he owner of an average single-family home in Saugus -- valued at $426,142 -- will pay $459 more in taxes in January.

The tax bill for an average commercial property -- valued at $1,450,917 -- will increase by $2,819.

Those scenarios will take effect as a result of the new tax rates for the 2019 fiscal year approved unanimously last week by the Board of Selectmen.

“Your tax bill is going to go up because of debt exclusion,” Town Manager Scott C. Crabtree said, referring to the overwhelming town vote to borrow $118-million last year for a new Saugus Middle-High School.

Crabtree noted that last year, the tax rates decreased because of an increase in valuation.

But this year, many property owners will notice a sizeable hike in their taxes because of the borrowing on the school project.

Once again, selectmen followed their past practice of recent years by adopting a plan calculating the lowest possible residential factor -- a plan that would tax commercial, industrial and personal (CIP) property at a maximum share of the tax levy for the 2019 fiscal year at 175 percent.

Overall, residential tax rates for the average single family home in Saugus increased from $11.58 for $1,000 of assessed valuation to $12.18 --

Commercial development spurs new growth The average commercial property value of $1,407,060 increased to $1,450,917. The current average commercial property tax bill of $34,587 is projected to increase to $37,404, according to the Board of Assessors report.

The town has borrowed $65-million on the school project so far and will wind up borrowing $118-million.

“One of the things we’re looking at now is borrowing the rest of it,” Crabtree told selectmen last week.

“There’s more risk if the rates increase and we borrow later,” Crabtree said. “We’re probably looking at borrowing sooner than later,” he said.

The value of the average single family home for the 2018 fiscal year is expected to increase by $17,572 from $408,570. The current average residential tax bill of $4,731.24 will increase to a projected $5,190, according to the report compiled by the Board of Assessors, assisted by Deputy Assessor Ronald J. Keohan Jr. and Assistant Deputy Assessor Tamara Sands.

Overall, CIP tax rates in Saugus increased from $24.58 for $1,000 of assessed valuation to $25.78 -- a $1.20 or 4.88 percent increase.

“This beloved event would also not be possible without the continued support and generosity from residents and local businesses,” he said.

The highlight of the evening, of course, will be Santa’s appearance at the entrance of Town Hall. That is set for 7 o’clock tonight. One of several horse-drawn carriages will drop him off on the sidewalk on Central Street. And he will be escorted up the front steps, into the hall and up to the second floor auditorium.

Once Santa is seated surrounded by his elves in a special chair next to a Christmas tree, kids of all ages (yes, some grown-ups have been known to sit in his lap or on his knee) will get in line so they can greet Santa and have their photograph taken with him. Santa will be available for up to 90 minutes.

An evening program of family-oriented activities actually gets underway at 5 p.m. The events include sleigh rides, a petting zoo, a moon bounce,

hot chocolate, cookies, entertainment, hayrides, story time, and much more.

“The Town is also excited for the return of holiday trackless train rides, which will run weather permitting,” Crabtree said.

“Please join your family and friends and come out to celebrate the beginning of the holiday season as a community,” said Town Manager Crabtree.

The tree lighting event and Santa’s arrival are just part of weekend filled with holiday events: St. Margaret’s Christmas Stroll is scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 1.) The church will serve a meatball sub lunch from 9AM to 5:30PM at St. Margaret’s at 431 Lincoln Ave. in Saugus.

A Saugus teenager talks about the Thanksgiving food drive he’s been running for seven years Editor’s Note: For this week, we sat down with a young Saugonian who exemplifies the meaning of Thanksgiving kindness.

Anthony Zannella, 16, just completed his seventh food drive for the Saugus United Parish Food Pantry -- an annual project he began when he was just nineyears old. Anthony, the son of Anthony and Joann Zannella of David Drive, is in his junior year at Malden Catholic High School. An honor roll student, he plays chess and competes in track and cross country at the school. He played on the football team during his freshman and sophomore years.

Anthony has a 15-year-old sister,

Julianna. He likes to play the guitar in his spare time. We decided to interview Anthony, along with his parents, after learning about his unheralded community service project from an official at the Food Pantry.Some highlights of the interview follow.

Q: Anthony? How did this whole Food Drive project evolve?

Anthony: It started seven years ago when my dad lost his job. We just realized that there were less fortunate families out there who can’t afford a Thanksgiving Day meal. So, I

Readers voice concerns over proposed Saugus Ridge development

To All Residents of Saugus, I write this letter to voice my concerns about the proposed Saugus Ridge development. I feel strongly that Saugus Ridge will adversely affect our Town because of safety issues, and the negative impact it will have on the Town’s natural surroundings, infrastructure, abutters, schools, and already saturated traffic.

Firstly, the future of Pranker’s Pond is at stake. I am deeply concerned about the irreparable damage to the delicate ecosystem, which includes the Saugus River. Changes in runoff will harm historic Pranker’s Pond, the “hidden gem” of Saugus. For many years, residents of Cliff Road fought hard to keep these woods preserved and protected, because it has been a sanctuary and refuge for both residents and wildlife.

Did you know that Saugus Ridge is identified as the habitat of one endangered species? I wonder if other endangered plants and animals may also be at risk of losing their habitats, or worse, their species. How can we be certain there are no other living things here that fall into the endangered or threatened category?

I believe the Town must con-

duct a study during each season to ensure no other endangered or threatened species live here. It makes sense to investigate the site for a full year and determine if any endangered or threatened organisms live here.

In addition to my concerns about land and wildlife preservation, safety of the abutters is an unsettling issue. The proposed “Saugus Ridge” is set upon a ridge, which will require blasting over several months.

This will undoubtedly compromise existing abutters’ foundations. Furthermore, the high pressure Tennessee Gas main that runs parallel to the ridge makes me uneasy. We have witnessed the long-term damage and aftermath as a result of excessive pressure which caused the natural gas lines to explode in Merrimack Valley.

Will the relentless blasting disturb the high pressure pipeline? What analysis or simulation has been completed to ensure that distress to the earth will not cause damage or create explosions?

Moreover, the ridge and the several hundred majestic trees that line it have always provided a natural sound buffer against the continuous Route

One traffic. If the project does indeed move forward, the buffer will no longer exist. How will the sound barrier be replaced for residents?

Next, how will the Saugus Ridge and other housing projects impact the education of our children? How will the new middle/high school house and educate a substantial influx of new students? Is the new school building large enough?

Will additional staff be hired?

Will we have unmanageable class sizes before a new school is even completed?

As you know, the current traffic load is almost unbearable at any time of day. The recent traffic study alone raises eyebrows; receiving an “F” rating. This proposed development will surely add more cars to the highly congested roads. As it stands, there is only one way in and out of the proposed development. One can only imagine the added traffic strain once the development at Hilltop opens. How will residents enter and exit safely on Route 1?

ould you want your child to be inhaling or ingesting formaldehyde -- the same toxic chemical that is used by morticians in embalming dead bodies?

It’s one of those scary questions that parents learned about this week during an hour-long discussion about vaping at the Belmonte Middle School.

Formaldehyde -- a human carcinogen -- is just one of numerous harmful chemicals that can be found in the vapor of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), Beth Williams-Breault told a small group of parents during the latest Wellness Committee Parent Information Series forum.

Parents also learned that there have been documented incidents were maimed or badly injured when lithium ionpowered batteries blew up in vaping devices used by youth.

“The main message here is that we don’t want our children thinking it’s cool,” said Williams-Breault, a prevention and education coordinator for the Middlesex Partnerships for Youth, Inc. “Not Safe -- Not healthy. Big tobacco is funding it. All they want is money. It’s criminal,” she said.

Williams-Breault also briefed the parents on recent enforcement action taken by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“We see clear signs that youth use of electronic cigarettes has reached an epidemic proportion, and we must adjust certain aspects of our comprehensive strategy to stem this clear and present danger,” FDA Chief Dr. Scott Gottlieb said at a recent news conference.

“We’re announcing the largest-ever coordinated initiative against violative sales in the history of the FDA. This is the largest single enforcement action in agency history. It’s aimed at retail and online sales of e-cigarettes to minors.”

The use of e-cigarettes has become an epidemic among teens and needs to be stopped, according to Gottlieb.

He said the agency is cracking down aggressively on sales of vaping products to teenagers and will consider taking e-cigarettes off the market if makers don’t do more to slow the soaring sales to American teenagers. The FDA mailed out 1,300 warning letters and fines to retailers in “a large-scale, undercover nationwide blitz.”

Saugus students disciplined for vaping Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr. told the parents that vaping is not a local problem -- but one

that confronts school districts across the state and nation.

“This is something that all school districts are struggling with right now. It’s nationwide,” DeRuosi said.

He said he planned to bring back Williams-Breault as a consultant to work on programs geared toward students in the Middle School level.

In an interview after the parents’ discussion group, the superintendent said that vaping has already surfaced as a problem at the high school and middle school level.

“We’ve had suspensions in the High School. We had several student athletes found ineligible for athletics last year,” DeRusoi told The Saugus Advocate.

of egress is sufficient and viable? Since some emergency apparatus is unable to travel down Cliff Road, there will be no a back entrance to the proposed development. Have all hypothetical emergency situations been thought through for the worst case scenario? I wonder if first responders are also at greater risk.

Finally, I understand the Town is not meeting the 40b guidelines. Still, why isn’t the Town working proactively to fulfill that requirement? Why hasn’t the Town demanded the newest developments at Hilltop, or Essex Street (mini golf) to carry this burden (40b) on already developed land?

It would be a travesty to exploit this land that teems with wildlife and flora to a housing development. We must preserve one of the few remaining open spaces left in Town, a place all residents can continue to enjoy.

The Saugus Ridge development is not a “done deal”.

But, “little by little,” residential property owners will eventually see the benefits from several major projects.

Commercial development accounted for $862,000 in new growth, according to Michael Serino, chair of the Board of Assessors.

The Essex Landing and AvalonBay mixed-use developments on Route 1 will generate a significant amount of new growth revenue in the future that will lower the tax burden for homeowners, Serino noted.

Crabtree agreed that the future new growth from commercial development would “help tremendously” with the debt

exclusion as well as the financial burden for the average taxpayer, Crabtree agreed.

“That’s why we have an average tax bill that’s one of the lowest on the North Shore,” Crabtree said of the tax benefits that the town has already been enjoying from commercial development..

Q: So, how many houses are we talking about?

Mrs. Zannella: About 35.

Anthony: About 35 or 40.

Q: So, what kind of food did you gather?

Anthony: Everything from canned foods and foods that aren’t perishable. And we had to check the food to make sure it hadn’t expired. And if it had expired, get rid of it.

Q: Canned goods, boxes of cereals, crackers and things like that.

Anthony: Yes. Q: And how many bags was that?

Anthony: About 30 to 40.

Q: And you took that down to the Food Pantry.

Mrs. Zannella: Well, I took it down to the Food Pantry, because it’s only open on Friday mornings when he’s in school.

Q: So, during that first year, you were hooked up to the (Saugus United Parish) Food Pantry?

Anthony: Yes. Q: So, from the beginning, you contributed to the Food Pantry?

A: Yes. Q: About how many people did you help out that first year?

Anthony: We got around maybe 30 to 40 bags.

Q: Where were you going to school then?

Anthony: I was at Our Lady of the Assumption School in Lynnfield.

Q: So, was this your idea or a teacher’s idea?

Anthony: Mostly my idea.

Q: And you bounced the idea off your folks?

Anthony: Yes. Q: And, how did they receive it?

Anthony: They thought it was a good idea.

Mr. Zannella: I had lost my job. And I thought it was a good idea for him to understand that there other people out there who need assistance.

Mrs. Zannella: His idea was to go out and put a sign on telephone poles. I told him, why don’t you just write a note. So he wrote the note and put it in everyone’s mailbox.

Q: So, how many mailboxes did the note go in?

Anthony: This street and the street next to us.

Q: So, what streets?

Mr. Zannella: Susan and David Drives.

Q: And, now, we’re into the seventh year. So, how big was it this year?

Mrs. Zannella: So, we put it on social media now. So, friends, family and I have clients at my shop who contribute now.

Q: So, you need help when you drive over to the Food Pantry?

Mrs. Zannella: It’s amazing.

People just come out of the Food Pantry and carry in this stuff. There’s a bunch of people that help. I drive up my car and open the trunk and everybody comes out and takes in the bags.

Q: So, you have another year of high school. Is this something you are going to continue or is this something that ends when you graduate?

Anthony: Next year, definitely.

Q: So, after next year, it all depends on whether you commute to college or live on campus?

Anthony: Yes. Mr. Zannella: It depends on where he goes to college and if he decides to live there.

Q: Now, what kind of feedback have you gotten from the community or from the people at the Food Pantry?

Anthony: People usually leave little “Thank you”notes or send the letter back with something written on it. And they put it in the bag that they drop off at my house.

Mrs. Zannella: People put notes in the bag thanking him. And some people have put in gift cards from McDonalds. And, we have people asking if he’s going to do it again next year.

Q: Now, what have you gotten out of this as a person?

Anthony: It feels good to do a good thing and help out others.

Q: So are you involved with other projects?

Anthony: No. This is my only one.

Q: Do you have similar projects at school?

Anthony: Yea. If they have a food drive, I’ll help out with that too.

Mr. Zannella: It’s tough for him to work on other projects while playing sports and three hours of homework a night. It’s really hard for him to get involved in a lot of things.

Q: So, this project takes some time. Doesn’t it?

Anthony: Yes. Q: So, when do you start the project?

Anthony: I’ll write the letter a week or two before the food drive. And I’ll put the letters in the mail boxes a week before Thanksgiving.

Q: So, you must be pretty proud of your son?

Mrs. Zannella: Yes. It’s amazing. It’s a lot of work.

Q: And what was you reaction when Anthony began this project seven years ago?

Mrs. Zannella: We were amazed. My husband had lost his job. We were so thankful, we had family all around. We knew we’d be okay. But there’s some

people who wouldn’t be. And, Anthony was thinking about them. That made us very proud.

Mr. Zannella: You don’t realize that children are always listening when families are talking about things and how to get by. Anthony started this when a lot of people were losing their jobs left and right and were ought of work for extended periods of time. And we were talking about “What do we do?” and “How are we going to get through this?” As a result of those conversations and not thinking he was listening,that’s how he came out (with the food drive). It was his idea.

Mrs. Zannella: So, when he was younger, we used to help him write it (the letter) and we would get it photo copied and we’d walk with him up and down the street. Now, it’s all on him.

Q: So, this is something you were doing when you were nine years old?

Anthony: Yes. Q: Well, it’s admirable, because it’s not a typical response by a kid. If every kid responded like you did, it would be a much better world.

Mrs. Zannella: Right.

Q: It’s remarkable the way things happened. “Well, Daddy has lost his job.” And, next thing you know, Anthony decides it would be a good thing to help people who are less fortunate.

So, he starts a Thanksgiving Day food drive. That’s not your typical response from a kid.

Mrs. Zannella: You’re right.

Q: So, are you a pretty spiritual person?

Anthony: A little bit.

Q: Was there any role model or somebody who influenced you to do this altruistic act?

Anthony: I don’t think so.

Mrs. Zannella: Nope. No. He’s doing okay with it.

ince their nonprofit status in May of 2017, the Sober Shuttle, Inc., which is located at 535 Ferry St. in Everett, has traveled over 10,000 miles throughout Massachusetts in support of those wishing to recover from substance abuse. No matter if the call comes from as far as Spectrum in Westborough, the Washburn House in Worcester or STARR in Fall River, or as close as CHA Everett, the Meridian House in East Boston or Baldpate in Georgetown, the volunteers of the Sober Shuttle remain gassed up and willing to travel to areas of the Cape right thru to the New Hampshire and Rhode Island borders. As of November 2018, the Sober Shuttle has answered over 700 calls – assisting with general questions, treatment program placement, clothing assistance and cost-free transportation.

The Sober Shuttle is proud to continue to partner with the Probation Departments and Drug Courts of Malden, Woburn, Lynn and Chelsea, as well as providing service to the Middlesex Sheriff ’s Department and the Suffolk County House of Correction.

Additional acknowledgement of success has been received

from local organizations, such as the Everett Kiwanis and the Everett Chamber of Commerce, a partnership with the 2017 Everett Roadmap to Recover Outreach Program, and a Document of Support and Need from Baldpate in Georgetown, Malden Probation and the Everett Fire Department. The Sober Shuttle is also appreciative for the local support from Tamer Megid, owner of the Ferry Street Garage at 464 Ferry St. in Everett, and Vladimer Sanon, owner of VSM Services at 539 Ferry St. in Everett.

The Sober Shuttle not only advocates for individuals, families, businesses and communities in recovery, but also supports our Mental Health community by cosponsoring along with Sabatino Insurance an annual Mental Health Holiday Party. Rocco Longo and his workers at Sabatino Insurance have been steadfast in their effort to support Sober Shuttle events and activities since the Shuttle’s nonprofit status in May 2017.

Bread of Life receives $15,000 grant from Joy in Childhood Foundation in celebration of Giving Tuesday

Funding will support programs that serve children battling hunger in local communities

T

he Bread of Life announced this week that it has received a $15,000 grant from the Joy in Childhood Foundation, which is powered by Dunkin’ and Baskin-Robbins, and brings the simple joys of childhood to kids battling hunger or illness.

Funding from the grant will support Bread of Life’s Motel Meals Outreach that delivers meals and groceries to homeless families sheltered in motels, as well as its food pantries that provide groceries for families with children. These programs provide much-needed fresh fruits & vegetables, protein, dairy products, breads and grains to children who are nutritionally atrisk due to homelessness and poverty. Bread of Life supports programs that help children in Malden, Everett, Melrose, Medford, Saugus, Stoneham, Reading, North Reading, Wakefield and Winchester.

“We’re so grateful for the grant we’re receiving from the Joy in Childhood Foundation,” said Bread of Life Executive Director Gabriella Snyder Stelmack. “Their support will help ensure that children will continue to receive services such as our Motel Meals Outreach and

groceries from our food pantries that make a positive impact in their daily lives, health and ability to learn and succeed in school.”

Bread of Life is one of 150 organizations receiving a grant from the Joy in Childhood Foundation. In total, the Joy in Childhood Foundation is

awarding $2 million to organizations nationwide in celebration of Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to global giving.

“We’re so excited to celebrate Giving Tuesday with nonprofit organizations like Bread of Life that share our commitment to bring joy to children in our local communities who are bat-

tling hunger or illness,” said Joy in Childhood Foundation CoChair Karen Raskopf. “We know how critical the services provided by Bread of Life are to kids in Malden and surrounding communities north of Boston, which is why we’re so proud to support their work.”

he Saugus United Parish Food Pantry was happy to be able to distribute 92 Thanksgiving packages that included a turkey, fresh produce and groceries to make a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Peabody shuts down Sachems in annual Turkey Day clash

I

n what was being billed as the most competitive matchup between Peabody and Saugus in several years, last Thursday’s annual Thanksgiving Day battle turned out to be a lot more one-sided than anticipated.

Leading 10-0 at halftime, Peabody would add 28 more points on its way to an eventual 38-6 rout in the unseasonably frigid cold at Veterans Memorial Stadium, where the windchill factor had temperatures hovering in the single digits.

Saugus managed to tally on its last possession to avoid the shutout. Prior to that, the Sachems had been held to just 40 total yards – never making it into Peabody territory – and were shut down offensively, suffering several three-andouts in the process. The victory gave the Tanners a 5-6 finish

for 2018 while Saugus concluded its season at 4-7.

Peabody head coach Mark Bettencourt said it was a com-

plete team effort from his squad. “I’m proud of the way the defense stood up today,” he told the press after the game. “I have to give our [offensive] line credit [as well]. We have four seniors up there, and they all played a great game.”

On the other side, the mood was not as bright. “I’m not happy about today,” a disappointed Saugus head coach Mike Mabee told the press. “Peabody manhandled us. They really took it to us. I thought we played OK early in the game.

But after they got up on us, we didn’t play very well.”

Peabody’s sophomore quarterback Alex DeNisco, who was filling in for injured Matt Jandrisevits, connected on 14 of 17 passes and threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He was

intercepted once – one of the very few highlights for Saugus.

Jared Ridley caught a TD pass of 31 yards in the second quarter. That score was followed by a two-point conversion run by Luis Guridys that made it 8-0 Tanners. A safety later gave Peabody its 10-0 lead at the half. A 38-yard scoring strike from DeNisco to Brandon Caniff then gave the hosts an 18-0 advantage following the twopoint conversion. The Tanners tacked on more with a threeyard Colby Therrien TD run for a 24-0 lead.

The onslaught continued when Kyle Maglione scored on a punt return, and Jake Sousa, who was returning from an injury, later accounted for the final Peabody points with a oneyard scoring rush. Kicker Austin

The lone shining moment for the visitors came on the game’s very last play, when Trini Altschul collected a pass from QB Mason Nickolas and raced 76 yards for the Sachems’ only points. All told, Saugus totaled 116 yards of offense (76 of those on the final play).

Nickolas hit on seven passes for 81 yards, Dante McGrane had a 39-yard run and Christian Correia gained 15 on another carry.

The Tanners managed 73 yards on the ground, led by Colten Cole and Angel Paulino combining for 54. With the win, Peabody has won the last five Thanksgiving Day games and owns a 45-28 lead in the series, which was in its 73rd season.

Zolak, the former New England Patriots quarterback who now works as the popular color analyst on Patriots radio broadcasts, will be in town to promote his new book, If These Walls Could Talk: New England Patriots. INCREASE PROPERTY TAX REDUCTION FOR VETERAN VOLUNTEERS (S 2454) Senate 37-0, approved an amendment to a current law that allows veterans to do volunteer work in their city or town and get up to a $1,000 property tax reduction in exchange. Local cities and towns are not required to offer the volunteer program and the decision whether to opt in is up to each individual city or town.

The amendment would raise the limit of the allowable property tax reductions to 175 hours at the current minimum wage of $11 per hour. That would make the new ceiling $1,925.

Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about health savings accounts? I’ve been reading that they are a great investment that can help with growing health care costs when I retire.

Planning Ahead Dear Planning, It’s true! A health savings account is a fantastic financial tool that can help you build up a tax-free stash of money for medical expenses now and after you retire – but there’s a catch. To get one, you must have a high-deductible health insurance policy.

How They Work Health savings accounts (or HSAs) have become increasingly popular over the past few years as health care costs continue to skyrocket, and because more and more Americans have gotten high-deductible health plans.

The benefit of a HSA is the triple tax advantage that it offers: Your HSA contributions can be deducted pretax from your paycheck, lowering your taxable income; the money in the account grows tax-free; and if you use the money for eligible medical expenses, withdrawals are tax-free.

And if you change jobs, the HSA moves with you.

To qualify, you must have a health insurance policy with a deductible of at least $1,350 for an individual or $2,700 for a family.

This year (2018), you can contribute up to $3,450 if you have single health insurance coverage, or up to $6,900 for family coverage. Next year (2019) you can contribute slightly more – up to $3,500 for single coverage or up to $7,000 for family coverage. And people age 55 and older can put away an extra $1,000 each year. But you cannot make contributions after you sign up for Medicare.

The money can be used for out-of-pocket medical expenses, including deductibles, co-payments, Medicare premiums, prescription drugs, vision and dental care and other expenses (see IRS.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf, page 5, for a complete list) either now or when you retire for yourself and your spouse as well as your tax dependents.

And unlike a flexible spending account, an HSA doesn’t require you to use the money by the end of the year. Rather, HSA funds roll over year to year and continue to grow tax-free in your HSA account for later use. In fact, you’ll get a bigger tax benefit if you use other cash for current medical expenses and keep the HSA money growing for the long term. Be sure to hold on to your receipts for medical expenses after you open your HSA, even if you pay those bills with cash, so you can claim the expenses later. There’s no time limit for withdrawing the money tax-free for eligible medical expenses you incurred anytime after you opened the account.

But be aware that if you do use your HSA funds for non-medical expenses, you’ll be required to pay taxes on the withdrawal, plus a 20 percent penalty. The penalty, however, is waived for those 65 and older, but you’ll still pay ordinary income tax on withdraws not used for eligible expenses.

How to Open a HSA You should first check with your employer to see if they offer a HSA, and if they will contribute to it. If not, you can open an HSA through many banks, brokerage firms and other financial institutions, as long as you have a qualified high-deductible health insurance policy.

If you plan to keep the money growing for the future, look for an HSA administrator that offers a portfolio of mutual funds for long-term investing and has low fees. HealthEquity, OptumBank, The HSA Authority and Bank of America are the top ranked HSA providers for long-term investing according to the investment research firm Morningstar. To search for providers, visit HSAsearch.com.

After setting up your HSA plan, adding money is pretty straightforward. Most plans let you do online transfers from your bank, send checks directly, or set up a payroll deduction if offered by your employer. And to access your HSA funds many plans provide a debit card, some offer a checkbook and most allow for reimbursement.

Mayor, City Council to apply $12.5 million Wynn payment to reduce tax rate The City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor Carlo DeMaria on Monday, November 13 to apply the entirety of Wynn Boston Harbor’s $12.5 million payment to the City of Everett toward reducing next year’s tax rate. The mayor made a similar move last year, when he successfully applied the entirety of a $5 million payment from Wynn toward the tax rate.

City Council adopts FY 18 tax rate The City Council unanimously voted to adopt a split levy rate on Monday, November 27, shifting the burden from residential to Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) at the highest shift of 175 percent.

The FY 18 tax rate will be $13.78 per $1,000 of valuation on residential properties and $33.74 per $1,000 of valuation on CIP properties. If the council hadn’t approved the shift, the flat rate for residential property and CIP would have been $19.28 per $1,000.

The shift will not prevent homeowners from seeing a small increase in their actual taxes, as home values have skyrocketed in the city over the last year.

On average, single-family home values rose by about $39,000 since the last fiscal year, while two-family and three-family residences on average rose $50,000.
