Israel’s Olympic Gold Hopefuls NY Congressional Alexandra and Roman Zaretsky Delegation Joins JCRC at Annual Political Event

BY SHMUEL BEN ELIEZER Rabbi Dr. Bernard Lander, passed away on Monday night at the age of 94. abbi Lander was best known as the founder and president of Touro College, but he was much more. Rabbi Dr. Lander attended Yeshiva University in the 1930’s and received his ordination in 1937. His concern was always with helping others, whether it was helping Yeshiva boys f ind a means to making a living, or whether it was in helping juvenile delinquents. reflected in his Columbia dissertation. The topic dealt with how the courts and police deal with juvenile delinquents. He was a social scientist and educator, a preeminent leader of the worldwide Jewish community and a pioneer in Jewish and general higher education. As associate director of former New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia’s Committee on Unity, a precursor to the city’s Commission on Human Rights and a leading organization in the nation attacking discrimination and prejudice, Dr. Lander promoted key fair employment legislation and attacked discriminatory quotas in higher education. An ordained rabbi, he holds a doctorate in sociology from Columbia University. Dr. Lander’s record of achievement in creating and building new educational institutions is unparalleled. In 1950, he served as president of the Queens Jewish Center where, under

This week Israel’s hope for a Winter Olympic medal traveled to Vancouver, Canada in their quest for gold. iblings Alexandra and Roman Zaretsky entered the rink for the first time at the age of 4 and 6. Originally from Belarus, the two immigrated to Israel as toddlers and grew up there ever since. What started off as a family hobby, with their parents serving as coaches, soon developed into a world class ice skating career. Till today, the two have managed to win gold at this year Winter Universidad, Silver at the 2009 Nebelhorn Trophy in Germany, 5th in the Cup of China and gold

at the ISU Grand Prix series in 2003. “When people see us in the Israeli team uniform, you can basically see their jaw dropping. Then they say something about sand and camels, but after our show they usually realize that Israel is very different from the image they had in their head”, says Roman Zaretsky During a recent tour in NY before going off to the Olympics the pair performed at NYC’s Bryant Park, where they thrilled the audience with speed and precision. After Alexandra and Roman Zaretsky, finished their demonstration they held a Master Class clinic for underprivileged youth, “In the spirit of giving back, we are thrilled to be able to host this skating workshop, providing an opportunity of exchange between our Israeli Olympic ath-
