City Council passes Hook & Reel anchors Marketplace $206.9M FY19 budget By Sara Brown
T
he Revere City Council on Monday night made only one cut to the mayor’s proposed $206,992,903 FY19 budget, which was unanimously passed. During the June 25 Ways and Means Subcommittee meeting, the council proposed their budget cuts after a week-long meeting with department heads to discuss the budget. Councillor-at-Large Dan Rizzo was the only councillor to propose cuts. Rizzo pointed out there are 65 new positions created within the budget and 19 of them are on the government side; the rest are within the
School Department. “I don’t know what to say about that, but it is an awful lot of positions,” said Rizzo. Rizzo proposed that the City Council cut $50,000 for outside legal services. “Why give the money up front if it’s not needed now?” said Rizzo. The cut passed. The only councillors voting in opposition were Steve Morabito, Ira Novoselsky, and Jessica Giannino. Rizzo also proposed a $1 million cut to the city’s health insurance. The city was asking for $20 million for health care insurance, which is a $2.4 million increase from last year.

City honors Haas at Lincoln School playground dedication By Sara Brown
A
lmost a year after his sudden passing, the city once again came together to honor the late former Mayor and City Councillor Bob Haas. A new plaque was placed at the new Lincoln School playground to honor the former mayor and longtime councillor on June 21. The elementary school had a special place in Haas’s heart, as he attended classes as a child and his daughter Rachel Shanley currently teaches there. He also helped build the playground during a volunteer effort. During the dedication ceremony, Mayor Brian Arrigo called Haas a “mentor” and said he still isn’t used to him being gone. “I grew accustomed to asking Bob for advice all the time,” he said. “So many times I’ve thought of picking up the phone and calling him up for his opinion. It’s taken awhile to realize I can’t do that any longer.” Arrigo said the city will do its best to remember Haas and will continue to help his family grieve. “They will never be able to fill the void in their lives,” said Arrigo. “We will do our part as a city to convey our sincere con-

dolences.” Hass passed away last year while on vacation on July 2. R achel Shanley, Haas’s daughter, said her father loved the Lincoln School and would often come to their events and read to the children. She teaches second grade at the school. “We always knew we could count on him to be present,” she said. She believes the new memorial plaque is a fitting tribute
to her father. “I feel like watching the children enjoy the playground brings a smile to my face, and I know my dad would be proud to see so many children and families,” she said. “My family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.” Once the ceremony was over, Shanley and Haas’s wife, Juanita Haas, unveiled the memorial, which showcases a photo of Haas with an inscription detailing his commitment to the city.
