ments have been made that include a clubhouse, dugouts, a batting cage, a playground, a pavilion, a state-of-the-art security system and a new infield.

All have been made possible by financial donations and donations of workmanship.

Since it was built in 2004 by the World Series Park Committee, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, charitable organization, the park has prospered. Over 250 games are played every season at the park. Those teams who play games on the field are Saugus High, both varsity and freshman, Saugus Babe Ruth, Saugus Wings AAU, colleges and adult leagues. From early April through sometimes into November the park has a very busy schedule.

In addition to baseball games World Series Park has hosted Special Olympics for 6 years, a TargetCancer fundraiser for 2 years, several other fundraisers, a vigil and most recently, a Veterans/Military Appreciation Day. The park has also hosted many baseball tournaments including several Babe Ruth district tournaments and

2 Babe Ruth state tournaments as well as the Annual Saugus Alumni Game.

In 2015 World Series Park helped to raise funds for and supervised the building of the adjacent softball field that is currently used by Saugus Softball Little League and Saugus High.

“It’s hard to believe we’ll be starting our fourteenth season this year. We’ve come a long way since the first scoop of dirt was dug as we broke ground in June of 2004,” World Series Park Superintendent Bob Davis said.

“We believe we’ve made a contribution to keeping baseball alive in Saugus and given the youth of Saugus more opportunity to play baseball. Donations for our 2018 fundraiser, The Wall of Fame, are still being received,” Davis said.

“For a minimum donation of $100 you can get your name on a building plaque. Donations made out to World Series Park should be sent to 8 Holden Ave. Saugus, MA 01906. We sure appreciate all the support we’ve thus far received. We’re hoping for an early spring thaw so that we can ‘play ball.’”

Making it “lean” Superintendent says he’s requesting “a modest’ budget increase and expects criticism for not seeking more money

augus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi Jr. told School Committee members that he’s taking a different approach on his proposed educational spending plan this year -- one that blends “an academic focus” with “a modest 2.7 percent increase.”

“I think this is honesty time,” DeRuosi said Tuesday as he unveiled his budget request for the 2019 fiscal year that begins July 1 during a public hearing attended by a handful of residents and school staff.

“I’m not going to ask for millions because I’m still trying to assess what we have,” he said.

“We’re lean … I’ll be the first to tell you,” the superintendent said.

There is no point in seeking more money “until you know what you have and are getting maximum effort out of what you have,” DeRuosi added.

DeRuosi stressed that his proposed FY 2019 budget of $29,359,141 is an increase of $783,891 over the current -- a 2.74 percent increase. Personnel account for $932,313 more this year, according to his proposal.

School Committee members were expected to vote on the budget last night. None of the members offered any criticism of DeRuosi’s proposal.

“There’s a chance I will be criticized for not asking for more,” the superintendent said.

School Committee Chair Jeannie Meredith called the superintendent’s approach in crafting the budget “refreshing.”

“You did a fabulous job. You have cut where you can cut,” Meredith said.

In his PowerPoint presentation that augmented his spending plan, the superintendent offered several charts that com-

pared Saugus Public Schools with school districts of similar enrollment and demographics.

The superintendent noted his concern that some of the urban school districts “are outpacing us and as a town right now, we need to improve.”

“This doesn’t set well with me. We need to start talking academics,” he said of the town’s public education system which ranks as “Level 3” school district.

Among the major concerns DeRuosi raised in his PowerPoint presentation: While trying to improve upon the school district with current resources, Saugus has to maintain “a foot in the present and a foot in the future” as it prepares for a new educational plan and a vision to go with the new Saugus Middle High School, which is planned for an opening in the

Editor’s Note: For this week, we sat down with Dan Pranka, owner of New England Sports Tours, LLC, and asked him about the ultimate dream of any avid New England Patriots fan: going to the Super Bowl to watch the New England Patriots play the Philadelphia Eagles. Pranka, 80, worked 30 years as an airlines pilot for Delta Airlines before retiring as a captain in 1995, flying the Boeing 727. While still a pilot, he began his second career in the sports travel business by launching the first of several groups – Saugus Travel in 1972, the same year he moved to Saugus. Pranka, who served six years in the National Guard, is a native of Barkhamsted, Conn., a small town 25 miles northwest of Hartford, Conn. He has handled transportation and lodging for Boston sports fans interested in attending away games for Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and the Bruins. He claims to have offered more tours for New England sports fans than any other tour operator. His sports tours included trips to two Olympic games – to Montreal in 1976 and Los Angeles in 1984. When the Patriots went to their first Super Bowl in New Orleans to play the Chicago Bears in 1986. He booked

2,000 fans for the trip. He and his wife Joanne, also a Connecticut native, have been married for 52 years. Pranka has been a member of the Saugus Rotary Club for 42 years. He is the second member in club history to hold the office of president twice. He cites among his accomplishments, obtaining a defibrillator for the Saugus Senior Center. He served six years in the National Guard, based in Torrington, Con. Some highlights of the interview follow.

Q: How long have you been organizing tours for Boston sports fans to go on away games?

A: About 45 years.

Q: And about how many fans have set up sports game tours for over that time?

A: Probably 160,000 to 170,000 fans.

Q: So, what’s it going to cost for sports fans who are interest-

ed in attending this year’s Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles on Feb. 4?

A: For the person who is a sports fan, a Patriots fan or Eagles fan or any team out there … to get to the Super Bowl, you’ve got to have some deep pockets.

With a game ticket, transportation and hotel, you’re talking roughly $6,000 a person. So, if it’s a husband and wife, you’re talking about $12,000. And then you got other expenses once you get there, you got food and beverage. And things aren’t cheap.

The current price (as of this past Wednesday) of game tickets is $3,300 – plus a service charge of up to 30 percent. I think the NFL price for standing room is $950 and the top price is

Q: It’s like for a Patriots season ticket holder, for the amount of money you’d shell out for the Super Bowl, you could pay for several years of season tickets.

A: Yea, and then you got some people been longtime Patriots season ticket holders and they’ve never had a chance at going to a Super Bowl. I have a customer who has been a long time Pats season ticket holder going back to Fenway Park (during the 1960s). He’s 88-years old and he never got picked in the lottery. The whole time that I’ve been doing this (setting up sports tours), I’ve only known two season ticket holders who won in the lottery and one of them was from Canada.

I would figure that in the course of 10 years, the guy should have an opportunity for tickets, having been a season ticket holder for that long.

From my understanding, each participating team gets about 12,000 tickets. The venue team (where the game is played) gets 10,000 and the rest go out to the NFL. Unfortunately, the prices keep getting more and more expensive. The first year the tickets started getting out of whack was in 1998, out in San Diego, where the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers played. A normal priced ticket before the game

was about $1,200 and it skyrocketed over $3,000. Two years ago in Phoenix, Arizona just to get into the stadium on Game Day was $7,000 to $8,000 (Patriots and Seahawks).

Last year, I took 56 people down to Houston and the most expensive ticket I purchased for one of my clients was about $3,300. They were downstairs in the corner.

Q: What’s the biggest difference that you noticed from when you started setting up Super Bowl trips and getting tickets for people? What are some of the things you have observed that have sort of taken away from the experience?

A: It’s become very corporate.

Ford probably gets a couple of hundred seats. All of the advertisers out there. And the celebrities. You take a look at these celebrities on TV and everything else, you see them sitting on the 50-yard line. Who knows where they get their tickets. They may get them from brokers or the NFL. But you see them there. Do they go to a regular game during the season? Absolutely not.

If you have four club seats for the Patriots, you’re entitled to two tickets.

Q: How many of these games (Super Bowl) have you gone to over the years?

A: I’ve done probably about 40, and probably attended bout 35 of those games. Some of those games I didn’t go to. The one in Denver I didn’t go to because of the price. And the one in Miami with Atlanta and Den-

By the time I got back to the bus, I got a text that the Patriots and Atlanta were tied 2828. So, I had to watch the rest of the game with some Atlanta Falcons fans who had a TV in a van. So, all of the other people I was with stayed until the end. And they got on the field the Patriots.

Q: What was the score when you left the stadium?

A: 28-3, Falcons ahead.

Q: So, it didn’t look good at that point.

A: It looked like it was going to be a blowout. Of course, they (Pats) came back and tied the game and the kept the Falcons from scoring again and then they won it in overtime. The Patriots have won four of their Super Bowls in the last seconds of the game. When they played Seattle and Atlanta, Carolina and against the Rams.

Police cite driver for crosswalk violation in crash that injured two pedestrians P olice have cited an 80-yearold Saugus man for “failure to yield for pedestrians” in the crosswalk for a car accident last week which injured an elderly couple while they were crossing Central Street.

Lt. Ron Giorgetti said the Police Department could not release further details about the

Saugus man, 73, and wife, 80, who were injured shortly after Noon on Jan. 16.

In a press briefing last week, Giorgetti told reporters “They sustained substantial trauma,” as a result of the crash that occurred at 12:09 p.m. in the area of 345 Central St., near All City Glass Co.

“But, they were conscious and alert” to emergency medical personnel who were assisting them, he said.

Giorgetti also noted the driver of the car that hit the couple “was visibly shaken” and was evaluated by medical personnel. There were reports that he was also taken to the hospital.

A: I don’t think that’s going to affect the ticket prices at all, because if you are there, you’re going to go. If you’re a native of Minneapolis, you’re used to the snow. It’s an indoor stadium. It’s downtown, so it’s got a good location.

Last year, the NFL did their own tour packages to Houston.

I think it was three night (hotel) and transportation, a party and a game ticket … I believe it was about $5,500.

Q: What’s the most that you’ve heard a fan pay for on a Super Bowl ticket?

A: Well, last year, a person called me up who wanted some good seats. And the price for the tickets at that time were about $6,500 on the 20-yard line. And I told him to hang on. The next thing I know, he called me back and he said he got two tickets and paid $11,500. Two days later, he could have gotten the same tickets for $8,000 or $9,000.

Right now, I have six people who have booked a package with me and they have traveled with me for three or four times and they’re looking for tickets and I set them up with somebody in Boston and they guaranteed a ticket for $3,000 a ticket. The cheapest ticket you see online right now is for about $3,900.

Q: The way things are going, do you see it reaching the point where it’s too costly for the average fan to go to the Super Bowl?

Hopes of spring completion Crabtree estimated that it would probably be the spring before the project has been completed.

It remains to be seen whether the project is a success by helping to alleviate stormwater flooding issues for several homeowners in the area -- particularly those Saugus residents whose property lost value because of the flooding, according to Crabtree.

“Hopefully, we’ll have some success with alleviating some of the stormwater issues,” Crabtree said at a recent meeting of the Board of Selectmen.

So far, Perry’s property has escaped flooding during periods of heavy rain.

Lady Sachems hockey blank Waltham, 2-0

he Saugus High girls’ hockey team defeated Waltham 2-0 for the second time this season on Wednes-

day.

Saugus improved to 8-2-1 on the season with the victory, which was furnished by goals from Gemma Demento (assisted by Emma Carney) and eighth

grader Sophia Kennedy.

“Sophia has been terrific,” said Saugus Coach Anthony Martucci. “She’s very talented. I’ve been coaching her since she was eight-years-old and I can tell you

she’s very experienced despite her age.”

More broadly, Martucci was pleased with his team’s efforts against Waltham.

“Both our victories against

them were pretty scrappy,” Martucci said. “I’m glad we’ve been able to skate well and pick up the results.”

Saugus’ next game is against St. Mary’s on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Sachem boys’ hoops go 1-1 ahead of English clash

he Saugus boys’ basketball team split its game this past week, earning a blowout victory over Northeast Vocational but falling to Lynn Classical.

This week started off well with a 64-47 victory over Northeast; it was the Sachems’

second win of the season.

“It was a real shot in the arm for us,” said Saugus Coach Mark Bertrand. “I thought we played a very complete game.

We were good on offense and defense and things really came together.”

Mason Nickolas led Sachems scoring with 19 points.

Vincent Cirame, Mike Mabee,

and Christian Correia each chipped in another 13.

Unfortunately, Saugus also lost 82-31 to Lynn Classical on Tuesday night.

The quick turnaround didn’t help, though Bertrand said there’s little that can be done about the schedule.

“We have a very tough conference and there are nev-

er really any off-nights,” he said. “The schedule is how it is, but it’s definitely tough to play back to back like that. In any case, we have to learn our lesson because we’re playing back-to-back again next week when we play Medford and Revere in a two-day span.”

That said, it didn’t take long for Classical to push open the floodgates and limit Saugus’ offense.

“I think there’s kind of two ways you can react after a game like this,” Schruender said.

“You can either just accept a loss, resign yourself to the fact that you lost to a very good team and say‘we got killed by an awesome team,’ or you can look at yourself in the mirror, treat it as an individual learning experience and move on in the best possible way.”

Schruender’s philosophy is generally the latter.

Saugus has another stiff test coming up on Friday night when they play at Lynn English.

have been accepted to the college, a uniform financial aid information sheet, developed by the federal government, to assist with the financial part of the student’s decision whether to enroll in that school. Currently, an estimated 3,300 U.S. institutions across the nation, including 66 in Massachusetts, already use the information sheet.

Supporters said requiring each college to present the costs of the school per semester on the same standard form will allow potential students and their families to make apples-to-apples comparisons of the benefits and costs of attending a school. They argued it is difficult to compare costs when they are presented in a different way by each school.

“This bill represents an inexpensive solution that, starting in the 2019-2020 academic year, would help students find the colleges that will graduate them on time and with as little debt as possible,” said the bill’s sponsor Sen. Eileen Donoghue (D-Lowell). “Given our knowledge-based economy and the increasing costs of earning a degree, the commonwealth needs to empower young people and their families with easily digestible data so that students can best position themselves to pursue careers free from unnecessarily burdensome student loans.”

Sen. Thomas McGee Yes ILLEGAL HUNTING (S 2248) Senate 39-0, approved and sent to the House a bill that would increase penalties for illegal hunting, also known as poaching.

Provisions include increasing the fine for hunting bears or bobcats with the aid of a dog or bait from a range of $300 to $1,000 to a higher range of $1,000 to $5,000; raising the prison sentence from up to six months in prison to a year in prison; and increasing penalties for serial poachers who repeatedly break the law.

“As a former environmental police officer, and as an avid outdoorsman, I recognize that poaching is not only a concern for animal protection advocates and conservationists, but also law-abiding hunters,”said sponsor Sen. Michael Moore (D-Millbury).“Poachers cheat the system and gain an unfair advantage over lawful hunters. This bill will give law enforcement officers new tools to prevent poaching and to hold offenders accountable for their criminal acts.”

The measure also makes the Bay State a member of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact, a reciprocal agreement among 45 other states that allows state law enforcement agencies to share information with the other states.

It recognizes the suspension of hunting, fishing and trapping licenses in all states that are members of the compact. Any person whose license is suspended in a member state would also have

his or her license suspended in all other member states in which that conviction would be a violation resulting in suspension.

The Senate approved a similar bill in 2016 but the House never acted on it.

ere are a few tidbits that you might want to know about this week in Saugus.

School Budget to go online soon For those folks who didn’t have a chance to attend Tuesday night’s hearing on the proposed Saugus Public Schools budget for the 2019 fiscal year (which begins July 1), printed copies of the 22-page document presented by Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi Jr. were available at the meeting. There may be some additional copies at the superintendent’s office in the Roby School Building.

If the copies have run out already, Dr. DeRuosi has promised that the proposed budget in its entirety -- in addition to an interesting PowerPoint presentation he made Tuesday night -- will be posted on the Saugus Public Schools website soon after the School Committee approves his proposed budget (which was expected to happen at a meeting scheduled for last night) Dr. DeRuosi also assured me that it was his intent to get the documents up on the website as soon as possible during a conversation I had with him when I requested a copy of the PowerPoint presentation.

For those folks who can’t wait to see those documents, chill out.

You can tune into Saugus TV on Vimeo and watch the hour and 13-minute video that was posted quickly by Saugus Cable TV. And, I want to assure our readers that we’ll continue to follow the School Department and general Town Government budgets as they go through a review by the Finance Committee and eventually a vote of the 50-member Annual Town Meeting.

Taxpayers of Saugus, stay tuned.

From my conversation with the superintendent and what I heard at Tuesday’s meeting, school officials do want the public to be briefed on the proposed School Department budget. And they are concerned with making sure that town residents like Fae Saulenas, a long-time homeowner in Precinct 10 and one of our loyal reader, get the fiscal information they are seeking. As you may remember if you read last week’s Sounds of Saugus, it was Fae who called for the budget to be posted on the School Department website. She shared with The Saugus Advocate an email exchange she had with the superintendent.

To Fae and to other concerned readers, we’ll be monitoring the situation to make sure the superintendent follows through on making the budget accessible to any interested Saugus residents.

Don’t take the Pats for granted For all those sports fans in Saugus Public Schools, try to enjoy the unprecedented success of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots while it lasts.

It’s great to see TB 12 preparing for his eighth Super Bowl after a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback victory over a pesky Jacksonville Jaguars team last Sunday.

I was fortunate enough to have a ticket for that game -- as I have for the 22 playoff games the Patriots have hosted since Brady has been the starting quarterback and Bill Belichick has been coaching New England.

My brother Wayne -- a retired Swansea Public Schools teacher -- and I have been Pats season ticket holders since 1993 and have seen all 25 playoff games that have been hosted by the Pats since Bob Kraft bought the team.

But the last 17 seasons in particular have been memorable.

Just to sum up the Pats success in a string of 17 consecutive winning seasons -- the second longest in NFL history to the Dallas Cowboys, who were winners 20 seasons in a row -- consider this: The Pats got to host at least one playoff game in 15 of those seasons as a result of winning the AFC Eastern Division.

In seven of those seasons, Foxboro hosted the AFC Championship game -- winning six of those games before the hometown fans.

Brady and the Pats won another two AFC titles on the road. So, they will be making their eighth Super Bowl appearance a week from Sunday. They have won five Super Bowls with a chance for another one if they beat the Philadelphia Eagles.

The three other AFC East opponents -- the Miami Dolphins, the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills have only hosted two playoff games before their respective hometown fans during those 17 years. The Jets tied New England at 9-7 in 2002, but won the division on a tiebreaker. The Dolphins tied New England at 11-5 in 2008 (the season Brady was injured), but won on the tiebreaker.

And Buffalo fans haven’t hosted any playoff games during that time.

To put things in perspective for students in Saugus Public Schools, the Saugus High Class of 2018 will be the seventh consecutive class to graduate without having experienced a losing Patriots season.

Finally, there is no doubt that the 17 years by the Patriots have been more productive than the Cowboys’reign of success: 20 playoff wins, 13 NFC East titles, five NFC Championships and two Super Bowl Championships. In just three fewer seasons, the Pats have won 27 playoff games (seven more than Dallas), 15 division titles (two more than Dallas), eight conference championships (three more than Dallas) and five Super Bowl titles (three more than Dallas) with a chance to win another on Feb. 4.

If the Patriots -- with Brady quarterbacking and Belichick coaching -- have three more consecutive winning seasons to tie the Dallas record, that will be two decades of dominance in pro football that will probably never be matched in our lifetime.

So, kids and grown up football fans, savor that success while it lasts. The Patriots have given you some great entertainment over the Brady and Belichick years.

It’s certainly a model of success that Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi Jr. -- a football fan himself -- loves to frequently point, just as he did at this week’s public hearing on his proposed School Department budget.

“I don’t want to be the Cleveland Browns of Public Education,” said Dr. DeRuosi, whose goal is to help raise the academic standing of Saugus from a Level 3 School District into a Level 2 District -- and eventually Level 1.

“I want to be a Patriots,”DeRuosi added. He’s made references before to the Patriots and the Brown’s -- one of the NFL’s worst teams, which finished 0-16 this past season.

News from the New Friends This just in from Pauline Gautreau of the New Friends of Saugus Public Library. The New Friends are now set up to accept donations of stock transfers as well as cash, according to a press release we received from the group this week.

“And, it’s a plus for the town to get this done -- because I don’t have to go to the meetings anymore,” Perry quipped.

“The Engineering Department asked me for some input. I said ‘I’d like to see more drains. So, they put in more drains,” he said.

It took more than 15 months before work began on the project after it was approved by Town Meeting.

But Perry said he’s learned to be patient over the years.

“As the old saying goes,‘Rome wasn’t built in a day. Well, it’s taken me about 40 years.

“I’m so happy that the town

has taken care of this water problem, because the stormwater use to back up into my sewer line and into my basement And, it costs me over a hundred thousand bucks to redo the basement, refurbish the furnace and get a new refrigerator, washer and dryer, “he said.

“At one time, I used to be down at Town Hall every month. One thing I learned is that you’ve got to be persistent.

That’s what it takes to get anything done.”

Each Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3 to 5 pm, the library provides tutoring and homework help for the Town’s elementary school students. The elementary school students get help, the Belmonte students get credits for community service.

The library again will be partnering with the Belmonte Middle School to offer free, drop-in homework help in the Community Room to Saugus elementary school students to help foster strong academic and study skills outside of school hours.

No registration is required, but students must be signed in/out by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must remain on library grounds while the student is receiving homework assistance pursuant to our unaccompanied minors policy.

This program is open to students in grades K-5. The subjects students can get help with include: math, science, grammar, reading, social studies, geography and more. Hey parents, here’s some help if your child needs it.

“This flooding occurs because there is insufficient culvert capacity under Elm Street and the existing drainage system in the surrounding neighborhood is undersized and inadequate,” the CDM Smith memo concluded.

“The Elm Street culvert creates a bottleneck in the Saugus River which, during major storms, overtops Elm Street and floods nearby properties,” it continued.

“Additionally, undersized drainage pipes and a lack of catch basins in the neighborhood exacerbate the flooding. … Based on this analysis, the existing drainage system does not have enough capacity for even a 2-year, 24-hour storm. Flooding is particularly severe in the low-lying areas along Alvah and Innis Streets, as well as Holland and Saville Streets.”

CDM Smith noted several areas that needed to be clarified before making Elm Street drainage system improvements or determining if the project could be phased over several years. They included: Conduct a hydraulic study to determine the pipe sizes needed for the Elm Street culvert.

Determine the extent of utility relocations required in order to construct new pipelines.

Evaluate and recommend potential phasing of the project.

Provide an estimate of costs for a single and multiple construction contracts based on new data.

CDM Smith recommended the town conduct a preliminary design evaluation of all four items before “committing resources to the full project in order to confirm the scope of work required and the full benefit of the project.”

The company estimated the study would cost $25,000 and that construction costs would be $1.2 million.

Crabtree noted that possible relief could have come several years ago -- if a previous Board of Selectmen hadn’t rejected a $1.3-million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“I wish the town had accepted the FEMA grant,” Crabtree told the Town Meeting members two years ago “The FEMA grant would have taken the bridge out and widened the river. We’re left with doing a different solution,” he said.

A 2.8 percent dropout rate of High School students. Saugus High School Principal Michael Hashem noted that the dropout rate has“gone up and down”and was as high as 5.6 percent several years ago.

DeRuosi said he was concerned about the 85.6 percent retention rate of students, with so many going on to charter schools and private schools. The superintendent stressed it was important to shift the district’s focus on academics to make the town education system attractive to residents who are interested in attending local schools.

“We’re trying to rebrand a town. We have to shift our focus on academics,”DeRuosi said.

School Committee member Linda Gaieski said the school district would not improve to Level 2 and eventually Level 1 unless the school district “raised the rigor.”

“We’re losing 400 to 500 kids to private schools and charter schools” because they are “a more rigorous challenge,” emphasizing that it’s what parents are looking for.

Meredith told Gaieski she disagreed. She said she’s hearing from parents that the academic work is “too hard.” She insisted that “the rigor” does exist in the school district.

DeRuosi said he’s heard that there’s a fear among parents of their children “falling between the cracks.”
