McGonagle heavy favorite for State Rep. Tuesday, September 4 By The Advocate t’s hard to expect turnout will be great for a midterm primary the day after Labor Day, but Everett and Middlesex County voters will be keeping a close eye on several energetic and high-profile races. Incumbent Representative Joseph McGonagle has run on his record and experience, frequently referencing on the campaign trail the funds he has brought to the city through earmarks and his close relationship with leadership in the House. Gerly Adrien, a community organizer and grants and finance manager at Boston Medical Center, is running a progressive, grassroots campaign, calling for greater transparency and closer ties between the rep’s office and the community. Stat Smith, who held the 28th Middlesex seat until 2013 when he was forced to resign after pleading guilty to an absentee ballot voter fraud scheme, is running on his constituent services record. Because there is no Republican running for the seat, whoever wins Tuesday’s primary will have effectively won the election.
