was in his living room when, he said, approximately five cruisers pulled up in front of his house. “They had flashlights, so I knew that they were looking for someone,” Powell said.

Powell said it absolutely scares him since incidents like this don’t really happen around that neighborhood.

“That’s the last thing you want – someone to rob you at night with very few witnesses around to help,” Powell said.

“It’s unbelievable – not good at all.”

His wife, Maria, rides the Blue Line daily.

Beachmont Liquors owner Mike Gerson said he heard approximately a dozen sirens, ranging from Revere, Boston, Winthrop and State Police. Gerson said it caused quite the stir.

“A lot of concerned customers have been asking me what the police presence is,” said Gerson, whose store is only 500 foot from where the robbery allegedly happened.

Gerson said the area is typically a family neighborhood that isn’t used to this type of disturbance. “It’s pretty quiet with a lot of diversity,” Gerson said.

Customer Diane Baron said she hadn’t heard about the robbery, adding that it’s not typical in this area. “It’s a tough time,” said Baron, who added it’s scary. “People are hungry for money around the holidays … or for drug money.”

Baron believes there should be stricter gun laws to avoid robberies at gunpoint.

A robbery was reported Monday night along Endicott Avenue with individuals resembling that same description, but O’Hara neither confirmed nor denied the sighting since the matter remains an open investigation.

Firefighters receive Governor’s group citation for meritorious conduct fices they make as their loved ones serve to protect their community.

By Tara Vocino our firefighters were recognized in a large-scale Governor and Department of Fire Services ceremony with approximately 90 others at Mechanics Hall in Worcester for helping to save a man’s life in a fire inside Lee’s Trailer Park in May. “It was something I’ll never forget and surreal, to say the least,” Firefighter Patrick Roosa said, who found the man unconscious at approximately 11 p.m. the second time around by feeling around.

According to Jennifer Mieth, spokesperson for the State Fire Marshal, Revere firefighters responded to multiple calls for a mobile home fire on Revere Beach Parkway on May 29 in the evening. However, crews at the station closest to the fire were at Revere Beach on a water rescue. Deputy Chief Anthony Giampietro, who was the first to get there, saw smoke and fire showing from an 8-by-25-foot unit in the back of the building, and residents told him that the man was still inside, according to Mieth.

Giampietro forced entry into the house and saw heavy fire and smoke. When Ladder 2 arrived, they, too, started searching for the victim with zero visibility and without the protection of a charged hose line.

heavy fire using just a two-gallon water extinguisher, forcible entry, and overhauling tools as Giampietro broke windows, cross venting the trailer to alleviate the smoke and heat that firefighters were dealing with.

The 60-year-old man was rescued, barely breathing, unconscious, and taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. After a long recovery, the man is doing much better and stopped by the station earlier this month to say thank you, according to Mieth.

All of the departments lined up single file, and Revere was the first city to be recognized.

Roosa, who hadn’t performed a rescue like this in his fouryear career, said the man suffered severe smoke inhalation, which can take months to recover from.

Fire Chief Chris Bright explained on Tuesday morning how his department was chosen to be a part of the ceremony. Bright said that he submitted the paperwork for his firefighters who performed the rescue at Lee’s Trailer Park to the committee at the Department of Fire Services tasked with reviewing submittals and selecting which awards are to be granted each year for the Firefighter of the Year Awards Ceremony. He then drove to the Massachusetts Fire Academy in Stow to make a presentation to the committee.

“I was very proud when we

were selected, and it was great to attend the ceremony,” Bright said. “It brings great pride to our firefighters and the city of Revere.”

Firefighter Bill Petrilli explained the conditions when he arrived. Petrilli said the trailer was full of smoke, and they had to break through windows and crawl through spaces to find the victim. He added that they had on their breathing apparatus and full gear. Petrilli added he hasn’t done a rescue like this in his 32-year career.

“It reflects well on our department,” Petrilli said. “They were about 20 of us on that night, so it could have been any of us.”

Petrilli said he was nervous during the ceremony, because he didn’t want to look bad in front of dignitaries.

During the ceremony, Gov. Charles Baker (R-Swampscott) said he is incredibly proud to honor those courageous firefighters for their bravery and service to their community in times of danger. Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito (R-Shrewsbury) thanked the families for the daily sacri-

Her mother, Marie, said she is her sweetheart and her oldest daughter. “I love her very much,” Marie Pyrrhus said. “She works very hard, and she is worried about her homework.”

She added that she attributes her daughter’s talent to her Christian faith and close familial bond, adding that she helps her with the smallest of tasks.

Her sister, Shayhara, 4, said she’s proud of her, adding that she wants to be like her when she grows up.

Tran, whose family wasn’t present, said in the lobby that she was surprised that she was chosen, but that meant her hard work was worth it.

School Committee Member Stacey Rizzo asked if it was student-initiated. Sheppard replied it was a mixture of staff and student participation.

Student Layla Guarino, who wasn’t present, said she wasn’t interested in writing letters to politicians, because she didn’t think politicians would lis-

ten to “just kids.� Rizzo replied that, hopefully, students who thought that their voice didn’t matter will now change their opinion as a result of this presentation.

After the presentation, Principal Steve Pechinsky said this project exemplifies what they want to promote. “That is making learning applicable to daily life,� Pechinsky said. “What students learn in the classroom goes into action.�

with the fourth phase being 50 percent of each. The site itself will be 161 acres, according to O’Brien. Phase 1 is slated to be completed by 2021, and the site is anticipated to be built by 2038.

Councillor-at-Large Dan Rizzo was the only dissenting vote. City Clerk Ashley Melnik said Tuesday afternoon that a two-thirds vote is required for passage of zoning matters and special permits. Eight councillors have to vote in the affirmative for the special permit to pass, according to Melnik.

Rizzo explained why he voted against the project after the meeting. “I would have preferred to see the project voted on a phase-by-phase basis,” Rizzo said after the meeting. “The organizers [HYM] are well respected, and rightfully so, but nothing says they’ll still be here in 20 years.”

Rizzo was quick to note that the project will be beautiful, but he believes that it’s not in the best interests of the city.

He added the city is already overrun with upcoming apartments, and he thinks that Revere doesn’t need an additional 3,000 apartments built for this project.

O’Brien replied that a large percentage of apartments (approximately 7,000) will be

built on the secondary Boston project location, adding that he and his team have been direct and honest from the outset. “Everything is in writing in front of you, including a 39page document on legal fees,” O’Brien said to Rizzo. “We have aspirations to take the site and make it into something special.

After the vote was passed, O’Brien reacted to Rizzo’s vote.

He said at the end of the day, the majority rules, and that the project passed with an overwhelming vote with only one opposition. “Tonight is a great milestone,” O’Brien said of the results. “I am very pleased that the vast majority approved the project to move forward with the design.”

O’Brien said it will take approximately 10 months to do the drawings before any construction can be done. He added that the project will cost billions of dollars, but it will generate approximately $43 million in Revere gross tax revenue annually.

Also, in a separate interview, Revere’s Director of Economic Development, Bob O’Brien, said the project’s passage is a major step forward for the benefit of community development. “It was a lengthy, systematic process,” Bob O’Brien said. “Tonight is our most significant vote thus far, and we had an overwhelming positive vote.”

In response to Rizzo’s concern, Bob O’Brien said they made it clear that there would be that many apartments from the beginning. “Our residential development was consistent from the beginning,” Bob O’Brien said. “We made it clear that apartments have to be part of mixed-use de-

velopment, including hotels and retail.”

During the meeting, Councillor-at-Large George Rotondo, who ultimately voted for the project, was concerned about the term “mitigation,” adding that it should be called “conditions.” “It’s an appealing project, but when every developer builds fences, houses or cement sidewalks, it’s called ‘conditions,’” Rotondo said. “It’s a big problem.”

Tom O’Brien replied to Rotondo that it’s just terminology and that a strong brand, highend hotel along with restaurants, small shops, apartments and landscape will build community for Revere.

Proposed fiscal 2019 tax rate set In other news, the proposed Fiscal 2019 residential tax rate was set Monday at $12.11 per thousand dollars, and for commercial properties, it was set at a proposed $23.68 per thousand dollars, according to Board of Assessors Chairman Dana Brangiforte. Brangiforte said the residential tax rate was $12.96, and the commercial tax rate was $25.36 in Fiscal 2018.

He said that although the tax rate decreased, the assessed values increased an average of 10 percent for a single-family home, or $130 tax dollars; and for a two-family, 14.5 percent, or an increase of $350. Apartments’ assessed value would increase by 20 percent, according to Brangiforte.

He said HYM will increase the commercial and residential tax base, but that is in the preliminary stages since the project was just approved at the City Council meeting end that night.

Revere Holds Winthrop for Third Straight Thanksgiving Victory

By Steve Freker REVERE— It would have been hard for longtime Revere High head coach Lou Cicatelli to deny that this year's turkey dinner was the tastiest of all, in his 16 years at the helm of the Patriots' football program.

After all, on a day steeped in tradition and history, Revere's hard-fought, 18-6 victory over holiday archrival Winthrop at frosty Della Russo Stadium was the cherry on top of one of the most successful seasons ever for the Patriots.

At game time, the temperature was a "balmy" 16 degrees, with a swirling wind chill of straight up 1 degree.

The win closed out Revere's year at 7-4 overall, its best record since 1981, a team Cicatelli played for under the legendary late Patriot head coach Silvio Cella.

Adding to this, for the first time in over 40 years, Revere's Thanksgiving win was the third in a row over the Winthrop Vikings, a feat not accomplished since Cella's 1974 won its third straight Turkey Day game.

"It's three in a row and it felt great," Coach Cicatelli said of the historic "W". "These kids have worked so hard and battled through so much this year, they deserved a great finish like this."

For the year, Winthrop lost its chance for a winning record for the season, finishing at 6-5.

With the win, Revere made another chip in the large lead Winthrop holds in the overall series, which began in 1913.

Game #88's result leaves the overall tally at 55-29-3 in Winthrop's favor. Since the last time Revere won three in a row, in 1974, the Patriots have won on Thanksgiving four times before the latest streak, Viking dominance for over four decades.

On Thanksgiving Day, despite what some viewed as a mismatch going in, it was far from it. As Coach Cicatelli had predicted last week, it was a battle.

Revere had to play catchup in the first half when Winthrop intercepted a Jonathan Murphy pass on a third-andlong heave and scored quickly after Austin Daigneault returned the pick to the Patriots 21-yard line.

Daigneault himself scored on a four-yard run four plays later as the second quarter began, for a 6-0 Winthrop lead and the conversion run failed as the Vikings had drawn first blood.

Revere tied the game late in the second quarter on the legs of star running back Darius McNeil. McNeil busted off a 30-yard run to the Winthrop 5-yard line with 2:33 left in the half and then scored on the next play for a 6-6 deadlock.

dium. Murphy did eke out a TD pass however, when he hit Cal Capozzi with an 11-yard scoring strike to put Revere up 12-6, the eventual game winning points, with 1:44 left in the third quarter in this defensive battle.

McNeil carried the next Revere scoring drive, opening the fourth quarter. Devin Matthias recorded a huge fourth down sack, as the Vikings went for it on 4th-and-5 from their own 47-yard line.

Five McNeil runs on six plays was capped by a 1-yard touchdown dive to give the Patriots a commanding, 18-6 lead after the conversion run was stuffed by the Vikings.

McNeil finished the game with a game-high 139 yards on 28 carries and the two TDs. Still, as expected, Winthrop did not relent. The Vikings

launched two more drives deep into Revere territory, but could not solve the Red Zone and dent the scoreboard.

All-Conference linebacker Zach Furlong picked off the last Winthrop pass of the day in the end zone to end any

threat and essentially seal the Revere victory. Frank Sims and Zach Carifeo also led the Patriots' defense.

"We are proud of our seniors and our team," Coach Cicatelli said. "It was exactly how we wanted to finish our season."

Human remains found along marsh

By Tara Vocino he Suffolk County District Attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office confirmed that bones found Friday morning along the Rumney Marsh are believed to be, or likely, human remains, which has concerned area residents.

Acco rd i n g to S u f fo l k County District Attorney Press Secretary Jake Wark, troopers assigned to the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit, with additional State Police assets and Revere Police detectives, are investigating the discovery of apparent human remains in Rumney Marsh. The remains were spotted behind a North View Terrace house by hunters on Friday morning and appear to be human bones.

The bones were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which will attempt to determine the cause and manner of the personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death as investigators undertake identification efforts.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Wark said the Medical Examiner hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t made a determination as to the cause of death or who this person was, adding that additional examination will reveal age, gender and how long the bones had been at that location â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all a few steps away.

Wark explained where and how the bones were discovered. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The remains were in the marsh, not on any personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s property,â&#x20AC;? Wark said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My understanding is that they were visible when the hunters happened upon them and were not buried when they were first seen.â&#x20AC;?

Wark went on to say heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not sure of the timeline. He added it may be something

investigators can easily ascertain just by looking at them, or it may take some form of testing.

Broadcast media outlets reported that there were additional bones found Monday, but Wark explained that it was just a standard investigative step, and that they were the same bones found on Friday morning that investigators were researching. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While there are no significant developments at this time, specialized State Police units did return to Rumney Marsh on Monday to continue a search of the discovery site,â&#x20AC;? Wark said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a standard investigative step under the circumstances, and notable only because the bones were found in an area that becomes flooded at high tide â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as a result, the search effort is periodically interrupted for hours at a time, and is therefore taking longer than it would on dry land.

While the remains are likely human, no identification or other conclusions have yet been drawn.â&#x20AC;?

The discovery saddened residents who live in the area. Resident Jan Dumas said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;How sad, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure someone is looking for a loved one."

Resident Nick Moulaison, Sr. said itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disturbing, adding that no one has been reported missing that he knows of. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It bothers me because that person is someoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s loved one,â&#x20AC;? Moulaison said. My thoughts and prayers go out to that person and the family. May they rest in peace.â&#x20AC;?
