Job Fair a rousing success

By Tara Vocino ith school already underway in some school districts, the superintendent released a statement about start and end times with a 10-minute longer school day for encore classes at the elementary level. Kindergarten students at the Hill Elementary School started on Wednesday, Aug. 22. But the first day for students in grades one through 12 at all other schools is Wednesday, Aug. 29, and the first day for kindergarten students in all other schools is Wednesday, Sept. 5, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dianne K. Kelly said in a statement. The A.C. Whelan School has an updated arrival and dismissal time of 7:55 a.m. to 3:47 p.m., she wrote. Hill School also has an extended day from 8 a.m. to 3:40 p.m., and Garfield School has a late bell of 8:25 a.m. with a dismissal at 2:45 p.m., Kelly wrote. “We are thankful to the School Committee and the Revere Teachers Union who worked together to provide additional time for students,�

Kelly went on to say. “This time is allowing us to extend encore classes to 40 minutes instead of 30 for all students in grades K to 5 at all schools (not just ELT schools as was the case before).� She added that they felt this will enable all students to more deeply explore art, music, physical education and other subjects that research shows enhance child development and the overall educational experience. State denies former police chief’s appeal for civil service reinstatement Special to The Advocate he Massachusetts Human Resources Division (HRD) last week dismissed former Police Chief Joseph Cafarelli’s appeal for reinstatement to his previous Civil Service position as a Lieutenant on Revere’s police force. HRD determined that the former Chief vacated his former civil service position on July 2, 2012, when he was promoted to a five-year appointment as Chief of Police, a position not governed by civil service regulations. Cafarelli maintained that he was on a leave of absence from his civil service position during his tenure as Chief. In a four-page decision, HRD General Counsel John Marra noted that neither the

City of Revere nor Cafarelli had notified HRD of Cafarelli’s promotion at the time. Citing Massachusetts law, Marra noted that to maintain his eligibility for reinstatement, the necessary extended leave of absence from the civil service position was contingent on HRD

approval in 2012. The HRD decision said: “There is no evidence that the Appellant (Cafarelli) sought and received prior approval from the HRD granting a leave of absence during his employment as
