There were 87 domestic assault and batteries reported last year – more than six times as many compared to 2016 (14). And reported crimes involving assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (37) were more than seven times higher last year than over the previous year (5). Those were among the most alarming details of the 2017 Annual Report compiled by the Saugus Police Department. “That’s a pretty big spike that I would have to look into before I could comment on it,� Saugus Police Chief Domenic J. told The Saugus Advocate when asked about the overall assault statistics. “I’d have to find out what’s driving it and make sure it’s an accurate number. If so, I’d want to see where they occurred and what they involved,â€? DiMella said. DiMella said he planned to review what appear to be alarming increases in assault crimes so he could comment on them. He said it might take several days to have some answers. The chief also said he was concerned about other significant increases in several crime statistics in the report that was released this week to The Saugus Advocate: • An increase in reported rapes from two (2016) to eight (last year) • A jump in larcenies, from 194 (2016) to 323 (last year) • A 92 percent increase in credit card fraud, from 27 (2016) to 52 (last year) “I have a female detective – Stacey Forni – who is assigned to sexual assaults and domestic violence ‌ That’s something we don’t like to see go up,â€?,â€?Chief DiMella said.
