Almost 400 absentee ballots taken out for Sept. 4 primary

By The Advocate lmost 400 absentee ballots have been granted for the September 4 primary, a larger-than-typical number which could easily total 10 percent of the total vote. According to the Everett Election Commission, 388 absentee ballots have been requested for the September 4 primary. Two-hundred and thirteen of those ballots have been returned as of Wednesday, August 22 (ballots can be returned until the closing of the polls the

day after Labor Day), but the ballots can be submitted as late as 5 p.m. on Friday, August 31.

Absentee ballots are granted to registered voters who are either absent from a community when the polls are open, have a physical disability preventing them from reaching a polling place, or have religious beliefs which prevent them from participating on Election Day. Everett continues to offer a variety of events during summer months s we enter the end of the summer season, the DeMaria administration continues to make sure that the City of Everett offers a variety of programs, events and opportunities for Everett residents.

This summer has been exceptional, from the Independence Day celebration/fireworks to the Swan Street Park Grand Re - Opening, Mayor Carlo DeMaria and his administration have brought the community together to engage and celebrate.

The month of August is no exception. In celebration of back to school, the City will hold the 2nd Annual Back to School Basketball Tournament on Saturday, August 25.

The DeMaria administration aims to provide more activities for young people. Looking to the future, Mayor DeMaria wants to offer similar activities to support young people through to adulthood.

Thursday, August 30 is also an important date to remember, as the second outdoor concert will take place at Wehner Park at 6 p.m. with a performance by Classified.

Classified’s music covers a wide range of classic hits: from the pop-rock of The Beatles and selections from the very foundation of rock and roll from the 50’s, right through to the classic hits of the 60’s, 70’s and 80's.

Twelve to go!

With only 12 days to go to the primary election (Tues., Sept. 4), Rep. Joe McGonagle is leaving his footprints all over the city in his quest for re-election.

Joe has spent hundreds of hours – knocking on doors and ringing doorbells – to get his message to the Stat Smith voters that as your incumbent State Rep. he’s “fighting and delivering for Everett.” And, if you look at his voting record, he has done just that. At the State House he’s known as a no-nonsense representative. He makes Everett proud.

Rep. McGonagle has integrity and compassion.

As we know, one of his opponents, Stat Smith, has a disgusting political record that, in my opinion, rings true of his character and integrity.

Smith spent four months in Federal Prison for absentee ballot fraud; and was banned from running for elected office for five years and has shown not one bit of remorse to the people of Everett for his scurrilous actions. Smith stole two Rep. elections because of greed and arrogance. No one that I know is voting for Smith on Sept. 4 – which is really Election Day because there is no Republican in the Reps. race. Pray tell me, who would vote for a guy who plead guilty to absentee ballot fraud to get the Reps. job twice? Smith is an embarrassment to the city.

In the 2010 state representative primary, incumbent Stat Smith won reelection as the 28th Middlesex State Representative against John Hanlon by only 394 votes in an election in which 778 of the 4,316 ballots (or about 18 percent) were absentee ballots. The election caught the eye of federal investigators, who examined the race and a municipal election the year prior. While the investigation did not produce the string of indictments that some had predicted, Smith was forced to resign as state representative in 2013 after pleading guilty to obtaining absentee ballots for ineligible voters and casting absentee ballots for eligible voters without their knowledge.

After Smith’s resignation, Hanlon was reported by the Globe as saying that he would “never know if I lost fair and square.”

Just how this year’s figure stacks up against previous elections’ is hard to say; the Election Commission stated that they do not keep absentee ballot tallies from previous years on hand. This year’s total will certainly fall below 2010’s 18 percent. However, assuming all requested ballots are returned and turnout resembles the last primaries for state representative in 2014 (4,012 votes cast)

Everett seeks proposals for major mixed-use development in downtown he City of Everett is seeking proposals from qualified master developers for a mixed-use project at the intersection of Broadway and Norwood Street in the heart of Everett Square. The city government has issued a request for proposals for the School Street Municipal Parking Lot. Acceptable uses of the property are as follows: a commercial/residential mixed-use development, a boutique hotel with a restaurant, a performance theater with an open plaza, or other combination of uses that enhance the existing character of Everett Square.

Furthermore, prospective developers may work with adjacent private property owners to assemble a larger redevelopment parcel to accommodate their prospective developments. “We are eager to engage the interest of the development community and hopeful we will have some creative proposals that will help us implement the City’s vision for redevelopment,� said Mayor Carlo DeMaria.

dor, approximately 12 minutes from Boston’s Logan International Airport. The City of Everett is a participant in a regional bike-share program and continues to explore other means for expanding transit and active transportation opportunities.

There have been several recent private capital investments in Everett, including Encore Boston Harbor, enVision Hotel, Huntington Theatre Company Production Center, and Amazon Distribution Center, along with the expansion of several microbreweries and new startups.

The City of Everett invested in several infrastructure upgrades as well as renovating many local parks, playgrounds, schools and other public buildings. In the next several months, the city government will make a series of streetscape improvements along the Broadway corridor.

Those parties interested in obtaining a copy of the proposal should contact the City of Everett’s Procurement Office at bids@ci.everett.ma.us. Proposals are due by 10:00 a.m. on September 27.

Guest speakers will include Massachusetts Office of Elder Affairs Secretary Alice Bonner, PhD, RN, NP, and MVES Executive Director Dan O’Leary. Both bring a wealth of experience in the field of geriatric health care and will talk about elder care and the caregiving resources that are available in Winthrop and surrounding communities.

Dr. Bonner has been a geriatric nurse practitioner caring for older adults for over 28 years. From 2009-2011, she was the Director of the Bureau of Health Care Safety and Quality at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. From 2011-2013 she directed the Division of Nursing Homes in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in Baltimore, M.D. Since June 2015, she has served as Secretary of Elder Affairs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

O’Leary is the Executive Director of Mystic Valley Elder Services, Inc., a nonprofit, state-designated Aging Services Access Point and a federally designated Area Agency on Aging. He runs MVES, which is comprised of 350 staff persons supplemented by 400 active volunteers and a budget of over $78 million.

MVES’s mission is to support the right of elders and adults living with disabilities to live independently with dignity in a setting of their own choice by providing information, advice and access to quality services and resources. Supporting caregivers is a key aspect of helping people to remain as independent as possible.

The agency was founded in 1975 and services over 20,000 individuals annually from the communities of Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Melrose, North Reading, Reading, Revere, Stoneham, Wakefield and Winthrop.

Located in Malden, Mass., MVES provides essential home- and community-based care and resources to elders, adults living with disabilities, and caregivers. OBITUARIES | FROM PAGE 19 Donald E. Whitehouse At 84, of Nashua, NH, and a longtime resident of Everett, MA, passed away on Wednesday evening, August 15, 2018, at Mt. Carmel Rehabilitation Center in Manchester, NH. after living at Ledgewood Bay Assisted Living in Milford, NH, Don was born in Everett on October 2, 1933. He was a graduate of Everett High School and Gordon College. He was a US Army veteran based in Fort Benning, Georgia. Don was married to the love of his life, Nancy, for 58 years, and made their home in Everett, MA before moving to Nashua, NH to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Don was the Business Manager for Lynnfield, Saugus and Natick school systems. He was also the campaign manager for five consecutive victorious Mayoral campaigns in Everett, along with State Senate and Representative campaigns in MA throughout his political career. He was also the Purchasing Agent for the City of Everett. He sat on the Board of Directors at the Eagle Savings Bank, Board of Assessors, Chairman of the Housing Authority, all of Everett and Tri-State Mental Health of Lynn, MA. A devoted husband, father and grandfatherâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;family was everything to Don. Don and Nancy were members of the First Baptist Church in Everett MA for over 50 years. Don was also an ordained minister, choir director, youth director and would take on any opportunity to serve the Lord. Members of his family include three children, Deborah J. Giovinelli and her husband Robert of Nashua, Cindy L. Whitehouse of Nashua, NH, and David T.
