Brown, a longtime member of the Saugus Historical Society, has been putting together the calendar for most of the years since 2002. The 2018 calendar that came out this week – straight from Park Press Printers in Saugus – has a special treat for local history buffs who love

old war stories.

Mostly old postcards The new calendar also features reproductions from 11 postcards – six of them contributed by the Saugus Historical Society and five from Brown’s personal collection. One of his postcards features an early 1900’s vintage photo of the Cliftondale School, which appears on the cover.

Brown used a unique piece from his collection to illustrate the month of April – an early 1900’s postcard showing the Old Stone Post Office Building, the current quarters of the Park Press Building, where the calendar was printed.

“I paid $45 for this particular postcard, which is very unusual,” Brown said. “It’s an uncommon postcard for its day. It’s uncommon because there are people in the photograph. Normally, a photographer would wait until they got out of the way and then take the picture for a postcard.”

Several of the postcards featured in the 2018 calendar – like the one of the Roby School, for the month of September – were printed in Germany and are distinguished by their curved corners, according to Brown.

First Congregational Church-UCC fire probe Prosecutors seek criminal charges against juvenile who “intentionally lit” fire nearby

A

n investigation by the state Fire Marshal’s Office has concluded that a juvenile “intentionally lit the fire” that threatened to destroy the First Congregational United Church of Christ earlier this month.

“Charges will be filed in Lynn District Court to hold the juvenile, a Saugus resident, responsible and request a referral to a juvenile firesetting intervention program,” according to a press release issued this week by the Department of Fire Services. Few details were available on how investigators reached a finding on the cause of the Dec. 8 two-alarm blaze at the historic church at 300 Central St. “The fire involved stacks of wooden and plastic pallets in an alleyway behind the building where the church stores seasonal materials. The exterior of the church suffered minor damage from radiant heat,” notes a brief press release issued by the Department of Fire Services.

“This area is a shared space between the church and the adjacent Masonic hall. People tend to use the alleyway as a cut through between Central and Hamilton Streets,” the press release continues.

The Fire Marshal’s finding confirmed earlier rumors that a child had started the fire that caused damage and cleanup costs estimated by Saugus Deputy Fire Chief Thomas D’Eon, Jr. to be as high as $300,000.

Quick action by firefighters saved the church A quick response by the Fire Department, aided by the availability of fire crews and apparatus at the main fire station – just a short distance away – was credited with keeping the church from burning down.

For starters, a passerby showed up at the Saugus Public Safety Building to initially report the fire, shaving precious minutes off the response time. Fire crews were already arriving at the scene when the Fire Department began to receive the first 911 calls. Fire officials also said the church’s double-paned windows prevented the fire from breaking through to the inside of the church and causing more serious damage.

Steve O’Connell, a spokesman for Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s Office, said he couldn’t comment on the case because his office hadn’t received any information yet. Prosecutors are also limited on information they can release about juvenile cases, according to O’Connell.

Meanwhile, the pastor of First Congregational Church UCC Saugus offered to provide support for the juvenile who was implicated in the blaze. “I saw on the news that there was a juvenile charged with setting the fire that damaged our church,” Rev. Leahy told The Saugus Advocate.

“If the charges prove to be true, I would want to meet this young person and their family. I would offer my compassion and my time as part of their support network as all of us – family, church, first responders and the Saugus community – try to heal from this traumatic event,” Leahy said.

pened in Saugus during 2017?

2) What do you see as the major issue facing the town in 2018?

3) What’s the single project you resolve to tackle in the new year?

Four of the five selectman responded to our questions via email. Selectman Mark Mitchell told us he was away on vacation with his son and unable to respond. Here are the responses provided by selectmen in alphabetical order: Selectman Scott Brazis

Q: What do you consider the most significant that happened

in Saugus during 2017?

A: Signing the Town Manager to a five-year contract. This will give the Town stability moving forward with all of the important projects coming to fruition in the coming years.

Q: What do you see as the major issue facing the town in 2018?

A: We need to work with our local State legislators (House and new Senator) to rejuvenate the Route 1 project, specifically the Lynnfield underpass and Route 1 corridor from Route 99 to Copeland Circle (in Revere) widened. This project was on the State’s radar at one time and seems to have become stagnant.

Q: What’s the single project you resolve to tackle in the new year?

A: Looking into seeing how the Town can retain more liquor licenses from the State. The Town has a lot of projects being developed with restaurants being part of the business plan.

Q: What do you consider the most significant event that happened in Saugus during 2017?

A: There were so many monumental events for our town in 2017. However, the two that stick out are the passing of the new High School and Middle School and athletic complex along with the district wide education plan; and our agreeing to terms with our town manager on a new contract that will provide Saugus much-needed stability to watch our success continue for years to come.

Q: What do you see as the major issue facing the town in 2018?

A: I want to see our town as a community continue to march forward to address the opioid

crisis head-on. Saugus can and will be a pioneer in finding creative ways to address this problem that is plaguing our town as well as every other neighboring community.

Q: What’s the single project you resolve to tackle in the new year?

A: The Town’s recent financial successes have been amazing.

From our increased stability reserves to our improved bond rating etc. It is important we continue to be conservative when budgeting and forecasting and always remain cognizant of the importance of financial stability reserves while remaining mindful of the importance in investing in public safety, capital infrastructure and the services we offer to our residents. I feel continuing to improve each of our parks and playgrounds and open space areas throughout Saugus would be a welcomed investment by our residents of all ages. I also feel we should begin the dialogue to explore, once again, the possibility of a west side fire station. The need is growing increasingly more significant given the economic development that is underway on Route 1.

A: I believe the Town of Saugus is very healthy right now, so I don’t foresee a major issue in 2018. We will all be vigilant to identify problems before they

Theatre Company of Saugus to host auditions for “Almost, Maine”

T

he Theatre Company of Saugus (TCS) is excited to announce auditions for our upcoming winter show, “Almost, Maine,” a comic drama by John Cariani. This show is one of the most often produced by community theatres and schools.

From the original New York Times review: “Nine interlocking love stories all happen in the same New England town on the same moonless night. The short, starry-eyed vignettes ... focus on making

literal the idioms of love. They alternate beautiful, evocative prose with stutteringly awkward exchanges and often very funny (if sometimes predictable) sight gags. There’s a literal falling-in-love bit that involves repeated, uncontrollable, weak-kneed crashes to the floor. There’s a heart-turnedto-stone bit, in which a repairman promises to mend a shattered heart clattering around in a sandwich bag. The rules of this world are systematical-

ly different from ours, but still somehow recognizable – almost as if they were mistranslated when converted into the Down East vernacular.”

Auditions for the TCS production of “Almost, Maine” are scheduled for Thursday, December 14 and Monday, December 18. Callback auditions will be on Tuesday, December 19. Each session will start at 7:00 p.m.

The director is Matt Garlin.

Performances are scheduled for the third and fourth week-

ends of February 2018, on February 16-17-18 and 23-2425. Rehearsals will be on Sunday afternoons and on Monday and Thursday evenings.

The first rehearsal will be on Thursday, December 21, 2017.

Rehearsals will continue after the New Year holiday. The location of auditions, rehearsals, and performances is the American Legion Post 210/44 Taylor St. in Saugus, Mass.

There are roles for nine women and 10 men. In most pro-

In June 2017, the townspeople supported two debt exclusions: one for a new Middle/ High school and one to renovate the Belmonte and Veteran’s schools. This is the largest investment our town has ever supported, so we need to make sure that these efforts stay on track. As Selectmen, we need

to monitor progress. We hope to break ground in fall 2018.

Q: What’s the single project you resolve to tackle in the new year?

A: I don’t think there is a single project that we need to resolve in 2018. However, I do believe that we need to sustain the forward progress that we are now experiencing. We see progress with strengthening our finances, with capital planning and improvements, with zoning initiatives (including economic development), with parks & playgrounds, with a new middle/ high school, and developing a vision for our future.

About 2,500 copies of the 2018 calendar were printed this week. The calendars are available to the public for free at Town Hall, the Saugus Public Library and the Saugus Senior Center. But donations from $2 to $5 are requested to help defray costs for the Saugus Historical Society.

Calendars could still be obtained this year late into the spring, probably because they came out late, according to Brown. “Any time the calendars are late, we get a bunch of calls,” he said.

It cost about $6,000 to print the 2018 calendars. With the calendar ready for public distribution before year’s end for the first time in several years, Brown predicted the calendars would be sold out by the end of January.

H

ere are a few tidbits that you might want to know about this week in Saugus.

A resolve to improve New Year is always a good time to embark on new self-improvement projects, whether it’s for health reasons or becoming better at one’s job. At The Saugus Advocate, we look forward to making the paper more interesting and relevant in the lives of our loyal readers.

Of course our mission is always to provide Saugus residents and others interested in the community a balanced report each week of interesting people, events and programs in the community. We always strive to provide an accessible forum to citizens who want to express their views.

It’s quite a challenge every week to research, report and write human interest and developing news stories that people want to read about. And while people demand more from our coverage of local government, it’s just part of what we do. There are great human interest stories and columns that can be written in a town like Saugus. And we’re always interesting in hearing from our readers.

Best wishes to you and your family for a Happy New Year.

Don’t ruin your New Year ’Tis the time of year when folks are in the celebration mode. They want to get together at a local restaurant with family or friends over drinks.

Alcohol and ice can be a very bad combination this time of year if a loved one or friend has had too much drink and gets behind the wheel of an automobile. The worst-case scenario, of course, is getting into an accident involving serious or even fatal injuries.

Of course, drinking and driving – if you get caught by the police – can turn into an expensive nightmare that can cost you your job, your reputation, your driving privileges and a boatload of money. I’m not preaching. I’m just sharing with our readers a situation I have firsthand knowledge of.

Somebody who doesn’t drink often goes out one night and has beers with a friend and splits a pizza. But he stays at the restaurant and bar late before he drives home. He’s not going very fast, but the police stop and are influenced by the lateness of the hour of a slow-moving car. There’s no accident. There’s no speeding violation.

But police pull the car over and do a field sobriety test. They then ask the driver to consent to a breathalyzer test. He refuses and his license automatically gets suspended for 180 days. An attorney later advises him he would have been better off taking the breathalyzer test.

A drunk driving arrest leads to a suspension from work without pay. His attorney advises him to seek a continuance of the case without a finding, which involves a 16-week alcohol education program that could last as long as 20 weeks. Between the program, the court costs, the legal costs, the fines involved and the increase in car insurance the costs could escalate over time. The guy loses his job despite a great work record over nearly two decades. The company challenges his unemployment benefits, and he won’t get any compensation until 18 weeks later after a successful appeal before a hearing officer. Meanwhile, he has to make a premature withdrawal from his retirement account. The court has decided he has to install a breathalyzer device on his car at the rate of $127 a month for about 30 months – six of the months for the period he was on a hardship license.

Of course, the price of car insurance doubles despite a once-perfect driving record. The high insurance will continue for four to six years. There are probation reports to write in-between job searches. The financial impact for a one-time offense escalates to a cumulative loss of $75,000 or more over a period of several years.

You get the picture. That certainly was an expensive night of pizza and beer. Wasn’t it?

If that’s the kind of scenario that scares the heck out of you, stay at home this New Year’s Eve instead of putting your freedom, your job, your future and maybe even your life – or somebody else’s life – in jeopardy. There are better, more productive and less expensive ways to welcome in the New Year.

abuski Holiday Classic was held in Saugus at the Kasabuski Arena and also featured Winthrop and Lynnfield. C.J. Graffeo scored the game-winner for the Sachems with 1:21 left in the

game. Adam Rodrigues and Lorenzo Keegan also scored for Saugus against Triton, which at one point held a 2-1 lead.

Students helping students Here’s an example of great collaboration between the Saugus Public Library and a Belmonte Middle School teacher – and, of course, Junior National Honor Society students from the Belmonte Middle School.

Each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m., the library provides tutoring and homework help for the town’s elementary school students. The elementary school students get help, the Belmonte students get credits for community service.

The library again will be partnering with the Belmonte Middle School to offer free, drop-in homework help in the Community Room to Saugus elementary school students to help foster strong academic and study skills outside of school hours. No registration is required, but students must be signed in/out by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must remain on library grounds while the student is receiving homework assistance pursuant to an unaccompanied minors policy. This program is open to students in grades K-5. The subjects students can get help with include math, science, grammar, reading, social studies, geography and more. Hey, parents, here’s some help if you child needs it.

Annual Food for Fines The Saugus Public Library wants to strike a deal with those readers who are procrastinating in paying their overdue fines. You can reduce the fines in return for donations of food that will be given to local food pantries. Don’t Eat This if You’re Taking That

Dear Savvy Senior, If the prescription label says “take with meals,” does it matter what you eat? I currently take eight different medications for various health problems and would like to know if there are any foods I need to avoid.

Over Medicated Dear Over, It depends on the medication. Many meds should be taken with food – any food – to increase their absorption and reduce the risk of side effects. But some foods and medications can interact, reducing the medications’ effectiveness or increasing the risk of harmful side effects.

To stay safe, you should always talk to your doctor or pharmacist to learn the ins and outs of your prescriptions, along with what foods and beverages to avoid while you’re on it.

In the meantime, here are some foods you should stay away from for some commonly prescribed drugs.

Cholesterol Medications: If you take a certain statin drug to control high cholesterol like Liptor, Zocor, Altoprev, Mevacor, or generics atorvastatin, simvastatin or lovastatin, you should avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Grapefruit can raise the level of the drug in your bloodstream and increase the risk of side effects, especially leg pain.

Blood Pressure Medicine: If you take an ACE inhibitor drug like Capoten, Vasotec, Monopril, Zestril and others to lower your blood pressure, you should limit food that contain potassium like bananas, oranges, tomatoes, spinach and other leafy greens, sweet potatoes, and salt substitutes that contain potassium. ACE inhibitors raise the body’s potassium levels. Eating too many potassium rich-foods while taking an ACE inhibitor can cause an irregular heartbeat and heart palpitations.

Blood Thinning Medications: If you are taking Coumadin, Jantoven, or the generic warfarin, you should limit kale and other greens, including broccoli, cabbage, spinach, and brussels sprouts that contain vitamin K. These foods can block the effects of these blood-thinning medications putting you at risk for developing blood clots. You also need to watch out for garlic, ginger, vitamin E and fish oil supplements because they can increase these medications bloodthinning abilities putting you at risk for excessive bleeding.

Antidepressants: If you take a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressant like Marplan, Nardil, Emsam, Parnate, or generic isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline or tranylcypromine, avoid aged cheeses, chocolate, cured meats and alcoholic drinks. These contain tyramine, which can raise blood pressure. Normally, the body controls tyramine levels with an enzyme called monoamine oxidase, but the MAOI antidepressant block that enzyme.

Thyroid Medications: If you take a medication for hypothyroidism like Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid or generic levothyroxine, you should avoid eating tofu and walnuts, and drinking soymilk. All these can prevent your body from absorbing this medicine.

Anti-Anxiety Medications: If you take medication for anxiety like Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, Ativan, or generic alprazolam, clonazepam, diazepam or lorazepam, you should avoid alcohol. These medications act as sedatives, binding with the brain’s natural tranquilizers to calm you down. But when you mix these drugs with alcohol, the side effects intensify, and can cause you to feel lightheaded, sleepy and forgetful.

Antibiotics: If you’re taking an antibiotic like Sumycin, Dynacin, Monodox, or generic tetracycline, doxycycline or minocycline, you should avoid dairy – milk, yogurt, and cheese, and calcium supplements and fortified foods – for a couple hours before and after taking the medicine. Calcium in dairy products binds to the antibiotic and prevents your body from absorbing it, making it ineffective.

Beacon Hill Roll Call

By Bob Katzen THE HOUSE AND SENATE:The Republicans in the Senate gained a seat when newly-elected GOP Sen. Dean Tran (R-Leominster) was sworn in last week. The Democrats now have a 33-7 edge. The Republicans’ control of seven seats is the highest in 18 years. Tran won the seat that opened up when former Democratic Sen. Jennifer Flanagan resigned to take a position on the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.

The 32-year-old Tran was born in Vietnam in 1975. According to his campaign website, he and his family fled the war-torn country and moved to the United States in 1980.

He was first elected to the Fitchburg City Council in 2006 and last week he became the first Vietnamese-American state senator in the state.

There were no roll calls in the House and Senate last week.

This week, Beacon Hill Roll Call reports on how often local senators voted with their party leadership in 2017.

Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session.

The Tax Cuts And Jobs Act Of 2017

n Friday, December 22, 2017, President Trump signed into law The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. It will take some time to fully digest the key provisions of this tax act but some of the key changes are listed below. Most of the provisions take effect after the first of the year.

• The corporate tax rate for C corporations is dropping from 35% to 21% • A new 20% deduction for pass-through entities such as limited liability companies (LLC’s) and Subchapter S corporations. These entities do not pay income taxes. The LLC members or the stockholders of the S Corporation pay income taxes by reporting his or her proportionate share of the entity’s net income on Form 1040 after having received a Schedule K-1 form.

• The estate tax still remains but the lifetime “gift tax” exemption and the exemption received upon death would double. An individual is now able to gift during his or her lifetime or bequeath and devise upon death an amount equal to approximately $11million, with a married couple now up to approximately $22million.

• State and local income taxes (SALT ) are now limited to $10,000 as an itemized deduction on Schedule A of Form 1040.

In high tax states such as New York, New Jersey, California and Massachusetts, many taxpayers will be losing significant tax deductions starting in calendar year 2018. The more affluent income earners will be feeling the pinch.

• For loans originating in calendar year 2018, mortgage interest for any loans over $750,000

will no longer be deductible with respect to a mortgage secured by your primary residence.

The home equity loan mortgage interest deduction will no longer be allowed in calendar year 2018.

• For divorces that are finalized after calendar year 2018, taxpayers will no longer be able to deduct Alimony as an AGI (adjusted gross income) deduction. That also means that the recipient of Alimony will not be required to report it as taxable income on his or her 2019 Form 1040.

• You will not be able to deduct any mortgage interest on a vacation home if your primary home mortgage amount is $750,000 or more. This applies to mortgages originated after January 1, 2018. If the balance of your primary home mortgage is only $600,000, then you would be able to borrow up to $150,000 to purchase a vacation home and still get to deduct all of the mortgage interest for both properties.

• There is no grandfather provision for home equity lines of credit. The deduction is simply eliminated.

• Personal exemptions are eliminated • The standard deduction for a single taxpayer and married taxpayers is doubled • No more itemized deductions for investment advisory fees and tax return preparation fees.

• No more moving expense deduction (except for military personnel) • Capital gains tax rates remain the same • The annual tax-free gift for calendar year 2018 is now up to $15,000 per donee • Meals and entertainment expenses are no longer deductible • There are seven tax brackets for individuals for calendar year 2018 with the highest bracket now at 37%, down from 39.6%

Beloved wife of John A. Curry of Saugus died peacefully at the Massachusetts General Hospital surrounded by her family. She is survived by her 2 sons, Robert Curry of Danvers, Timothy Curry & his wife Susan of Saugus, & her daughter Susan Brown of Saugus. Also survived by 6 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren. Born in Marblehead, Marcia graduated from Lynn English High School, class of 1954.

Upon graduation, she was employed at Mass General Hospital as an administrator in the welfare department. She was deeply involved in the social life of Northeastern University where her husband served as President. So much so, that when her husband retired the Board of Trustees voted to name the new student center in her name as well as his. Marcia was actively involved with the Cliftondale Congregational Church in Saugus serving as a member of the Board of Deacons & the Church’s social clubs. She enjoyed playing the organ and was proud to be one of Lynn’s first woman basketball players in the early 50’s.

Relatives & friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home, 549 Lincoln Ave., Saugus on Saturday, December 30 from 12 to 3 p.m. Burial at the request of the family is private.
