McGonagle heavy favorite for State Rep. Tuesday, September 4

By The Advocate t’s hard to expect turnout will be great for a midterm primary the day after Labor Day, but Everett and Middlesex County voters will be keeping a close eye on several energetic and high-profile races.

Incumbent Representative Joseph McGonagle has run on his record and experience, frequently referencing on the campaign trail the funds he has brought to the city through earmarks and his close relationship with leadership in the House. Gerly Adrien, a community organizer and grants and finance manager at Boston Medical Center, is running a progressive, grassroots campaign, calling for greater transparency and closer ties between the rep’s office and the community. Stat Smith, who held the 28th Middlesex seat until 2013 when he was forced to resign after pleading guilty to an absentee ballot voter fraud scheme, is running on his constituent services record.

Because there is no Republican running for the seat, whoever wins Tuesday’s primary will have effectively won the election.

SOUNDS OF EVERET T No remorse Obviously, Stat Smith has no remorse to the people of Everett after he stole two Rep. elections with an absentee ballot scheme in which he obtained absentee ballots for ineligible voters and cast ballots for voters without them knowing it. What a disgrace! In Federal Court Stat Smith pled guilty and went to prison for four months and was banned from running for office for five years. Now, he wants the Rep. seat again. Smith’s apology to the voters and politicians never came. How could anyone vote for Smith, who is arrogant and dishonest?

Let’s show him the highway on Election Day, Sept. 4. Please vote. Rep. McGonagle is the right choice.

Smith & Matewsky Do you remember when the late Rep. Ed Connolly passed away and Wayne Matewsky ran against Smith for the Reps. seat? During the race Matewsky was allegedly verbally threatened by Smith, and Matewsky was telling anyone who would listen that he was going to take out a criminal complaint in Malden District Court because Matewsky felt uneasy about Smith’s threats. Now it seems Matewsky is Smith’s bosom buddy and current campaign manager – managing the absentee ballots roundup.

Matewsky works his day job at Smith’s rooming houses.

Smith fled the scene And do you remember that terrible incident when Smith collided with a Chelsea Police cruiser with his van on Revere Beach Parkway? The two cops were seriously injured when one of the officers was thrown from the vehicle onto the pavement of The Parkway, and the other officer was trapped in the cruiser. While motorists stopped to help the two police officers, Smith fled the scene and hid for five days and ultimately turned himself in to the Chelsea police. What a guy! What a coward!

More victims?

How is it possible that a man who deprived us of our constitutional rights by stealing elections and leaving his opponents or victims and the voting citizens with the aftermath of his deceitful tactics of voter fraud? Every candidate has the opportunity to a fair election, which he deprived opponents of; just ask Frank Nuzzo and John Hanlon, who may have been victims of his evil deed. It is very possible that Nuzzo could have been the first victim of Smith, and could very possibly be the State Representative today if he wasn’t possibly cheated out of an election by absentee ballot fraud. No one will ever know except Smith!

Revere “bags” landlord Smith The headline in the paper read, “Revere Takes Out Criminal Complaint Against Everett Rep. Smith” for converting two adjoining apartment buildings on Yeaman St., Revere, to 12 apartments without permits. The 12 apartments also had serious code violations. Smith is all about greed. The judge ordered Smith to reconstruct the adjoining buildings to the original 6 families.

ANONYMOUS means a lot about the person that wrote this letter.

First, the writer does not have a name, so it suggests to me that everything said is either a lie or is wrong. I am in a country where human rights are respected, so if I denounce a person I should do it aloud and in my name because I am â&#x20AC;&#x153;supposedâ&#x20AC;? to say the truth.

Secondly, this person denounces a man whom I have come to respect and who represents me as an elected official. This writer doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t present any proof of what he is saying. Mr. Joe McGonagle makes my voice heard as a citizen and I am grateful for it because thanks to him I exist politically and my opinion counts.

Third: This person spits his venom on him by mixing with his private life because he has found nothing else to say about him from the political point of view. This person knows Joe is doing his job well but our anonymous person does not dare to admit it. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure of it and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m telling you here, yes you the anonymous person.

Fourth: We are a few days away from the vote of September 4th and this anonymous person thinks that his anonymous letter will influence people to change their vote. I want to tell him that this is not the

right way to influence people because they are not idiots. Who believes an anonymous person?

Fifth: My message to this anonymous person â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this is not the way to destroy the notoriety of a political person. EVIDENCE is needed and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needed about his job.

Sixth: To change people on board and put them in your camp, it will take ACTS that show YOU do everything to help them feel like CITIZENS and to be RESPONSIBLE for their future in a positive way and the future wellbeing of that country which is OUR. Seventh: In view of your behavior by this anonymous letter, I am certain and I am sure that many will think like me and DO NOT TRUST YOU because you wade in the ma-

nure and not in the reality in which everyone lives. I cannot believe you are doing this to effect my future and that of my children. As long as you play anonymously I do not know you and I DO NOT WANT TO KNOW YOU, because as a citizen I only know transparency and in this transparency, Mr. Joe McGonagle is present for me and for all those who want to live in a democracy.

Thanks to the author of this anonymous letter, I am denouncing your behavior as the vilest, lowest and the unhealthiest I ever seen.

Fourth Annual Village Fest set for September 15 Sugar Ray to headline street festival ayor Carlo DeMaria is happy to announce that the City of Everett is partnering with Encore Boston Harbor, Craft Brewers Guild and Suffolk Construction for the Fourth Annual Village Fest, a citywide celebration that will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, September 15. This will take place in the Village Business District along Santilli Highway.

Mayor DeMaria stated, “I want to personally thank our friends from Encore, the Craft Brewers Guild and Suffolk Construction for their significant financial commitments to Village Fest this year. Without their donations we would not be able to bring in world-renowned band Sugar Ray to our great City. This year’s show will be fantastic.”

The past three editions of Village Fest have been a great success, with huge turnouts from residents of Everett and several surrounding communities. This year, the City of Everett expects to welcome even greater numbers. Accordingly, the festival will be enlarged to include more popular food trucks, more themed games and more locally crafted beer and spirits. There will also be a greater variety of information booths from local businesses and vendors. The sponsors have lined up an array of popular musical ensembles.

After much anticipation, Mayor DeMaria announced last week the headlining musical performance for the fourth Annual Village Fest: Sugar Ray. Sugar Ray is an American rock band from Newport Beach, Calif. Originally forming in 1986 and playing a heavier nu metal–style music, the band achieved mainstream popularity in 1997 with their more pop-influenced single, “Fly.” The song’s success led the band to shift its style dramatically to the more radio-friendly pop sound with their subsequent releases. City to hold flu clinic September 5 ayor Carlo DeMaria and the Everett Health Department will hold a flu clinic on Wednesday, September 5 at the Connolly Center (90 Chelsea St.) from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. This clinic is open to all Everett residents ages 65 and older. At this clinic only the High Dose Flu Vaccine will be administered. (The standard flu vaccines will be administered when available.)

No appointment is necessary. All attendees are required to bring their Health Insurance and/or Medicare cards. The seasonal vaccine this year includes protection against the seasonal and H1N1 vaccine strains.

City to participate in National Recovery Month ecovery Month is a national observance that aims to combat social stigma around addictions, celebrate recovery, and promote awareness.

Mayor Carlo DeMaria is proud to support this statewide light up purple campaign across the Commonwealth.
