Employees at Peter A. Rossetti Insurance Agency, Inc. at 436 Lincoln Ave. and at the Century 21 Real Estate Office (442 Lincoln Ave.) also had their workday cut short when measurements detected “high levels” of natural gas in their buildings. In addition, one nearby home on Ernest Street had to be evacuated, according to Capt. Hughes.

“We were out there for the whole day Monday. There were probably about a dozen businesses affected,” Hughes said.

“The (Cliftondale) Post Office lobby was closed the whole day, but they operated out of the back. Numerous people were inconvenienced due to the evacuation and businesses being closed,” he said.

Vehicle traffic was stopped between Lincoln Avenue and Jackson and Central Streets. All pedestrian access stopped, from Ernest Street to Oak Hill, within the explosive range, according to Hughes. Fire officials evacuated the building well before they ordered National Grid to cut the power, he said. “It doesn’t completely prevent an explosion, but it helps,” Hughes said.

With the gas levels in the three businesses determined to be at unsafe levels, fire officials were concerned about any potential ignition sources: cigarettes, cellphones, phones ringing, emergency power or lighting – anything that can create a spark.

With danger passed by day’s end, Hughes and other fire officials sought to use the situation as public education. “If you smell gas, don’t turn any lights on. Evacuate the house right away. Call 911 from a neighbor’s house … Just leave the house and don’t walk through the building with Monday’s gas leak was the second one this month near the Webster First Federal Credit Union building and the third one overall that that Saugus firefighters responded to in the

town’s Cliftondale section. On June 5, firefighters responded to 448 Lincoln Ave. after National Grid reported readings of gas in the building, and fire officials ordered an evacuation. Traffic was shut down on Lincoln Avenue and in Cliftondale Square.

Firefighters responded to reports of a gas problem on June 12 at Eastern Bank at 446 Lincoln Ave. A caller reported an odor of gas in the front lobby.

The building was evacuated at that time.

Monday’s gas leak had a firefighters’ presence at 448 Lincoln Ave. for more than 18 hours. They didn’t leave the building until 2 a.m. on Tuesday. “We can’t leave the building if there’s gas still inside,” Hughes said.

From Monday morning up until 2 p.m. in the afternoon, Saugus had all three fire companies in Cliftondale. Meanwhile, a company from Wakefield was the firefighter assistance team. And the station was covered by the Melrose, Lynn and Malden Fire Departments.

“We reduced the assignment at about 2 p.m. to one engine, but we rotated companies in because of the heat,” Hughes said.

Once no more gas was detected, Saugus Fire Department cleared the scene at 2 a.m.

Concerns remain in Cliftondale if similar problems will surface in the future.

“It was a difficult leak to find and more difficult to repair …

Some of it is still shut off. They have to engineer a permanent repair,” Hughes said.

How old are the lines? “Nobody can tell me,” Hughes said.

“It’s a steel pipe, so it’s probably old. They use plastic now. Let’s see what happens in 50 to 100 years from now.”

National Grid Gas did not return telephone calls for this story.

The town’s Department of Public Works has to give the utility permission for digging into the town streets to fix the problem National Grid Gas is replacing aging gas lines in various places across the town.

Planning Board Chair Peter A. Rossetti, Jr. discusses Saugusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; future and improving Route 1 Editorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Note: For this week, we sat down with Saugus native and longtime Town Meeting Member Peter A. Rossetti, Jr., who has been on numerous local government bodies and chairs the Planning Board. We asked him what impact major development projects will have on Route 1 and the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overall fiscal health. In addition to his 40 years on Town Meeting, he has served 20 years on the Board of Appeals, been a longtime member of the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational Technical High School Committee, been a selectman and served on many other committees. He is married to Joyce Vecchiarelli. Rossetti earned his Eagle Scout badge as a member of Troop 65 in 1963.

He has three grown-up children: daughters Gabrielle Phipps and Chelsea Rossetti and a son, Peter â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tripâ&#x20AC;? Rossetti III. He said heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been active in town government for many years because he was brought up to value public service and give back to the community. Rossetti said he had intended to go to Medical School when his father asked him to temporarily run Peter A. Rossetti Insurance Agency, Inc. while he had open heart surgery. After running the agency for a year, he decided that he liked working in the insurance field. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Northeastern University. He has a Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Taxation and also Financial Planning and received his law degree from the Massachusetts School of Law. Highlights of this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interview follow.

Q: So what about Route 1?

A: The Chamber of Commerce back in the 70s and 80s was very active concerning Route 1 because the Chamber originally started as the Route 1 Businessmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association and then evolved into the Chamber. At the time, the state was talking about making Route 95 the main access road instead of Route 1. Route 95 would have gone across the marsh and through Lynn and Salem.

It would have been interesting.

What it would have done was make Route 1 kind of a secondary road. Well, there was a big plan afoot to upgrade Route 1, and the upgrade would include coming up from Cutler Circle and making it three lanes wide, straightening it out in some places, rebuilding the overpasses. The problem with the overpasses is that Route 1 is considered what they call a defense highway. To be a defense highway, you have to be able to move military equipment

up and down the road, and the overpasses arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t high enough so that you could move heavy equipment. So the plan was widen the road, straighten it out. Make it three lanes. All of that involved, number one, a lot of money on the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end, and at the time, it was somewhere in the $20 million range.

It involved a lot of land-taking, something in excess of about 12 to 15 acres, and it would have changed the whole nature of Route 1. It would have changed what it is now, where you have a curb cut every 100 feet or so to something more like 128 where you have one or two curb cuts. Over the years, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve even had some people â&#x20AC;Ś and old-time Town Meeting Member Peter Bogdan, who had come up with the idea of putting a second level on Route 1, which would have been an express lane from Boston to the New Hampshire border. Needless to say, it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t happen, thank goodness, but there were all kinds of other plans with the express lane â&#x20AC;&#x201C; having secondary feeder roads.

Q: Right now, what is your assessment as a native of Saugus and somebody who can look closely at this from a planning perspective â&#x20AC;Ś what are the key issues for Route 1, and how do you make it better?

A: Well, the road was designed for traffic back in the 60s. The overpasses were designed for 50-mile-an-hour speed limits because the offramps have to be half that size, and, depending upon

hose of you who followed the National Hockey League of the 60s and 70s remember the Big Bad Bruins and Pie McKenzie. He was a member of two Stanley Cup Champions: 1970 and 1972. He was a favorite of my wife, Polly, who became a member of his official fan club. He resided in Saugus in the white house at the intersection of Westford and Westland in East Saugus. After retirement he moved to Wakefield, but we will not hold that against him. He was born John Albert McKenzie, on December 12, 1937, in High River, Alberta, Canada, and died June 9, 2018, in Wakefield, Mass.

His hockey career began in 1953; at the age of 16, he played in the Western Canadian Junior Hockey League and the following year with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the same league. In 1955 he was with the Calgary Stampeders of the Western Hockey League, the next two seasons with the St. Catharines Teepees of the Ontario Hockey League. He began his National Hockey League (NHL) career with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1958, then the Detroit Red Wings in

the size of the off-ramp, if you make it a higher speed, you need a bigger off-ramp. So the road was designed for much lower amounts of traffic and much slower amounts of traffic. The problem that we have is it tends to back up in Revere at Cutler Circle because they never made that three lanes.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an issue with doing it, only because Rumney Marsh

During his time in the WHA he played for the Vancouver Blazers, Minnesota Fighting Saints, Cincinnati Stingers and the New England Whalers, finishing his professional career in 1979 in Hartford. He was the head coach of the Philadelphia Blazers in 1972-1973 then the Vancouver Blazers in 1973 and 1974. He coached the Berklee Ice Cats of Berklee College of Music in Boston and was the liaison for hockey development at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

Although there is no recycling market in Massachusetts for Styrofoam, Devlin said she is encouraged to learn there is a current movement through the Boston-based group, Environment Massachusetts, to push for a statewide ban on polystyrene foam cups and containers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Nothing we use once should be allowed to pollute our environment for much longer than our own lifetime â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or become toxic incinerated ash,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all focus on the things we can do in our own lives to reduce our use of plastic and styrofoam â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and spread the word to family, neighbors and friends. n June 19, a Brazilian national was sentenced in federal court in Boston in connection with ATM skimming in the Boston area and North Shore. Helisson Benazi de Souza, 38, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge William G. Young to three years in prison and three years of supervised release, and he was ordered to pay $105,880 in restitution.

Benazi de Souza will be subject to deportation proceedings after he completes his sentence.

In March 2018, Benazi de Souza pleaded guilty to one count of using counterfeit access devices (debit cards), one count of possessing 15 or more counterfeit access devices (debit cards), three counts of possessing device-making equipment (ATMskimming devices), one count of illegal transactions with an access device (other persons’ debit cards) and two counts of aggravated identity theft.

Benazi de Souza was part of an ATM-skimming operation in which he stole the debit card

information and personal identification numbers (PINs) of legitimate bank account holders when they used their debit cards at ATMs. Skimming devices made to look like legitimate card access slots were used to record the account information on the magnetic stripes of the debit cards, while secret pinhole cameras recorded the cardholders entering their PINs on the keypads. The stolen account information was then saved on blank plastic cards, including gift cards and hotel key cards, making “clones” of the legitimate debit cards. Benazi de Souza used such cloned cards, and the corresponding PINs, to withdraw thousands of dollars from ATMs in the Metro Boston area in May 2017.

Surveillance video from banks in Saugus and Malden showed an unknown man installing and removing skimming devices and pinhole cameras at the banks’ ATMs. It was later determined that the man in the video was Benazi de Sou-

za. When police searched Benazi de Souza’s car, they discovered thousands of dollars in cash, all in $20 bills. They also found over 200 gift cards and hotel key cards containing small stickers. Benazi de Souza admitted that the numbers written on the stickers were cardholders’ PINs. Benazi de Souza was arrested in May 2017, after law enforcement was alerted by a bank’s fraud investigator. The investigator discovered that someone made a number of withdrawals that day at three ATMs in Lynn from bank accounts that the investigator knew had been compromised.

On June 19, United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling; Stephen A. Marks, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service, Boston Field Office; and Lynn Police Chief Michael A. Mageary made the announcement. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Wichers of Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.

Saugonian receives two years in federal prison for involvement in counterfeit steroid conspiracy (Editor’s Note: This story is based on a press release issued this week by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Massachusetts.)

Saugus man, Brian Petzke, will spend the next two years in federal prison, following his sentencing on June 20 in U.S. District Court for his involvement in a counterfeit steroid–trafficking operation. U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton also sentenced Petzke, 49, to two years of supervised release after he completes his prison term. In February Petzke had pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances.

Also this week, U.S. District Court Judge Allison D. Burroughs sentenced Elizabeth Green, 30, of Fitchburg, to two years of probation. In December 2017, Green pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. Petzke and six others, including Green’s sister, were charged in April 2017 for their roles in the conspiracy.

Reportedly, trom approximately May 2015 until April 12, 2017, the conspirators manufactured steroid products made from raw materials that they purchased overseas and marketed as “Onyx” steroids using “Onyx” labels that were also ordered from overseas suppliers. (Onyx, now owned by Amgen Inc., is a legitimate pharmaceutical company that does not manufacture steroids.) The defendants sold the steroids to customers across the United States using email and social media platforms, collected payment through money remitters, such as Western Union and MoneyGram, and used false identifications and multiple remitter locations to

pick up the proceeds. Some of the defendants laundered proceeds from the steroid sales through Wicked Tan LLC, a tanning business in Beverly, which they owned and operated specifically to launder the proceeds of the steroid operation.

Petzke’s principal roles in the conspiracy were receiving packages containing raw steroid powder, shipping steroids to customers throughout the United States at the direction of codefendants Tyler Baumann and Phillip Goodwin and picking up steroid proceeds from money remitters at the direction of Baumann and Goodwin. Baumann and Goodwin each pleaded guilty and were sentenced in March to 10 years and 130 months in prison, respectively.

Green’s role in the conspiracy was to collect customer payments from money remitters using false identifications and provide those proceeds to another member of the organization. Green retrieved more than $220,000 in customer payments for steroid purchases.

The line that it’s on starts in Lynn and goes over to, I believe it’s Malden, so you get on in Lynn and you eventually go up Route 1; you turn around and go over to Malden; and then by the time you get back to where you started, it’s like a three-hour run, so if you are an employee and you can time it, it might work for you, but don’t buy any frozen foods.

Q: Right now, would you call it a boom that Saugus is in the middle of?

A: Absolutely, a lot of construction going on.

Q: And you got some large residential buildings coming online. You mentioned last week that this new development would be like adding the equivalent of …

A: At least one full precinct.

With the change in zoning, what that did was it opened up a lot of areas on Route 1 that, theoretically, are accessible to Boston that weren’t available before. It would have required zoning changes. In the area where the new 40-B is going, a number of years ago that went to Town Meeting to try to get a zoning change there to allow for apartments, and it was a hard-fought battle and eventually, it happened. But then things changed and people didn’t want to build there.

With the boom that’s going on in and around Boston, and whether it’s due because of the potential of Amazon, whether it’s due to GE coming into town or the casinos or people just wanting to be close to Boston, it’s spreading outward from Boston to Somerville, Malden, Everett and the other inner cities, and now it’s getting to us.

Q: What do you consider the five biggest things going on right now?

A: In Saugus? Essex Landing is one. Avalon is another.

The Walmart was a third. That one’s complete. In that general area, there was also the Wood Springs Suites, which

is 125-unit extended stay hotel. There’s a new project behind Walmart that’s where Golf Town was. That’s going to be in excess of 100 condominium units. There’s the 40-B going in on the other side of Walmart that’s going to be about 300 units, and, there’s talk of two or three others on Route 1 that are all going to be 100 or 200 units – that kind of sized project, and Weylu’s is going to be a big one.

The problem with Weylu’s is its location. It’s very limited access from the highway, and the bulk of the land – 40 acres – 30 of those acres are in Revere, and they are basically not accessible from Revere, so to get to them, you either have to go through Saugus off Route 1 or off some of the side streets off of Essex Street, which is going to be a major problem for the people who live there, because they live on dead-end streets.

Q: Then you got the new school.

A: The new schools – schools plural, because you have the high school-middle school.

You’ve got the charter school.

About two miles away, you have the new voke school that is going to be going in. Wakefield did a new middle school, so surrounding areas are all building up, and that particular intersection on Main Street – Route 1 and some of the other streets – when you put the new elementary school within a mile of all that and the new lower elementary school also within a mile of that, everything is kind of concentrated in a very small area, so 8:00 in the morning and 2:30 in the afternoon, it’s going to be a real difficult situation.

Q: A real nightmare.

A: Yeah.

Q: What do you see in the future? How important is the future of the mall? Square One? A: Well, the mall is evolving.

What we’re trying to do is (this is still in the planning stages) – because it was something between Steve Cole and Krista Leahy. What they were talking about was to make the mall

A: Yep. See if we could bring some of the Voke school departments there and then put out an afternoon program so kids could go to Saugus High and then at 3:00 come over and take courses – the kind of courses – it really couldn’t be the heavy-duty stuff, like carpentry or electricity, but they

detours will be established as required to allow for this work to proceed.

“Ensuring the functionality and safety of the Town’s roadways is always of critical importance,” Crabtree said.

“Safe roadways improve traffic flow and reduce congestion and accidents, which will benefit Town residents and

visitors every day, making it easier for everyone to get to where they need to be.”

Northeastern Conference’s Annual Community Service Awards ~At the Kowloon in Saugus, June 14~

Melissa Nazzaro of Saugus was recognized for commitment to the Saugus Athletic Department. She especially shines when it come to the girls’ soccer and basketball programs, and she also coaches youth basketball and soccer as well as sitting on the Board of Directors of the Saugus Youth Soccer Association.

Ira Novoselsky was presented his Community Service Award by Revere High School (RHS) Athletic Director Frank Shea last Thursday night. Novoselsky was recognized for his 50 years of dedicated service to the Revere sports programs –from water boy at RHS to statistician of the RHS football program and operating the scoreboard as well.

Novoselsky also refereed college men’s and women’s basketball for 35 years, was National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA and worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for over 30 years.

The Malden Golden Tornado Club was recognized for its strong support of Malden High School’s student athletes, by way of scholarships and awards. This year the Golden Tornadoes celebrated their 65th anniversary of helping students.

Superintendent Dave DeRuosi told a recent SFC gathering that 35-40% of kids in Saugus receive free or reduced cost meals and are considered to be in the lower socioeconomic/high needs categories. Their families struggle to provide basic necessities for them, including regular meals. If a child is hungry, they cannot learn in school.

PATROLMAN | from page 1 They gather in a park named in his honor, Officer Vitale Memorial Park on Ballard Street in Saugus, on a Saturday -- sandwiched in between his birthday (June 14) and the anniversary of his tragic death in the line of duty (June 18) -- to honor him with the memories which have grown precious with the passage of time.

But it’s not just a day of remembrance for the slain officer who pulled over a 19-yearold driver for blowing through a stop sign and then was dragged more than 1,000 feet to his death. Or pondering of what might have been had the teen not sped off when Vitale tried to arrest him after a background check revealed he was wanted on other outstanding motor vehicle charges.

The hope and the highlight of the day for the Vitale family is the presentation of scholarships to several students from Saugus, Revere -- where Vitale still has family roots -- and other area communities.

Last Saturday -- on the eve of the 33rd anniversary of late Saugus patrolman’s death -the Officer Harold L Vitale Memorial Fund awarded six $1,000 scholarships to six local high school students from Saugus, Revere, Wakefield, and Winthrop at a reception in the park.

“For our family to have the honor of coming to the beautiful park named after Harold for over 20 years and remember him for how he lived, not how he died is very satisfying for us,” said Les Vitale, one of Harold’s brothers and President of the Memorial Fund.

“To enjoy this day with these kids and their families on the eve of Father’s Day is really special,” Les Vitale said “His premature death meant he missed a lot, like his own children’s graduations, marriages and the birth of his grandchildren, but we carry on for him,” he said.

Last Saturday marked the 24th consecutive year the Fund has granted scholarships.

Les Vitale said his family is “extremely grateful,” considering that few organizations are fortunate enough to host events like this for more than 20 years. Officer Vitale would have turned 75 on June 14.

This year’s recipients are: • Ricardo Alberto Martinez-Moretta, of Saugus High School.

• Twin sisters MacKenzie Lee Cunningham and Madison Lyn Cunningham, both of Revere High School.

• Jack Wayne Elam, of Revere High School.

• Samuel Matthew Zichella, of Winthrop High School.

• Michael Chankhour, of Wakefield High School A fund that keeps helping students When the fund formed in 1992. Two years later, the Vitale family began awarding scholarships. They gave out two scholarships of $250 apiece in the first year.

Over the years, the number of awards and dollars have grown -- to six or seven scholarships of $1,000 apiece.

Over the past 24 years, the fund has awarded close to 130 totaling more than $130,000, according to the family.

“The Vitale Memorial Fund has been wildly successful and has exceeded our expectations,” Les Vitale said.

“Given the rising cost of tuition and with the struggling the economy, families are suffering and searching to find ways to pay for college, we’re happy to play a small part in reducing that burden,” he said.

Eileen Vitale, the wife of the late officer, looks upon the memorial fund set up in honor of her husband as a way to show her gratitude and the family’s appreciation for the help and support she received soon after her husband’s tragic death.

“It’s a great, proud way to keep Harold’s memory alive,” Mrs. Vitale said.

“We’re also able to continue our support of victim advocate organizations who reached out to help us back in 1985.

Organizations like the National C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors) the N.E. Chapter C.O.P.S. and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) receive financial support from us each year,” the widow said.

“This year we made a special gift to them to cover the cost of having Sgt. Sean Gannon’s name inscribed on the Memorial walls. Doing that is really important to us and we continue to make an impact,” she said.

Town announces reopening of CHaRM Center Recycling Drop-Off site The Town of Saugus announced that the community’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) site will be open to residents on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The site is located behind the Department of Public Works at 515 Main St. There is no pre-registration or fee required to enter the site; however, proof of residency is required.

At the CHaRM center, the Town will accept the same recycling items that can be placed outside for curbside collection each week, such as paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and glass containers. Additional acceptable items include TVs and computers (up to three per year per address); bulky rigid plastic items, such as Little Tikes toys, laundry baskets, Rubbermaid trash barrels, five-gallon pails, etc.; car tires up to 22” (for a fee of $3); books; and textiles, such as clothing, bedding, pocketbooks, belts and shoes.

Plastic bags are not permitted. Residents are kindly asked to empty recyclables out of any plastic bags and to remove the bags from the site.

Some upcoming library events There’s always something going on at the Saugus Public Library. Here are a few events to check out: • The library is offering discount passes to see the Lowell Spinners at family-friendly Edward A. LeLacheur Park (Capacity 5,030) in Lowell. These passes, like all of the library’s discount passes, are funded by the New Friends of the Saugus Public Library.

The Spinners are a Short-Season Single-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. They will play 76 games in 79 days (38 home, 38 road) this season. Their last home game is on September 3. Home Games begin at 7:05 p.m., Monday-Friday, and at 5:05 p.m., Saturday & Sunday.

The Library offers a dated voucher for most Spinners home games. Each voucher allows patrons to purchase up to six tickets at 50% off the regular price (For example: A $7 Reserved Ticket would cost $3.50). Vouchers will be able to be reserved online (sauguspubliclibrary.org) or at the Library and can be picked up in-person at the Library. Only one voucher is available for each home game; first come, first served. You could use that as a hub.

Q: Like for work-study?

A: Yeah. Exactly. That way, a lot of kids who go to the Voke if they want to learn a particular trade – other things that we teach up there could be done outside. It doesn’t have to be that intense. You don’t need to have an automotive shop or a welding shop.

Q: Have the mall people been receptive to this?

A: We haven’t gotten to the

point of speaking to them on it. We have talked in general about it a couple of times, and they seem to think it was a good idea, but again, I think they’re a little concerned about the future of the mall and how it’s going.

Q: Malls in general are facing kind of a death knell or weeding out process, and they’ve got to evolve or disappear.

A: You know, they have to shift from just being a clothing store. They have to be more than that. There has to be a reason to go there, and they can’t just be from 10 until 8. They have to be different hours. They have to be where you can buy things. The future of the malls is changing.

what’s the biggest challenge facing Saugus from a planning perspective?

A: The problem is that they didn’t only look at planning.

When some of these projects came in … not just them, but the shopping center and the high school on Route 1 … things like that, they didn’t only look 20 or 30 years down the road on what was going to happen. The concept of having McDonald’s on Route 1 – it’s not a bad idea, but it’s not the best, efficient use of the property, because it’s a single-story cement block building that doesn’t add a whole lot of value, and it takes up a significant amount of space. But in a single area, you could put up a fourstory, five-story, 10-story building and have space around it and incorporate things that would be something to draw the people. And if you have activities for the people, whether it’s restaurants or whatever, for them to go through, it sort of feeds on that synergy.

Q: As far as the specific challenge, what might that be?

A: Long-range planning is something that I think is vital.

Q: So what’s happening with the Planning Department losing both people …

A: That hurts. That hurts, and

it’s very difficult because urban planning has been around for 20-odd years and maybe longer, but it’s one thing to learn it in the classroom, and it’s another thing to be able to put it together in the real world. It takes a little bit of time for people to get seasoned and to understand that, which – Krista was great, but it was very frustrating for her because if she had gone in as a number two or three in the department, that would have been great if she had a Bob Luongo to look to and say, “This is how we should go about doing it.” That would be wonderful, but when you just kind of take someone and throw them in the middle of it and say, “Okay, it’s up to you, go get a grant; do something,” what do I do or where do I go?

We’ve had several pretty good planners. We had one whose name was Paula Newcomb, and she was instrumental in getting Lobsterman’s Landing and doing some of the waterfront areas. Then we had Jean Delios, and she is Paul Delios’ wife and she was excellent. She got us some very large grants that helped and did some significant planning. But again, getting the right person and giving them the opportunity to do things takes a lit-

pick them up. Details are being worked out this summer so that the program can start up in September.

If you are interested in being a part of this effort, let us know. Working together, we

The people who use the community just as a pass-through, from somewheres north of us to get into Boston and out – they want to be able to get their coffee and pick up dinner on the way home, or whatever. It’s difficult when you have to weight what you give your citizens, what do you give the commuters? Is the revenue you are going to get from the commuters sufficient to put a burden on the citizens?

So it’s something difficult to try and do.

Q: As far as the volume of the tax revenue coming in from the town …

PATROLMAN | from page 15 Yarmouth Officer Gannon -- who was promoted to sergeant posthumously -- was the latest Massachusetts police officer killed in the line of duty. Gannon and his K-9 partner, Nero, were shot on April 12 while police were serving an arrest warrant at a Marstons Mills home on Cape Cod. Gannon, an eight year veteran on his department, was shot in the head and later died of his wounds. Nero got shot in the face and neck and is recovering after emergency surgery.

Thomas Latanowich, 29, was charged with murder. Police had gone to the house to arrest him for violating his probation from a 2009 case involving multiple firearms charges.

A week and a half before the shooting, Latanowich had fled from a state trooper who had tried to pull him over near the Chelsea-Revere line, according to police.

About this year’s winners A key part of the scholarship ceremony is when it’s revealed why the student was selected.

They’re usually the child of a parent in law enforcement or share a personal connection to the Vitale family.

Officer Vitale was killed in the line of duty in the early morning hours of June 18, 1985 while attempting to make an arrest when he was dragged over 1000 feet to his death. Officer Vitale was 42 at the time and married to his wife Eileen where he lived in Ipswich with 3 children, Paul, Michelle and JacLyn. Officer Vitale’s badge # 17 was retired upon his death. Q: Do you see, with all of this growth, do you see the citizens talking about â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it kind of goes in cycles â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the East Side Fire Station? Do you see that as coming online? Maybe as linkage with some of these developments? You are going to get slower response time with more traffic.

A: Yes. Will it happen? Yes, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to happen. Will it happen all at once? Probably not.

What we were trying to do was set up some kind of fund.

If a developer said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to put up something,â&#x20AC;? there would be some kind of donation into a fund. That donation when you have five significant developers, could be significant.

A: Yes, on a regular basis. The building is one thing, and we voted to build a third fire station and that passed.

A: Saugus is kind of at a transition point right now. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re seeing a lot of growth, which is a good thing because it brings in revenue. Now, Saugus does have relatively low
