hree Saugus citizens who have contributed greatly to the betterment of their town shared some insight about favorite books that helped to influence their lives.

That was the main event served up last Saturday at the Foundation for the Saugus Public Library’s (SPL) Fourth Annual Gala, which honored this year’s “Readers Make Good

Leaders” award recipients. The town’s biggest library supporters joined with a handful of local officials and community leaders to celebrate the library while recognizing this year’s award winners: • Gordon E. Shepard, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War who has spent countless volunteer hours, taking care of veterans gravesites in the Riverside Cemetery.

• Harry Mazman, a longtime

supporter and booster of Saugus High School athletics.

• Peter A. Rossetti, Jr., a longtime civic leader who has been involved in many positions as a volunteer representative of Saugus town government.

• Seven Greer, a senior at Saugus High School and president of the Class of 2019, also was one of this year’s honorees. But he was unable to make last Sat-

Final weekend for the Haunted House

Mazman, an All Star high school and college athlete and Saugus Boosters Club President since 1980, said his favorite book is “Churchill” by Paul Johnson. “I have always enjoyed reading biographies and nonfiction books, especially historical books. Allowing me to learn about past and current events is what I like best about reading. You are able to learn about more history and the people and events that took place through their eyes.

“Reading is important because it can educate you about our country’s past to the present.”

Greer chose “Black Boy” by Richard Wright as his favorite book “because it was an honest insight into the life of an African American growing up in the south in the 1920’s and how issues then have translated to and are parallel to these times we live in today. “I have always enjoyed reading as I was encouraged to read at an early age. Reading is important as it can take you to different places and gives you a window into other people’s lives and their experiences.”

To the Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to extend my deepest appreciation and respect to the Saugus High School Football Team.

I attended the Saugus v.

Swampscott game on Friday night -- under the lights -- a perfect night for hometown football. There was a large crowd of fans at the gate made up of parents, school chums and perennial Saugonians who never miss a game attending to support their hometown team.

Saugus knew what they were up against -- the Swampscott record of6-1 said it all – they were facing a tough team but, unlike the Malden move of forfeiting a game with undefeated Everett, Saugus had no part of that and came onto the field, fired up, fearless and ready to play.

In the end, Swampscott beat Saugus fair and square and went on to add another victory to their outstanding record.

Despite the odds, Saugus never quit; they played the game like the kind of teammates they are- courageous, fearless and full of spirit --despite the ‘off the field’ loss of their former coach and having to deal with the constant hot political turmoil that surrounds them to this day.

The team gave it their all -and when it comes to character, class and good sportsmanship they win the trophy.

Town completes energy-efficiency capital projects at library and public safety building gy savings each year.”

The Library and the Public Safety building are two of the highest energy consumers of all municipal administrative buildings, excluding the schools. These projects built upon LED lighting upgrades at the Veteran’s Memorial and Belmonte Schools, as well as the Commissioning Advantage performed at the Veteran’s Memorial School.

The Town was awarded the grant during a ceremony at the State House in Boston last year. This is the second set of funding the Town has received through the Green Communities initiative; the first grant of $208,335 was awarded when Saugus was first designed as a Green Community in 2015,

Crabtree is pleased to announce the Town of Saugus has completed a series of capital improvement projects at the Saugus Public Library and Public Safety Building as part of an ongoing effort to improve energy efficiency and increase cost savings within the community.

In 2017, the Town was awarded $242,903 in Green Communities Competitive Grant Funding through the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) to fund five sustainability-related projects at the Library and Public Safety Building. These projects, which were paid for through the Green Communities grant, have saved taxpayers $242,903 in project costs, plus an additional estimated $29,984 annually in energy reduction costs.

The energy-saving projects that have been completed at the two Town buildings include: • Interior LED Lighting replacements at the Public Safety Building.

• Interior and Exterior LED Lighting replacements at the Library.

• A Commissioning Advantage performed at the Library, which is a process of checking the entire mechanical system to ensure it is functioning at its optimal capacity prior to making any necessary upgrades.

• A new Energy Management

System (EMS) installed at the Library, which will allow remote monitoring and better control over the HVAC systems.

• The Roof Top Unit (HVAC) replaced at the Library, which will greatly improve the air quality and comfort of the building, as well as decrease energy bills over time.

“This necessary conversion to LED lighting at the Library and Public Safety Building alone will save taxpayers an estimated $25,441 annually,” said Town Manager Crabtree. “Not only have all five of these projects been completed at no cost to our residents, but they will also continue to save the Town tens of thousands of dollars in ener-

lan Briones said his job brought him here all the way from Mexico. But it was his affiliation with the Masons back in his own country five years ago that enabled him to settle into Saugus, where he could live a good life and bond with other men who love being involved in charitable causes.

“I found this lodge,” Briones said, referring to the First Congregational Church at 300 Central St. – home of the William Sutton Lodge A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free and Accepted Masons).

“I lived close by and I said, ‘Why not continue my journey?” he said of the organization that has allowed him to build friendships while doing good work for the community.

Donald McElwaney, a Saugus resident who has been a member of the lodge for a decade, said he became a Mason late in life, even though he had a long history of Masons in his family.

“Everyone that wanted me to join died before I did: my grandfather, my uncle and my father,” said McElwaney, who serves as the lodge’s assistant treasurer.

“I was 56 when I joined. I’m retired, and all of a sudden the distance grows between the

people you worked with. They retire and move away. So, this means a lot – a lot of friendship,” he said.

Briones and McElwaney were among several members of William Sutton Lodge who met with The Saugus Advocate for about an hour last week to reflect on what it means to be a Mason and how it has enriched their lives.

They only have to bring it back when they’re done using it.

“Masonry is very much like Scouting, without the kids. We find more and more men are involved in Scouting and Masonry,” former Lodge Master Kevin M. Wildman said.

“It’s a huge brotherhood.

When you join, you instantly have something in common with the other members and something to talk about,” said Wildman, who is also Scoutmaster of Saugus Boy Scout Troop 61.

Jim Virnelli, Jr., can relate to what Wildman is talking about.

His dad, Jim Virnelli, Sr., was a legendary Scoutmaster for about three decades at Troop 61. He has also been a Mason for 47 years. “I joined to spend some time with my dad in a different atmosphere,” said Virnelli, the chaplain and now in his 13th year with the lodge.

“It builds friendships and it gives you something to talk about. It’s cross-generational, cross-trades and cross-professional. My father and my mother’s father became Masons,” he said. Virnelli is a 1980 Saugus High School graduate.

A history of helping The Saugus lodge has been involved in numerous charitable causes throughout its 151-year-old-history. It has organized a lot of blood drives and has been involved in many other noble causes, such as the Masonic Youth Child Identification Program (MYCHIP). Parents can bring their kids in and get fingerprints and DNA swabs taken. And all of that information is gathered and given to the parent, in case they ever experience the nightmare of a missing child.

The local Masons also support the Senior Center, offsetting some of the seniors’ costs for lunch. Local Masons are also involved with the Hospital Equipment Loan Program (HELP). A farewell planned for Rev. Martha A farewell lunch is planned for Rev. Martha Leahy of the First Congregational Church UCC in Saugus Center on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church hall (300 Central St.). Sandwiches and coffee will be served. Folks in town who want to say their farewells to Rev. Martha are welcome.

Rev. Martha has been a key person in the community – particularly the faith community – since she was called to Saugus in 2008. She currently serves as leader of the Saugus Faith Community. And her departure will be a huge loss for the town until others step up to fill the void.

Rev. Martha plans to retire to Maine next month with her husband.

The Saugus Faith Community said farewell to Rev. Martha, who is leaving First Congregational Church UCC on Nov. 11.

To offset food-insecure households, Healthy Students– Healthy Saugus will provide

a weekend’s supply of nutritious food for each eligible child when school lunches and breakfasts are unavailable to them on weekends or school holidays during the school year.

Take-home grocery bags will contain two breakfasts, two lunches, two snacks, one can of vegetables and one can of fruit.

All food will be nonperishable and provided to children free of charge. If additional food is needed for extended family members, it will be provided.

It is hoped that these resources will support the health, behavior and achievement of every student who participates.

Parents will apply for the program by filling out a simple consent form.

The program will be run by the school department’s current food service provider, Whitsons, and the many wonderful volunteers who will be packing the food bags. On Thursdays, Whitsons will deliver food and grocery bags to each volunteer site, where the bags will be packed, then picked up by Whitsons on Fridays and delivered to the schools for students to take home. The program will begin first at the elementary schools and, if the need arises, will be expanded to the upper grades. The school district will use the utmost discretion in identifying students and working with families to ensure the grocery bags make it home with minimal barriers. The aim of Healthy Students–Healthy Saugus is to keep children healthy, thriving and able to succeed in school.

Area businesses and organizations supporting this effort are Whitsons, Rotary Club of Saugus, Wheelabrator and Saugus Public Schools.

n my last column I told you about my choice for the greatest hitter of all time, Ted Williams. This column is also about a great batter, Wade Boggs. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on June 15, 1958, and unlike many I write about, he is still alive. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on April 10, 1982, for the Boston Red Sox, and his last appearance was on August 27, 1999, for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

He played for the Red Sox from 1982 to 1992, the New York Yankees from 1993 to 1997, and finally for the Devil Rays from 1998 until 1999.

He had a lifetime batting average of .328, got 3,010 hits, 118 home runs and 1,014 runs batted in. During his MLB career he had 12 All-Star appearances, two Golden Glove Awards, eight Silver Slugger Awards and was five times Batting Champion. He was a member of the 1996 Yankees who won the World Series. The Yankees won in six games, and after the last game he jumped aboard a NYPD horse, pointed his index finger up and rode around the field, although he himself said he was terrified of horses.

His father was in the military

and the family traveled extensively. They moved to Tampa when he was 11, and Wade was a graduate of Plant High School in Tampa. He played baseball and was an All-State football player. He was a left-footed placekicker and punter in high school. Wade was selected by the Red Sox in the seventh round of the MLB draft in 1976. He was offered a football scholarship by the University of South Carolina, but he preferred baseball and signed with Boston.

In his minor league years with the Pawtucket Red Sox, he was a player in the longest game in professional baseball (in 1981) in a game that went 33 innings, for eight hours and 25 minutes, over two days.

Boggs was the batting champion in his last minor league season, when he batted .335 and had 167 hits.

In his rookie year with the Sox, he batted .349 as a lefthanded hitter and was denied the batting championship because he had only 381 at bats where 502 were required. He had seven consecutive seasons of 200 or more hits, and in 1985 had 72 multihit games as the Red Sox record. In 1986 as the third base-

Ralph Gibbs has family roots in Masonry that go back two generations. “It’s something I take great, personal pride in.

My grandfather was a member of this lodge,” Gibbs said, referring to Ralph Winthrop Perkins of Saugus, who was a chaplain of the lodge.

“My dad was a Mason – the late Bruce Gibbs. My grandfather, Ralph Elliott Gibbs, was a Mason.

My mother was a Rainbow Girl, a Masonic youth organization for girls. She always spoke highly of the Masons. Even though I never knew my grandfather, I knew he was a member of the lodge,”

Gibbs said.

But even with that kind of family background, Gibbs didn’t get involved until several years ago. “Kevin [Wildman] and I have been best friends for over 32 years. After Kevin joined, it piqued my interest even more,” Gibbs said. His friendship with Wildman was quite influential, as Gibbs recently succeeded Wildman as the lodge’s new Worshipful Master of the Lodge.

Gibbs also noted that he, Wildman and Galarneau have an interesting personal connection: Their wives are 1989 Saugus High School graduates.

Galarneau married Lisa Lavoie.

Wildman married Colleen King.

After his five years with the Yankees, he finished up in his hometown, Tampa Bay. Boggs got to pitch for both the Yankees and the Devil Rays. For New York, he had one inning with the Yankees and shut out the Angels with his knuckleball. For the Devil Rays, he pitched for 1.1 innings, giving up one run to the Orioles.

Boggs was well known for his superstitious feelings, and he ate chicken before every game of his MLB career. He rose up every morning at the same time and ran sprints at 7:17 each morning. Arriving at the batter’s box, he drew the Hebrew word “Chai,” which means “life,” in the dirt with his bat.

Boggs was, in my mind, the best third baseman for the Sox over his career, mainly for his hitting although he was a very good infielder.

Gibbs married Carolyn Linnett.

“Our wives graduated together and we were at each other’s weddings,” Wildman said.

Joe Beaton, of West Lynn, is the lodge’s Masonic ambassador. His prime job is to recruit new members. He credits his maternal grandfather for one of the reasons he joined the Masons. “He was raised in Camperdown Lodge in Dundee, Scotland, in May of 1919. I have all of his paperwork. It’s great to be part of a team,” Beaton said.

The School Building Committee had the opportunity to learn about and admire the extensive site work, the building’s concrete foundation, and the first series of erected steel columns and beams outlining a portion of the structure. Since work began on the project a few months ago, nearly 2,000 linear feet of underground piping has been installed, which includes water, sewer, drain, and fire protection lines.

he Saugus Sachems hung close for the first half of last Friday’s game against Swampscott. But the powerful Big Blue imposed their will, scoring 29 points in the second half and pulling away to a convincing 42-0 win under the lights at

Stackpole Field.

The defeat left Saugus at 2-5 on the season while Swampscott improved to 6-1. Despite only two victories, the Sachems were given the sixth seed in the Div. 5 tournament and play at thirdseeded Weston (4-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. Top-seeded Swampscott is hosting No. 8 Triton, which is win-

The Saugus defense performed admirably in the first half last Friday, holding Swampscott to 13 points despite several trips inside the red zone by the visitors. On the other side, the Sachems’ offense struggled mightily, not managing a first down the entire game.

School officials are “no shows” at library gala Do the School Superintendent and School Committee members even give a darn about the town’s library?

Perhaps I’m reading too much into this. But it did strike me as rather lame that none of the School Committee members or School Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi were at last Saturday’s (Oct. 20) 4th annual Saugus Public Library Foundation Gala.

Even Seven Greer, a senior at Saugus High School and president of the Class of 2019 – and one of four Saugus residents honored this year as “Readers Make Good Leaders” – was unable to make last Saturday’s gala because of plans to attend a wedding.

But that shouldn’t have stopped a representative of Saugus Public Schools from attending the gala. It would have been the classy thing to do. It would have showed that school leaders embrace the library for all it does for the town and the hundreds of kids who use it each week.

It also would have been a great opportunity for the Superintendent or School Committee members to make suggestions or requests for special programs or resource material that could enrich the education of local children. I mean we’re talking the lifeblood of learning.

Some of the people I ran into at the library gala noticed the conspicuous absence of school officials. And a few said they thought it was bad PR, but didn’t want to make a big deal about it. Well, I’ll be the bad guy who calls them out.

An exceptional ambassador for the Town of Saugus The Board of Selectmen Chair, Debra Panetta, showed up as a visible representative of town government, as she usually does at these affairs. In fact, I can’t recall a single crowd-drawing civic or community event that I have covered over the last two and a half years where she was absent. Like her or not, you’ve got to credit the chair of the Saugus Board of Selectmen for being a great ambassador for the town by showing up at all of these events as well as promoting them wherever possible in her capacity as a town official. And for that, she should take a bow.

Of citizen concern A couple of loyal readers have emailed me a copy of the agenda for next Tuesday’s (Oct. 30) Policy Subcommittee meeting of the School Committee.

One thing that caught my eye was the bold red lettering on the meeting notice: “Warning: If there is no Quorum of members present, or if meeting posting is not in compliance with the OML Statute, No meeting may be held.”

Well, it’s good to see the committee is making an effort to begin complying with “the OML,” which is short for the state Open Meeting Law. Lord knows it’s been a tough year for the School Committee when it comes to complying with the Open Meeting Law – as a result of three successful complaints I filed with the state Attorney General’s Division of Open Government. One of the complaints that was validated by the Division of Open Government was an illegal closed-door executive session that was held to discuss budget matters.

One of the most interesting items on the subcommittee’s agenda is referred to as “Social Media Guidelines for School Commit-

Veterans Day coming up It’s just a few weeks away until the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day – now known as Veterans Day – an observance of the end of World War I, November 11, 1918.

The Saugus Veterans Council will hold a simple Veterans Day observance at Veterans Park at the corner on Winter & Central Streets on Nov. 11 at 11:00 a.m.

No parade is planned for this year’s Veterans Day observance.

And there will be no collation or gathering over a meal upstairs at the Saugus American Legion Hall (Cpl. Scott J. Procopio Post 210) on Taylor Street as has been a tradition in past years, following the parade and ceremonies.

Fourteen Saugus men died fighting for their country during World War I, according to the 14 stars that flank the names of Saugonians on the World War I Honor Roll encased in a wooden frame to the right of the steps leading into Saugus Town Hall.

Hopefully, the names of those men who gave the ultimate sacrifice in “the war to end all wars” will be recognized by local veterans and citizens alike during the town’s Veteran’s Day observances next month.

Main Attractions at the Saugus Public Library There’s always something interesting or entertaining going on at the Saugus Public Library – for people of all ages – from young children to senior citizens. With the ongoing construction at Chestnut Woods Rehabilitation & Health Care Center (73 Chestnut St.), there will be a temporary relocation of the Precinct 3 polling location to the Italian American Club at 1 Beachview Ave., the current polling location for Precinct 10 voters. Town Clerk Ellen Schena says she needs to notify every Precinct 3 voter by mail of the change, which will take place for the Nov. 6 general election. The Italian American Club has ample parking to accommodate voters from both precincts, according to the town clerk.

Household Hazardous Waste Day coming Residents are invited to dispose of their household hazardous waste in an environmentally responsible manner during a collection event on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at Saugus High School. The rain-or-shine event will allow residents to dispose of many household waste products, including rubber cement, airplane glue, fiberglass resins, aerosol cans, photo chemicals, furniture polish, floor and metal polish, oven cleaner, drain and toilet cleaner, spot remover, rug and upholstery cleaner, hobby and artist supplies, photography chemicals, turpentine and chemistry sets.

Interested residents should preregister for this free event in order to reduce any wait time.

You may preregister by contacting Solid Waste/Recycling Coordinator Lorna Cerbone at 781-231-4036 or by visiting the Solid Waste/Recycling Department (515 Main St.). Residents may also visit the Inspectional Services Department (in the lower level of Town Hall) or call 781-231-4115. Proof of residency is required to participate in this event.

The following garage supplies will also be accepted: fuel, gasoline, kerosene, engine degreaser, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, transmission fluid, car wax, polishes, driveway sealer, car batteries, antifreeze, cesspool cleaners, roofing tar, swimming pool chemicals, motor oil and car batteries.

Accepted workbench waste includes oil-based paints, stains, varnishes, wood preservatives, paint strippers or thinners, solvent adhesives and lighter fluid. Residents may also bring the following yard waste: weed killer, chemical fertilizers, flea control products, mothballs, poisons, insecticides, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.

Residents are urged to take caution when transporting household hazardous materials. Locals may do so by keeping the materials in their original containers, tightening caps and lids, sorting and packing products separately and packing containers in sturdy upright boxes padded with newspaper.

Please remember never to mix chemicals or to smoke while handling hazardous materials.

The hazardous household waste collection will not accept commercial waste. Residents will be limited to two carloads, the equivalent of 50 pounds or 50 gallons, of hazardous waste.

The following items will not be accepted: empty containers or trash, latex paint, commercial or industrial waste, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, infectious and biological wastes, ammunition, fireworks, explosives, fire extinguishers or syringes.

TVs, computers, and car tires may be recycled at the dropoff site located at 515 Main St. on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Propane tanks of up to 20 pounds may be disposed of for $5.

Town announces reopening of CHaRM Center Recycling Drop-Off site The Town of Saugus announces that the community’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) site will be open to residents on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The site is located behind the Department of Public Works at 515 Main St. There is no preregistration or fee required to enter the site; however, proof of residency is required.

At the CHaRM center, the Town will accept the same recycling items that can be placed outside for curbside collection each week, such as paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and glass containers. Additional acceptable items include TVs and computers (up to three per year per address); car tires up to 22” (for a fee of $3); books; and textiles, such as clothing, bedding, pocketbooks, belts and shoes.

Plastic bags and rigid plastics are not permitted. Residents are kindly asked to empty recyclables out of any plastic bags, and remove the bags from the site.

Solid Waste/Recycling Department announces acceptable recyclable materials The Town of Saugus’s Solid Waste and Recycling Department Coordinator, Lorna Cerbone, would like to remind residents that the following ma-

terials are recyclable and may be placed curbside for collection each week: paper, cardboard, pizza boxes, and mixed containers, such as glass, tin, plastic cans, various containers and jugs. All cardboard boxes should be broken down to 3’ by 3’, and pizza boxes and mixed containers should be clean.

The following materials may not be recycled through the Town’s curbside collection service: • Plastic bags and film wraps – can be recycled at a local food store, Walmart or Target.

• Styrofoam – should be placed in the trash.

• Clothes hangers – can be given to dry-cleaners.

• Plastic hoses – dispose in the trash.

• Rigid plastics and toys – may be disposed of curbside with $2 sticker.

• Scrap metal – can be recycled at the drop-off site.

“Due to recent international recycling restrictions, our local collection facility is no longer able to recycle materials in plastic bags or rigid plastic items,” said Cerbone. “We encourage residents to recycle their plastic bags at your local supermarket or retailer, and dispose of any rigid plastic items curbside with a $2 sticker.”

The Town of Saugus applied for this grant through the firstround of Green Communities Competitive Grant funding in March of 2017. This round of funding was competitive and there was no guarantee the Town would receive any funding. The Town’s project proposals were compared to other Green Communities, and the DOER Green Communities Division weighed each project proposal individually and found that Saugus was deserving of funding.

This competitive round of funding awarded 72 communities with a total of $14 million, the largest amount awarded since the inception of the Green Communities program.

As a Green Community, Saugus has committed to reducing its energy consump-

tion by 20 percent within five years. This award and the projects selected are crucial to achieving this ambitious goal.

“We are extremely grateful that the Town of Saugus is a three-time recipient of this generous grant through the Department of Energy Resources. This funding has and will continue to benefit the Town of Saugus through energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness,” concluded Town Manager Crabtree.

pumpkins earlier this month from “The Pumpkin Truck,” which traveled from the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. The 15th Annual Pumpkin Patch will run through Halloween, October 31.

Proceeds from the Patch help fund a yearly $500 scholarship for any graduating Saugus High School student who is continuing on to further education. Applications with the criteria listed are available from the church office.

Wong: The most impactful solution would be to extend the Blue Line into Lynn. Perhaps even a station in or near East Saugus. The traffic issue is statewide as well as country-

wide. Once the conversation begins in a reality of making this project happen, I will be instrumental in being a part of this for the town of Saugus.

The Boy with a Dream It all started as a young kid from Everett taking apart my bikes, painting and putting them back together. At 16 years-old before I even got my driver’s license, I purchased my first car; a 1969 Caddy 4-door sedan with wide gangster white walls and chromed spoke rims. It needed some bodywork and a paint job but I knew from all those years of experience with my bikes that I was up for the challenge. That is when it became clear to me where my future was headed.

In May of 1979 I graduated Pope John XXIII High School focusing mostly on Business Management. I owe a lot of credit to Pope John; they had great teachers, all that inspired me in some way shape or form, but three of which stuck out the most in my mind were Sister Peggy, Sister Lorraine and Sister Nancy. They all watched me go through a struggle in my life losing my mother at the age of nine and being brought up by a single dad; but they never allowed me to fail, always going out of their way to help me out. Sister Peggy was like the mother I lost from above and she did everything she could to help guide me in the right direction. To this day, I am extremely close to them all and visit on a monthly basis.

After graduation in 1979, I went to Rhode Island Trade Shop School in Providence. Every single day for nine months I drove from Mass. to Rhode Island, all while holding down 1-2 part time jobs in between. The days were extremely long and hard. In October of 1979, I decided to set up a business before I graduated. I rented a building in Chelsea and repaired cars on the weekends. My dream was now becoming a reality with the sole purpose of making my parents proud.

In the summer of 1980, I found a shop in Malden thanks to my good friends Mike Tamagna and Paul DiPietro of Tamanga DiPietro Electrical. They rented a building from Sam DeMarco on Maplewood Street and they asked Sam if he would like to rent space to me. Sam worked on the building for five months turning it into a three-bay garage just for me. At that time I felt like I was on top of the world. I was there for around five years and after expanding the shop twice, I knew a bigger space was needed and decided to move on.

I found a 10 bay shop that I rented on Franklin Street in Malden. I stayed at that location for six years until the building was sold. The sale was devastating as I had very little time to find another location. My best friend, John MacMillan, a mechanic who worked with me on Franklin Street decided to approach another local businessman, Donald Adelman, owner of Commonwealth Lumbar at 388 Eastern Ave in Malden and together we negotiated a lease. It was basically an empty shed but being under the gun to find a new location quickly, we decided to take a risk. We started from scratch 60 days and 60 nights while running the regular business. With the help of many close friends donating their time we built an incredible 18-bay shop with all new offices and all new equipment. In 60 days we conquered our dreams.

In 1999, I was approached by Joe Laham, the owner of North Shore Motors dealership on Broadway. Joe told me he heard that I was a good businessman in Malden and he offered me an opportunity to lease his body shop. At that time his shop was the biggest in Malden at 8900 sq. ft. with 25 bays, 2 spray booths and 3 frame machines. This was a great opportunity and my big chance to be on Broadway in Malden, but the timing couldn’t be worse as I was literally getting on a plane and leaving for vacation. He needed an answer right away and I told him I would call him from my vacation in three days with an answer. After the three days were up, I called Joe and told him I would take it. The lease was for five years with a five-year renewal option. Needless to say, I did not sleep the rest of my vacation. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

When I came back from vacation I took on another two month project setting up the shop on Broadway. This time I had the master help me, Jerry Bartolo, my father. I told him I would get him some help and he had the place cleaned up and painted. I brought in my good friends Tamagna and DiPietro Electrical to wire the new shop for equipment and offices. I was now the largest shop in Malden. I had approximately eight guys on the floor, two office staff and myself. I would look through my office glass window above one end of the shop and think how proud I was of how far I had come. Eleven years later, the dealership had changed hands three times and was not doing well. I decided it was time to start over. I told myself enough is enough it’s time to buy my own building.

During my years in business I became very involved with the civic community in Malden. I became a member of the Malden Kiwanis Club, served on the Board of Directors for 10 years in the Malden Chamber of Commerce as well as serving as Vice President and then President. I am very proud to be part of sponsoring and donating to a room dedicated to the Hallmark Health Cancer Center in Stoneham along with the Malden Chamber of Commerce. Therefore, it was extremely important that my business stayed in Malden as it had become Tony’s Auto Body LLC’s home. I looked for many months and finally came across a 5,000 square foot building on Sharon Street off of Eastern Ave. It was a warehouse building but I was once again determined. I worked extremely hard to get all my licensing and permits. Thanks to being a good business man with a good reputation in Malden for many years I got a lot of support from the Planning Board and my lawyer, Atty. Christopher Fallon.

I started the process in November of 2007 and passed papers on my building in February of 2008. Now the real work would once again begin with the set up. It was a complete gut out with engineering putting on an addition for spray booths and an office and then transferring all my equipment to my new building while never skipping a beat. May 19th of 2008 it happened, the grand opening.

On October 3rd 2018, I will be in business 40 years. I am now 57-years-old and I fulfilled my dream knowing my parents are looking down at me and are very proud of me and what I have accomplished in my life.

I want to thank the City of Malden for letting me serve their great community. I am looking forward to many more years to come serving in this great city.

To close in this story, I would have to say always treat every customer the way you would want to be treated and remember my favorite words is “to believe and never stop dreaming of what you want in life”.

Mayor, City Council to apply $12.5 million Wynn payment to reduce tax rate The City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor Carlo DeMaria on Monday, November 13 to apply the entirety of Wynn Boston Harbor’s $12.5 million payment to the City of Everett toward reducing next year’s tax rate. The mayor made a similar move last year, when he successfully applied the entirety of a $5 million payment from Wynn toward the tax rate.

City Council adopts FY 18 tax rate The City Council unanimously voted to adopt a split levy rate on Monday, November 27, shifting the burden from residential to Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) at the highest shift of 175 percent.

The FY 18 tax rate will be $13.78 per $1,000 of valuation on residential properties and $33.74 per $1,000 of valuation on CIP properties. If the council hadn’t approved the shift, the flat rate for residential property and CIP would have been $19.28 per $1,000.

The shift will not prevent homeowners from seeing a small increase in their actual taxes, as home values have skyrocketed in the city over the last year.

On average, single-family home values rose by about $39,000 since the last fiscal year, while two-family and three-family residences on average rose $50,000.
