NY Political Leaders Urge US Investigation of IHH Flotilla
Rabbi Arthur Schneier BY MAXINE DOVERE This was a celebration equaled by very few! On the evening of June 7, close to one thousand gathered to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Park East Synagogue and celebrate the eightieth birthday of its long time spiritual leader Rabbi Arthur Schneier.
D
ignitaries, leaders of business, diplomats, religious, secular and cultural directors gathered for a celebratory event at the Waldorf Astoria in New York. The jubilant, exciting evening brought together an international group of friends, family, and congregants to join the festivities marking for the well known rabbi. Among the guests was a contingent of one hundred seventy five parents, and a representative group of students of the Park East Day School. At eighty, Rabbi Arthur Schneier is a vibrant, worldly, involved, and future oriented personality. The rabbi seamlessly handles

BY JV STAFF In a matter of only a few days, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRCNY) gathered more than 23,000 signatories on a petition calling for the investigation of former “passengers” who sailed as part of the IHH flotilla who have announcement their intention of conducting a speaking tour in the United States.

he petition was presented to members of the New York Congressional delegation for delivery to the appropriate offices in Washington, DC. The JCRC-NY, together with Representatives Eliot Engel, Carolyn Maloney, Jerold Nadler, Charles Rangel, Anthony Weiner, NYC Council Speaker
Christine Quinn, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, and Assemblyman David Weprin called on the U.S. State Department to “investigate any and all passengers” (of the IHH flotilla) seeking entry into the United States. A 2006 report issued by the Danish Institute for International Studies states that IHH has “been known to maintain links with al-Qaida and a number of "global jihad networks." Thirteen years ago, in 1997, a Turkish government investigation led to a raid on the organization’s Istanbul off ices from which weapons, explosives, and bomb-making instructions were conf iscated. Call for passage of the America Stands with Israel Act, opposing U.N. investigation and demanding withdrawal from U.N. Human Rights Council.

unday, Congressman Pete King (RSeaford) was joined by Democratic Assemblymen David Weprin and Rory Lancman, Rabbi Joseph Potasnik and Jewish community leader Jeffrey Wiesenfeld, to declare support for Israel and opposition to a U.N. investigation into last month’s Israeli interception of a Gazabound ship. The leaders called for passage of King’s bill, the America Stands with Israel Act (H.R. 5501). “As one of our closest allies, we should be standing with Israel, not endorsing a U.N.-sponsored attack against it,” said King. “By participating in this investigation, the Administration is driving a wedge between the U.S. and a long-standing friend. American tax dollars should not be used for this purpose, which is why I introduced the America Stands with Israel Act, calling for the removal of the U.S. from the U.N. Human Rights Council and from par-
