Thomas O’Brien, founding partner and managing director of HYM Investment Group, LLC, has been a major newsmaker in Revere this year after his group’s purchase of Suffolk Downs and subsequent plans to develop the 161-acre former horse racing track into a mixed-use residential, retail and commercial “neighborhood”, and potentially even a new home for Amazon’s East Coast office.

s the year almost comes to an end, it is customary to look back on what made the year extraordinary. From major developments to the passing of iconic leaders, it was a busy year for the community of Revere.

In May, The HYM Investment Group, LLC acquired the Suffolk Downs site and will be developing it with hopes to turn the land into a major mixeduse development. The site is 161 acres with 42 acres of the property in Revere and the rest in East Boston.

A flag that flew over Camp Lejeune in North Carolina (home of the US Marines), was sent by Brigadier General JD Alford to Bradley, along with a personalized letter of encouragement.

aryl Bradley, a US Marine who served in Beirut and Lebanon in 1983 had recently fallen on hard times, suffering from PTSD. His wife, Denise suffers from diabetes and heart disease and requires constant medical attention. Recently, the Bradley’s, facing mounting medical bills, were in danger of losing their home.

Former Revere Police Chief and US Marine Joseph Cafarelli, along with fellow marines, organized a fundraiser to help the Bradley’s. A “Go Fund Me” page was set up and phone calls were made to assist in their efforts. A surprise night at the Casa Lucia/Mottola VFW Post was set in motion to raise more funds.

Needless to say, it all came together and enough money was raised to hold off the auction, pay a few months and Daryl was given a job and muchneeded medical care. Thanks to the efforts of fellow US Marines and other veterans in the area, Daryl and Denise Bradley and their two children kept their home in Lynn, and have a positive outlook for 2018.

he Revere License Commission voted to continue to have the Fiesta Shows carnival next spring despite a shooting outside the carnival earlier this year. On April 16, shots were heard at the Showcase Cinema’s parking lot in the carnival area. Police still don’t know what caused the incident. A few cars were hit with bullets

but no one was injured.

At the Dec. 20 License Commission meeting, Police Chief James Guido said he was in favor of the license getting reapproved, saying the carnival does a lot of good in the community. According to Guido, proceeds from the event go to the city’s youth groups like Youth Hockey and Pop War-

Mayor, councillors set goals for the New Year

s 2017 comes to a close, officials in Revere are looking ahead to 2018 and setting their goals for the coming New Year.

Ward 1 Councillor Joanne McKenna said she is going to focus on The HYM Investment Group and their work at Suffolk Downs next year. “My first New Year’s Resolution is to work with HYM and hold community forums to make residents of Revere aware and have input into the development of Suffolk Downs,” she said. “Because of the traffic impacting Beachmont, l will work to get the Route 119 bus off of Winthrop Avenue and have a bus turnaround to pick up and drop off passengers going to and from the MBTA station.” McKenna in 2017 worked with HYM and the MBTA to ensure the bus route was a possibility.

But that is not her only goal for 2018. “Secondly, I am working with Massport and Speaker Bob DeLeo’s Office to

continue to live here and raise their families,” he said. “I want to continue making Revere the best place to live.”

CARNIVAL | from page 2 ner. “I’ve been on the job for more than 30 years and we’ve had several incidents over that time, but nothing that would justify rejecting the carnival’s application,” he said.

“We were never able to figure out whether the shots came from movie theater or carnival patrons,” Guido added. “There a lot was panic, but after our lengthy investigation we were never able to determine exactly what happened but it did not happen in the carnival itself.”

However, some residents said it is time for the carnival to go. “I’m so sick of it,” Evelyn Morris said. “I turn on my police radio and I hear trouble at the carnival. I’m upset that the poor chief has to come here and make these arrangements for this company.”

Morris said the carnival makes the city look “trashy.”

The commissioners asked for more police detail at the carnival for the dates of March 21 through April 15.

zon has promised a $5 billion investment to the right city along with 50,000 jobs over the next two decades. Amazon wants more than 100 acres to build its second corporate headquarters they are calling HQ2.

Revere applied to Amazon’s Request for Proposal (RFP) in October, and is expecting to hear back sometime in 2018.

In the RFP, it says Amazon is looking for a metropolitan area with a strong and stable business environment.

“I think Amazon would be hard pressed to find a better location than Suffolk Downs,” said Mayor Brian Arrigo in an interview with The Revere Advocate in September.

“It would be like winning the Super Bowl in terms of building an economy,” he said.

“It wouldn’t just be a game changer for Revere but for the whole Commonwealth.”

Tom O’Brien of The HYM Investment Group believes Revere has a good chance of becoming one of the top picks for the Amazon bid. “I will be flabbergasted if we are not moved to the next stage,” O’Brien said at the Nov. 13 City Council meeting.

The HYM Investment Group said they are working on developing the space where Amazon would go if it is accepted. If it is not accepted, HYM will use that space for other commercial needs. HYM wants to build two 260,000 square foot office buildings and a 520-space parking garage.

O’Brien said he would like the construction on the buildings to start by the springtime and

Whether or not Amazon comes to Revere, Suffolk Downs will still be developed.

O’Brien said HYM is planning on having 500,000 square feet of retail space. He also plans on having green space and some residential development as well.

Passing of Bob Haas In July, the city mourned the unexpected passing of former Mayor and City Council President Robert Haas. Haas passed away July 2 in Rhode Island at a vacation spot. Haas was a city councillor from 1980 to 1992 until he was elected mayor. He served the city as mayor for four terms until losing to Thomas Ambrosino in 1999.

He returned to politics in 2003 as councillor-at-large and was the council president until he passed away.

terwards, he entered the military. He would eventually receive a finance degree from Northeastern University.

“Council President Bob Haas was a wonderful guy who understood the meaning of the word ‘team,’” Councillor-atLarge Steve Morabito said to The Revere Advocate in July.

“He was always more focused on the good of the city and its people rather than on his own benefit. He made many great contributions to the city as a public servant and helped Revere move forward in numerous ways. His work and leadership in this city will not be forgotten. Most importantly, Councillor Haas was a friend and mentor to me. I will treasure the wisdom he shared with me forever.”

Mayor Brian Arrigo considered Haas a mentor. “Bob devoted his life to the residents of Revere. He served as councillor and as mayor for over 30 years. He also served his country in the Naval Reserve. He never stopped fighting for our city,” said Arrigo in July to The Revere Advocate.

“Bob has been a mentor and a friend throughout my career. His counsel and support has meant the world to me. He was always willing to share his experiences and his wisdom, both in politics and in life. Bob always reminded me that no matter what was going on, the

he Revere-Malden hockey team entered the holiday season in style, beating

O’Bryant, 12-0.

Brothers Marc and Michael Giordano had a banner night with two goals and two assists each. Meanwhile, another set

of brothers – twins Zach and Corey Rufo – each had hattricks.

Nick Summers added another goal for the Patriots.

Revere takes down Somerville as Pepic, Iacovello lift team

T

he Revere girls’ basketball team got an early Christmas gift, as they took down Somerville without too much trouble last Friday.

Revere defeated the Highlanders, 65-40 to improve to 3-1 on the young season.

The Patriots used a strong first quarter to out-pace Somerville.

Revere ended the first stanza with a 22-7 lead, and carried a 37-13 lead into halftime.

Somerville showed some gusto in the second half; Revere only out-scored the Highlanders 12-11 in the third and both teams registered 16 in the fourth.

Revere was led in scoring by Valentina Pepic, who scored 26 points. Tatiana Iacovello was also a standout for Revere, scoring 11 points with three three-point shots and 10 assists.

Erika Cheever and Emily DiGiulio had seven points.

Ayah Harper and Caroline Stasio both scored five. Harper also had two steals.

Revere’s next game is tonight at Acton-Boxborough.

The Colonials are 2-2 on the season.

anta paid a visit to the boys and girls of the PPYC, via the Atlantic Ocean. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived by boat to give a big hello to the kids on the dock, before joining them inside for breakfast.
