks, also owned by CPS. To the average man (or woman) on the street, these may just seem to be Fun Facts to Know and Tell. But to the serious angler, especially those that are fanatical enough to fish year round, this is necessary information.

As stated above, Lakes Calaveras and Braunig are “cooling lakes” for power plants, and this is a big deal. Most of these power plants use steam to turn turbines that generate electricity. Once the steam has done its job, it must be cooled back into water in order to be stored in the lake and reused. The lake water is run through a system of pipes to pull the heat out of the steam once it has done its job. The now warmer water in the pipes is returned to the lake, increasing the water temperature at the location where the water is discharged back into the lake, as well as heating the adjacent water as it circulates around the lake.

And this is why it is a big deal: This warmer water in the lakes lengthens the growing season for all fish in the lake and essentially puts the fish ahead of schedule, as far as developing, spawning and other daily fish activities go.

Every December-February the anglers that already know this secret head out to their “cooling lake” of choice. And many of those are heading straight for Lake Calaveras, where the predominant winter fish are hybrid striped bass, channel and blue catfish, and red drum.

Yes… red drum, or rat red, or bull red, or just plain ol’ Texas redfish, the same saltwater fish that you know and

love; and they are alive and thriving in the fresh water of Lake Calaveras, although they do not start their lives there and cannot reproduce in freshwater, either.

According to Texas Parks and Wildlife “For the first three years of their lives, red drum live in the coastal [sic] bays or in the surf zone near passes. As they mature, they move from the bays to the Gulf of Mexico where they remain the rest of their lives. [sic] Between the third and fourth year, the red drum reaches sexual maturity. Spawning season is from mid-August through mid-October in Gulf waters, near the mouths of passes and shorelines.”

But the problem they had was that the red drums’ popularity outpaced their populations.

Texas Parks and Wildlife explains: “Many [sic] will remember in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s when red drum all but disappeared from our bays. Management measures were adopted in the late 1980’s which included banning commercial netting, implementation of bag and size limits, and the designation of red drum as a game fish.

In addition to implementing these traditional management measures, Coastal fisheries began a stocking program to enhance the wild population of red drum. Thanks to these management measures and research into the mysteries of red drum life history, the fishery has recovered to arguably one of the best in the nation, and represents one of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department – Coastal Fisheries’ greatest success stories.”

Today there are about 20 cooling lakes in Texas that can be fished. Of those, only three receive red drum stock regularly. They are Lakes Calaveras and Baunig (near

San Antonio,) and Fairfield Lake, (near Palestine.) Texas Parks and Wildlife sends about 1.5 – 2.0 million fingerlings (very young, small fish) to these lakes annually. Red drum have been stocked into a few other lakes, but not regularly and not with the success rate that the three lakes named have had. The other characteristic that these three lakes have, in addition to the warming effect of cooling water for power plants, is hard water. Yes, the mineral deposits that ruin our water heaters and leave white film in all of our glasses is a necessity for the red drum. Their cells require a balance of water and dissolved minerals, such as calcium and sodium, to survive.

The reason that large numbers of red drum must be stocked into these lakes is, although they still spawn, they cannot reproduce in freshwa-

ter. Bad for the fish…good for the fisherman. Because they have little else to do but eat and grow, they tend to be larger than their saltwater relatives. It is not unusual to catch 10 – 15 lb. drum, especially since they live for years (the documented record being 37 years.) Additionally, they can be fished year round and there is no maximum requirement on size, since they don’t have to worry about the fish reaching breeding size. There is a three per day catch limit, which can and has been used as an excuse to go back to fish the next day… and the next.

The freshwater record for red drum in Texas is held by a fish caught in Fairfield Lake in 2001: 36.83 lbs. and 44 inches long.

he Blue Lacy dog breed was developed in the mid 1800â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s by the Lacy Brothers of Burnet County, Texas (Frank, George, Edwin, and Harry Lacy). The family is said to have used greyhound, scent-hound, and coyote stock.

The Blue Lacy is officially recognized by the National Kennel Club (NKC).

The Blue Lacy has a smooth, sleek coat (usually gray, sometimes red or cream, with some white on the chest and sometimes on the paws).

Adults are 18-25 inches at the shoulder and weigh 25 - 50 pounds, with unique yellow to orange colored eyes. The blue lacy has a natural herding instinct which enables it to work everything from chickens to the toughest Texas Longhorn cattle.

The breed is known to be extremely intelligent and very easy to train.

the proud spirit and heritage of our state; and WHEREAS, Like the Texas longhorn, the Blue Lacy is a Texas original; the only dog breed to have originated in this state, Lacys are named for brothers George, Ewin, Frank, and Harry Lacy, who moved to Texas from Kentucky in 1858 and settled in the area of Burnet County; and WHEREAS, The Lacy family bred cattle and hogs, so it was natural that they would also breed dogs to work them; the family is said to have used greyhound, scenthound, and coyote stock in creating the animal that took their name; and WHEREAS, For a hundred years, Blue Lacys were a common fixture on ranches in the Southwest, where it was said that one such dog could do the work of five cowboys; intelligent, energetic, fast, eager to work, and easy to train and handle, Lacys herded cattle, hogs, and chickens, and also served as droving and hunting dogs; and WHEREAS, With the declining use of working dogs on ranches, Lacys almost disappeared as a breed; since 1975, however, there has been a dedicated effort to save them, and their numbers now total more than a thousand; most reg-

istered Lacys are currently bred in Texas and sold to residents of the state; and WHEREAS, While these gentle, versatile dogs continue to be used on ranches, they are also becoming highly prized again as hunting dogs and are proving valuable, as well, in search and rescue work, owing to their keen scenttrailing ability; in addition, their easygoing way with children, their aptitude for jogging, agility courses, and games of Frisbee, and their suitability as watch dogs are all contributing to their growing popularity as family pets; and WHEREAS, A mediumsized dog with a short, smooth, sleek coat, the Lacy stands from 18 to 25 inches tall when full- grown and weighs approximately 30 to 50 pounds; all Lacys carry a rare blue-color gene, even though they are divided into three color classifications: blue, red, and tri-color; and WHEREAS, Lacys are recognized and registered through the National Kennel Club, Continental Kennel Club, Universal Kennel International, Lacy Game Dog Registry, Texas Lacy Game Dog Association, and American Pet Registry, Inc.; and WHEREAS, Along with its place of origin and its ranching pedigree, this compan-

A Christmas Miracle

Life in the Ranch Sponsor Lindsey Sharp Celebrates Life After Near-Fatal Labor

I

n the 21st century, most families and mothers-tobe experience childbirth with minimal health complications. Welcoming a new baby into the world is supposed to be a joyous time, but earlier this year, joy nearly turned to tragedy after an amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) nearly cost Lindsey Sharpe her life. Sharpe is now sharing her story so other expecting parents know the warning signs and symptoms of preeclampsia and amniotic fluid embolism – which is the leading cause of death during labor or shortly after birth. According to the AFE Foundation, death occurs within an hour after symptoms start in roughly 50 percent of cases.

“My husband Jeff and I were so excited to welcome our third child into our family.

We already have two wonderful little girls, so when doctors told us we’d be expecting a son on June 3rd, which is my birthday, we were overjoyed! Most of our pregnancy was pretty 28 Shot of Texas Magazine™

routine until I started to experience some problems during my seventh month. Our first health scare involved kidney stones.

Now, anyone who’s suffered through these can tell you kidney stones can be quite painful, but they are not normally fatal.

Our family worked through this complication only to experience the symptoms of preeclampsia about a month later.

Preeclampsia occurs when a pregnant woman has high blood pressure and begins to show signs that some of her organs, like the liver and kidneys, may not be working properly. I was experiencing some pretty high blood pressure readings, headaches, and swelling so extreme in my hands and feet that it hurt to walk and function normally.

I also started to experience contractions. I knew something just wasn’t right. Over about a week’s time, I made repeated visits to the ER, but each time was sent home and told to rest.

After my last ER visit, I was sent to see a specialist. This was

May 4, 2016. At this appointment, the specialist administered several blood pressure readings. I knew something was amiss because the physician repeated the test several times and even turned the light out and exchanged the blood pressure cuff to make sure the readings weren’t faulty. My blood pressure was 190/120.

The doctor instructed me to immediately drive to the hospital because the baby needed to be delivered.

I arrived at the hospital uncomfortable, but excited to deliver my son despite knowing I was about a month early. After being admitted, I called my husband Jeff and my mom to share the news. We didn’t deliver that evening, and the next morning I woke up in a panic. I couldn’t breathe. I was in tremendous pain and I couldn’t hear out of my left ear. Physicians made the decision to go through with an emergency C-section. On May 5,

2016, our son Keaton was delivered. He was happy and healthy, but it would be weeks before I got the chance to meet him. You see, I now know I experienced an amniotic fluid embolism.

The first stage of AFE typically includes cardiac arrest and rapid respiratory failure. My heart stopped working properly right after delivery. I lost consciousness and stopped breathing. My body shut down. I believe several miracles or situations of fate occurred that saved my life that day. For whatever reason, my Csection took place in the ICU that day. I was where I needed to be for life-saving measures to take place. There was also a special event at the hospital that day and due to the festivities, two specialists were on-site who I credit for saving my life. These physicians were familiar with how to care for someone experiencing amniotic fluid embolism. AFE is an adverse reaction that occurs when amniotic fluid enters your circulatory system. It cannot be prevented, and the reason why this reaction occurs is unknown.

It is often fatal for the mother. I personally required a breathing tube and dialysis to survive. I spent 10 days unconscious in the ICU. I don’t remember much, except I do believe I experienced what people only read about – visions of my life after death. My sister started a Facebook prayer group I feel so very grateful for the thousands of people who prayed for my recovery. Upon waking up, I recall asking for one thing. I scribbled ‘Prayer’ on a piece of paper. 20 days after delivering my son, I finally was well enough to meet him and to see my daughters. This entire experience has restored my belief in what’s truly important in life. I also want to education others about AFE and help families prepare for the unexpected. I was one of the lucky one. I feel truly blessed with life this holiday season and will value each new day I have to share with my family.

WingShooting Continued from page 17 Eric trains most of the field dogs that the lodge uses. He loves English-line dogs, like English cocker spaniels and setters. He trains them from puppies and their bond with him is unflappable. The dogs point and flush the pheasant, quail and other upland birds and then retrieve the ones that are successfully taken by guests. Together, Eric and his dogs provide an incredible experience to the ranch’s clients.

The ranch’s diverse terrain is a perfect habitat for upland bird hunting in Texas, as well as decoyed mallard duck hunting and dove hunting excursions in season. “He’s a jolly good fellow, which nobody can deny!” He is akin to a yearlong Santa Claus, here, there, everywhere, spreading joy, warmly, generously worldwide, through music and song. He is a musician, writer, publisher, voiceover artist, composer, and teacher, who performs his music locally in central Texas, as well as globally. While he speaks and performs some Spanish, as well as German and Czech, he has experienced music itself to be the only language understood throughout the world! For a delightful experience involving great musical variety, attend one of Ed Kliman’s performances, and enjoy his talent and showmanship!

Ed Kliman was born in an Army hospital in Arkansas, to parents who relocated often, due to his father’s military service. Ed left the family nest at 15, handling life on his own, with a guitar strapped on his back ever since! He survived by playing bars, working in auto plants and steel mills in Detroit, and raising circus tents. Ed has fulfilled the role of legal secretary, ad copywriter, sportswriter, feature writer, and truck loader in Chicago.He worked as a bar manager in Wisconsin, followed by co-ownership of a blues bar in Austin. While staying true to himself, with his love of music, Ed is a musical therapist for an addiction rehab clinic in Austin, as well as a hospice care facility.

Mostly self-taught, Ed plays guitar and harmonica of all types, in addition to banjo, mandolin, dobro, piano, organ, bass, bouzouki, baglama or saz, shakuhachi flute, dumbek, congas, taiko drums, and more. He offers lessons on guitar, mandolin, dobro, bass, harmonica and voice, for beginner to advanced students. He receives royalty payments from around the globe for licensed music, including rock, blues, jazz, classical, medieval Japanese, Algerian Rai, reggae, and folk. His music is in videos, movies, ads, background, radio, and corporate productions from Tulsa to Taiwan and Baton Rouge to Budapest; it

has been contracted for video games, commercials for clients, such as the city of Detroit, a furniture retailer in Tampa Bay, HBO, Dell Computers, and Toyota, as well as professional Shakespearean productions in the US and Europe. Ed performs original lyrics, as well as those by famous writers, including Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Li Po, and God from the Old Testament.

Ed’s influences are vocals of Ray Charles, arrangements by Billy Strayhorn, and musical directing by Quincy Jones. There are more than 1,000 songs, stored within his personal memory bank. “Texas Music Forge” is his own production company, and he is owner and publisher of a music library, MusicForShakespeare.net. Dressed in authentic costume, winding through twisted medieval streets, Ed has played in London, Istanbul, and Prague, in schools, shows and bands. Ed owns all his own music, including back catalogs of dozens of albums, and five current CDs on iTunes, Amazon, and Googleplay. He is also immodestly proud of his library of classical history.

Ed has performed in palaces, prisons, casinos, blues bars, luxury hotels, strip clubs, and mafia hangouts. He has played for TV, theater for European aristocrats, millionaire’s parties, Mardi Gras, and the Kentucky Derby, plus turkey shoots and seasonal grape harvesting at wineries. Ed states his favorite venue was playing his own music in a 300-year-old opera hall in Prague, near a plaque, which marked the exact spot where Mozart directed the house orchestra. He is currently working on music for a children’s theatrical production in Europe. Ed has recently discovered a magical, enjoyable duo, by playing with Carl Schmid, a 38-year veteran of the fiddle and violin.

When inquired about goals, Ed stated, “Like Louie Armstrong or Pablo Cassals, I

wish to make at least one little corner of this world a more beautiful place through playing music, into my advanced old age, and to die without an enemy in the world.” He said, “It all comes down to stewardship of the gifts one is given!” Ed Kliman is making his trip to Rome during the summer of 2017.
