Fall Bird Migration

F

all is the time of the year when many birds are busy preparing for the long journey to their winter homes. Migration is the movement of birds and other animals from one home to another. Some birds will fly thousands of miles to reach their winter homes!

Birds begin the journey to their winter homes before the food supply in the north runs out. Day length and temperature plays a part in triggering the birds’ internal seasonal clocks. Shorter and cooler days means that the food supply is running out. When the water in ponds and lakes begin to freeze over, waterfowl can-

not get at food easily and it is time to fly south where it is warmer and open water and food can be found.

In the fall birds begin to flock together getting ready for the big trip south. This is the time of the year when you will see flocks of blackbirds feeding on berries or the V-formation of flocks of geese in flight.

It is an important time to build up strength and fuel up for the dangerous voyage.

Birds use fat as fuel for their journey. It is important that they have enough to eat before they leave so they are able to store enough fat for the long distance they must travel. Some birds make many stops, fill-

ing up with enough food to make it to the next stage of their journey.

Birds face many hazards during migration. Some may get blown off course or get caught in a storm. Some birds don’t have enough food or fat stored to complete the trip. Hunters claim thousands of ducks and geese each year during fall hunting season. Changes in forestry[Article Submission], agriculture and urban expansion are difficult for birds. These changes affect the habitats of birds and other wildlife. Migrating birds depend on the forests and wetlands and sometimes cannot adapt to the changes.

blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion: There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin...

Allow me to restate that number: 600,000! Over the last several months, Wisconsin ‘s hunters became the 8th largest army in the world.

(That’s more men under arms than in Iran. More than France and Germany combined.) These men, deployed to the woods of a single American state, Wisconsin, to hunt with firearms, And NO ONE WAS KILLED. Game Hunting When planning a game hunting trip it is essential you have both the required skill level and the necessary equipment if the days hunting is to be safe and successful.

The following article gives a few tips to help you plan your game hunting trip.

ame hunting can be both exhilarating as well as dangerous.

Wounded bear and even deer have been known to turn on their attacker. Being prepared and having the right equipment is essential for a successful days hunting.

Before going big game hunting many of the worlds best hunters endorse honing your shooting skills on small game. Only once you are sure of your aim would they advise stepping up.

This makes a lot of sense as a hit on small game is almost always going to result in a kill rather than have a wounded animal dying slowly from infection. Once you can hit that turkey at distance you know you will be capable of making that head shot when you are tracking bear or other big game.

Being a good shot, while important, is only a part of game hunting though. Understanding the animal you hunt is also a must have skill if the hunt is to be a successful one. You will need a good understanding of its habits

and where your prey likes to go. Being able to spot your preys tracks and understand and read them is a great skill that comes with study and experience.

Sometimes the hunter waits for his prey in a stand, either in a tree or at ground level. The skill to this type of game hunting is to remain undetected, having the patience to stand still for hours on end, being able to attract your prey to the area and having the determination to not give in until your prey turns up.

Another important factor of course, is your equipment. You must have the right weapon for the game you hunt otherwise you put yourself at risk from a wounded animal and the animal at risk of a slow death. If you are bow hunting make sure it has a

draw weight packing a big enough punch to make the clean kill on your chosen target.

Their are many different makes, variations and models of hunting rifle available today and the choice you make will be entirely based on the prey you hunt. Famous brands like the Winchester and Remington as well as relatively unknown brands like the Sakko 75 hunting rifle and the Tikka T3. Weatherby and Ruger are also rifles which are used by some hunters. Whichever hunting rifle you use, just make sure it is suitable for the game you hunt.

For the majority of huntsmen, big game hunting is not just a way to pass the time. Only a strong passion could prompt someone to rise in the early hours, during the coldest time of year, to go sit out in a wood with no promise of even getting a shot.

ovember marks the start of many changes in our bay system here on the Middle Texas Coast in Seadrift, Texas. It is all driven by the first major cold front, from what I have seen in my years down here, is it can be in the 20’s before Thanksgiving, or we can still be duck hunting in shorts and short sleeve shirts. If winter shows up, our birds show up and the opener of duck season can be a show of non-stop volleys. On the other hand, if winter doesn’t show, I will be honest and straight forward with my customers, explaining the situation and rather than staring at racks of decoys and empty skies, we spend the day wading down some of my favorite stretches of shoreline looking for that trophy trout or pod of redfish.

While most outdoorsmen have indulged themselves fully into duck hunting, I will play the weather. Although not all days are sunny and warm, there are many great days of fishing during the month of November. With water temperatures falling from the previous month, bait fish start to seek refuge in the muddy bottom back lakes. These shallow often semi –clear lakes retain heat and therefore can be a few degrees warmer than surrounding waters.

In turn, if a fish wants a meal they must congregate where the bait is. All our back lakes are different in bottom structure and size, but they all offer cover from harsher climates. A few of the most popular lakes offer 5-7 foot holes and also shallow grass flats that fish will pull up onto when the sun pops out.

Usually, shortly after the opener of duck season has passed, our boat ramps and water ways become empty. Most folks have moved on to their deer leases until Christmas, another reason why fishing to me can be special.

Having areas to yourself is great, and because of this, fish are not run over all the time and can return to their normal feeding patterns allowing anglers that do seek a screaming drag over a shotgun or rifle, the chance to more easily pattern and stay on a successful bite.

I, myself, do enjoy watching bucks chase doe around and the thrill of stalking a trophy buck, and days I am not on the water either in a blind or fishing, I can be found on the family ranch outside of Seguin, Texas, enjoying the abundant wildlife and guiding hunts. Our family has been managing our native white-tail herd for more than 30 years now and take pride in what we have accomplished.

Whatever outdoor activity draws you in during the month of November, N&M Sportsman’s Adventures has something for every enthusiast. I have dedicated myself to running a full time guiding operation since 2007, and will do my best to meet the needs and standards of any customer.

By Kendall Kahn Captain Nathan Beabout has guided fishing trips and duck hunting trips on the Middle Texas Coast, Seadrift, TX, since 2007. He has fine-tuned his fishing and hunting skills, and has adapted to all skill levels of customers for a successful trip.

Also, working closely with Captain Tricia Whitley and Captain Mike McBride, he learned the areas and skills required for a successful trip in the Port Mansfield area. Spending many days on the water every year, his knowledge and skills of fishing from the San Antonio Bay to Cedar Bayou and Port Mansfield areas have developed and can lead you to a memorable trip. Captain Nathan has decided it is time to open the next chapter of his outdoor passion to the outdoor enthusiast. Not only can he share his knowledge on the coast with you, but also his experience of hunting game on his family’s ranch. Here, Captain Nathan grew up learning how to hunt and stalk the illusive white-tailed deer and wild turkey. Misty Oaks Ranch is one thousand acres of hunting paradise, located 15 miles southeast of Seguin, Texas, and it will surely fulfill your outdoor addiction.

Although fishing is a year round adventure, the winter months host some of the finest marsh duck hunting on the Middle Texas Coast. Setting up in the mangrove and salt grass covered shorelines either in pit blinds or the new Northern Flight Sit up Layout blinds, your winged shoot will be action packed and one to remember. There are about 9 different species of ducks that call this marsh home for a few months out of the year. When conditions are right each of these species will present themselves.

Many hunters seek the Redheads and Pintails for trophy mounts, as they are some of the most colorful of the duck species.

Don’t get him wrong, watching customers fight their personal best, or understanding the presentation technique for that day leading them to bites, means he is doing his job correctly. It’s not always about filling the fish box, but about passing on his passion and knowledge for this sport for future trips and memories. That is why he does it.

His preferred method of fishing is to wade fish artificial. San Antonio Bay hosts a wide range of prime wading areas. Depending on the time of year, you can find yourself fishing back lake marsh, oyster shell, and grassy shorelines. Captain Nathan can adapt to each individual fisherman’s needs, whether a seasoned pro or novice. He will teach and explain techniques for a successful day and some tactics can be retained used to fish in your home water. Cedar Bayou’s re-opening has played a major role in fishing productivity and has provided a wider range of areas to fish away from the crowds.

I wear my new badges with pride! As I’ve noted in previous columns, the Saul Alinsky lovers’ favorite tactic when unable to come up with a cogent response when faced with logic and reason is to divert attention away from their ignorance or invalid argument by calling you names. So is the case here. Hillary is trying to deflect attention away from the fact that she is a pathological liar, a crook, and wholly unfit to hold the office of president of these great United States. It just goes that much farther to reinforce the fact that we are right.

Every time Trump and/or his supporters are called bad names it emboldens us that much more. They think the fix is in because they have academia, the main stream media, millennials and most of the Hollywood Alisters in their corner chanting their mantra, but the fact is calling us racists or homophobes makes us support the Donald that much more. Is that because we think he’s an articulate sophisticated candidate with all the answers? Absolutely not, in fact he’s arguable the most unconventional candidate for this office in history (at least to make it this far) and as cringe worthy as some of his statements may have been, he is the guy representing the rest of us knuckle draggers in flyover country that the political elite have written off as gun toting, flag waving morons clinging to our guns and religion as well as what is left of our constitution. Supporting Donald Trump is like flipping a big fat bird to all of those sophisticated and nuanced academics and talking heads who have deemed us irrelevant.

Voting for Trump is the equivalent of telling the rest of the world that were sick of their shit. We’re through giving our hard earned tax dollars to people who are not only ungrateful but hold us in utter contempt and in many cases hate our guts and want us dead.

Being deplorable is like telling all of our current trading partners that we are through getting the short end of the trade stick and we

will be re-evaluating and re-negotiating every single lop- sided deal that’s been shoved down our throats for decades.

Being irredeemable is the equivalent of taking FACTS and rubbing a gun grabber’s nose in them. You know small little things like that in the last 20 years gun sales and new gun ownership has sky rocketed in this country while violent crimes committed with firearms has not done the same, much to their chagrin, but in fact they’ve done the exact opposite, they’ve decreased. Its telling idiots like New York congressman Charlie Rangel how hypocritical and dismissive he is when he tells a reporter that average citizens don’t need guns but he and his colleagues “deserve and need to be protected” by men with guns.

Being racists apparently is a person “not of color” who disagrees with the current president or any other person “of color”. You’re also a racist if you introduce facts into an argument like the one about the narrative that was the basis of the black lives matter movement (hands up don’t shoot) being proven forensically as completely and utterly false. Or other inconvenient truths like the out of control black on black crime that is utterly ignored by b.l.m. (lower case intentional), Reverend AL and the media in general. And oh by the way if you are “of color” and agree with anything I’ve written on this subject, be prepared to be thrown out of the club as you are unfit to be one of the melanin rich and are nothing but an Uncle Tom! BONUS: You’re also a racist if you think that if you are required to show an I.D. to open a bank account, get a library card, buy booze, buy cigarettes, sign up for welfare, enroll in college, buy a house, rent a house, rent a car, get on an airplane, join a union, get a job, get unemployment and a plethora of other things you should also need one to vote. But what do I know, but hey I’m late for my weekly cross burning.

Being a homophobe apparently means that if you are not a homosexual, you cannot in any way shape or form disagree with anything the radical LGTBQXYZABC123 crowd has to say or otherwise you’re guilty as charged. That includes letting boys pee in the girls restrooms or shower in the girls locker room if they’re gender confused that day lest they have their feelings hurt. Here’s a scientifically proven method to determine one’s gender if confused regardless whether you’re gay or straight: Step 1 Look down, Step 2 Grasp front of pants or bottom of dress with dominant hand Step 3 Unbutton pants and pull down or pull up dress Step 4 Pull down underwear (unless of course you’re going commando, then skip this step) Step 5 Observe genitalia. If you have a penis, you’re a boy, if you have a vagina, you’re a girl.

Pretty simple stuff I know, but sometimes you have to break it down for the learning impaired among us. Bless their hearts!

You’re a xenophobe if you think both the president and the pope are hypocrites for saying we don’t need a wall, all while living behind walls protected by men with guns.

And finally you’re a misogynist if you think men are different than woman GASP! You’re a misogynist if you say “yes mam” and automatically open a door for a woman.

You’re a misogynist if you think that a woman has a right to do anything a man can do as long as she can meet the same minimum physical requirements that a man has to (Special Forces, professional sports, firefighters, roughnecks, etc.). You’re a misogynist if you don’t believe that ALL men are rapists, ALL sex is rape and we live in a rape culture.

You’re a misogynist if you complement the way a woman looks. And last but not least if a woman walks around topless on the streets to protest the inequality of the sexes and how men can walk around topless and you look at her boobies…guess what you are? And yes, I said boobies.

5 Countries – 5 Capra’s –

25 Days

I have 25 species of wild goat “Capra” and thought it would be a great challenge at my age, 76, to see if I could get another five species all at one time. Bob Kern, of the Hunting Consortium said it would be hard to do but he thought he could put it together.

Because France is not “gun friendly” I would use Istanbul as my point of entry and could store my rifle there for my future hunts.

The 1st hunt would be for 3 days in France for a Chartreuse Chamois. Just before I’m about to leave for Istanbul my Turkish representative tells me that all hunting has just been shut down because of the bombing in Ankara that killed 102 people and wounded hundreds. This was not a good way to start. I arrived in Lyon France and drove to the hunting area.

On the way I am given the weather report for the next 3 days, 1st day fog and light rain; 2nd day sunshine and 3rd day light rain and snow which means I have to get my chamois on the 2nd day. The first morning we start climbing at 7 am and it’s foggy.

I can’t see 50 yards in front of me.

Vincent tells me if we climb higher that maybe the fog will clear up. Four hours later and on the very top of the mountain I still can’t see 50 yards in front of me. I stay up there all day and head down to arrive at the truck at 7pm. This made for a long 1st day.

On my 2nd day there was no sun,

same fog and rain but worse. We climb only half way up the mountain and come down at 5 pm.

Rain is now light snow and we are getting nervous about not getting my Chamois. On the 3rd day we start to climb at 7 am and there is no fog but it is snowing. About an hour into our climb we spot 8 Chamois on the very top of the mountain about 1,000 yards away and Vincent says we should try for them before the fog comes in again. We get within 500 yards and he wants me to try a shot but I tell him let’s try to crawl to the next rock and see how close it is.

We get there and it’s right at 290 to 300 yards away and we can’t get any closer. I take the shot and shoot just over his back and he turns and looks.

My next shot hits his shoulder and he drops over. It’s 10:15am and I can see the fog coming and around 10:40 am the fog is all over the mountain and again we can’t see 25 yards in front Continued on page 30

hen people hunt small prey, they usually use hunting dogs to bring their kills. If hunting dogs didn’t exist, hunters would need to go find the prey they hit on their own, losing time. A hunting dog that is trained properly will reduce the amount of useless work that the hunter needs to do.

But, you can’t just train any dog to help with hunting. There are special breeds designed to perform best in the conditions that hunting requires.

But, you can’t find a hunting dog like you would any other normal dog breed.

These dogs are well trained to be able to meet the requirements of hunting.

The training process for a hunting dog is usually a long one, that needs the trainer to be patient and to know how to work with the dog. As for the dog, he needs to have the right attributes to become a proper hunting dog.

Some of the dog breeds that are well suited to be hunters include pointers, spaniels and retrievers. Each of these three have their own traits that are unique to them. Once you choose such a dog, the trainer needs to make the most out of their unique traits.

One trait that all hunting dogs have is a great sense of smell. This helps them track the prey in the field. Another trait is that they’re adapted to outdoor life and can be easily trained. If you want the best possible hunting dog, choose a breed that meets all the requirements. In most cases, people choose Be Beagles, Dachshunds, Bloodhounds or Labradors as hunting dogs.

What about scent and gun fire?

Some dogs will be scared when they hear gun fire. So they need to be specially trained to get used to it. Usually, this is done by conditioning the dog, by getting him used both with game birds and gun fire.

Game birds will be associated this way with gun fire. When he will hear it in the future, he will know that when the hunter shoots, he needs to look lo for the bird. After they get the th prey, they will expect to hear h the gun fire again.

One thing you should do when w training the dog, is getting t him used to a certain scent, s depending on what you y want to hunt with him. If you’re y looking to hunt boar, than t he should know the boar scent, so he can track it.

It’s much harder to do dog training than it is to train them in other areas. But, if you’re a true hunter, you will need a great dog to assist you.

Perhaps one of the eldest activities on the face of the planet is hunting.

The history of hunting, as a result, is also one of the most diverse.

Hunting for food has always been something that human kind has had to do, dating back to the beginning of any civilizations known to man.

As a result of this, there have been thousands of weapons and devices used to hunt.

The history of hunting is far more complicated than any other history in the world, as it stretches so far into the past. In order to understand this history, you need to break down and study each

era where hunting has been a major part of life. While there are exact time lines of when certain guns or weapons were produced, understanding the importance of hunting should be done on a far broader scale.

There is much more to the history of hunting than when the gun was created.

THE FIRST ERA, PRE-CIVILIZATION In this time frame, from before great cities to the first starts of basic civilization, the human race survived on their skills of scavenging and hunting. In cultures similar to those of the first era

and they held these hunts daily to feed themselves. Unlike today, all hunting was for survival, and none of it for sport. All of the materials from the killed animals was used, from the bones to the pelt. Hunting was also a method of determining who was the bravest warrior. The bravest would hunt the ferocious creatures that lived nearby their homes. These kills were a vital part of the early hierarchies.

A wide variety of different weapons were used during this era, from slings to spears crafted of wood and stone. For large prey, the hunters would work together in packs, similar to how a wolf hunts to bring down their quarry. The only trophies kept were antlers and teeth. Occasionally the skulls would be kept as decoration or as symbols of the clan or family group. This oldest form of hunting was the basis in which the present was formed.

THE SECOND ERA, GROWTH OF CIVILIZATION

These were usually always men, as it was looked down upon for women to participate in this line of work.

This was also the turning point where hunting becoming a sport. Civilizations, such as the Babylonians, the Egyptians, and the Romans all had

their hunters and craftsmen.

The Romans, took hunting as a sport to a whole new level, capturing prey alive for sale or gladiatorial competitions.

Only certain individuals were hunters, allowing the select men to feed those in their community.

THE THIRD ERA, THE MIDDLE AGES Perhaps one of the most interesting times in the history of hunting, is the middle ages. This is the period in time where hunting for food was a vital part of life for many, though restricted. Rules on hunting, such as no hunting in the King’s Forest, was the first real restrictions on hunting present in the world. Only the rich prospered, and the surf classes hunted whatever they could, when they could for survival. Hunting, from boar to deer to fox hunting, became primary sports for the nobility of the time frame. This started the trend of organized hunts for sport.

Colonists to the New World required as much hunting skills as possible, during this period of time, although they progressed quickly from relying on scavenging and hunting to creating farms and plantations. Popular weapons for use in hunting during this time period was forms of archery, slings and throwing spears. The gun was also used, although it had not quite yet reached full levels of popularity.

THE FORTH ERA, THE INDUSTRIAL PERIOD On the heels of the Middle Ages was the Industrial period. This era stretched from beyond the 1700s until just after the start of the 1900s.

The evolution of machines

brought about great changes in hunting. Large farms became very popular, where livestock was raised instead of the practice of hunting wild animals, downgrading hunting to only become a past time. Guns, ranging from muskets to rifles, were being to be used extensively.

Archery was downgraded to sport use only, though it was very popular for tests of skill.

PRESENT DAY

Through these stages of the history of hunting, humans have perfected this activity, with a wide range of weapons. Archers, for example, have many types of bows to choose from. Arrows are just as plentiful as bows, from metal to wood, with many different types of tips. Guns have evolved the same way, with many types of bullets and guns for different types of hunting. Special guns and equipment designed for moose hunting, for example, wouldn’t be the same as deer hunting supplies.

Competitive hunting, such as fox hunting, is still greatly enjoyed by many people who prefer a little more action to their hunting. In the modern world, safety and skill are the requirements for hunting, and it is open for anyone who is willing to learn proper weapon handling and obtain all of the documents necessary to hunt. Regulations on guns and hunting have been developed to prevent species from going extinct. of us. I get the Chamois and come down to the bottom for pictures. This was cutting it close. One down!

I go back to Istanbul to get my rifle and will try to move my hunt up in Croatia for the Kri-Kri Hybrid Ibex. I arrive the next fay and start my hunt in Zagreb, Croatia. My hunt is on Dogi Gtok Island. On the 1st day I shoot a Gold Medal Kri-Kri Hybrid Ibex. I have a few days before I go to Macedonia so we try for a Golden Jackal.

The 1st day we try a couple of drives with the dogs but have no luck. We go to another area the next day and just before dark I take a big male. I still have one more day before I leave for Macedonia. We are going to try for a European Badger. We’ll hunt from a high seat (stand) and maybe get lucky.

A nice badger comes in and one shot later I have my European Badger, I can’t get any luckier than this. Three great animals.

Now I’m off to Skopje, Macedonia for a Kri-Kri Ibex. When I arrive Tony say’s let’s drive to Tikvesh Lake where we will look around, have lunch and start hunting tomorrow. Just before we arrive at camp we spot a European Wild Turkey, a big male with a nice beard and I take him. We go to camp for pictures and skin for life size and I ask if the

guy’s can cook him. They prepared a great casserole with potatoes, carrots, onions and tomatoes for lunch the next day. First thing the next morning I shoot a Gold Medal KriKri Ibex. Afterwards, we come back for lunch and had the best turkey casserole I’ve ever eaten. Tony wants to show me around his hunting area and maybe we can spot something else to hunt. I have all afternoon, so we go scouting. I see Ibex, Tur and a very big Racka Sheep. We make a great stalk and I know have a gold medal sheep.

Next day I’m off to Madrid, Spain for the Balearean Boc (Goat) We arrive in Mallorca, Spain the next morning and go out hunting that afternoon. After one and a half hours of climbing we spot three different types of goat. I make a 225 yard shot

and my long 25 day trip is over. During the 21 days of the trip I never slept in the same bed more than once. I shot four major Capra’s and four different species for a total of 8. Would I do it again? Probably not knowing how much pressure I was under but it sure was a great experience and lots of fun! I’m now stuck on 29. They say Turkey might reopen between now and the end of the season (March), I guess I will be going back one more time.

Turkey is not going to re-open anytime soon. I’ve booked a Tatra Chamois for December 2017 in Slovakia and if they have a cancellation this year I might be able to go in December.

With any luck I will complete my goal of 30 Capra Species (Goat) by the end of next year!

By: Bob Anderson with Custom Design Pools 2 Pound Quail Breast deboned and sliced long ways 1 medium Sweet Onion chopped 1/4 Red Bell Pepper Chopped 1/4 Yellow Bell Pepper Chopped 4 Cloves Garlic Chopped 1 Rib Celery Chopped One Sm Jar Pimentos chopped w/ juice One Graded Carrot Salt & Pepper to taste 1 Chicken Bouillon Cube dissolved in 1/2 cup of Sherry 3/4 cup Parmesan divided 3 times 3/4 cup Romano divided 3 times 1tbs Oregano 1tbs Thyme 1tsp Cayenne 7 Mushrooms Sliced 1 can Cream of Mushroom soup 1 12oz package Spaghetti cooked

Sauté onion, all bell pepper, garlic, celery 3tbs butter and olive oil mixture Cook for 3 minutes.

Add carrots, mushroom, pimientos, Oregano, Thyme, cayenne, saltlt & pepper tto ttaste. t Cook 2 more minutes place off to the side.

Take slice quail breast and rub with you favorite chicken rub Dust a light coating of flour and Sauté in butter and olive mixture.

Cook to medium rare. Place on plate and cover.

Deglaze pan with 1/2 cup of Sherry/Bouillon.

Add contents of other pan and 1 can of Cream of Mushroom soup. Sauté 2 minutes then add quail. Sauté covered 2 minutes more.

Take cooked spaghetti layer half in the bottom of a buttered baking dish.

Sprinkle with a portion of both cheese’s.

Pour in mixture. Sprinkle more cheese’s.

Add top layer of spaghetti and sprinkle rest of cheese’s.

Bake at 325 for 25 minutes until bubbly and hot.

Let sit for 5 minutes and serve. Add more liquid if you want a thinner sauce.

Serves 4.
