Even so, a spring incident which didn’t involve Nalen – not the incident involving a player practicing in his underwear – is the reason why school officials initiated “false and fraudulent accusations” and eventually suspended Nalen, the ex-Sachems coach alleged in his five-page complaint filed in Essex County Superior Court.

On Tuesday, a day after that lawsuit was served on school officials, Belmonte Middle School Principal Myra Monto walked into Nalen’s classroom where he teaches computer science and handed him a ter-

Nalen, who was beginning his second year as head coach, was suspended last month after allegations that he had ordered one of his players to practice in his underwear as part of a hazing incident. An investigation by Saugus Police cleared Nalen of any criminal misconduct after determining there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the

on trumped-up charges. We alleged in the complaint that there had been activity taken by the administration to go after my client for an incident that happened in the spring.

This was an incident that had to do with another student, but didn’t have anything to do with my client,” Castano said.

He continued, “They fired him [from the coaching job] in the middle of class. Quite frankly, he didn’t know what was going on. This is just the continuation of the personal vendetta they are waging against my client. The police investigation already clears him, and yet he continues to take a hit on his reputation because of these unfounded allegations.”

Threats from school officials?

The lawsuit filed by Nalen seeks reinstatement to his position as head coach. A hearing was scheduled for yesterday in Essex County Superior Court in Newburyport on that motion.

But even if the judge denies the motion for reinstatement, Castano said, his client plans to continue with the lawsuit, seeking unspecified monetary damages “for emotional distress and harm as well as pain and suffering.”

The court complaint refers to an incident in which DeRuosi contacted Nalen about one of his players who “had an issue with the school.” The superintendent called Nalen into a meeting which was also attended by Saugus High School Principal Michael Hashem and Nalen’s union representative.

Nalen received a text from the coach of Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School asking him to call Saugus School Committee Chair Jeannie Meredith after Nalen didn’t contact the player or his mother like the superintendent had requested, according to the lawsuit.

Nalen called Meredith and left a message.

“School Committee Chair Jeannie Meredith call[ed] the Plaintiff back and said ‘she was a private investigator and she knew things about the Plaintiff that Plaintiff didn’t know she knew,’” the lawsuit claimed.

“Plaintiff asked her if that was a threat. She said ‘you need to make the right choice,’” it continued. “Chair Jeannie Meredith then said ‘I know you don’t make as much as you should and we can have that conversation down the line.’”

Nalen said he emailed DeRuosi for a meeting to discuss his conversation with Meredith, and he also complained about her conduct.

“About a week later Plaintiff was called into Defendant DeRuosi’s office and was accused of defaming the character of Saugus School Committee Chair Jeannie Meredith,” according to Nalen’s court complaint.

“Plaintiff’s union representative told me Defendant DeRuosi wanted Plaintiff’s resignation,” it continued.

The court complaint also mentions that Nalen showed DeRuosi the text message he received from the coach at Northeast Vocational.

“Defendant DeRuosi said he would be looking into it but Plaintiff never heard about the incident again,” the court complaint noted.

The Aug. 17 incident leads to suspension Football camp began for Saugus High on Aug. 17. Nalen said he explained to the players before their first practice about a policy intended to make players look like a team: They are allowed to wear black, red or white/gray shorts only.

If a player shows up in different colored shorts, he or she is asked to go to the locker room to change into the appropriate colored shorts or to wear football pants supplied by the school.

Nalen noted in his lawsuit that 17 players were asked to go back to the locker room and change into appropriate colored shorts during the first two weeks of practice. “None of the coaches saw a player come out in underwear or they would have been asked to go back to the locker room,” the court complaint said.

“On August 17th, a player

came back onto the field in boxers or compression shorts.

On that day that player returned to the field wearing what appeared to be appropriate colored shorts that did not cause any of the coaching staff to notice any problem. The student participated in the rest of the practice without incident,” the lawsuit continued.

Eleven days later, on Aug. 28, Nalen said, the superintendent informed him of the allegations and “told me to keep quiet.” DeRuosi suspended Nalen on Aug. 30, “pending an investigation.”

“On Aug. 30th Plaintiff received a text from the player in question saying that neither his mom nor he complained to the school but rather the school called them and told them they had to complain,” Nalen alleged in his court complaint.

Nalen said he and Attorney Castano went to the Saugus Police Station on Sept. 6 “voluntarily” and gave them a recorded statement. The coach said he also brought videotapes of the practice in question. “These videos and pictures conclusively show that there is no player out on the field that looks like they are in their underwear and they further show that no hazing took place,” according to the lawsuit.

“Despite this evidence plaintiff was not allowed to coach in the opening game on September 7th. On September 11th the police completely exonerated the [coach] and gave the report to the Defendant Saugus Public Schools and Defendant DeRuosi. Plaintiff still has not been reinstated as coach despite being cleared of all wrongdoing in the ‘independent’ police investigation,” the lawsuit continued. “Plaintiff is being targeted by the Defendants as retribution for not backing them up during the issue with the player in the spring. There is no valid reason for the Plaintiff to still be on suspension.”

“Failure to supervise” On Tuesday, Nalen learned the official reason for his dismissal was “failure to supervise” in the case of the incident of allowing a student to practice in his underwear, according to Attorney Castano.

“Again, this is something that my client was cleared of by the police investigation,” Castano said in an interview Wednesday. “And now we’re learning that ‘the independent investigation’ the superintendent is referring to was his own investigation. How can he say that’s independent?”

There was no information available at press time on the outcome of yesterday’s court hearing in Newburyport.

Boy Scout Troop 61’s Scoutmaster discusses 90th birthday party his unit has planned for Sunday Editor’s Note: For this week’s interview, we sat down in Kane’s Donuts to talk with Boy Scout Troop 61 Scoutmaster Kevin M. Wildman about his troop’s plans to celebrate turning 90 years old with a special birthday party set for Sunday. Wildman, a Saugus native and 1989 Saugus High School graduate, earned his Eagle Scout badge in 1989 with the troop he has worked with as an adult leader for more than 25 years – the last four as scoutmaster. He was honored with the prestigious Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award in 2015. For the last two years, he has served as master of the William Sutton Lodge A.F.& A.M. of Saugus. He has been a mason for a decade. He has been employed in the maintenance gas division of National Grid for 15 years. He and his wife, Colleen, live in Saugus with their two children: Megan, 17, a senior at Saugus High School; and Colin, 15, a sophomore at Saugus High School. Some highlights of this week’s interview follow.

Q: Kevin, please tell me a little bit about the big event planned for Sunday, when Saugus Boy Scout Troop holds a special birthday party.

Q: How many people are you ing for a lot of people who were part of the troop years ago and expecting?

A: We’re guessing – and it’s right up to the current boys who are here now. And we can a pretty big guess – we’re hopmeet and swap stories – see ing for 75 people. We’re trying good friends that we haven’t seen in years.

oseph “Dennis” Gould of the United Parish Food Pantry estimates that “Healthy Students–Healthy Saugus” will be able to provide food to 75 needy elementary schoolchildren in town when the project begins within a few weeks.

Gould, who has been dubbed by organizers of the local food initiative as “the inspiration” for the program, said he believes there are many more Saugus schoolchildren out there who are going without adequate and balanced meals.

“There seems to be a stigma for people signing up for the food pantry,”Gould told a crowd of two dozen people in the auditorium of the Belmonte Middle School Wednesday night as he and two other organizers of the community-wide venture detailed their strategy for addressing the problem of children going hungry in Saugus.

“We have enough money for four or five weeks to kick this up,” Gould said, referring to cash donations that the project, which is also known as HS², has received.

Gould told the audience he has been working with the homeless and “food insecurity” issues for 40 years.

“I saw the kids coming to school Monday morning coming in hungry – and that shouldn’t be happening in Saugus … We want to tie this closely to the food pantry. If the child is not getting food, the family probably isn’t either,” he said.

Saugus Public Schools Superintendent Dr. David DeRuosi, Jr., another organizer, credited Gould with persuading him to get Saugus Public Schools involved in the project.

UCC of Saugus and president of the Saugus Faith Community, said Gould – in his work at the food pantry – has been working closely with several churches and members of the town’s faith community on the project. Rev. Leahy noted that “an assembly line of volunteers” is working at six churches being used as food packing sites to receive the food and get it ready for distribution.

“This is really bringing the whole town together – all working together for the betterment of the kids in the Saugus school system,” she said.

Whitsons Food Service, the food service provider for Saugus Public Schools, has also been working with the food pantry, the faith community and the school system in organizing the initiative. Whitsons has compiled a list of nutritionally balanced foods which the program is referring to when seeking food donations. The company also plans to pick up food donations collected from the public at six church sites where grocery bags are filled up with food by the volunteers.

Our annual Pumpkin Patch begins!

Come on down to help unload the tractor trailers on Saturday, Sept. 29 at a.m. and Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Congregational Church UCC in Saugus. Adults and school-age kids are needed to help us unload our two tractor trailer loads of beautiful pumpkins and gourds from New Mexico. This is such a great family event! Students can receive credit for community service hours by helping out at the Patch, and local businesses can fulfill their pledges to do community outreach. After unloading, we will be open seven days a week selling pumpkins until Halloween Day. Many people like to pose their kids (and even their pets) for photos among the bright orange pumpkins. We also like them to send us the pix so we can post on Facebook (no tagging allowed).

Proceeds from the Patch help fund a yearly $500 scholarship for any graduating Saugus senior high school student who is continuing on to further education. Applications with the criteria listed are available from the church office.

Police probe Main Street drive-by shooting incident

T

he Saugus Police Department is investigating an apparent drive-by shooting that happened Tuesday (Sept.18) on Main Street, ac-

cording to Interim Police Chief Ronald Giorgetti.

In a press release issued by his office this week, Giorgetti said police were dispatched

at about 6:37 p.m. due to a report of shots fired in the area of 137 Main St. Officers responded immediately and after arriving, they located shell casings in the roadway and secured the scene. Nobody was struck by the gunshots, and there were no injuries as a result of the incident, police said.

“Following an on-scene investigation, officers learned

that a suspect riding in the rear of a vehicle travelling on Main Street fired several shots out of the vehicle’s rear passenger side window,” police said in the press release. “The vehicle, which is described as a blue Chevy sedan with three occupants inside, then fled the scene.”

“This incident is under active investigation by the Saugus Po-

lice Criminal Investigations Division, and officers are working to locate the vehicle and its occupants. Massachusetts State Police also responded to the scene to assist in the search for the vehicle.”

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or observed a similar motor vehicle in the area is asked to call Saugus Police at 781-941-1183.

30-plus years – probably close to 35 years as a scoutmaster – which is unheard of.

Q: That’s the guy from Connecticut?

A: Yeah, he’s now living in Connecticut. But 35 years is practically unheard of. Most of the scoutmasters are three, four or five years kind of thing, then when their sons age out, they move on. So, to stick around the program that long is just unbelievable.

Q: And he had a bunch of Eagle Scouts?

A: Yeah, he had, I believe 33 Eagle Scouts under his name during his time. So, that’s just a phenomenal record. That just shows what kind of leader he is.

Q: Was he an Eagle Scout himself?

A: He was not an Eagle Scout himself. He did the scouting program, I believe, but just got caught up in the end with everything that distracts you from earning the award. But he got back into the program when he had a nephew that was in the program, and he went down there as his uncle and joined in to take care of the nephew and ended up becoming a leader. And he was really dedicated to it, apparently. And then he brought his son into the program and went through the program with his son, and he stayed on after his son turned 18.

Q: Did his son become Ea-

gle?

A: His son did not become an Eagle, which is kind of ironic, but then his grandson joined and his grandson did achieve the Eagle Scout Award.

Q: Under his watch or your watch?

A: Under his watch. So, that was cool. Jim has done so much for the program at keeping everybody involved and being such a great leader. And what he’s taught all of us over these 30-plus years has been tremendous. So, when he retired [from being a scoutmaster], we decided to make him an honorary Eagle Scout of the troop, because he is certainly worthy of the award. He just didn’t do that back in the days prior to when he was 18 years old.

Q: Is he going to be at the party on Sunday?

A: Yes, Jim will be at the party on Sunday. He plans to come from Connecticut. He wants to see a lot of people, and a lot of people want to see him.

Q: In its heyday, how many scouts were there in Troop 61?

A: I would say – the heyday that I was probably part of, back in the 80’s – there were 60 to 65 boys in the troop.

Q: So, was Troop 61 one of the biggest in town?

A: I would say so, just from what I heard when we had 60plus scouts. And there were

Q: How many people in the troop right now – Boy Scouts?

A: Right now we have 10 boys. Like I tell people, I don’t have a lot of boys – but there are 10 good ones.

Q: How many Eagles in that group of 10?

A: Well, we have three potential out of that group of 10 right now that are working on it [the Eagle badge]. They are all Life Scouts and they are all in their last phases of working on their Eagle Scout public service projects and advancing their last few merit badges. Hopefully, within the next four or five months or so, we’ll have three more Eagle Scouts to celebrate.

Q: How many Eagles in the history of the troop?

A: So, the troop has 59 Eagles in its history, which is a really fantastic number.

Q: So, how many scoutmasters have you had in the troop’s history?

A: I think there’s a plaque with their names on it, but I really can’t answer that. But I know when I was a Boy Scout in the troop, we had Jim Vernelli, who was a scoutmaster for

abrina Panetta of Saugus participated as a state finalist in the National American Miss Southern New England Pageant that was held July 2123 at the Sheraton Springfield

Monarch Place Hotel in Springfield, Mass. This is the eighth year that she has been chosen as a state finalist.

Panetta, who competed in the teen division, scored in

the Queen’s Court Top 5 at the pageant, a prestigious honor.

Saugus Iron Works National Historic Site will host vintage Cadillac car show next month (Editor’s Note: The following information is from a press release issued by the New England Region Cadillac & LaSalle Club.)

T

he New England Region Cadillac & LaSalle Club (NERCLC) and Saugus Boy Scout Troop 62 will be sponsoring a vintage Cadillac car show at the Saugus Iron Works on October 7 (rain date: October 21).

Specifically for this event, the Saugus Iron Works will be making certain features of the facility operational during a tour that will commence at 11 a.m.

This event is open to the public and admission is free.

The event’s theme is to showcase the creative genius and innovation embodied in the de-

sign and engineering of these vintage automobiles that relied on the use of “American steel.”

That same theme – innovation and genius – is a focal point of the Saugus Iron Works. No one resource contributed more to the prewar and postwar success of America than American steel.

The birthplace of this industry was the Saugus Iron Works.

A 1954 Cadillac will be displayed in a distinctive location of the parking area as 1954 represents the opening of the Saugus Iron Works to the public.

Vintage pre- and postwar Cadillacs and LaSalles dating back to the 1920’s will be present.

At 2:42 p.m., Saugus Police, Fire and Armstrong Ambulance were dispatched to 19 Pranker Road for a report that a resident had been shot, and that another resident was barricaded inside. The caller, who called Saugus Police’s nonemergency phone number, suggested that they had committed

the shooting, and threatened to open fire on responding officers.

“I commend the timely and measured response of our officers to this incident,” Chief Giorgetti said.“I also want to thank our partner agencies for their support.”

This incident remains under investigation by the Saugus Police Department.

“It was the scariest experience I’ve ever encountered,” Balesteri told The Saugus Advocate Wednesday, as she stood out in her yard at the intersection of Victoria and Stanton Streets.

“It was pouring rain, and all of a sudden, it got so dark – pitch black. Everything was very quiet and all of a sudden, we heard this ‘whoosh’ and everything happened,” she recalled of the storm that officials of the National Weather Service have

classified as a microburst.

“The trees were hit, barrels were going everywhere with trash blowing all over the place.

It was scary. But after going through this, I can really sympathize with the people in North Carolina who went through so much more,” she said.

Shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the wrath of Hurricane Florence – which ravaged North Carolina, South Carolina and several other Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states – left its

mark on Saugus. A storm system moving at an estimated wind speed of 70 to 75 miles per hour rumbled through the Riverside Park area of Saugus, with a maximum path width of 250 yards and the length of a mile. The storm moved with such fury through Riverside Cemetery and Riverside Park that people wondered if the town had been hit by a tornado.

assess the damage and investigate the cause. “They determined that a microburst, or straight-line winds, was the cause of downed trees and tree limbs, a few of which fell against homes,” the National Weather Service office in Norton wrote in a preliminary summary of the survey team’s investigation.

“The damage was not the result of a tornado,” the survey team concluded. “Although trees, tree limbs and some wires were downed across many parts of Saugus, the most concentrated area stretched from the western part of Riverside Cemetery eastward to between Stocker Playground and Lincoln Avenue.”

neous 911 calls for assistance for what we now know was a Microburst to come through a section of town,” according to Saugus Fire Department Lt. Damian Drella.

“All three fire companies (Engines 1 & 3 and Ladder-1) and along with all on duty office staff C-1 & 2 (chief and deputy chief) and K-1 & 2 (fire prevention Captains) all responded to calls,” Drella wrote in an email to The Saugus Advocate.

“A small fire broke out at 70 Lincoln Ave. where a large tree limb fell, pulling the electrical service off the house causing a fire. A large tree fell on Ballard Street, bringing down primary power lines causing them to burn in the street,” he said.

Ballard Street was closed for an extended time, and the area was evacuated until National Grid could secure the power.

Several trees fell on Riverside Park; one landed on a house causing minor damage, and the others broke utility poles and brought wires and limbs down on cars and the street, according to Lt. Drella.

“On Rt-1 North @ the 846 Broadway Mobile home park which is a known Low lying area, flash flooding occurred bringing about 5 feet of water around the entrance area to the property, 3 residences were affected,” Lt. Drella wrote.

“The Fire Department used gas powered pumps and was able to bring down the water level to normal in a few hours, No relocation was needed or injuries reported. Residents do report that they will have water damage to their properties,” he said. “Riverside Cemetery on Winter Street has several tree and limbs brought down, one Headstone was reported to be toppled over and gravesite flags and flowers were damaged. Some [of] the cemetery roads were blocked by debris and the cemetery department was working on clearing and repairs.”

share some of his past experiences. And I’m sure I will speak as the current scoutmaster.

Q: So, what does it mean to be, like, nine decades old?

A: You know, the scouting program is fantastic. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t be part of it. And to me, it’s great. I started scouting when I was eight years old, and it’s really had a tremendous impact on my life. That’s why I still do it – and I do it for all these kids. The difference it makes in the lives of these kids is unbelievable. You can see it in all of these kids. They develop through the years. Not only do they develop camping skills, which is a big part of scouting, but they are developing char-

acter. They’re developing citizenship and respect for the country and the American flag and things like that – family values. When these kids grow up and tell stories when they turn 18 and they turn into adults, some of them go into the military. If you go into the military, you get an automatic pay raise just for being an Eagle Scout.

One guy went into the military and got a promotion because he was an Eagle Scout. All he talked about was scouting. He didn’t even talk about his job.

Q: These scouts get skills for life by setting out to get the Eagle Badge.

We have 10 scouts and I think the other troop [Troop 62] has about 20 or so. So, we still do what we can do for the kids who want to learn and participate in scouting and still have a good time at it, but society is changing.

Q: Are there any special events planned for the birthday party? Like is there going to be a big cake?

A: Yes, we’re going to have some food – cold-cut trays to make sandwiches and we’ll have pizzas. Again, the idea is to grab a little something – come in and grab a sandwich and a slice of pizza while you are talking to other people. There’s no sit-down dinner. We didn’t want formal. We didn’t want everybody to have to be at a certain time. We are planning on doing a little cakecutting ceremony at 2:30, and we’re hoping to have an award from the Town or state Rep. Donald Wong – two things that are out there – I’m not sure if they are going to pan out because of the lateness on our invitations. We’re something from [legislative and town commendations]. We’re hoping to have Jim Vernelli speak and

Sachems fall short in comeback bid

ith their coaching situation still in a state of uncertainty, the Saugus Sachems football team fell behind by three points last Friday night against the Northeast Metro Golden Knights in Wakefield. But similar to their effor t the previous week at Amesbury, the Sachems rallied to make the contest close before dropping a 2618 decision.

Trailing 26-6 early in the final quarter, quarterback Mason Nickolas connected with Christian Correia on TD passes of 36 and 15 yards. Saugus was unsuccessful on both point-after tries. In fact, they were unable to muster the PAT following all three of their touchdowns, which would have closed the gap even more. Saugus advanced into Northeast territory on its final possession but the drive stalled on an interception.

All told, Nickolas threw for 268 yards, completing 10 of 19 passes in the process.

Receivers Correia (five receptions for 134 yards) and James Moise (three catches for 103 yards) both eclipsed the century mark in passcatching yardage. Moise was the recipient of a 50-yard scoring strike from Nickolas in the second period. “[ The comeback effor t] shows the heart the team has to never give up and keep fighting,” interim head coach Mike Mabee told the press after the contest. “They really stepped it up and kept fighting for the rest of the game.”

Mabee was the middle school head coach entering this season. He is filling the position vacated by Anthony Nalen, who was placed on administrative leave back on Aug. 30, pending a police investigation into an alleged hazing incident. Nalen was cleared of any criminal violation last week but is still awaiting a decision by the school administration on whether or not he is reinstated as head coach. Nalen’s assistant coaches have

been let go, according to reports, while members of Mabee’s middle school coaching staff are assisting at the varsity level.

On Friday, the powerful running game of Northeast produced some time-consuming drives. All four of its scores came via the rush. The Sachems were looking up at a 14-6 disadvantage at halftime. The Golden Knights extended their lead to 20 with two second-half touchdowns.

“They had some big, bruising backs. Their [offensive] line handled us a bit,” Mabee obser ved. “Our guys toughened up in the second half. We moved a few guys around. We did a better job with that.”

Saugus, now 0-2 on the season, plays its home opener at Stackpole Field this Saturday (scheduled 1 p.m. kickoff ) against the Salem Witches, who have star ted out strong at 2-0, outscoring opponents 50-19 over their first two games.

Saugus Fire Department sets Open House for next month The Saugus Fire Department welcomes local families to a free Open House on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Open House, which is sponsored by Papa Gino’s, is aimed at teaching families fire safety and prevention practices. The Saugus Fire Department Open House will be held at 27 Hamilton St. in Saugus.

This Open House commemorates National Fire Safety Month (October). Participants will receive safety tips, such as “stop, drop and roll,” learn how to plan escape routes, and how to crawl safely through a smoke-filled room. In addition, Papa Gino’s, the Dedham, Mass.

–based pizza chain, will provide free pizza and children’s fire safety coloring sheets at the Open House.

“This event allows us to reach out to the community and arm local families with fire safety tips and procedures,” Fire Chief Michael Newbury said.

“Our open house allows families to get together and prepares them to react if a fire does start,” he said.

Papa Gino’s is celebrating its 24th anniversary of sponsoring fire safety open houses throughout New England to encourage families to learn about fire safety. For the past 24 years, Papa Gino’s has sponsored open houses throughout New England, helping to educate more than two million people about fire prevention and safety. During the month of October, Papa Gino’s will provide customers with fire prevention coloring sheets and certificates for kids. The 11th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk/Run to benefit those in need who reside in the Lynn area is set for Saturday, Sept. 29, rain or shine. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 9:15 a.m. from St. John’s parking lot at 174 Humphrey St. in Swampscott. The Lynn District Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul – which covers Saugus – is organizing the event.

SVdP is one of the largest charitable organizations in the world.

Last year, the Lynn District of SVdP raised $14,122 to help people in need throughout the area, regardless of religion, race or national origin, according to a media advisory sent to The Saugus Advocate.

Attention Precinct 3 voters!

With the ongoing construction at Chestnut Woods Rehabilitation & Health Care Center (73 Chestnut St.), there will be a temporary relocation of the Precinct 3 polling location to the Italian American Club at 1 Beachview Ave., the current polling location for Precinct 10 voters. Town Clerk Ellen Schena said she needs to notify every Precinct 3 voter by mail of the change, which will take place for the Nov. 6 general election. The Italian American Club has ample parking to accommodate voters from both precincts, according to the town clerk.

Elections like the one in November usually draw 50 to 60 percent of the voters, according to Schena.

Saugus High School Sports Hall of Fame Cassandra and Kelsey Anderson – twin sisters and 2007 Saugus High School graduates who starred in female soccer and indoor and outdoor track – will be among 10 former Sachem athletic greats who will be inducted this fall in the school’s “Sports Hall of Fame.”

The school’s Hall of Fame Committee also chose to honor the 1999 Saugus High hockey team that won the Division 2 MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) State Championship.

Town announces reopening of CHaRM Center Recycling Drop-Off site The Town of Saugus announces that the community’s Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (CHaRM) site will be open to residents on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The site is located behind the Department of Public Works at 515 Main St. There is no preregistration or fee required to enter the site; however, proof of residency is required.

At the CHaRM center, the Town will accept the same recycling items that can be placed outside for curbside collection each week, such as paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and glass containers. Additional acceptable items include TVs and computers (up to three per year per address); car tires up to 22” (for a fee of $3); books; and textiles, such as, clothing, bedding, pocketbooks, belts and shoes.

Plastic bags and rigid plastics are not permitted due to the international recycling market. Residents are kindly asked to empty recyclables out of any plastic bags, and remove the bags from the site.

A: Exactly. The kids pick up all of these skills, and businesses take notice of it when they’re hiring. Schools take notice of it when kids are applying for college. It really affects people in a lot of ways that they don’t realize when they are young.

One of my challenges in being a scoutmaster is not only working on the kids, but I feel I have to work the parents a lot.

I try to tell the parents why the program is so good and how it is lifelong skills that these kids will gain. They don’t see it and are sometimes shortsighted on why you to do certain

things. And I tell them, “Down the road, you will be amazed at what your kid has learned in any number of subjects.” Like I said, the lessons taught in the program are just invaluable.

Q: So, what does it mean for your troop to be around for 90 years – nine decades? Just to hang around that long?

A: Yeah, we got to be doing something right if the program has been going on for all that long.

Q: So, is Troop 61 one the oldest continuing troops in the area?

A: I don’t really know about the troops outside of Saugus. I know there have been a few troops in the area that have been around for a while.

Do you have some interesting views on an issue that you want express to the community? Submit your idea. If I like it, we can meet for a 15- to 20-minute interview at a local coffee shop. And I’ll buy the coffee. though. But I think you would find we’re definitely one of the oldest troops around. If you look at the overall scouting program in this country, the Boy Scouts were formed in 1910, and we started Troop 61 in 1928. So there’s not a lot of years missing in the beginning. We’ve been around close to the entire BSA [Boy Scouts of America] life cycle. So that definitely makes us one of the older troops in the area.

Q: So, 59 Eagles?

A: Yep. They’re all up on the plaque. But there was lull in the number of scouts who made Eagles for about 12 years in the 50’s and the 60’s, which is very odd for me. I don’t know what

ASKS | from page 18 happened in that era. But when Jim Vernelli took over, he really made a difference; from that point on we had 30-plus Eagle Scouts.

Q: So, are you trying to get all of the Eagles to come back?

A: Yep. We reached out to most of the guys that we have contacts for, through Facebook and the troopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s page. We also created an Eagle Scout Troop 61 page for just the Eagle Scouts to try and promote things like this.

Q: Have you identified the oldest living member of Troop 61?

A: I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, but Mr. Vernelli would definitely be up there.

Q: Is there anybody coming from great distances to attend this birthday party Sunday?

A: There could be some people coming from the western part of the state. I know there might be somebody coming from New York, but I havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t heard that he can make it out here. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think anybody is traveling a great distance that I know of. But I know we have one leader. He was a leader in my era and heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coming, and I believe he still lives in Texas, so I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coming

for the party or heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just going to be out here on family business. But to see somebody like him make the time and effort to be here, whether heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on business or vacation or whatever, the fact that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to come to the party to say â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hi,â&#x20AC;? is great.

Q: Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s his name?

A: George Ayube. George is a great guy. George was committee chairman back in probably the late 80â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s or early 90â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for a few years. He did a great job in that position, but unfortunately his son got out of the program in the late teenage era.

Q: So, is George an Eagle?

A: George is not an Eagle.

I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know that George did scouts at all. He joined the program with his son.

The Eagle Scout, as you are aware, is very hard to achieve.

Back when I was getting it in the 80â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s [1989], it was less than two percent of all scouts earned Eagle. Nowadays, I think the number is five to six percent. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still a very low number. But you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t just judge a Boy Scouting experience on Eagle Scouts. A lot of these kids, like Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, even though he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t achieve the award, he got a tremendous experience out of scouting: all of the camping trips and what he did learn.

to become an orthopedic surgeon in the future. At college she is a member of the National Honor Society and President of the Ballet Club, and she volunteers as a dance and yoga instructor. She is also a member of the Saugus River Watershed Council, the Saugus Action Volunteers for the Environment, and the Sierra Club.

To offset food insecure households, Healthy Studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; Healthy Saugus will provide a weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s supply of nutritious food for each eligible child when school lunches and breakfasts are unavailable to them on weekends or school holidays during the school year.

Take-home grocery bags will contain two breakfasts, two lunches, two snacks, one can of vegetables and one can of fruit.

All food will be nonperishable and provided to children free of charge. If additional food is needed for extended family members, it will be provided. It is our hope these resourc-

es will support the health, behavior and achievement of every student who participates.

Parents will apply for the program by filling out a simple consent form.

The program will be run by the school departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current food service provider, Whitsons Food Service, and many wonderful volunteers who will be packing the food bags. Whitsons will deliver food and grocery bags to each volunteer site on Thursdays, where the bags will be packed then picked up by Whitsons on Fridays and delivered to the schools for students to take home. The program will begin first at the elementary schools and, if the need arises, will be expanded to the upper grades.

So, just because you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the award doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean that you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a good time.

And we see a bunch of those kids who you can say really deserved the award, but they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stay involved in it to the end. But if you ask them â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I just had one last year â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they ran out of time. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the bottom line.

He ran out of time and he was going off to college. I tried to do everything I could to talk him into pushing to get the Eagle Award, and he said â&#x20AC;&#x153;no,â&#x20AC;? he just couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do it and he wanted to get on with his life. But he assured me he was comfortable with his decision because the scouting program made a tremendous impact on his life.

He learned all kinds of lessons; he just didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the patch on his shirt to show it. But he had a great scouting career. So, the boy being comfortable with that, I could not push any more.

Q: As an Eagle Scout myself [Swansea Boy Scout Troop 26 in 1978], I think one of the most unheralded aspects of the Eagle Scout are the public service projects these kids work on and the great good it does for the community. When I did mine, it was three nights of supervising cleanup crews of scouts at the Swansea Police Station. My proj-

ect may have been good at the time because of tight budgets which reduced manpower and maintenance work. But it canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hold a candle to all these elaborate projects that Eagle Scout candidates are doing nowadays.

A: Yes. Well, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of the great things about scouting â&#x20AC;&#x201C; me getting to see young people develop and come up with the various projects. Their Eagle Scout projects are their own ideas and concept, pretty much, so you never know what you are going to get. You could have somebody who tries to do just the most basic project, and then you could have another kid who wants to shoot for the moon, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s everything in between. So, for me, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really a great experience to see what they come up with, see how they plan it and develop it, and watch them make the proper plan and overcome their problems.

Q: There are a lot of great projects that get done â&#x20AC;&#x201C; like trail improvements and park improvements â&#x20AC;&#x201C; projects that really help a lot of people in their respective communities.

A: Absolutely. We definitely

hold them to a high standard when it comes to doing their Eagle Scout projects. Some troops might have a lower standard, if you will, but Troop 61 has definitely had a high standard when it comes to the Eagle Scout projects. And we make sure we sit down with the boy prior to him making out his budget, and we make sure that the project is truly worthy.

We make them step it up. And I think all of the boys have benefited over the years because of that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that push to keep the bar set high. They are better off in society, when it comes to all of their peers and everything.

Q: Anything else you want THE AD to talk about? Maybe youEVERETT want to give a plug on something related to the birthday party? So, is this something thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open to all past and present troop members?

A: Yes. We have been pushing the issue and publicizing it as being open to anybody who had anything to do with Troop 61 through all of the years. They are more than welcome to join.

Q: How about kids who might be interested in scouting? It might be a great way to recruit kids for the troop.

A: Yes. We have told our kids, and we have told our active boys to see about bringing down new friends and anybody they know. We had one kid come in last week for the first time, and he’s interested in scouting, so we told him to come on down. He’s friendly with three of the boys in our troop. Anybody is welcome. It’s open to the public.

Our other hope is that people coming back to visit us will bring their families and their kids, so that somebody who was in the scouts in the 60’s and 70’s might bring their kids and grandkids. But I think everybody who is coming back is coming back to see Mr. V., our great leader, and this should make for a nice celebration day.

Mayor, City Council to apply $12.5 million Wynn payment to reduce tax rate The City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Mayor Carlo DeMaria on Monday, November 13 to apply the entirety of Wynn Boston Harbor’s $12.5 million payment to the City of Everett toward reducing next year’s tax rate. The mayor made a similar move last year, when he successfully applied the entirety of a $5 million payment from Wynn toward the tax rate.

City Council adopts FY 18 tax rate The City Council unanimously voted to adopt a split levy rate on Monday, November 27, shifting the burden from residential to Commercial, Industrial and Personal Property (CIP) at the highest shift of 175 percent.

The FY 18 tax rate will be $13.78 per $1,000 of valuation on residential properties and $33.74 per $1,000 of valuation on CIP properties. If the council hadn’t approved the shift, the flat rate for residential property and CIP would have been $19.28 per $1,000.

The shift will not prevent homeowners from seeing a small increase in their actual taxes, as home values have skyrocketed in the city over the last year.

On average, single-family home values rose by about $39,000 since the last fiscal year, while two-family and three-family residences on average rose $50,000.
