Lack of demolition A Sunday Brunch to remember notification questioned By Tara Vocino

A

resident and councillors expressed their concern about watching a vacant commercial yard being demolished on Thursday without full notification during Monday’s City Council meeting at City Hall. Niko Kostopoulos, of 111 Mill St., said 727 Revere Beach Pkwy., a 4,000 square foot, 80-year-old building, was demolished without neighbors or councillors knowing; the original plan was to simply add a floor to the building. He said 311 operator Allan Fitzmaurice said letters were sent out; however, the special permit was granted the day before. “It’s a well-kept neighborhood,” said Kostopoulos, who is concerned about the reported glass, dust, cloud of smoke and cinder blocks affecting residents and pets. “I’m not sure how they got away with this.” Kostopoulos explained that he should have been notified either by mail or by newspaper so that he and his neighbors could prepare by closing

the windows. When asked why the building was demolished, Kostopoulos said that the existing foundation could no longer support the building. He went on to say that the owner was Bob Ianniciello. Ward 1 City Councillor Joanne McKenna said she would have notified her constituents, but since she didn’t know, she couldn’t. She said some of her councillor colleagues were notified of some of the details. Her motion asked that the Building and Fire Departments develop a courtesy public notification plan for residents and councillors relative to the issuance of demolition permits. “I simply ask for a courtesy call next time so I can let my residents know,” McKenna said. Other councillors expressed their concern for not knowing all of the details. Councillorat-Large Daniel Rizzo said it’s common sense to notify abutters, and that it’s beyond his imagination how it could slip through the cracks. For Councillor-at-Large
